I get chip out all the time with pine! If you can find the chipped out piece, put glue in the hole and reinsert the chip. Little blue tape to hold it in place and you’re good to go. It has saved a bunch of my projects. Great video as well!
Thanks for the tip! I had that thought on this project but by the time I had it, I had already lost the chip out piece sadly.

Great video. It motivated me to try it with hand tools. The first immediate problem I ran into was stock prep. Trying to get the “common boards” from Home Depot completely square and flat has been extremely difficult. I’m also not sure how good is good enough.
I know you’re trying to move on from doing the stock prep by hand, but if you could make a video on your manual process I’d be super interested. I haven’t seen any stock prep videos on RUclips that do anything except for dimensioning a single large chunk of cherry.
Actually prepping the 3 boards for this stool from construction grade lumber to the point where you can make accurate layout lines and use for joinery would be new to RUclips as far as I can tell.
Hey Colton! Glad it motivated you to try it out with hand tools! I feel like stock preparation by hand is really hard and feel like I'm still trying to fully learn how to do it properly myself.
Thanks for asking for a video too. I really like knowing what people want to watch so this makes me consider incorporating a more in-depth stock preparation piece into my next video or like you said, just doing a whole video dedicated to preparing common Home Depot lumber by hand.
I know you said you couldn't really find any videos that were helpful so sorry if you already stumbled upon these videos, but here are some videos I've watched about stock prep by hand. I know it isn't common boards from home depot, but a lot of the principles still apply. I hope they help!

@@DaughtersWoodCo Thanks for the links. The Matt Estlea video is new for me. I also want to clarify what I was trying to say earlier because I did a bad job of it.
I don’t necessarily think that dimensioning a common board would be very different from other videos. I think dimensioning several boards for the purposes of building something with them would be interesting. For example, I got really hung up while making the legs for the stool because I wasn’t sure how identical they should be. After flattening them each individually I realized that one board was a couple millimeters longer and wider than the other one. Would that matter? I’d hate to go through all of the remaining effort to find out that that discrepancy was going to cause me a ton of more work later on.
Now I got them to be the exact same shape by sticking them together (tape and super glue between them) and then using a combination of planing and very careful sawing.
Now do I need to make the top board the exact same width? I don’t have a panel gauge so I’m not sure how hard that will be.
Those kinds of questions are the ones that I haven’t seen any other video on RUclips answer.
I love your style. You don’t have a tremendous amount of tools that would take several years to acquire or would only make sense for a professional to have. I hope you keep it up. This video and the videos where you made tools are some of my favorite woodworking videos.
@@coltonwilliams8758 Thanks for clarifying what you were trying to say. I think I'm better understanding now and I think those are all great questions and would agree that that level of detail is something a lot of build videos/projects videos don't get into.
It actually reinforces something I've been thinking about with project videos and that is dividing them up into smaller parts where I maybe go into more detail about things rather then trying to cram a 3 or 4 week long project into a 15 to 20 minute video.
All this to say, thanks for commenting and sharing your thoughts! It is helpful for me to be able to better know what to talk about when doing voice overs. Thanks too for the encouragement! The channel's been a fun hobby and I hope to keep it up!

Quick question: did you make your own wedges?
Did you get a one speed or two speed planer ? Been looking that Dewalt planer myself. Got any recommendation?
I got a one speed planer. The one I got was the dewalt DW734 which is the cheaper of the two dewalt models (as I'm sure you may know since you said you're looking at dewalt planers). The more expensive DW735 model is a two speed. In terms of recommendations I feel like I'm not experienced enough with using planers and or having used different kinds to really know what to look for, but something I was thinking about was that no matter what planer I use I still plan to run a smoothing plane over each face of my milled boards and I'm not really looking for a planer to give me a nice "finish ready" board. At the end of the day I want a planer that'll plane wood to a certain thickness and so with that in mind I think just about any planer on the market is going to do just that. So in light of that I know Dewalt has a pretty good reputation for producing pretty quality products so I just decided to go with the cheaper DW734 one speed model. At the end of the day I guess I would say to think about what you want out of a planner and how you plan to use it then find one that'll suit those needs. Hope that helps!
