Broken Easy Out Inside a Broken Bolt - Extraction - Part 2

  • This is the best and one of the only methods on how to properly remove a broken easy out that had been broken by attempting to remove a broken rusty bolt. In the previous video, as an example, Tom Grafton at Jerry's Broken Tap and Drill attempted to remove a very rusty seized bolt using an easy out. The demonstration showed that if a bolt breaks on the way out it generally means it's too seized for an easy out and will almost always break because the easy out is twice as brittle and half the size of the original bolt.
    In this video Tom Grafton illustrates the correct professional method on how to remove a broken bolt or easy out utilizing a metal disintegrating machine (MDM). It's very common for an Easy Out bolt extractor to break when trying to remove a busted, rusty, seized old bolt. Sometimes its best to save your tooling and let the professionals who use the right tooling to extract the broken bolt which will save time and money in the long run.

    Mechanic for 25 years here. I have removed many broken bolts mostly by welding a nut on or if broke flush just weld a small nipple on it and grab it with vise grips. More so than less I wish your business was across the street from me! You are an artist at fixing screw ups or bad situations. I wonder what the cost us for this service.........

    The only reason why I googled screw extractor was that I showed a technician what I learned back in the 90’s how I learned from my aircraft mechanic uncle on how to prepare a Screw Extractor(Easy Out) before removing the worn screw. I also YouTub’ed this because the technician that asked for my help removing the worn screw had 1/4” Bit Type Screw Extractors from Harbor Freight. I was too nervous to use it so I got my Hanson Screw Extractors from my box and removed the screw. What my uncle Fred(TWA Aircraft Mechanic) showed me is to shave the tip of the Screw Extractor on the grinding wheel. Uncle Fred never told me how much to shave but you showed that 5/8” of the Easy Out broke off on the smaller Extractor. I’ll measure my smaller diameter Extractors because I truly believe that I have been removing about 5/8” off the tip. After 30+ years in the Aviation Industry I’m still working nights and learning every day. Thank you and I’ll definitely look into your channel.

    Been in the automotive field for almost 40 years, never used a cheapo-off brand EZ out (either it was Snap-On or MAC) and more often then not, the tooling always broke. Although we just usually push the work off to our in-house machine shop, its nice to see how its done with an actual tool designed to do the job the right way.
    Well done with these videos and wish you guys would put out more. Very informative indeed.

    • @salvadorebertolone
      @salvadorebertolone 5 лет назад +1

      Honestly snap on and mac are not cutter manufacturers. They are still garbage. The problem like was explained here is that you are taking a smaller diameter cutter that while being harder is also more brittle if something is seized you will most likely exceed the torque capacity of the smaller tool and it will shatter.

    Thanks Jerry, That's quite an amazing machine.
    I've found if a bolt even acts like its not going to come out, that heating it very hot several times will finally get it to work loose. If I can get it to move just a little I'll get it going back and forth careful not to put too much on it, trying to increase the movement range little at a time until it finally comes on out.

    Havent had to do many broken bolts, but ive removed plenty of taps and drills, i usually will use a drill bar or guide of sorts if i have to use a hand drill. If im lucky and i have the room ill use a mag base drill, starting center punch and then with a carbide ball end mill to make a small pocket, this will allow my carbide drill to track straight, with a drill bit this is usually enough to be able to remove the remnants, if its a tap, it may take a few step ups of drilling to get it.

    I use an EDM at the machine and fab shop I work at. It is the final solution if I can't get it out with a TIG welder. The EDM takes longer to set up and use , but it works when all else fails. One suggestion that works good for me is on small bolts and taps, drill a piece of 1/4" plexi-glass a hair bigger than the electrode and cut a groove for the coolant to escape. Position it over the broken bolt and clamp it down. It works as a guide to keep the electrode centered up on the broken small bolt or tap. I also use plumbers putty and sheet metal to make dams for directing the flow of coolant. Nice video.

    • @salvadorebertolone
      @salvadorebertolone 5 лет назад

      I was thinking about that, do you just use continuous heat or do you have a cycle frequency with a coolant and a sacrificial electrode?

