- I have a heart to heart chat with Ian Thornley about how hard being a pro vocalist at his level really is! How learning and hard work is a must to establish and maintain a career. Thanks to Ian for doing the interview with me (thanks man!!) and to Big Wrecks manager Rian Balloch of Skware Eyes Collaborative for sending over the video and images.

This guy is not only a vocal and guitar master but also avery humble and grounded . Ian you make Canada proud
What a fantastic interview. Thornley is a vocal monster with unreal guitar chops and sense of melody.
I saw Big Wreck in Boston and Ian started the show apologizing that he had a cold then he proceeded to just blow the place away with his vocals. If he hadn’t said anything I would have assumed he was having a great night and that his voice felt great. He sounded amazing.
One of the things that I have discovered for myself is that one of things that happens when you have a cold is that your head resonates differently from being congested and so you sound different than normal inside your head. Often I used to adjust how it was singing to try to sound “normal” in my head and those adjustments would lead me into trouble because now I wasn’t singing like I normally do.
I used to record every show and one of the shows I had a bad cold but when I listened back I realized that I actually sounded the same as I always did.
So the lesson was don’t trust your head resonance when you have a cold. Go off of muscle memory of how to approach the notes. As long as I’m hydrated I’m fine no matter what. Granted I’m no Steve Perry or Ian Thornley but I never have lost my voice and I can easily sing through colds now.
For whatever that’s worth. Thank you for this interview. Ian is my hero.
good for you! I remember that gig....Ian called me in a bit of a panic as it was the 1st gig of the tour...and he had been rehearing hard for the week leading up to it....and then came down with a cold, and had almost no voice left! There is a certain way to warm up in that predicament....and I worked twice with him that day to help him get ready. When I asked how it went later that night he said it was "ok" and that he got through it. Glad to hear a member of the audience thought it rocked!
Yes! Love Ian so much! Great interview!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Nice! By Myles, I assume he means Kennedy (who is also a killer singer)!
yup! on both accounts...
@@mitchseekins6100 BTW, this is a wonderful interview
@@anthonysilva5312 thanks man! glad you enjoyed it.
as if being one of the most elite guitarists in the world isn’t enough, he possesses that incredible voice!!!!!
Legend!!!!
agreed!! glad you enjoyed it!
I know eh!? Geeeeeez
Great interview! Ian is such a genuine dude. You get real answers from him.
Thank you :-) it is a good one! It was great of him to open up .... If you're interested, stay tuned I have a short part 2 with him coming up! He talks about microphones! :-)
@@TheVocalCoach let’s gooooooo!!!!!!
@@checkthecredits1155 lol.... Patience grasshopper.... Uh oh, I'm showing my age! Give me a couple days
@@TheVocalCoach hahahaha….cheers, Mr. Miyagi!!!!! Bless you for sharing this…Ian’s a massive influence
I love Ian! He’s just like another fellow Canuck to me :-)
These ‘real’ conversations are so incredibly valuable to help fellow singers find their way!
Keep up the fantastic work, and to Ian, long May you run, brother… long May you run
Lovely to hear Ian.Respect. and again, great work. All the best!
Thanks, you too!
When people tell me theory and learning music is a waste of time I just tell them there’s nothing I’ve ever learned I wish I didn’t know.
Great interview Mitch! I enjoyed it thoroughly. Well done sir
Thanks!!
It's nice to see this. I have been singing Blown Wide Open for about a year and half. It's a challenge but pretty cool. I haven't lost my voice too much in recent years. There were a few times I had to do some serious management before start time. We drove to a seven nighter gig on Vancouver Island. Between the ferry and the drive, it was about six hours travel time. I got sicker and sicker on the way. We arrived set up the gear and then I got in the shower and HOWLED til I had a workable vocal range. First song of the night was Witchy Woman and I sang the high harmony. :)
This was really phenomenal. Both of you had great information for aspiring singers! A huge fan of Ian’s, I’m glad to see you guys both talk about Myles and his impact.
