I watched about 10 videos from your wife's channel on developing a RUclips channel and Canva, now I am going through your videos. Loads of great tips. I am learning and picking up some of the same equipment. Both of you have excellent videos!
Some people are using C stands with camera adapters to shoot top down, however I like this rig from Glide Gear as you can add lights and mic and monitors anywhere along the bars which is a huge benefit. Thanks for this review, I may get it at some point!

Thanks for sharing this video. I retrofitted a copy stand which allows the camera to move up and down and pretty much in all directions. If I had known about this device I would have bought it back then. Since I do need something like this anyway I am glad I found this video.

Thanks Ryan! It was weird, I just randomly searched “overhead rig” on B&H a while ago and this popped up. I had never heard of it, but it’s awesome. I know a lot of people stick with tripods, but they always become so unbalanced with overhead shots that it adds another layer of frustration to the process.
I have two Moman tabletop tripods with Sirui column tripod extenders. Then with two of the cheaper Ulanzi tripod ball heads on top to attach the horizontal. For a cell phone I use Camvate camera grips to attach to a cell phone mount (with two hot shoes). Otherwise I could rig either an Impact baby triple header, or a horizontally oriented riser (from a Impact back light stand). It costs a bit more than your rig, but I can use the individual parts for a number of other uses too.
Thanks a bunch for this review. I was tired of seeing the diy’d stuff on all the other videos. I plan on a lot of overhead shots and need something permanently rigged up. This is perfect!
I’m glad it helped! This is an awesome rig. They also recently came out with a larger version that mounts onto two light stands. I haven’t used it, but it looks like a good option if you need more space.
I already got a setup for our cooking videos - like a DIY background stand - It is working fine My main concern is everytime we start - I find it hard to level the camera to the ground - like sometimes it is a little off ( not sure which equipment can help me with this )

Awesome. I used to use an extender arm mounted to a wall. But I moved and now my desk isn’t near a wall. This solves the issue I have with a tripod that’s too short. Now to get my lighting right. Any suggestions when filming iPad tutorials? Lighting is so hard with the screen light.
Nice and helpful. thanks. While I know how to use a photo dual light stand based rig, something like this is a bit more compact and dedicated to purpose which is an aid to simplicity.
I had a really tough time maneuvering around my tripod when I used that, so this is much easier. A C-Stand is probably simpler for a wider overhead shot, but the ease of use with this is terrific. In fact, I'm using it later today!

This is really cool. I want to be able to do top down shots for diy electronics builds and a few other random ideas I want to try. It looks it might be hard to keep a rig that size out of frame if I'm also shooting myself from another angle, but it still gives me some ideas. Really almost any camera can work (even a phone), but if you want something a bit better, the Sony ZV-E10 is my go-to reliable/capable/semi-budget recommendation.
A similar but much cheaper option would be a photography backdrop stand. Together with 2- 11 inch small rig clamps. Works like a charm. But I like this also. It seems to be worth the money especially all the mounting holes are a great feature.
That's a great idea. About a year after making this video I started using a C stand for most of my overhead shots since it allows for a wider angle more easily, but I still love this rig for it's simplicity.
@@tombuck Have you ever found it to be vertically a little tight space-wise? Glide Gear says there's 27" inches bar to table, but minus the camera it doesn't leave a lot of room depending what you trying to demo. Wish they'd have gone at least 36". Their OH75 addresses this limitation but then you are out all the great places to connect other gear. Decisions decisions... 🙄

Thank you! GlideGear makes a larger overhead rig that can be mounted to separate light stands. That might be overkill. You could have luck with something like a C-stand that has a boom arm you can mount the camera to. It's self-supporting, so you won't have any issues with table shake.
The great thing about your channel is that when you finally blow up and gain a million subscribers - they will have so much good back catalog to go through. Less than 50K views per episode? Just criminal.

Depending on if you’re using a full frame or crop camera, 24 or 35mm should be wide enough to not get the stand in the shot. I often use a 24-105 so I can also zoom in on smaller details.
Tom, what happens when you wiggle the table? I am a painting artist and would be tapping on a canvas causing the table to wiggle sometimes. Would this setup cause the camera to wiggle also? Would a floor model be better???
It’s pretty sturdy but it can definitely wiggle a bit. Glide gear does make a larger one that uses light stands on the floor, or my other favorite method is to use a c-stand. Then you won’t have to worry at all. Small movements can usually be removed with stabilization in your editing software 👍
Congrats! I use a pretty inexpensive soft box from Fovitec that I found on Amazon along with a small Dracast bicolor light. If you position your lights to the side, you’ll get fewer shadows than if they’re directly above 👍

