Why aren't these guys more recognized by the Canadian music industry is mind boggling! Ian Thornley and the guys are some of the most talented musicians ive ever heard!! Thank you Big Wreck!!
They are incredible. Prolly didn't suck the right d, if you know what I'm saying. They aren't sell outs, just love making music they love to make! You don't stroke the ego of some megalomanic music producer, good luck. That's just a wild guess though. But it sounds about right when applying logic and some basic knowledge of the music industry.
I feel like most things in canada just suck.. we are a cultureless culture and no one seems to have any interest in anything
He writes this stuff, plays it and produces it. He plays killer guitar and a fantastic voice all while looking like he just out of bed 5 min ago. I love Ian's music. Every song takes you for a ride.
He does have a little bed head. Lol
I know, right!! hahaha Always impressed with his talent and professionalism. An unappreciated Canadian talent.
He is an amazing performer, writer, player….and Canadian!! I can understand why this group didn’t get more attention world wide? A real oversight if you ask me!!
It is a corporate party they don’t even know or care real bands playing real instruments
🙏
This is quite possibly the most beautiful sequence of sounds I've ever heard in my entire life...
What interviews are you referring to?
And I quite possibly have to completely agree with you. Thornley is king.
Totally titillating to the senses..
Yes this comment captures exactly what I'm thinking.
I was born in 1953. I have no idea why my friends of my age don't know them like I do. Love them!
I feel like I’m over here single-handedly trying to get this video 1 million views
Ur not alone
@@Jarrettguitar #teamwork 🙌
This is absolute greatness.
RIP Brian Doherty.
Which guitar player was Brian?
@@karenbaumgartel6077 - Stage Left.
@@Nblades78thanks! Although I'm from Canada, I've been in Germany since 2000 and this band is new to me. There's an interesting interview with Thornton on a podcast called The Stumble Forward from September 2023.
He's a songwriter. He's a guitar player. He's a singer. And he's Canadian! This man blows my mind wide open.
without a doubt the most underrated musician / songwriter / guitar player / VOICE of my time. Ian , u r IT!
EPIC, so moving. And his voice absolutely kicks in this, better than the original I'd say for sure
🌹
yup
Absolutely!
I couldn't have said it better!
Ian Thornley kills it in every way: vocals, guitar, lyrics, composition
epic performance, I keep coming back to listen to this version of his song over and over. One of the best and most underrated Canadian bands.
Release this entire show as a live album!
The 2014 version
I feel like this is something that should happen. These guys absolutely rock!! Ian, dude, you are significantly talented. Thank you for helping shape the 90s in my life.
I was at a summer festival. Tea party was supposed to come on stage. they did not make it....Somehow however they had an emergency band ready...that emergency band was BIG WRECK!!!! I had seen Tea Party 3 times and was not that excited, but then big Wreck came on...oh man...I lost my mind...Sadly no one else appeared to have any idea who they were and I bounced and cheered and sung every word at the top of my lungs while 20K dumbfounded teenagers looked at me confused.
Underrated is an understatement.
Big Wreck= Canada's best kept secret
Along with I Mother Earth
Ryan Berry we knew about him in Colorado since 95 ish. IFT is a master. So thrilled to see them back again and touring .
...and Devin Townsend
I agree there is Billy talent as well but and they are great an all but Big wreck is just something else
But everyone knows about Beiber and Bryan Adams...go figure. Lol
Quite possibly the best rock performance in the history of the world!!
I’ve had the pleasure of knowing this band personally,,, in My opinion Live they are phenomenal better than the record,,, bunch of great guys👍👍👍👍 down to earth👍👍
Gotta be one of the best live performances... vocals give chills and those riffs are flawless
Epic song writer, guitar player and singer. Why is this guy not slaying the musical universe?
It isn't slaying the universe because people these days have the attention span of 2 minute hooks and no appreciation of musical talent.
This band is unbelivable live. Saw them Friday night at the Paradise in Boston. Blown away by the talent!
Easily one of the BEST BASS lines ever recorded.
Pure raw emotion, wrapped in velvet. Set gently on the floor inside the front door that's been kicked down for delivery.
