Ian Thornley: REAL MEANING of "BLOWN WIDE OPEN"

- Опубликовано: 18 окт 2024
- Ian Thornley Interview: Early struggles Big Wreck had getting launched, tough times including not eating for days at a time, backstory to a bunch of his greatest hits, learning how to process and communicate better, getting rid of anger and relaxing more, not letting business or anything else impact your music, things that make him happy, becoming more easy going, learning from making mistakes and uninformed decisions in days gone by. GREAT conversation, very sincere guy and just an amazingly talented player and songwriter

I play in a local cover band... Our drummer says "I wanna do a song by Big Wreck. It's called, 'That Song', ok?". As the singer, I am like, who the fuck is Big Wreck??? I buy the song. I listen to it over and over and over. The next day, I buy everything I can find. Hands down the best band out there today!!! I am a disciple and spread the news every chance I get.
Haha, awesome story John, thanks for sharing and glad you enjoyed this. Peace!
@@EveryoneLovesGuitar great interview. You know you got it right when people watch the whole thing. Keep em coming!
@@xxstormbringerxx Thank you for listening John - have a great weekend man!
Devin Townsend considers In Loving Memory to be the best Canadian rock album of all time. Praise doesn't get much better than that.
That is cool Todd Ders! Thanks for listening 💥🎶🔥 subscribe: elg.fun/subscribe
it just simply isn’t to most people.
Tragically Hip, Rush, The Guess Who, April Wine, and bachman turned overdrive all have more successful and to most people, better albums
@@fredsystra7584 cool
As much as I love Devin Townsend and Ian Fletcher Thornley I completely disagree with Devin’s opinion on the best Canadian rock album being “In Loving Memory Of…”. Rush “Moving Pictures” already has that honor. 🇺🇸 🇨🇦
Enjoyed the interview. I’m late at it but catching up. Saw Thornley open for Nickelback in Milwaukee around 2002. I was up front fortunately, my jaw dropped to the floor.
Blazing hot rock band. It’s 2024, still loving it.
Glad you enjoyed the interview @clsieczka, and thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !
Monster player!!!!! He can do it all ! Put this man in any genre and will pull it off most successfully.....
Yes, I agree @kennethhacker3014 - thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !
Ian is such a phenomenal talent. I know it's cliche, but he should be so much better known.
I agree, but people who know... know him, for sure. He's a brilliant musician and overall talent. Thx for listening Doug
@@EveryoneLovesGuitar Always love your interviews! Discovering Big Wreck was a gamechanger for me.
@@AZFunk Thanks Doug, appreciate your support - have a great weekend man !
Soooo glad they couldn't find another singer. He's got the best voice in Rock right now.
Always said Ian sounds like Chris Cornell through a tube amp. Warmer tone but similar voices. Plus an insane guitar player! 🤘
When i first heard blown wide open, i thought it was a new soundgarden song. Have followed them ever since. Amazing stuff!
Yes, I agree @albangel1689 - thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 ! Sounds a LOT like Chris Cornell for sure :-)
@@EveryoneLovesGuitar canadian talent lol. Do you have anything with Jeff martin?Martin? Not sure if this is the producer of this video. I do know Chris cornel solo stuff has one of big wrecks members I believe.
Shout out to all the huge King's X freaks! Great story about the dinner!! "If you listen to Steven Wilson it's not three chords and the truth!!!" Would have loved to be a fly on the wall for that conversation. Love King's X, Rush, Dream Theater, Steven Wilson and a growing appreciation for Big Wreck.
Only discovered Big wreck and Ian recently, really love the musicality and his guitar playing is so good . No negative comments here ! Hi from the U.K. 👍🏻
Right on Dub Boyz, thanks for listening! 🎸💥🙌🏻
One of the most amazing composers, musicians, vocalists of our time. I enjoy EVERY song. Over and over.
I think we all can easily relate to Blown Wide Open. Magnetic song.
I agree! Thanks for listening :-)
I will never hear the song "inhale" the same after this. 😊 Great interview, honest and sincere just like his music. So refreshing greatness exists. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it and Thank you for listening 🔥 🎶 🎸 !
i discovered Big Wreck 4 years ago, listening everyday since.. such a great band, powerful, melodic, catchy, high level musical chops, they got everything.. Ian is such an incredible talent, is almost intimidating, hope good things for him and the band in the future, they deserve it
What's your favorite album?
Similar story. Was shown big wreck in 2014 and have listened to them every day since. Car? Wreck. Shower? Wreck. Training? Wreck. 😂🤘
