I love how "Buffy's big secret that wasn't actually much of a secret" was a running gag starting at the first episode... and it ended up here with the whole class recognizing that she was the Class Protector. Even if they didn't know of the Slayer by name, they knew it was her doing the protecting. Nicely written and SMG's expressions/emotions sold it beautifully.
This speech made by Jonathan makes it so much more important. Any of the scoobs would’ve added a little inside joke or sarcasm, but Jonathan spoke from the heart after Buffy saved him from killing himself. The line “we’re not good friends, most of us never find the time to get to know you, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t noticed you” is so beautiful, and so “Sunnydale High” appropriate.
yes. No one truly understood the important of it being Jonathan presenting the award, because when this episode first aired, Earshot hadn't aired due to Columbine. He wouldn't have been at prom if it weren't for buffy stopping him in the tower.
Snyder is a hero He took a job as a principal of a school he knew was on the door to hell. One of my favorite scenes in the whole show. Too many times in tv shows you see the protagonist doing something amazing, and yet, no one notices. Up to this point i was always wondering how no one noticed. Turns out they did. I love this scene.
It was rare that people acknowledged Buffy was different, but I enjoyed in the Gingerbread episode where the goth wiccan kid is getting picked on by the jock, Amy tries to stop him and nothing... but Buffy just peeks in and he backs down like he knows he's in for a world of hurt if he doesn't. She literally just gave him a smile and he was gone. Joss Whedon just creates the best characters and shows.
The ending of season 5 cannot be matched. Like, ever. When the WB no longer had the show and at the end of season 5, after the credits "Five great years. We thank you." My heart went out then
Part of what made this scene work so well was that Buffy had saved Jonathan's life two episodes earlier. Of course, audiences couldn't appreciate that when this aired, because, due to Columbine, the episodes were shown out of sequence.
Right there was another one almost right after Columbine and there were two other incidents not as bad as Columbine but still... It was because of Columbine that they postponed the episodes.
What i love is how Cordelia is smiling...she and Buffy were on and off friends but I think here is where you see true friendship. This scene always makes me tear up. It's so nice to have people notice you for the postives and not the negatives. I think I heard this quote in a movie once and it's 100% true. "Our failures are known, our successes are not" but in this scene people noticed all the good that Buffy did and not the negative
I think Cordelia warmed up to Buffy after the episode where she made the wish that Buffy never came to Sunnydale. She saw how bad things would have been without her, and eased up a touch.
I was reading the beginning of the quote and I was like?? What’s this comment about egg whites and then I got to the end and was like, oh right! Larry😂😂😂😂
In the episode you are referring to in season 4, at the end, Buffy is shown carrying the umbrella away. So she definitely kept it and may or may not have fixed it.
I love Buffy’s reaction she’s so confused. It never entered her head that she would be honoured and celebrated by her school. She’s that selfless. She’s genuinely surprised and seriously touched that all her pain and isolation hasn’t gone unnoticed by the people that would be her friends were it not for her calling…… She sacrificed friends to keep strangers safe. And she now finds out that people noticed and are very greatful to her. And in my head when she accepts the umbrella she’s thinking: “No problem guys, it was my pleasure to protect you. I don’t do this for praise and prizes but getting one certainty feels great. I’m really gonna miss you guys now”
This scene has to be one of the most real in all 7 seasons of BTVS... The look on Gilles' face does me in every single time. It's a moment of such pure appreciation, and (finally) acknowledgement that Sunnydale is in fact -- not so normal. Bless season 3 - all the onions in this season is a heart full with Angel leaving (again), the class uniting together to fight the mayor, lovers walk... The way this entire show is constructed is what makes it timeless. The character development and seeing each one grow and change is mesmerizing. Well, they joked that the lokal High school newspaper has its own orbituaries page. That becons the question, 'how do they even keep the numbers of a Highschool'? Alone the vamps should be like 2 to 5 people a day, night, you know what I mean.
@@Cernumospete yes there's also a joke made I believe in the episode where they're building a girlfriend for the dead jock that a rival high school is going to "beat Sunnydale in the cross town body count". It brings up the question of how big Sunnydale actually is. In the early seasons it's joked that it's a pretty small town. Yet apparently it has at least 2 high schools, something like 17 cemeteries (episode with Gwendolyn Post) and a university. 🤷♂️
Johnathan sounds so sincere, flawless performance. To me this is the best scene of the whole show. I hope they didn't destroy the real trophy they gave her here. It belongs in a museum somewhere. One of those moments that stuck with me into adulthood. To receive recognition for something you've done is invaluable. I think it was especially important here because she wasn't helping everyone in an effort for recognition. This scene is nothing more than a group of people saying thank you in a very kind way.
Well, I don't know that I would say she never WANTED any recognition. She certainly seemed happy to get it here. I would say she just never EXPECTED to get it, because life's not fair. There's a bit of a difference between being resigned and being indifferent to the lack of reward. I always felt Buffy was the former and Giles was the latter.