Its just like magic..three guitars usually step all over each other these guys just make it sound like one huge wall of beautiful sound..love when the bass kicks in for the chorus
Love love love this guy, recently saw them Nov 2023 at the Commodore ballroom in Vancouver, highly recommend catching them live with opener Texas Kings, they blew the roof off the house
Listening to Him is just like drinking a fine bottle wine only just abit better.
You dont hear vocals like that very often. Also if Soundgarden ever needs a front man he is the guy. God has blessed you with an amazing voice and your guitar is like an atmospherice sound....amazing tone.
goosebumps and stop everything I am doing when this plays. Ian Thornley is the best musician to come from Canada period. Please tell everyone who appreciates music to give this a listen and remember it's recorded live...one take one masterful performance!!!!
I think Burton Cummings would disagree. Lol ... Lots of great singers and musicians from Canada...
Devin Townsend is also an amazing Canadian musician
Don’t forget Rush, of course.
live, nothing compares... Everyone needs to see them live, in a smaller venue and "feel" the music. They aren't just there to play to an audience, they connect and no 2 concerts are ever the same! Kudos to the best band I have ever seen bar none!
It’s absolutely criminal that bands like Big Wreck and The Tea Party are still relatively unknown.
i tried pressing charges
@@BAHDK fuckin corrupted justice system this planet runs on 👨⚖️ 😆
But we know!!!
The talents of Gilmour, Lifeson and Clapton would watch Ian play and each would be in both awe and admiration....
I had to come back here to watch the video. I didn't believe these guys were actually playing live. They definitely earned a fan in me.
Thornley is a god. 20 years later and his voice is still smooth as butter.
This guy's voice gives me chills. He is so great. Reminds me of Chris Cornell.
But better!
Def channeling Chris Martin and Dave Matthews
Definitely has the timbre of Cornell but not the range. He is his own style, which makes his music so rad. His guitar skills are above and beyond Cornell's as well. They're just two different guys/players.
If Chris Cornell could be channeling prog rock like Genesis but playing it in the style of Pink Floyd, you got the essence of Big Wreck. Instantly familiar, and yet nothing is like them.
No he doesn’t sound like Chris Cornell at all but he is awesome
R.I.P. Brian Doherty. Beautiful performance.
They are astounding live.
If Big Wreck isnt on your Top10...you need to add them!!
I worked production with these guys WAY back at a college venue in northern Ontario in the mid 90's and it's criminal that BW and other awesome Canadian acts have to work 100 times harder to get international recognition and rarely get it. Look at some of signed acts with absolutely no talent then throw in bands like BW etc and it boggles the mind and makes one think...WHY?
I read in an interview that Ian wasn't expecting any big headlines because of the pressure Atlantic Records put on him to make music that he didn't want to create, so instead of being just another alternative rock band making it big on catchy, less substantial songs, he decided to settle for a more Canadian vibe. Keep in mind, before Chuck, Paulo, and Dave came along, the band was still primarily labelled as an American sound. In many respects, people in Boston still take pride in knowing that the band was formed there. Knowing that a young guy like myself could rediscover this sound and apply it to my own lifestyle, all the while albums are still being released, it gives me hope that the genre isn't dead yet. And now with Brian living in Toronto and the rest of the band members being Canadian, we can rest easy knowing that the band has made itself a national symbol and I'm so grateful that they didn't tarnish their music by giving in to media pressures.
Maybe for the same reason Matthew Good gave, that there's a sort of 'game' you've got to play with the label and charts, music videos, interviews etc etc. All the expectations and pressure that gets placed on you to be a certain way, in order to cater to the industry and the machine that americas music industry is.
There are a lot of rock bands both American and Canadian that don't get the attention they deserve. I think it's because the industry sucks and the average consumer listens to garbage music. Ever heard of a band called Virgo Merlot or Dark New Day? Probably not..
Tim Nunyer Bizniz thanks for sharing
Duder: I took the stage with my band on a Tuesday in 98 in a little bar, off night, far from full. They SMOKED. He told me he actually liked my original that got (very) minimal airplay and I asked him WHY he was on tour with the clone of Bush(Nirvana clone) with the douchebag lead singer that looked like Jesus?? He kinda shrugged and I asked: "Same management?" He smiled, slapped my shoulder and moved on.
