- A huge thank you to Ian Thornley and Dave McMillan of Big Wreck for making it all the way to the AMS Tone Labs in Mahwah, NJ - even despite their bus breaking down! We were lucky enough to sit down with them and talk about their writing process, how they find inspiration, and of course, all about being a guitar nerd!

I can't believe so many people sleep on this band. Such a signature sound!
The lift is in Diamonds on Ghost 😉
Ian Thornley's voice is fricken magic... Big Wrecks style is all their own, love their stuff.
I love Ian. Criminally underrated
I still remember when 'In Loving Memory Of' came out. I was floored, and still am til this day with this band.
MY SOUL SINGS BIG WRECK
oh man, what a great band.. big big fan!
HA!! Love to see the PJ T-shirt!!! Gonna be at the Seattle show next week!!!
I've been a fan since '97. Every time they come to Boston it's like a holiday for me. To watch Ian play live is such a treat. He is one of the greats.
Laughed so hard at the part where he talks about the guitar nerds in the front row watching every move on the fretboard. That was literally me when I saw Big Wreck live 😆
Ian Thornley needs to put out an album of that music that is a "bridge too far"... he writes some of the heaviest riffs in rock and he is a savage player; so is Dave and Sekou.
Representing!!!🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦❤️
Man it's so exciting to see these guys FINALLY get some of the recognition they deserve.
Thankful I got to see them live with Brian. RIP ❤️
So first… you’re a poet hands down. “When your shadow is still on this path of mine”… are you kidding me? “I’m all surrounded by the things I thought I’d put away”… your guitar and lyrics together become something larger. Like an intuitive painter. You can take the mechanics only so far but your instinct and intuition make your music come alive. It’s a real gift. We are incredibly grateful. ❤
Wish Big Wreck would come to Australia
They should definitely come to Dublin!!! Pls you would make my husband sooo happy!!!
Saw these guys on Tuesday November 21….Ian is a god! The whole band is phenomenal. I saw em 5 years ago with the originals doing the first album in its entirety, and man…..the whole band is amazing! That voice! His style, and how they mix together. It’s awesome! Big Wreck is HIGHLY underrated! Love this band!
Great interview. The world's most underrated band on earth.
New EP out tomorrow1 Can't wait! Thanks for the interview guys!
So nice to hear from them, new album is great!
Man, I really love that song
RIP Brian Doherty and David Henning....
Great current line up. but then they've all been pretty great...
Fan since day one 🥰
David Henning passed?
David H isn't dead.
@@ROOKTABULA oh my God. I'm so sorry I was misinformed... a Google search says he "Died: January 1, 2002" 😬
Love this band and absolutely loved the In Loving Memory album of which the song "By The Way" came out of and is such a beautiful tune, loved this guy's voice. I can listen to that song over and over and over.
Great interview! Looking forward to seeing them live next week. hopefully they'll mix in a few new songs and/or a few deeper cuts😬
Seeing them for the 5th time, since a club in Winterpig in 98, in December.
The best damn band out there! Best sounding albums!
The Pleasure and the Greed is such an awesome album, but I'll admit I paid no attention to it at the time, and didn't really discover it until a couple of years ago and am kicking myself for having missed it in my life for so many years. It almost amazes me how that masterpiece was a flop.
Every single song on that album has a certain feel to it. All very distinct. All grandiose in their own way. ....and the guitar tunings and tones...to die for.
@@JC_2311 Most of it seems to be a conscious deviation from the formula that made In Loving Memory so successful, and since that's what made them so popular, I think people who latched onto that sound were disappointed. Big Wreck seemed to come from nowhere with ILMO, and people loved it, so I think the people expected more of the same on the second release. When it changed "too much" people didn't know what they were getting so they left the ship. If this were their 3rd or 4th release, having transitioned to it, I think it would have been commercial successful (pretending that their 2nd or 3rd release more conformed to ILMO) giving the people more of what they wanted. You could even argue that had this been their first album it would have been as successful as ILMO. Have more to add, but I don't know, but it's really interesting to wonder why this album didn't do better commercially, when its really so good. Just theories, no assertions.

I love it too but read an old interview and Ian said there was a lot of cringe on there for both him and Brian. I guess the pressure of "we don't hear a single" lead them to do stuff they wouldn't have. Not sure which songs, I'd rather not know!
@user-fj5qf7gt6n from the interview I read, Ian had more a problem with the production on that album. Didn't know of any issues with the songs.
One of the best band ever.
Why is big wreck not the biggest band in the world I don’t know. Incredible musicians.
True. They are incredibly talented and pleasantly distinctive sounding. I think its the rock industry today in general? Minimal media attention despite some really great music being made in the last 20 years. Plus, they are not douchebags demanding attention by acting out in public.
They are true musicians just loving what they do - and that’s enough.
I feel the same way about AlterBridge. Great vocals. Great guitars. Great songs and albums. Great musicians. Decent people. Dedicated fan base. No media attention.
But they have great careers and make a good living doing what they love.
Maybe that’s better than living in a fishbowl?
Brian threw me a pick! Love Sarnia❤❤❤
LOL, I have the matching ball cap to Ian's hoodie...the logo patch for Beau's. (It's a microbrewery in the Ottawa area.)
I'm that guy at the front of the stage, but I'm goin to school. I'm like: "Ohhh, THAT's how he does that!" Been doin it for 50 years.
PRETTY AWESOME, I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH DAVE
Canadian treasure!…..under the radar, but blazing ahead always, great fucking band!
Albatross ❤
I'd love to hang out with ian
Diamonds
Dave is the John Myung of Big Wreck.
If I could, I would ask why Fade Away didn't land on the Tiny Pictures album.
My daughter’s and my faves. The lyric “what you think of me, I cannot control” got her through some crap at school. We got to talk to Ian about it which was awesome. He said that song was part of a contest. Cheers 🍻!
I love pleasure and greed. All way through
Is it "Break" from Ghosts? I can hear from V.M. Bhatt in that......
It would have been great if the interviewers would pipe down for two seconds and let Ian and Dave just finish a sentence.
He drove me nuts! I'm not sure If Ian answered a question fully with out him interupting once.
100%. Worst interviewing skills ever. Ask an open ended question and let the band take it from there
Totally! Please do better interviewers...
Please watch Rick Beato interview an artist. I can understand the excitement of being face to face with someone whom you may be a big fan of, but yes would have been better at times to let them speak without the interrupting.
Agreed. I found it so annoying that I was unable to watch the whole interview, despite Big Wreck being my favorite band and Ian in particular one of my favorite individual artists.
I hate when interviews dont shit up. We aren’t here for you, we are here for your guests.
Let the artists talk
No entiendo como Ian no termino cantando en Soundgarden o por lo menos haciendo con Big Wreck un cover de Chris. Algún día será no?
Linda remera de Pearl Jam Dave
🇨🇦👽🎸👍🏼
Lovely interview, but way way way too short !
What no gear talk?
I wonder if BW is trying to surpass Spinal Tap's drummer tally?
Why’s the guy in the pearl jam shirt there? 🙄😂
He's the bass player, fool
@@ROOKTABULA😂
He's holding down the rhythm
would like it alot more if the host wasnt talking all over Ian.
stop talking over your guest im interested in Ians thoughts not the host.
