    The only thing to note here (which was touched upon in the video) is that you will need a massive amount of light to compete with the daylight coming through large windows. Here they're using 2x Aperture 300s, which are roughly equivalent to a 1K HMI. That's a lot of light! Alternately you can choose a tighter shot and move your light source in closer to the subject. Just be aware that you won't be able to pull this off with a 20W LED panel.

    It's great to see someone embrace bright, cheery, high key lighting for a change! Many shooters default to dark and moody "cinematic" (ha!) lighting for everything they shoot. That treatment doesn't fly for a lot of commercial and corporate work.
    The 7' umbrealla is a good alternative to a large diffusion frame. I can't fit a 4x4' frame into my car, but I could find room for a large umbrella when collapsed.
    Q: Was the lighting difficult for Michelle to deal with? Overly strong lighting can be really tough on some talent's eyes. She doesn't appear to be squinting, so I guess it was fine for her.

    • @EpicLightMedia
      @EpicLightMedia  4 года назад +8

      Thanks! Yeah it wasn’t too bright for her. I’ve noticed diffused light even if it’s bright usually isn’t a problem. I think it’s important to have the lights already on and running when the subject enters the room. If a light is turned on once they sit down they might comment about the brightness more often

    • @davidp158
      @davidp158 4 года назад +4

      @@EpicLightMedia A trick that can help is to have the talent close their eys and "look" directly into the light. This will allow their pupils to partially adjust to the light. Then, have them redirect their "look" towards the camera (or interviewer) position before opening their eyes. This can help people who have overly sensitive eyes.

    • @EpicLightMedia
      @EpicLightMedia  4 года назад +1

      Good question. I like my diffusion as close to the subject as I can and the lights as far away as I can. It fills more or the diffusion and makes the light softer when it’s farther away. Also because of the inverse square law with lighting it makes for a more evenly lit subject and scene with lights farther away from the source

    I'm a photography student, and this is better than anything I've seen in a textbook. Showing the "low effort Zoom meeting" baseline indicates what to expect - and to fix - before lighting and each step is clearly explained in context.
    You worked with existing light in ways I would not have tried to produce quality results with less equipment and labor. And as a still photographer working solo, less is always more.
    Incidentally, I can guarantee that umbrella will work with HMIs - a lot of traditional strobe heads had 500w halogen modelling lights and those big 4800Ws flashtubes get pretty toasty.

    Nice job on this video. A note on the umbrella. You often have to be careful that the light isn't in front of the camera where if you don't flag flag it, it washes out the blacks or even flares. Plus, if you plan to use it outside, it requires a windless morning.

    Amazing video as always. Love the lighting and the final image.
    Regarding the Canon C200 not being sharp when cropped in, I just want to ask, do you use "Set to Frame Size" or "Scale to Frame Size" while editing 4K footage on a 1080p Timeline?
    For anyone wondering what's the difference, "Scale to Frame Size" resamples/downgrades the footage and when cropped in more than 100%, it loses quality irrespective of the fact it's a 4K footage.
    "Scale to Frame Size" is better to use when we don't intend to crop in and just want the 4K footage to match the size of a 1080p Timeline.

    I am a major fan of Epic Light Media. My set up includes multiple Bmpcc 6ks, Sigma art glass and multiple Aputure light Dome 2s. . . How do you measure for proper exposure with a ( simultaneous wide and tight shot ) multi camera set up? Especially for the really beautiful "Hi-Key" commercial look that you always produce.

      I start with the background exposure of the main camera and then light the subject until the false color is good… but lately I just do it by eye. Then I sent the rest of the cameras to the same exposure. Long lenses get no ND or less ND sometimes and a higher f stop

    Hello, I am a photographer, but I am frequently follow accounts that will help me to improve my lightning. I just discovered your account during the weekend and I have to say it's very cool. Specially when you explain how to light different situations. The information about gear and your sense of humor is very unique. Great job! 👍
    I wanted to activate notifications so I know every time that you upload a video but I can't. Apparently RUclips doesn't allow this feature if the videos are "made for kids"

    Hello! I have a question for you! If I have to film a subject/product that is rather large about 10ft x 10ft in a warehouse without any natural light, what lighting equipment do you recommend? Would the big white umbrella you used in this video work? Thanks, and love your content so much. It is so informative and helpful!