Guy is a unicorn of a talent. No one else I can even think of who can both sing this well (with range and power) while being able to playing like a virtuoso (whatever that means).
Yes, I agree JeffMacc - thanks for listening!
I know man its crazy huh
it's as if he is Robert Plant and Jimmy Page wrapped in one. He's a one of a kind.
Check out Richie Kotzen.
@@seventhformfor sure but songs aren’t as beautifully written on the whole as big wreck for me. And I’m a huge Kotzen fan
I love this guy
Thank you for listening @Riverdeepnwide! 🎉🔥😇
I’ve been lucky enough to see Big Wreck/ Thornley live several times and the musicianship on display at every show has been nothing short of jaw-dropping; each band member is a virtuoso.
My last concert before the pandemic was Big Wreck, in Montreal, Quebec
My first concert after the pandemic will be Big Wreck, in St. John’s, Newfoundland
It drives me nuts that he isn’t bigger. He’s hands down the best guitar player I’ve ever seen live. He’s also the best singer I’ve seen, his voice is absolutely incredible!!! I always bring people to shows who aren’t necessarily aware of them other than their big hits. They always come away amazed
Yes, I agree Matthew Clark - thanks for listening!
The selfish upside though is that when he comes to town, the venue is always intimate. You can get nice and close. Price is awesome. Often those smaller venues sound better as well. I do agree though, his offering is so well rounded. Great lyricist. Great song writer. GREAT guitar player. GREAT voice. He could be huge if the mobs wanted him to be.
Absolutely LOVE anything that Ian has ever put out. Some of my favorites never get their due. Control, Diamonds, Your Song, and Might Be The End are so well crafted.
Thank you for listening @TomYaboYoga! 🎉🔥😇
Thanks for your song list. I’m a HUGE Big Wreck junkie but hadn’t dug into Thornley albums. Might Be The End is incredible!!! I know what I’m doing for the rest of the day 😜
Ian is the man! Every record is killer.
Ian Thornley should Rule the World!!! Love 💗 him and his Legacy
Love this one of the best most honest interviews I’ve watched in a while Ian Thornley is an amazing human being love from Moncton and Ian work on your inhaling skills 😂😂😂😂
Glad you enjoyed the interview @seanmacp, and thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 ! lol@ inhaling!
OMG... Live in San Diego & JUST NOW discovering this band. The arrangements are out of this world!!! Please don't stop bringing the beautiful sounds!!!!
Great interview. Big Wreck's live shows are phenomenal, and meeting them was a real treat. Super nice guys.
Fantastic interview. The first song I heard of his was "so far, so good" while in a Target. No lie. 😂 I didn't know who he was, but I know now. The latest album plays on a loop for me. Humble guy; phenomenal talent.
But for the sun, I couldn't stop with that one
Wonderful interview - you let your guest speak and it was an encouraging environment. Well done.
Ian is so generous and kind.
I'm surprised that no one had asked him if he uses the piano in any of his writing. He started as a keyboard player apparently.
Thanks for your kind words @martymcglame7781 and glad you enjoyed this 👍🏻🎸♫
I saw them live in '97 for their In Loving Memory Of tour in Canada and have been a fan ever since. One of the few bands that sound as good live as they do on the recording.
Same here, (I'm guessing the same overall tour), although it was while they were in the states (Minneapolis, Minnesota) and opening for Dream Theater. I am forever grateful to that evening for being introduce to this band. I'm still listening to this first album of theirs decades later ("Oh My" is my favorite track). One funny "between songs banter" thing that Ian said, that for whatever immature nugget of my brain hung on to, is when he said, "Man, this microphone smells like piss!"
I'm only 20% into this video and it's already one of (if not THE) best interview with Ian I've seen. Thank you.
Thanks Scott, glad you enjoyed it
First time I saw this band was at CosmoFest in TO.
Paulo and Brian (RIP) were in the band.
I was completely blown away (and I’m not a newb..seen/met lots of amazing players) and what really amazed me was that Ian played and sang equally well. Really made an impression on me. I’ve seen them close to a dozen times since. I had tickets to the 2020 tour with Tea Party. Damn you , Covid.
Thanks anthony silva, Rock on! 🎸🙌🏻🔥🎶
Thornley's "Come Again" chorus is one of the best chorus I've ever heard
Great, great interview. I discovered Big Wreck when I was working in Toronto in 2014. Been a big fan ever since.
Telling line the one that he's never had the "big hit", so he's not beholden to "commerce". The more I know about this guy, the more I like him.