Hi Tom, Would you be willing to consider making a RUclips Video showing the set up of a Rhode PRO 2, the Yolo Ultra Box and Elgato Stream Deck XL with a desk top stand that can hold 20 pounds or more of gear? There is a camera store in NJ that is like a smaller version of B&H in NY. You should consider making videos to teach editing for people like me who can't draw a straight line with a ruler. I’d love it if it were more portable, but I do like the stability of it! I don’t know of any other tripods with that functionality off the top of my head, but they must be out there.
Way beyond what I need but interesting nonetheless. Would have appreciated a demo showing what sort of things you have been able to do with it. I am particularly interested in showing someone drawing on a sheet of paper and how to set up so that the persons hands and instruments do not obstruct the view of the drawing. Any suggestions?
Pretty much any time there's an overhead shot in one of my videos, it's with this rig 👍 It works great for drawing. If you use a really wide lens, then you'll see the legs, but something like a 35mm or tighter will look perfect.
This is great! I do crafts and need a mostly top down option. Been using a phone bracket and my phone but having some issues like the mount is wiggly as it's floating in air and my phone is not recording even when it says it is (just lost two hours of what was going to be a time lapse video 😑). I also have a very small space I'm working with so can't do a Tripod method at all. So looking at different set up options and camera options. What kind of ball joint attachment works with this? I'm still figuring it all out. Are there ones with an arm so I have a little bit more movement and positioning options?
The rig itself has a standard 1/4 20 mount, so it'll connect to just about anything. You could definitely find an articulating arm for it, like the one I have the light on in this video.
what all does it come with to connect your camera? i have a cannon 70D i want to do over head videos with. and im terrified of this crashing down on my glass desk.
It has a metal piece that mounts vertically and has a 1/4 20 mount in it. It’s more than strong enough for a DSLR (I’ve used a 6D with battery grip many times). You could add a small ball mount if you want, but the way it comes is the easiest way to get a perfectly perpendicular shot. 👍
Not sure why, with my machine tools in the shop, I don't build my own camera gear something like this? Are the mount point 1/4" x 20? Is that what a typical camera mount is on the base of the dslr?
Yep, that’s the size for everything. It’d probably be pretty simple to build your own, especially if you’ve got the tools! I don’t have tools for working with metal, so I briefly thought about making one from wood, but realized it would end up weighing a ton, so this seemed like a simple, reliable alternative.

Funny you ask, it's actually just my handwriting in Procreate on the iPad. But I got tired of having to draw everything every time, so I recently made it into a font AND I'm finishing up a video for tomorrow all about how to make your own font. 😁 Mine isn't available for download, but the process of making your own is pretty simple and it's super cool because it's 100% custom. It's a Pearstone articulating arm. I don't know the exact weight, but I would say 5-7lbs? You might want to look into a SmallRig arm. They're small and super strong (and affordable)!

I would recommend a camera that can record 4K so that it’s easier to crop in on parts of your frame when you need to. The Sony ZV1 is a really great new camera that shoots awesome video in 4K and would work great on an overhead rig 👍
What little lights would you suggest to add onto this rig? Ideally something that doesnt run off of batteries as will be filming 6+ hour videos in one take so dont want the light to change/go off half way. Thanks for the rig video anyway. Been looking for something like this all week!
There are a number of relatively affordable small LED panels on Amazon that will get the job done. Beyond that, something like the Nanlite Pavotube 6C is a great compact choice that can run off of power or battery.

It really depends on the work you’re doing. Almost any lens/camera will work, but if you’re going to be showing tiny details then a longer lens is better while a wider lens is better for bigger objects. 👍
Great video, just one question; assuming you are using your rx100, and mount it above 60cm, what is the area you can capture at most and when you zoom max without loosing the focus?

I use a small bi color dracast light, and then also some kind of soft, diffused light from the side to eliminate shadows. The exact model doesn’t matter, but the more diffused the better.

There are a few too many variable at play for me to say exactly, but in general, a 50mm lens on this rig will be best for smaller, more detailed subjects.
I don’t think it can on its own, it would probably need to be propped up on something. But a lot of that also has to do with how wide of a lens you’re using.
Doesnt the stand get caught in the video if you have a wide lens or do you crop it if shot in 4k? Using a gh5 trying to find a cheap diy stand... not sure how far the width should be from side to side.
It’s 31.5” between supports. Depending on your lens, the stand can get in the video, but I’ve had pretty good luck so far (I mostly use it with gadgets and smaller items and a 35mm lens).

This may help a bit, but depending on your specific setup, it could be more effective to get a ball mount so you can adjust the camera to any angle. 👍

Recording the iPad is tough. I’ve had good luck with using lighting from the side and relying on the screen itself for brightness.

It’s worked well for me, and doesn’t get in the frame unless I’m using a super wide lens.
Do you have a budget camera you would recommend for overhead shots? I don't think I need a fancy camera for overheads. Thanks. Love the video.

I haven’t had that issue. If anything I wish it were wider, but I mainly use it for smaller/detailed subjects.

I recommend Pearstone and Smallrig mounting arms/attachments. They're pretty affordable and easily found on Amazon/B&H.

Congrats! I use a pretty inexpensive soft box from Fovitec that I found on Amazon along with a small Dracast bicolor light.
If you position your lights to the side, you’ll get fewer shadows than if they’re directly above 👍

Great review and fabulous video! I film using my ipad pro. Any ideas of mounting an ipad to the glide gear apparatus? This would be perfect for my crafting videos, but don't know how I could mount the ipad.
Maybe something like this? The iPad could go in this mount and then be connected to the overhead?

