    The only thing to note here (which was touched upon in the video) is that you will need a massive amount of light to compete with the daylight coming through large windows. Here they're using 2x Aperture 300s, which are roughly equivalent to a 1K HMI. That's a lot of light! Alternately you can choose a tighter shot and move your light source in closer to the subject. Just be aware that you won't be able to pull this off with a 20W LED panel.

    It's great to see someone embrace bright, cheery, high key lighting for a change! Many shooters default to dark and moody "cinematic" (ha!) lighting for everything they shoot. That treatment doesn't fly for a lot of commercial and corporate work.
    The 7' umbrealla is a good alternative to a large diffusion frame. I can't fit a 4x4' frame into my car, but I could find room for a large umbrella when collapsed.
    Q: Was the lighting difficult for Michelle to deal with? Overly strong lighting can be really tough on some talent's eyes. She doesn't appear to be squinting, so I guess it was fine for her.

    • @EpicLightMedia
      @EpicLightMedia  4 года назад +8

      Thanks! Yeah it wasn’t too bright for her. I’ve noticed diffused light even if it’s bright usually isn’t a problem. I think it’s important to have the lights already on and running when the subject enters the room. If a light is turned on once they sit down they might comment about the brightness more often

    • @davidp158
      @davidp158 4 года назад +4

      @@EpicLightMedia A trick that can help is to have the talent close their eys and "look" directly into the light. This will allow their pupils to partially adjust to the light. Then, have them redirect their "look" towards the camera (or interviewer) position before opening their eyes. This can help people who have overly sensitive eyes.

    2:34 why do u put the umbrella that far from the lights? does it matter? could u for example bring the lights closer to the umbrella and dim them a little down? or just take the umbrella back close to the lights? or its all the same? thanks

    • @EpicLightMedia
      @EpicLightMedia  4 года назад +1

      Good question. I like my diffusion as close to the subject as I can and the lights as far away as I can. It fills more or the diffusion and makes the light softer when it’s farther away. Also because of the inverse square law with lighting it makes for a more evenly lit subject and scene with lights farther away from the source

    I'm a photography student, and this is better than anything I've seen in a textbook. Showing the "low effort Zoom meeting" baseline indicates what to expect - and to fix - before lighting and each step is clearly explained in context.
    You worked with existing light in ways I would not have tried to produce quality results with less equipment and labor. And as a still photographer working solo, less is always more.
    Incidentally, I can guarantee that umbrella will work with HMIs - a lot of traditional strobe heads had 500w halogen modelling lights and those big 4800Ws flashtubes get pretty toasty.

    I like your sense for detail with regard to the aesthetic bokeh when using different focal lengths.
    What you explain starting at 7:00 is an axial cut (some kind of jump cut called „cut in“ ).
    There are 4 ways to implement those axial cuts:
    1. Crop-In in post
    2. Multiple camera setting like here: ruclips.net/video/UoFTXMtucBU/видео.html (ok, that is not really an axial cut because you leave unavoidable the optical axis)
    3. One cam, same distance, different focal lengths
    4. One cam with one focal length and different distance
    Crop-In (1) in post has „bad“ bokeh and looks steril.
    Multiple camera setting (2) won’t work with Michelle, because she is „spiking“ only one camera.
    Method 3 works for you.
    But what speaks against method 4? You stay with your 50 mm lens and then you shorten or halve the distance to Michelle for the close-up. Ok, you then get also a shallower dof and a more distinctive bokeh, but you could fine tune it with your mentioned ND-method.
    I know, with method 4 you change the perspective while with method 3 you stay in your perspective. But this change in perspective could give you some extra aesthetic touch.

    That was a great tip about the ND filters, and makes so muhh sense now that I have heard it. I think only other film makers would notice though!