Thx for the interview! Saw Big Wreck here in Calgary last Nov. 9th. Great show! The Thornley albums are great too! BW gets a lot of airplay up here on rock radio. One of our greatest.
Yes, I agree GerardMT - thanks for listening!
That was a great interview. First time on your channel. Just rediscovered BW, only knowing “The Oaf”. Really impressed by a lot of Ian’s music. The guy uses melody and chord progressions so well. Just great music.
Welcome aboard! Thanks for listening Bryan 🎸🎸🎵
Great interview thank you!! I am such a huge Ian and big wreck fan I enjoyed this. And by the way … I love the way Ian inhales 😄
Glad you enjoyed the interview @user-mr1cp4zh3i, and thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !
I used to and still to this day listen to “In Loving Memory of...” on a loop. I purchased the cd back in 1997, the year I graduated from High School because the minute I heard “The Oaf”, I knew I was hooked. It doesn’t get old. Only gets better every time. And same with the “Pleasure and The Greed” album, etc... Ian Thornley, thanks for the kick ass songs and thanks for this awesome interview! Keep on Rocking brother! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Dude i kno. 98' i heard like 1 verse on 104.5 from tulsa THAT SONG" ya kno. I thot genuise
I drove 2 hrs with sum friends to get the cd or cassete... 98', firdbird. Hauling ass
Then we played it on the back porch until dew started falling n SHOCKING US. Lol.
You are on a roll. Two of my favorites of late, with Ty and now Ian. Ian is truly one of the best guitarists alive. Excellent and very thoughtful interview.
Thanks Sonically Disruptive, Rock on! 🎸🙌🏻🔥🎶
BW at wolfstock 2013 in Peterborough-one of my top 5 concerts of all time. Ian took no prisoners and his inhaling was spectacular that night.
lol his inhaling is the most talked-about aspect of the interview awesome.... thanks for listening hystat!
That was great. I listened to "That Song" growing up and rediscovered him when the local station was playing a song from Tiny Pictures on the radio. It's probably my favourite album, mostly because of nostalgia, because he's only gotten better. The reformed big wreck is fantastic and his solo stuff is flipping magical! Great interview, thanks again.

I’m a huge fan of Ian and Big Wreck. I’ve met him once before in the UK at a Suhr Guitar demo clinic. He was a super sweet guy. Talent aside it’s comforting to know some of our heroes are decent human beings 🙏
Thanks again.
Thanks for your kind words Danny Beardsley and glad you enjoyed this 👍🏻🎸♫
My favorite musician and my favorite band.....and Im from NJ, USA (not canada) one question i hoped would be asked because ive never heard Ian mention it is the cliched question of how did the band name Big Wreck come about
Everyone should love Ian
Omg great interview. I was reeled in man. IAN YOUR MY HERO. Great uplifting touching time with your music n yur interviews.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks SO MUCH for doing this. My favorite musician and band, but there's scarce little "behind the music" info/stories out there for Ian and BW. Great questions and interview.