Glad you enjoyed that! So much interview focus has been on Ian's world class guitar playing so as his vocal coach all I wanted to chat about his mindset when it comes to singing. I believe it's so important for singers out to understand what the pros think about in order to do what they do... Helping him out vocally was a real pleasure!
@@mitchseekins6100 I think your perspective would be great to share on my show as well. It would be great to have a student or two of yours to bounce things off of.
@@accesskevinsorry, but who is Myles??
Great interview with such an amazing artist!
Very interesting interview! Thanks, this is my first on this channel. I am also new to Big Wreck, somehow I missed them, all through the 90’s and beyond…. but am very impressed. And I was particularly impressed by his singing, and of course the guitar playing and song writing.
A fantastic vocalist - Miles Kennedy
Great interview! Have been a fan of Big Wreck and Ian from the beginning and have been able to see them play a number of times. Even tho I don’t sing professionally, I sing a lot and agree that it’s no fun when you’re under the weather!
Yup.....but you gotta do what you gotta do!
Great interview! I followed them (mostly Ian, ofc.. lol) around everywhere back in the day like a lost puppy, even tho I'm 4yrs older than Ian. They played little gigs around town, like Lee's Palace, etc (yep, born & raised in T.O.), promoting their first album (met Ian for a very brief chat & autograph).
His voice was slightly different live, but that's what fans want! I certainly didn't go to hundreds of concerts to hear bands sound exactly like they do in studio. His voice In the early days was more raw, but that definitely wasn't a bad thing & he's still seems grounded & humble.
Thanks for this!💙
Oh! There's a part 2 with Ian??! Going to watch that now
So glad you liked it! He's a great guy and I was very happy to help him out.
Even though I am a guitar player I found this fascinating. Great interview.
Thanks!
Great interview!
thanks! hope you found it helpful
I know that feeling - open your mouth and you don't know what's gonna come out? You're breathing into the right places, you're feeling vocally loose and yet....
Yup.... one of the scariest experiences for a vocalist.
Ian I thought I was “hearing”Chris Cornell but when I started to actually “listen” I knew you had something special.
A great interview. A hidden gem on youtube.
thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it
Really enjoyed the interview!
Thank you very much!!
Mitch Seekins - do you coach Ian Thornley on singing? Thanks
Yep, Ian studied with me for about a year and a half. Just had some things to iron out and stabilize. He doesn't study with me anymore I think he was with me in 2017-18.... I think,.... I'd have to look back
@@TheVocalCoach he must be someone who is always learning then?
i see him as someone who has an exceptionally powerful voice.
I have been practicing singing now for a long time and it seems like my power or strength isnt always there.
any pointers about where i should begin about learning actual singing technique?
ive never sought advice before.
Thanks
@@JoesGuitarCafe yes he's always learning....still plays guitar for 4 hrs a day or so. always working and creating. Learning about voice is a rather difficult thing as so much of what you see on the internet is kinda wrong.....that best thing to do is find a coach that you trust and go to work on fundamental's.
Miles who? Love Ian!
glad you enjoyed the interview.....he was talking about the great vocalist Myles Kennedy - look him up! he does his own thing and also does some work with Slash
@@TheVocalCoach ahh! Of course I know Miles Kennedy. he's awesome and chapeau to you on your work with Ian. He should appreciate himself more as a singer. He should actually make an album without playing guitar at all to show how awesome a singer he truly is. If not, he simply is anyway!
lol...agreed!
@@TheVocalCoach, I only found Myles Kennedy in the past few months; Ian in the past few years. They both have voices I always enjoy listening to.
I am unfamiliar with the song he was singing at the beginning. I have had the last five albums or eps banging for the last 9 months. Don't remember it. I am far less familiar with the first couple albums. Need to brush up
Alibi from But For The Sun album. There's a live performance on their site.
Check out Richie Kotzen
Kotzen is amazing. Saw him several times-he is also a triple threat musician
Ian is always far too humble... he is a rock god
