@@merzeporgoher yeah but alphazero is better at evaluating positions. Even now Stockfish isn't the best at evaluation, but it's still on top through raw calculation power.

I love how alpha plays. Its plays with so much flare, sacrificing pieces like its nothing, increasing its mobility while imprisoning its opponent aswell as regularly throwing in elegantly savage moves. Imo its the most beautiful play style that has ever existed.
Watch all 200 of those games and come back and tell me it's beautiful lmao. The vast majority of its play is laboriously shuffling pieces for miniscule advantage. Levy just spared us the pain of watching that stuff.
The straight up ridiculous amount of subtleties in it's slow improvements is still really beautiful though it does get admittedly boring when you can't understand any of it.
@@ColdSleepTo be fair, that's how you have to play if you want to beat Stockfish. If we were intelligent enough to grasp its play, maybe the shuffling would be just as beautiful.
I wouldn't say it seems more 'human' but it definitely is more comprehensible, ie we can understand the way it works. But the way Stockfish works is further away from how the human mind works than Alphazero.
@@MrCheerios2011 The way I mean is, for example when alphazero sacrifices pawns stockfish seems to always take them. The way it values material advantage seems more human, we don't see stockfish sacking pawns left and right, just the way most humans don't.
@@forbiddenlies1938 Yes but Stockfish still makes many moves that are not human at all. It's just that Alphazero is able to see the long term positional advantages and therefore evaluates the position differently.
Stockfish is more more human because people taught it to play. It learned from human games and we taught it how to evaluate the situation. AlphaZero learned just by playing against itself.
@Black Swan55 Just because it was beaten doesn’t mean it’s not strong. Plus, I bet it would absolutely obliterate you if you had played a game with it lmao

I got scared even without the description. If stockfish feels like a super smart could guy, alpha zero truly plays like a snake, just lurking and doing things that don't make sense, and when you realize, you're already trapped. That bishop d3 in the third game was so scary, cuz i firstly went "what the fuck? Why" and feel moves later stockfish was already fucked because of the light bishop position.
I mean it's more like "Slow, gruelling, and soul-crushing endgame in which your mobility and then material is completely killed" but that wouldn't be as good of a one-liner
AlphaZero is the start of a new era for chess. Its strength seems godlike, not just tactically which is typical for engines but also positionally - normally a human trait. It is on a completely different level than anything in the history of the game.
Alphazero is unfortunately non open source, and the team behind the AI have stopped doing chess (I believe). The newest stockfish would crush this version of alphazero. This sucks, I'd love to see what AZ could have done if it was trained for longer and focused more on chess.
@@dead_man7 That's because AZ beat Stockfish with an elo difference of about 50. The latest versions of Stockfish are capable of beating Stockfish 8 by a difference of about 150 elo. "In chess, as of 2022, newer engines are generally agreed to have surpassed AlphaZero's playing strength" Moreover, there's one thing people don't quite realize. The point of these matches was not to show that AZ is better than Stockfish. AZ was running on 4000 CPU cores, and Stockfish on your average "weak" CPU. That's an immense advantage for AZ. If both engines were to run on the same hardware, it is predicted that any strong engine would have beaten AZ. The point of these matches was to show that an AI can achieve incredible feats not brute forcing the game. It goes to show how strong AI's potential is, given a lot of effort and hardware are dedicated to it.
@@cantcatchme6749 Another very important element was that AlphaZero does not need to be developed by people who know how to play chess. Stockfish is developed by and with the help of masters and gm of chess with enormous knowledge of chess theory. You can't just take stockfish, tell him the rules of Go or Poker and ask it to play these instead of chess. To develop AlphaZero, there is no need for someone actually good at chess helping. Just tell him "Here are the rules of chess, play yourself and git gud mf!" and it just does.
It looks to me like AlphaZero is using literal military tactics to win these, defeat in detail, anvil and hammer. Pinning down superior enemy forces with a small part of its own forces so it can go around and smash the enemy in some other place. Also restricting opponents movements and opportunities. This is literally how a small modern army would deal with a bigger older army.

Alpha 0 taught me that It is OK to sacrifice random pieces and when they take just switch the side of the board I'm attacking

@@MrCheerios2011 The way I mean is, for example when alphazero sacrifices pawns stockfish seems to always take them. The way it values material advantage seems more human, we don't see stockfish sacking pawns left and right, just the way most humans don't.

AlphaZero is the start of a new era for chess. Its strength seems godlike, not just tactically which is typical for engines but also positionally - normally a human trait. It is on a completely different level than anything in the history of the game.
AlphaZero was* the start. The games are from 2017.
Alphazero is unfortunately non open source, and the team behind the AI have stopped doing chess (I believe). The newest stockfish would crush this version of alphazero. This sucks, I'd love to see what AZ could have done if it was trained for longer and focused more on chess.
@@cantcatchme6749 how do you know that newest stockfish will destroy this AZ?
@@dead_man7
That's because AZ beat Stockfish with an elo difference of about 50. The latest versions of Stockfish are capable of beating Stockfish 8 by a difference of about 150 elo.
"In chess, as of 2022, newer engines are generally agreed to have surpassed AlphaZero's playing strength"
Moreover, there's one thing people don't quite realize.
