Just got mine this week. The chessmen aren't all that great: Coarse, too bright Sheesham, and rather crude. Pretty much what you'd expect at the retail price. But thanks to them being non-magnetic, they can be easily replaced with a superior set, provided the bases are smaller than the 40mm field size. Chessbazaar, Royal Chess Mall and other companies offer such nicer sets in the size required. The King Performance itself is a nice machine: highly customizable, strong engine, etc. I just wish they'd integrated a BT module inside the unit, which could have been easily achieved, but of course they want to sell accessories separately. Also, NO battery. Again because they want to make some extra cash.
Think the DGT Cantaur is better and I beleive in Expert plays a stronger game. Having to push down on board to make a move takes away some of the charm of playing a chess computer. I love how you dont need to press on the board on the DGT, just makes a big difference when playing chess. It was a toss up between them both and settled for the DGT. More humanlike play, easier to play. You dont accually need all those extra levels unless your a real chess nut. The DGT e ink screen is nice and not looking like put of the 90's. Setup and just play and adjusts to your playing style and level. For someone wanting casual games of chess the DGT is all you need. Also don't need a power supply or buy an expensive battery addon
Not sure - I got a Centaur and it didn’t work out of the box, some issue with the sensors. After returning it I’ve ordered the King, I just don’t trust another DGT.
I waited to pick this up finally. I really like this chess computer. Chess pieces have just the right amount of weight and feel and the sensor to activate each square does not require much effort, although it may seem that way on the video. It's the perfect blend of old school Fidelity Sensory Chess-like playing with much faster and human-like game play. So far, I am very pleased with this set. I have several chess set such as ChestNut Air, ChessUp, and Millennium Chess Pro 2024 Edition, and Square Off Neo. So far, two of my favorite is the King Performance and Chess Pro 2024 Edition.
@@ChessHouse Very much! There's one glich i think. I'm not able to reverse the colors. No big deal in itself. I just move around the table. I have also two vintage machines. Kasparov Barracuda and Mephisto Polgar 5hz. Absolutely love those vintage chess computers! Especially Mephisto engines with wooden boards.
The Centaur is for simplicity with minimal features - just turn on and play. The King Performance offers a lot more but does require a slight press on the squares to make moves, unlike the Centaur. If you like modern look, no frills, and just enjoyable play - Centaur. If you like the classic look with great features, including future ability to play online with add-ons, then King Performance. A nice plus on the KP is Chess960 is built in.
I chose this one for several reasons: The King Performance is much more customizable, you can play online (provided you buy their ChessLink BT module, too), it looks nicer (IMHO) - and it has several tournament modes. Which the DGT machine doesn't offer (as of now).
The DGT has a better stronger chess program. If you want to play chess the normal person does kor need the other levels which you wont use anyway. The board on the DGT is far better. No need to press on the squares making chess more natrual to play and makes chess more enjoyable
Although there were already strong chess apps nowadays, I was still longing to have this kind of this dedicated chess playing device since my college days as a varsity player... Does this device offer a master strength play?
No battery power and having to press the pieces are both deal breakers for me. I already have a pretty good old radio shack chess computer now which works great. If I get another one, I’m not pressing the pieces.
The lack of battery is a big negative. Need to use mains or the external battery pack. Pressing down pieces, I'm ok with that because that what I use with the old boards of the 80/90's. Knowing that I think overall it is the best non-internet board available. The program is very good. I like the King Competition better, its the same but with a plastic case.
1] Does 'King Performance Chess Computer by Millennium' have an infinite mode? 2] If yes, can I set it on infinite mode and will it keep searching on my turn to move for a few days to a week, or will it just do nothing and shut off after a certain amout of time?

The enter button stopped working after playing 2 games on it. There isn't even a battery which I presume is a cost cutting measure. This thing is built to the lowest cost possible. I sent mine back.
Nice, im looking for a new chess computer. I have (dose not work) Excalibur grand master board. Im looking for one about that caliber? Which computer stand alone board woukd be the best out there?
For the same size product, a DGT Board with DGT Pi is an excellent combination. The DGT Centaur is also a large and even easier to use computer. With Millennium brand, the Exclusive has autosensory pieces and although it is slightly smaller, it has the most functions. Those are the three I recommend. Since you are familiar with auto sensing pieces that the Excalibur has, I don't particularly recommend the King Performance in this video assuming you like that convenience of just placing the pieces on the squares.
I'm so surprised to see comments about his strength and the fact that the King lost games against the Centaur at the strongest levels. Plus, I'm exasperated to see all those people who think it's such a shame to have to push on the pieces to record the moves. First of all, 99% of people can't beat these machines at their hardest levels; it doesn't matter me if the machine has an elo of 1800 or 2500. The most important thing for me is that I can customize and adapt the strength of the machine to my level (casual player) so that I can progress without getting discouraged. And I downloaded the instruction manuals and the King offers me that in many different ways (response time, playing style and even CPU speed). And as far as I am concerned, I prefer the look of the King rather than the Centaur. But this is very personal. Some people will find it incredible, but I mainly play on a CXG Super Enterprise from the 90s. OMG! I have to press the pieces and believe it or not it has an elo of 1650 (which I will never beat) and I survive !!! Finally, we have to keep in mind the price of this machine which remains an entry level machine for American buyers at 390$ (it will cost me more than 500$ Canadian and it is still a very interesting option).

Hi, this is for a chess player who plays chess often, and prefers a real board instead of screen. As for price, for what it does, this is not unreasonable. I think it's ridiculous that people spend more than that on a game console!
It has level settings that bring the playing strength down to about 850 ELO. A Hiracs.net user has run tests and estimates the the EASY settings from 0 to 7 range in rating strength from 850 to 1950 ELO. Beyond this, there are other ways of adjusting it's playing level even easier.
Thankfully, they're non-magnetic, so you can replace them with a nicer set. Chessbazaar and Royal Chess Mall offer several small sets that fit the 40mm field size nicely. E.g. this set, called "Contemporary Staunton", from Chessbazaar. The pieces are even a bit smaller in height, but with broader bases, thus they offer more stability. Also, they don't have the dreaded "German knights": i.postimg.cc/gch4RVCP/IMG-20191220-112831.jpg i.postimg.cc/k5Dv5KQz/IMG-20191220-112916.jpg

It can play up to 2400 elo. Which means it is capable of beating everyone other than strong Grandmasters.
It really does play very strong - it can beat even the best masters.
It's rated at 2271 Elo,so it's very strong!
Nice review. Don't like the board's "dash" section is too shiny and could be distracting!
Is it possible to pause a game and continue the next days ? Without saving it on a computer ?
Do you need to press down on the chessboard to register moves? If so, are there any chessboards that don't require pressing down?

I understand that that is the plan. It could be early next year but I wouldn’t commit to a time frame yet.
My top priority is I want chess pieces to have a low center of gravity and the base be wide.
Also, they don't have the dreaded "German knights":

Looks terrible. Just play on lichess
Some people like to play on a real chess set not just on a screen. This will allow for interfacing with internet sites.
@MAC. Which is fine for people with no sense of aesthetics, like yourself.