This man is a super class musician!! Really I like him.
Mi amigo, yes he is, very talented! Have a great weekend Jose.
EveryoneLovesGuitar you too amigo!!!!
To Ian: I met you twice spontaneously in passing in Toronto. I did then as much as I do now wish to sit down for a coffee, or beer and just chat. I’ll buy of course.
This interview, among many others have illuminated how much I would learn from a guy like you because I think we’re wired similarly. I love and share the way you think about music philosophically, which helps me as an up and coming musician.
Fun Fact, I’ve never tried the Suhr brand but definitely will now, but I know you have (or have played) a Frank Bros. Guitar. I have my own custom too and the Frank Twins are good friends of mine. Would love to see you rip one on your instagram!
Anyways, I’ll be kickin around Toronto and I hope to run into you again sometime soon.
As for the inhaling comment, I find it just as hilarious as you do Craig and I marvel at the odd angle of a comment like that. God, sometimes these Internet warriors eh?
Hey! Listen to Big Wreck! This man as band are genius! Check out the Suhr factory live videos!
BTW, I met you on Grace Street in Toronto before the Grace street album came out. It was an extra treat when I saw the title of that album!
Thanks Christopher James, Rock on! 🎸🙌🏻🔥🎶
Such an excellent interview and depth in topics, discussions. Thanks for this!
Glad you enjoyed the interview Jay Flugum, and thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !
Some of the questioning was pretty blunt, but respect to Ian for providing some great answers, really honest guy. It was cool to hear about some of the history of the band and really glad to hear he’s in a good place now. I have loads of respect for his mindset around money and art
This channel came up in my feed while window shopping Suhr guitars online. Ian is a monster around here in the GTA. When ILMO came out it was like oh shit....he upped the anti for me as a guitar player. His playing really grabbed me. They were and still are one of my favs since day one. Great interview! Far from the normal blah blah blah scripted crap. 👍 Solid stuff. 🇨🇦

Glad you enjoyed it!
Must he exhale so much! Great interview. Ian is so tasteful in his playing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great interview. Ian Thornley is on my must see live bucket list. I have not been excited by music like this, probably since I discovered Rush.
Forrest has a new n band called The Forrest Williams Democracy they have released 3 singles in 2023 all can be found on RUclips. If you are a Big Wreck fan you'll love it
Great story’s, good guy, great music !

Haha, thanks Nick-O. Appreciate your support and glad you are digging the show!
Nice interview 👍🏼 I knew Ian briefly in high school, was a cool guy even back then.
Did he inhale?
haha i'm going to have Ian run a workshop on this for all Everyone Loves Guitar listeners lol
What a great interview. Thank you!
Thanks for listening
Great interview! I could say so much...from Ian's perspective about the music to his influences and coming to terms with it all. You were able to draw a lot out of him, and he was willing to share a lot.
I realize the early days of the band were not easy but as a fan of the band, it was magical. They came around so often, surely out of necessity but you didn't think about that. You enjoyed the gift of music that band shared time and time again. All these years later I look back and see it as a moment in time I'm glad I had and wish I can relive. But it can't happen again.
It is awesome that Ian is still sharing his gift to the world and in a way that you said in the interview as being childlike. If Ian is jaded about the business side of music it certainly doesn't show in his work. One of the best decisions I ever made was jumping on the Ian bandwagon...he hasn't ever let me down!
Thank you for listening cutting the chord! 🎉🔥😇
And not conforming to something they're not
Loved this interview. I'm hoping Ian is still doing this at an old age (making art) and I can go to see it, and put some gas in his Yacht.
Thank you for this! love the man and the music. Cheers
Thanks for listening Chad!
This was an amazing interview. Nice to hear the story about Portland ME. I would have been living there at the time.