That band was Nickelback and Big Wreck broke up a few years later.
Proof there's no justice or god ffs.
This guy should be world wide, I don't get it. Love his tunes, great player, writer and singer.
Kicks this shit out of most all to this day
That intro sounds soooo good. Hopefully that concert in Montreal isn't cancelled in April
This is musicianship. Young players take notice. Learn to let a song BREATHE. Also Ian's little vocal run at 6:37 is just...wow.
+drumtravelfun
You mean BREATHE, my nigga. Learn Chinglish and then come back, my nigga.
+Raffie Quler good thing you pointed that out , it was impossible to figure out what they meant until you clarified it
drumtravelfun
well said that's the music is played!!
drumtravelfun Nice catch. Also, check out how he is playing notes that are following his vocal melody. Real nice. In my exp, I mainly here this in jazz. In rock, LedZep does it as well. Also, that guitar into is great, add libbing around the chords to come. This live version brought this song to a whole new level , for me..
drumtravelfun Very well said, mon ami. 'Musicianship' pretty much nails it. I haven't heard this song in a long time and coming across this version of it, well...simply brought it back to life for me.
I hear Big Wreck is big down under. Anyone here from Australia?
I've never heard a guitar cry quite like this. What a sound.
Sound techs were on point tonight.
Kocis19 snare is killer...thumbs up
What a difference it can make.
They're so fucking good live. Juicy tones and squeezing out overtones from the instruments. Musicality of the band is amazing.
Can’t wait to see them this November @ Vancouver Commodore🎶❤
Most Underrated Canadien Rock Band, merci.
Thornley and Ritchie Kotzen are so fucking underrated. In this dayy and age we need more of theses guys
YES YES YES a thousand times YES
If my soul spoke out loud. I think this is what it would sound like. Every time I hear it tears well up
He gets higher on my list every time I listen.. and I've been a fan since his band's first US release.
Have you heard Big Wreck's latest (especially Fear & Cowardice)? GREAT tasty variety!

This recording of Blown Wide Open literally gave me goosebumps. I was supposed to go to this concert but couldn't make it. I've seen them live 4 times but this whole set is just incredible...Simply incredible.
Thornley's vocal range has gotten better with time. More gritty, more passionate, and more bone chillingly awesome. These live performances are something new I've come across, I've been pushing Big Wreck on everyone I know since I was about 10. 15 years later and I'm still in awe at what they can do. Please come to Texas sometime soon, we need more grass roots ROCK here.
Brian Doherty rest in peace, gunna miss you when I see them again.
Hands down one of my all time best singers. And the man can play guitar. The whole band is fantastic.
Holy cow... these guys are good. Where have I been? That guitarist is talented as hell.
I think I said (or thought) approximately 4-ish years ago that I would be pleased to get buried with this song playing on repeat. I recognize the illogic in this, but, after all this time, I stand by that shit. Period.
There isn't a better band. This particular lineup cannot be beat and no one will ever change my mind.
lol. Metallica, for one.
That's how you sing with emotion!
These dudes ROCK!!
Extreme passion. EPIC, so moving. And his voice absolutely kicks in this, better than the original I'd say for sure
2014 Suhr factory version is the platinum standard
I went to this show. Epic memory.
I remember sitting in the back of a Big Wreck concert and hearing “that song” just being blown away as the crowd sings....
Hands down, of the the best Canadian guitarists out there. I could watch this video over and over. True organic rock...real music. Would love to see them live again.
damn it, whatta song and the interpretation ! .. how could I've missed this ?
When I used to watch these guys play at college town bars in the 90’s, I knew greatness was in the future. This song brings the great memories flowing back to my weary mind.

My absolute favorite Big Wreck song
Absolutely breathtaking to see these guys live. Was at a concert of theirs right after a bandmate had passed away, and the emotion Thornely put into his singing and playing was unbelievable. Loved the atmospheric playing, especially the medley's of Albatross/Amazing Grace. 😭
Just a chilling performance of a great tune. It's criminal that Big Wreck is not a bigger draw.
The fingernail on his pinky has more talent than I could ever have. Love this band.
They're in _MY_ rock and roll hall of fame, that's all I have to say.

