Sarah Michelle Geller was awesome in this scene. The watchers council did not value the slayer. To them the slayer was a sword they sued to beat of the force of darkness. When the sword broke they melted it down added some ore and carbon to the mix and reforged a new sword. In this case a new slayer. The council had grown so accustomed to slayers coming and going that they forgot that a slayer is a human being with real thoughts and feelings.
They also had a system of training, and for want of a better word, brainwashing, potentials, so that when they became Slayers, they were programed to just follow orders (See Kendra)
The watchers had glorified themselves right from the start, fooling themselves into believing the slayer was a tool they used to fight evil, when all along they should have been a tool the _slayer_ used to fight evil.

This. This is why Buffy is the greatest Slayer of all time. She was absolutely dedicated to the fight, knew it HAD to be fought, but wasn't going to put up with simply being a tool, a weapon. Slayers like Kendra were compliant and happy to be tools of the Watchers. Slayers like Faith (specifically when she was at her darkest) rebelled against the Watchers and fighting the good fight. Buffy, on the other hand, rebelled against the Watcher's methods, but not their battle. She fought the good fight on her own terms.
"We're talking about children" In my book those "children" are more adult than the Watchers. While the Watchers (Giles excepted) have been drinking tea and eating scones, those "children" have been holding the line against evil on one of the most dangerous battlefields of the supernatural war for 5 YEARS!!

I love that Giles lets Buffy, someone with limited official employment experience and less familiarity with the offical terms, to make sure he gets retroactive pay for all the time he's worked with her. xD SO GOOD.
Well....the scene isn't finished. There's still the brief part of him rendering Buffy speechless by giving her something she didn't have: knowledge. Specifically that Glory is a god.

I always watched Buffy here and there when it was first airing but always remained indifferent about it; it was Season 5 that made me a “fan” of the show.
The Council does nothing but sit on their asses while the Slayer risks her life. Travers didn’t care if Buffy lived or died on her 18th birthday and he especially didn’t care when Kralik went after Joyce.
Buffy is right, even with all their wealth of knowledge without a Slayer to do the combat the council is nothing. Even Giles who we have seen can fight himself winds up almost getting killed when he goes against the bigger threats.
This clip misses out one of the most excellent moments in the whole of BTVS. The massively understated 'oh' when she finds out that Glory is a god. It's a piece of genius writing.
Willow and Tara were the power. Giles was the mind. Xander was the heart. And Anya and Spike provided deep insight into the demons they fought. Buffy didn't think of them as her team. They were her family. The watchers council always thought of the slayer as a tool against vampires and demons. A weapon to protect themselves with. But she isn't. She is a human being.
Buffy missed out on the opportunity to demand a salary for herself. That would've avoided the whole Doublemeat Palace issue.

great, now I have to binge through all that again.
Buffy always had great hair.
JOTG2000 this is the best comment! LOL!!!
I miss you so much Buffy ☹️
I love how the Scoobies applaud at 3:33. It's like they weren't sure that Quentin would back down. I also think it's quite interesting that Quentin doesn't look at all pissed off that he's been outmanoeuvred...There's a definite subtext there; I think Quentin was secretly hoping Buffy would resist.
He was the leader of the Council. Had to show strength for the rest to see. In the end though Buffy was right. She always had a puncher's chance against Glory. They had none.
Buffy throwing the sword was epic 😎
The cut it at just the wrong moment.
"See, no begging" is the best line as it shows her power.
Love how Gilles caught the ball right away XD Nice
Buffy Summers.
Our hero.
This is an underrated scene…..
The Scoobies all cheering for her is so cute! I love a friendship!
IDK if you noticed but at 3:36 buffy looks up at them at the corner of her eye and smiles.
Giles and friends are the only ones allowed to interrupt.
Season 5 was just phenomenal; it will always be my absolute favorite season. It just had a tone/feel to it; amazing character development, amazing writing, amazing growth. It was the climax of the entire series. It felt as if the writers, actors, directors, everyone involved... were all at the top of their game this season. I always watched Buffy here and there when it was first airing but always remained indifferent about it; it was Season 5 that made me a “fan” of the show.
They leaned into a story that was the full season vs a few episodes. It helped
Epic on of my favorite Buffy moments when I first saw this and she threw the sword I jumped up and cheered My girl Buffy is bad ass Miss you Buffy
The Council does nothing but sit on their asses while the Slayer risks her life. Travers didn’t care if Buffy lived or died on her 18th birthday and he especially didn’t care when Kralik went after Joyce.
SHE SAID NO INTERRUPTIONS, GILES!!!
I'm so happy that this stuffy obsolete old grumpy people's club finally got taken down a peg.
Yet people who put this speech up usually cut off the part where he takes her down a peg. "Glory is a god."
Giles so totally knew he had done his job at that point.
The side eye willow gave Anya was epic I died
Buffy is right, even with all their wealth of knowledge without a Slayer to do the combat the council is nothing. Even Giles who we have seen can fight himself winds up almost getting killed when he goes against the bigger threats.
Of course Xander could stay, for what can do without her HEART
yay buffy dont like interuptions
but Buffy do like long pointy things
Buffy just won her game of Diplomacy.
It's 2020 and still my FAVORITE Series. Xx
The speech every narcissist should hear, sword and all.
This clip misses out one of the most excellent moments in the whole of BTVS. The massively understated 'oh' when she finds out that Glory is a god. It's a piece of genius writing.
It kinda ruins her whole speech though
Buffy said the John Wick ‘oh’ before there was John Wick.
Still looking that in December 2019!
you missed the absolute best bit at the end
Willow and Tara were the power. Giles was the mind. Xander was the heart. And Anya and Spike provided deep insight into the demons they fought. Buffy didn't think of them as her team. They were her family. The watchers council always thought of the slayer as a tool against vampires and demons. A weapon to protect themselves with. But she isn't. She is a human being.
