How To Fix Stuck Power Running Boards!

- In this video I go over an issue that I have time to time with my Amp Research power running boards and how I fix and maintain them. Power steps no matter what brand have issues. The issue I have here is very common for all. Maintenance is key on power steps to keep them working properly. As I say in the video your adding another mechanical part to your vehicle. Thanks for watching!
Thanks I do the exact same thing. Also be aware to clean after the rainy season. I tend to use an air compressor to clean out the pivot points before the silicone lube.
Yup using air is good if you go it and like I did I just used some brake cleaner and flush it out and old lube out.
awesome.. going to try it out
Hopefully it helps you out!
You might try Super Lube oil to see if it would last longer for you. I replaced my silicone garage door lube with Super Lube oil and it lasts MUCH longer.
Nice! I will look into it. This PB blaster silicon lube works pretty well. Hasn’t been as rainy in my part of Texas this year and since I made this video I haven’t had to reapply anything. With a vehicle it’s constantly getting dirty under there so I’m sure eventually you have to reapply everything you put on the pivots.

Mine won’t come down how can I get them down?
The motor making any noise or trying to do anything? I would unplug the motor and see if you can pull them down by hand. And then do what I did in the video. They get stuck up or down because of no lubrication most the time. Some times the motors do fail though. Have someone open the door and listen for the motor. If you don’t hear it the motor isn’t working.
My passenger door side step motor wants to come down and up I can here it but it’s stuck ?
Have someone open the door and close it as you watch. Sounds like something in the motor is messed up. Or I had a piece break off that bolts the motor to the arm that actuates the step and it would come down but not up.
Have you ever had a problem with the stairs? Have a mind of their own, and they go app-and-down like when you drive and down the road, it sounds like your suspensions fall out of the bottom of the truck, but it's the stairs going up-and-down on the road. Does that mean there's a bad sensor somewhere? How do I fix that? Do you know of anything like that
I forgot to add that it's only doing it on the passenger side
It could be the Amp Research control module if you have ones like mine, if you have factory or other ones it could be their control module. Other wise I would think it would be something with your vehicle thinking that so is opening and closing.
My step is stuck down, when the door shuts the lights dims super quick and doesn’t move, any help??
That sounds like a wiring issue. I would check the fuse for your steps and the wiring. Also check where the motor plugs in make sure it’s clean. Can you guide it up when you shut your door? Does it try to do anything?
I had both running boards get stuck with grit 2 winters ago. I cleaned and lubed both and got the driver's side going. The passenger side was stuck down and I manually pushed it up. I've used compressed air, power washer, several lubricants, a pry-bar, etc. and I haven't been successful freeing it up. There is power to the motor. Did I break something by pushing the board up?
Definitely could have broke something on that motor. When you unplug the motor you still can’t pull the step down manually?
@@5.0jeffro79 I will try that. Thanks for the tip to try
@@kyleterlesky4780try that. If that doesn’t work I would unmount the steps and get a better look at what’s going on. Something could have sheared and got bound up.
@5.0jeffro79 I removed the motor and gearbox today and the running board is STILL seized! I was surprised, but at least the motor or gear pin isn't the problem. Next I will remove the board and linkages and see what is preventing movement
@@kyleterlesky4780it has to be something on one of the arms in a bind. One of the pivot points.
Please in espanis
Ford should know better than to sell these in Ontario where we have snow and salted roads.
Yea the factory ones are not the best compared to amp. But even then you will have to up keep them like crazy, I couldn’t imagine having salt on the roads eating the truck away.
My driver side won't come down at all.....
Does the motor try to make it come down? Do you hear it? If you don’t then the motor could be bad. If it’s stuck all the way up try pulling on it while someone opens the door then do this process and see if it helps.
@@5.0jeffro79 it doesn't make any noise at all. I have a 2015 2500 and bought it used so there's no warranty that I know of. I will try to have my son pull on it!! Thank you!!
@@PraiseGod247lay under there of have your son while you open the door. See if you can hear the motor. If it’s only your driver side something isn’t working. Either the motor is seized or just don’t work. Or it could simply have a wire that is frayed.
@@5.0jeffro79 thank you!!! I will check it out tomorrow!