As always, great interview! It seems he has the best of both worlds: Famous enough to make a living from his music, but not so much that every "bad inhale" is discussed on Blabbermouth!👍
I had hoped that at some point (as a fan) the similarities between Ian's and Chris Cornell's voice would come up, but maybe he specifically didn't want to talk about it 😄

Even with tie dyed crocks Ian is still the sexiest man alive 🤩❤️
I watched the interview a few weeks ago, but now I can't quite find the part where Thornley talks about Bruce Cockburn. (I have a close friend who's a big-time Cockburn aficionado; he also thinks that Cockburn is underrated as a guitarist.) I've been rewinding and fast-forwarding ad infinitum! Can someone help, please?
Hi Heather, Ian mentioned Bruce Cockburn at 8:40
@@Riverdeepnwide , thanks so much!
If you haven't already, you may want to interview John Suhr...
MY OPINION.... FAR AS BALANCE. THORNLEY IS THE G.O.AT
Maybe the guy complaining about Ian's breathing was really referring to the BW song Inhale? Just a thought...
“The Oaf” is the be all end all, crazy tuning, as in all his great music, and even Ian cannot find another tune to solve or answer “The Oaf”. Much like VH had a certain motif, album to album, Ian could have made answers to that HoeDown, stomping, feel with grinding lyrics and feel..... he has basically said... he has moved on as a person and writer and “The Oaf” will never be solved. It was like he could have had an entire kick ass rock album with every song feeling as heavy and fun as “The Oaf”... his heaviest song could have played for and entire album had he wrote around that one swan song.... he missed the boat by not doing just that.....
What am I missing,, im waiting for his meaning of blown wide open...
Can you share what is this "discipline" you discuss off camera?
Damaso, can you tell me where in the video we discuss it?
@@EveryoneLovesGuitar I think at the part where you tell Ian that he is a very disciplined musician based on what you guys were talking about a day in his life before the interview started
so embarrassed as a canadian that i've never seen big wreck live. was supposed to on their summer tour, but then the pandemic happened. ticket is still good for when they reschedule, so i'll right that wrong eventually.
Wait... Canadians usually start with "I'm sorry..." not "I'm so embarrassed..." ;-) Thanks for listening @nurvsy and glad you enjoyed this - enjoy Big Wreck in concert when they come back around!
But for the sun isn’t fuckin great ..... it’s freakin awesome genius not one weak song unreal
And he just solved it..... he said he was happy not to have a big hit because others would profit from it...if I was a co-producer.... Ian and I would have went for the low having fruit and make 10 “The Oafs”... heavy and hard edged...smart lyrics, big song craft and heavier than the proverbial drop “D” bullshit bands get away with. Ian is deeper as a human and complex and has a huge musical background backed with education..... no wonder he did not want to write songs all around “the oaf” and that heaviness and sweetness.... he could do a slide blues album like Gary Moore, who was famous for his rock but really got into his own by playing the BLUES.....and getting good at it.... solving those musical problems... I need to work with Ian and or write all my songs around his OAF..... something.....
His VH Tribute Band = Ian Halen?! 😂
😂😂😂
He could have written an entire album with the heaviness of The Oaf, and Fall Through the Cracks, from that first album, much like Aerosmith, AC/DC, Van Halen etc... Ian Missed the Boat by not building a theme or motif around heavy sounds.... so.... I am going to start my writing around The Oaf and make a whole album on crazy tunings and HEAVY..... thank for the idea Ian... sorry you did not do it... not sorry
I don't hate how Ian inhales, but I've noticed for years that sometimes when he inhales, it's coming kind of through an almost closed mouth. Sounds like he's inhaling after a drag on a cigarette. I tend to notice that kind of thing. Sounds people make. This particular sound is far from hate worthy. I don't event find it irritating. Couple of examples of Ian's louder inhales? 1:24:21 or 1:25:00
Also, great interview! Enjoyed it.
Thanks Anthony... man you know your inhaling!
@@EveryoneLovesGuitar Lol! Well, not really. Like I say I just notice weird crap like that. Stuff that once you hear it, you can't unhear it, you know? I guess for that one guy Ian mentioned in the interview, it was an issue. Lord knows why. Dude HAS to breathe! There's probably a quote in here somewhere... "It's not the sound you make when you inhale, it's what you do with your breath afterwards that really matters." - Anthony Packwood 2020. For Ian, he's a great example of doing the right things with breath! That voice!
Every song on “in loving memory” is good? Really?
Ñ
"He was the 10 or 15th or 20th guitar guy I thought of..." 🙄
Man I just hate the way Ian inhales :P