I love everything they do. It is so calming to me.
I wish there would be more Canada in Italy! I love you guys, you're great!!!!
This song speaks to that place in me that needs to be “blown wide open” ... and I think that’s why I get the goosebumps/healing every time...can anyone else relate ?
Derek Matthew Guitar - every single time; it's my 'go to'
Yes, I can relate. It's pretty painful actually...
And these guys aren't more popular because? Hands down one of the greatest bands of my lifetime.
Ian Thornely is awesome.
Thornley
The break at 6:35 is damn heart-breakingly ethereal! Voice into guitar into...the blown wide open.
Probably the BEST Canadian rock band in existence. Nay, the BEST ROCK BAND in existence at the moment, and have been so for quite some time.
if I could smash the "like" button a thousand times, I would.
Soundtrack to my 1998 life - FINALLY saw them in concert on Canada Day here in Brampton a billion years later, and three weeks later in Guelph.
Had me in tears to finally be witness to this in person.
Thanks for that, guys!
Ian is just so inspiring. And the bald guitar player/singer stage left is amazing. Secret weapon.
Paulo Neto
Rip
Desmen Johnston 💔
A shame Brian left us and also a shame Paulo left the band they’re in better places now
Paolo is a gem, yes🤘🏻
This song has gravity to begin with, this performance simply multiplies it. Very emotive rendition.
Soundgarden and Pink Floyd just had a lovechild. Wow!
In Loving Memory was such a great album. I still break it out every now and then.
I bought that CD when it first came out. Living near Niagara Falls U.S., you had stations like 102.1 EDGE and 97.7 HTZ FM were playing these guys regularly. I guess I'm lucky in that regard. Sadly, they fell apart after that album. Yeah, Thornley was decent as Ian is a great musician, singer in his own right. But Big Wreck was, and still is a BAND full of talented players. when you listen to "Come Again" or "So Far. So Good" compared to "The Oaf", "That Song", or "Ghosts" you can instantly hear the difference.
I think The Pleasure and the Greed is just a tad better but, both albums are fantastic.
Firmly in my personal Top 5 of all time...
It was their magnum opus
Just fantastic !!!! Amazing vocals and musicianship .....
I absolutely Love this version!!
Another “new” band that’s been around for years..
Alas I am always late to the party.. glad I got here eventually though😏
was utterly blessed to be able to see them at smith's here in atlanta on the pleasure and greed tour when i was in high school. my dad fought to get me into the club. one of the best performances i've ever witnessed.

I've been a fan for a long, long time but that version was absolutely killer man!!! Cant get enough of these guys
Been listening to these dudes for 20 years and they'll never stop blowing my mind.
Double talented with singing and playing at the same time...
So damn good, like seeing an old friend, who's talented, beyond belifef, so r all his friends,
I know it's selfish of me, but I'm so glad I have only recently been introduced to Ian's genius, and this awesome band in 2019. Now I have so much more fantastic music to explore and wallow in for years to come. 🤘🏽😎
Such a powerful and beautiful vibe !!!!!!! Ian, so underrecognized , so absolutely AMAZING...….
They played a free show in my home town Leduc Alberta !
That tone. That jam at the start wow
Goosebumps every time.. NOTHING like these guys. I wish the world could listen.
That was absolutely unbelievable! Beautiful.
Multilayered talent creates one of the world's greatest " Eargasm " , Most Satisfying ! Thanks !
It blows my mind WIDE open that these guys arnt known world wide, so damn good!!!
awesome guitar sounds! Not sure what he is doing at the beginning (maybe jamming) but those sounds coming out of that guitar are epic!
About the 50th time I've listened to this song, I set the computer on repeat, it is now my anthem.
undoubtedly some of the best musicians, I ever heard in my life.
Damn Ian....those tones ....there's not a word available to describe them.
Ian Thornley is a superstar!
One of my favorite songs EVER.
same
I need them to do the new album at suhr
@@trey2325 oh man, that would RULE!
My god I hate RUclips commercials. Like put them at the end or the beginning... but dead in the middle of a music performance? These guys deserve the respect to be heard without interruption (even if it was from 8 years ago)
❤️ Thank you Ian Thornley.