There is a camera store in NJ that is like a smaller version of B&H in NY. You should consider making videos to teach editing for people like me who can't draw a straight line with a ruler. I wish that glide gear was more portable! Any other tripods that have the same function as that manfrotto?
I’d love it if it were more portable, but I do like the stability of it! I don’t know of any other tripods with that functionality off the top of my head, but they must be out there.
Way beyond what I need but interesting nonetheless. Would have appreciated a demo showing what sort of things you have been able to do with it. I am particularly interested in showing someone drawing on a sheet of paper and how to set up so that the persons hands and instruments do not obstruct the view of the drawing. Any suggestions?
Pretty much any time there's an overhead shot in one of my videos, it's with this rig 👍
It works great for drawing. If you use a really wide lens, then you'll see the legs, but something like a 35mm or tighter will look perfect.
nice product, but I film with cellphone so I use one of those webcam/mic arms and they are sturdy enough.

This is great! I do crafts and need a mostly top down option. Been using a phone bracket and my phone but having some issues like the mount is wiggly as it's floating in air and my phone is not recording even when it says it is (just lost two hours of what was going to be a time lapse video 😑). I also have a very small space I'm working with so can't do a Tripod method at all. So looking at different set up options and camera options. What kind of ball joint attachment works with this? I'm still figuring it all out. Are there ones with an arm so I have a little bit more movement and positioning options?
The rig itself has a standard 1/4 20 mount, so it'll connect to just about anything. You could definitely find an articulating arm for it, like the one I have the light on in this video.

It has a metal piece that mounts vertically and has a 1/4 20 mount in it. It’s more than strong enough for a DSLR (I’ve used a 6D with battery grip many times). You could add a small ball mount if you want, but the way it comes is the easiest way to get a perfectly perpendicular shot. 👍
Not sure why, with my machine tools in the shop, I don't build my own camera gear something like this? Are the mount point 1/4" x 20? Is that what a typical camera mount is on the base of the dslr?
Yep, that’s the size for everything. It’d probably be pretty simple to build your own, especially if you’ve got the tools! I don’t have tools for working with metal, so I briefly thought about making one from wood, but realized it would end up weighing a ton, so this seemed like a simple, reliable alternative.

Funny you ask, it's actually just my handwriting in Procreate on the iPad. But I got tired of having to draw everything every time, so I recently made it into a font AND I'm finishing up a video for tomorrow all about how to make your own font. 😁
Mine isn't available for download, but the process of making your own is pretty simple and it's super cool because it's 100% custom. Keep an eye out for that video tomorrow.

It's a Pearstone articulating arm. I don't know the exact weight, but I would say 5-7lbs? You might want to look into a SmallRig arm. They're small and super strong (and affordable)!

Hi Tim. Beginner question. I looked for the Manfrotto tripod in your links. It has several separate ones, for body legs etc. If I already have a standard tripod. Do I just buy the head and it works with my tripod?

It’s actually the mount that comes with the overhead rig. There is a small track that lets you move the camera up and down. 👍

I'm desperately trying to put together an overhead setup for creating instructional painting videos, but I am just starting and just learning! What camera do you recommend for something like this? I need fine detail and great color. I'm stumped since I don't know if I need to get a really expensive camera since it's only one angle I'm after, but I don't have the $ to make mistakes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I would recommend a camera that can record 4K so that it’s easier to crop in on parts of your frame when you need to. The Sony ZV1 is a really great new camera that shoots awesome video in 4K and would work great on an overhead rig 👍

What little lights would you suggest to add onto this rig?
Ideally something that doesnt run off of batteries as will be filming 6+ hour videos in one take so dont want the light to change/go off half way.

There are a number of relatively affordable small LED panels on Amazon that will get the job done. Beyond that, something like the Nanlite Pavotube 6C is a great compact choice that can run off of power or battery.

It really depends on the work you’re doing. Almost any lens/camera will work, but if you’re going to be showing tiny details then a longer lens is better while a wider lens is better for bigger objects. 👍

Great video, just one question; assuming you are using your rx100, and mount it above 60cm, what is the area you can capture at most and when you zoom max without loosing the focus?
The RX100 can capture pretty much the entire space between the legs of the rig. 👍

I use a small bi color dracast light, and then also some kind of soft, diffused light from the side to eliminate shadows. The exact model doesn’t matter, but the more diffused the better.

There are a few too many variable at play for me to say exactly, but in general, a 50mm lens on this rig will be best for smaller, more detailed subjects.

It’s the Sony RX100 V, very similar to the ZV-1 and very good for videos.

Can this get tall enough to film a person sitting at a desk, or sitting on the floor doing a task?
I don’t think it can on its own, it would probably need to be propped up on something. But a lot of that also has to do with how wide of a lens you’re using.
Doesnt the stand get caught in the video if you have a wide lens or do you crop it if shot in 4k? Using a gh5 trying to find a cheap diy stand... not sure how far the width should be from side to side.
It’s 31.5” between supports. Depending on your lens, the stand can get in the video, but I’ve had pretty good luck so far (I mostly use it with gadgets and smaller items and a 35mm lens).