    Great videos Tom! Thanks. Removing old studs rusted into an exhaust manifold has to be one of the toughest jobs for a mechanic. Weld a nut onto the old stud if you can, then heat it red hot and apply engine oil - not WD40 as most people think. WD40 often works great when applied to cold rusted parts, not so great if heating is needed. The detergent in common engine oils works much better if you give it some time to soak. There will be a LOT of smoke so good ventilation is needed. Keep applying the oil as it burns off and the part starts cooling. Then let it soak when the oil stops burning off.

    • @Changtent
      @Changtent 9 лет назад

      Jim Manson Gently work the stud back and forth loosen-tighten, loosen-tighten if it moves just a few thousandths, and keep adding oil. If you can't get that first few thousandths of movement, then re-heat it red hot and apply the engine oil again.

What are my chances with an easy out? I believe my situation is different ... There should be no ceasing however it may be tight up against the blind hole. I'm not sure..

    If one uses the higher end of extractors No dollar store/wal mart/home improvement cheap $4.00 set of extractors they do not snap as frequent. I just handled a rear differential project with a set of $50.00 extractors removing 3 broken off bolts From drilling to bolts out was 20 minutes. I went into project with a 99% failure rate (every one quoted it) "extractors are crap and break most all of the time". I think I broke 2 drill bits, set my extractor with a hammer then used a 1/2 in drill to back em out all 3 came out. So in closing not so much the mechanic/machinist errors when extractors break it is the cheap metal the extractors are made of. But yes in a few cases rust/seized bolts do need to be machined out.

The only thing I have accomplished is that I have shallowed out what was a decent depth hole from the original drill bit - should have just bought another ez out of correct size....so, what now? should I insert the correct size ez out and fill the bolt with weld. Could that work?

      Electrarc tap burner. Actually a very common machine. They did used to make a remote head you could stick on a drill press but as I remember it did;t have vibration and defiantly had no power feed. , If you have enough work for one it's worth the 5 to 10+grand, but I'll take a Bridgeport any time. The is nothing you can that you can do with a tap burner that you can't get done with the mill , Just the tap burner is a little faster at broken taps, but I'd like to see you use a tap burner to drill a bolt hole circle or cut a gear.

    A stupid question: What is the major advantage to use very expensive metal disintegrator instead an accurate drilling machine? For example if we have a broken M10 x 1.5 bolt, it is quite easy to drill a hole through it with a good drilling machine with 8.2 mm or even 8.3 mm drill bit without harming the threads. Then you can use a small hook and pliers to get out the remaining bolt threads. And finally you clean threads with a tap.

    • @tomgrafton8681

    These ez outs are kind of dangerous and should be avoided at (almost) all cost, they can be good if something broke as you were installing it, especially if there was lubrication involved but bolts that are seized typically dont come out. The unfortunate (because of cost) best solution is to weld, if its seated deep you can use a copper insert tube down to the stuck fastener and then build up the weld from the fastener & up through the tube.

    When using an easy out NEVER forget to lubricate the threads with Liquid Wrench or similar lubricant. Wiggle it slowly on the way out. Without the lubricant, you will break the easy out.

      Better yet never use an easy-out. You have a better chance of hitting the lottery then getting a bolt out with an easy out. - If you are already drilling then go all the way and use right size tap drill and retap the hole. Worst case is you may have to use a Helicoil. ,,,or this birds beloved Timecert. ,,,,If he had a milling machine and knew how to us it if you have damaged threads you can drill and tap it to the next size up and tale a piece of stud rod and locktite it into the hole and then drill and tap it back to the correct size.No need to buy high buck thread inserts if you are more then a second year apprentice machine hand.

    Great videos. Have you ever seen the A-SURE OUT extractor? It can be removed in seconds if it breaks, no EDM or DRILLING. After seeing it, only a fool would use anything else! All materials and labor made in the USA! For over 100 years the bolt extractor has changed in many ways, however the failure of a bolt extractor seems to have been carelessly overlooked leaving all users the possibility of catastrophic failure. Help support an American company. Thank you.