Such an awesome scene, through and through. None of them signed up for this, not even Buffy. They're just doing the best they can with the hand they were dealt. Then you look at this scene in universe, and it's even more awesome. With things like classes, prom, graduation, and a social life distracting them right now, enough of her fellow students had to notice her efforts, remember it was her, and write her name on the ballot instead of just checking boxes and putting it in the box. Then, the prom committee members who have the same stuff going on, have to see all the ballots and consciously choose to act on it when it's easier to just ignore it and move on. Then they went one step further, and give her not just the umbrella, not just the umbrella and the plaque, and not even just the umbrella, plaque, and note. They give her all three, plus public recognition so that not only does she know, but all the students that wrote in know that they weren't ignored. It's just one more thing that they can bond over when it's all said and done.
i watch buffy almost every year. this scene makes me tear up the most. it's not really about them recognizing her or saving their lives, it's about her not feeling as alone as she always has felt. the scene starts with everyone but buffy facing one way, doing one thing. like usual. but then they break the wall and let her know that she's always been facing the same way as them... just on a higher platform.
It reminds me of the day when Sergeant Vickers, the man who had shot down a terrorist in the Canadian Houses of Parliament, was received with applause by the whole united Parliament. Sometimes merit is recognized.
this confirms that the people of Sunnydale not aren't fools, and many still aware that Buffy saved their asses from demons many times (in fact, a guy see her killing a hellhound in this episode), thus the idea of this llamative award, ¿not is a beautiful gesture of appreciation?.
I Think is scene is connected to the season 3 finale at graduation day. Here she finds out her whole class noticed her heroics and are grateful to her for them. Then 2 episodes later she turns her graduation class into an army to fight the mayor. Without this ‘class protector’ moment during the prom then the army scene wouldn’t make sense, and wouldn’t be believable. Because of the class protector thing we know that her class will trust her about the danger they’re in and follow her instructions.
"Lowest mortality rate of any class in Sunnydale History" ooof, that's a line with a bit of weight to it. It does make me sad to think that that kid later came back as a baddie.
"...class of 99 has the lowest mortality rate than any graduating class in the Sunnydale's history..." - that's just beautiful...:)

All her friends, her allies, the entire class. She fucking bled for them, and they finally acknowledged it and honored her for it. :`(
The one Buffy scene that ever made me tear up :((( It's so perfect.
Have you not seen the episode the body that episode makes me sob
Fucking preach. Anya breaking down makes me well up.
One of my favorite TV moments ever.
Oh best scene ever 😍😍😢
I’m not crying, you are…
Looking back, I can see why this episode is one of Sarah’s faves
She was a true hero She did all those things for the class and never wanted any recognition in return.
I'm glad they acknowledged Buffy. Because shes definitely gonna need their help come Graduation Day...
When you think your actions go unheard it's these moments that prove they aren't.
Yep. Recognition...while not being sought...is still nice to receive.
As avid old BUFFY fan... I remember the scene. Good show.
It's just one more thing that they can bond over when it's all said and done.
i watch buffy almost every year. this scene makes me tear up the most.
it's not really about them recognizing her or saving their lives, it's about her not feeling as alone as she always has felt. the scene starts with everyone but buffy facing one way, doing one thing. like usual. but then they break the wall and let her know that she's always been facing the same way as them... just on a higher platform.
how can anyone not be completely in love with this show?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Totally forgot about this scene, it´s so beautiful!
"A lot of weird stuff happens here."
"Zombies!"
"Hyena people!"
"Snyder!"
ich liebe diese Szene .Endlich ein kleines Dankeschön von den Menschen die sie so oft gerettet hat!
This show will never get its due. One of the top series ever on TV
It reminds me of the day when Sergeant Vickers, the man who had shot down a terrorist in the Canadian Houses of Parliament, was received with applause by the whole united Parliament. Sometimes merit is recognized.
That sense all aways makes me cry but happy cry
this confirms that the people of Sunnydale not aren't fools, and many still aware that Buffy saved their asses from demons many times (in fact, a guy see her killing a hellhound in this episode), thus the idea of this llamative award, ¿not is a beautiful gesture of appreciation?.
Makes me sob every damn time. It’s been 20 years and it makes me sob EVERY time
Love the moment when buffy is recognized for something good she did.
I'm still tearing up 🥲
Such a beautiful scene of everyone finally acknowledging her hard work, protecting them all.
Danny Strongs finest hour. Beautifully delivered
I'm not crying.... your crying.
One of the best special feelings from this series. My fav of ALL TIME!!!
20+ years later and it still makes me tear up 🥰
I love this scene, and how this prop was used to energize Buffy when she fights Sunday.
This scene always makes me tear up
Buffy :') she save the World a lot!
This is literally, beautiful.
loved this show , buffy was a bad ass
22 years later and I still am here bawling my eyes out!!
"Lowest mortality rate of any class in Sunnydale History" ooof, that's a line with a bit of weight to it.
It does make me sad to think that that kid later came back as a baddie.
The most beautiful moment perhaps ever in the entire series? Capping off with Angel dancing with her at the Prom.
When that cow Sunday stepped on it I got so angry
this has to be my favorite scene of buffy of all time
