Stockfish is open source and free. It is not paid for by tax money but a community program.
Yes, the best engine should be open source and available for anyone for free
For these engine games, it'd be nice to know when the opening book stops and the engines are allowed to choose their own moves.
It will quickly devolve into a draw, that's why they program openings into them to introduce some imbalance.

Strongest engine or not, theres no doubt that watching Torch play is a thing of beauty. Hell, engine chess in general is absolutely gorgeous to behold. There is something uniue about every top engine's method of play - Alphazero's aggressive striving for victory, Stockfish's depth and insight in the calm of the storm, Leela's endurance to survive and now Torch's creative and unorthodox play.

My takeaway is that sacking a rook to open a diagonal for both of your bishops is a good move, and there is absolutely no need to fear undeveloping a knight so you can move a pawn to that square. As long as you can calculate 20+ moves accurately

Computer always calculate very far. That means that when Stockfish let his rook get trapped he had already saw Rxc4 5 moves later and the pressure compensation further beyond. He basically had already saw all the game when it started
