    This review is the reason why I love Johnny and why I'm subscribed to him. He understands a good game when he sees one, and when he disagrees with something, he actually takes time to express why without any real bullshit. Here, he did explain that the game was really big, and might be for those with great patience, which is something i do agree on. Still, Ocarina of Time is my favorite Zelda game of all time, and Johnny can pretty much see why, even if he doesn't agree with others calling it the best Zelda ever. Kudos Johnny, I look forward to your next Zelda marathon!

      Virgil O'Reily Looking back, though I still enjoy this review because of Johnny's honesty and how he still respects everyone else's opinions of the game, there are a few things I don't agree with. One is Link himself. He mentions that he couldn't relate to him at all, but I don't think that was the purpose in the first place, but rather that we can place ourselves as Link because he's the silent protagonist. Isn't that the purpose of a silent protagonist? The second is the music. While most of the dungeons themes are atmospheric, the rest of the music is pretty enjoyable, like Kokiri Forest and Saria's Song. Finally, his critique on the item's supposed limited use come off as more nitpicky. Eh, but still, I enjoy this review overall.

    • @KidSnivy69
      @KidSnivy69 10 лет назад +6

      ***** actually just because you a silent protagonist doesn't mean you can't relate to them. Just look at the wind waker that Link doesn't talk, but through his reactions and facial expressions you can tell what he is feeling and easily relate.

    I feel like the gaming community keeps Ocarina of Time on its pedestal, not due to merit or out of the game holding up well when compared to current adventure games but, as a gesture of respect.
    Even though better games will continue to be made, none have yet been as influential to game design or the industry as a whole as OoT has been. Even though I think it has inspired a few negative tropes in games, you can't deny its influence.

    There's no disputing Ocarina's influential status and how amazing it felt to get into a 3D Hyrule but I think Majora's Mask is a far, far superior game. Very few, if any, games have used time mechanics in such a clever and detailed way. Ocarina, in comparison, is very...vanilla.

      Not only that, but he failed to justify a lot of bullshit LTTP did, things that you would assume Egoraptor would hate (due to his Castlevania 2/Metroidvania opinions). Needing an item, which I have no idea that I need and no idea how to get, to beat a boss is bollocks.

    • @Slashstar314
      @Slashstar314 10 лет назад +95

      MaddBadgerr What really blew me off was his Z-targeting rant. It was needed to adjust to the 3D environment and then he goes on saying it needed to be a top-down view like LTTP and I was thinking, "You mean like 2D?"
      The Z-targeting was masterful for the 3D environment so you can move the camera directly onto the enemy and you couldn't ask for anything more than that when adjusting for 3D. If it went like LTTP, you couldn't move Link side to side in facing the enemy and it wouldn't have worked well with the added dimension.

    • @MaddBadgerr
      @MaddBadgerr 10 лет назад +53

      'There's normal view, then there's ATTACK MODE! and this alters how you view and interact with the game!'
      Well, yes Arin, and this is bad because...........?
      *silence for two years*
      Besides, just because you can see everything or almost everything at once in most rooms of LTTP, doesn't mean that you're able to focus on everything at once. Unless you're superhuman, and I know Arin's not because of his 06 playthrough (i know that game's shit and hard to predict/control, but it's nowhere near as hard as it seems looking at him and Jon play it), his Shadow TH playthrough (that game is EASY, he looked like he was playing with half his fingers missing), and I've heard he's a bit incompetent at Wind Waker too.
      He's entitled to like/prefer/hate whatever he wants, but if what we saw is his justification, its crap. It also contradicts his preference for knowing what to do and how all the time, because LTTP is terrible in that regard, where OOT isn't.

    8:55 - 9:10 That's my biggest complaint with the story. Why should I, the player, care about what happens when the HERO OF TIME HIMSELF doesn't care what happens?! Seriously. How am I supposed to empathize with this character when he just stares at everything with a blank face?! There are SO many questions critical to Link's character development that the game never bothers to answer! Such as:
    -How does he feel about being the Hero of Time?
    -Why should he care if the Great Deku Tree dies?
    -What will happen if Ingo continues to run the ranch?
    -Why is Ganondorf's rule such a bad thing? The only people he had a huge impact on were the Zoras.
    It never feels like anything's at stake (aside from the Sacred Realm which, again, we don't know why Link cares about) so the emotional impact is fairly minimal.

      The Gorons were being harvested and eaten by Volvagia, the Kokiri Forest was ravaged by monsters, Kakariko Village was haunted, the Marketplace looked like a nuke just hit it, and Ingo had taken over Lon Lon Ranch and abused Malon and the horses all because of Ganondorf. The Zoras were not the only ones hit by Ganondorf's rule. Also, Link has always been kind of character you have to imagine what he is all about. Its not like Link from ALTTP was so deep either-in fact he was probably even flatter.

    Actually, I thought of another way to describe Link being a mute besides calling him a piece of wood. In all honesty, he's more like a puppet. just doing what he's told without question. Hell, he doesn't even know any of the people he rescues, but he does it anyway, even though he has no obligation to do so. See, this is why people like Wind Waker Link more than Ocarina of Time / Majora's Mask Link. Wind Waker Link actually reacts to pretty much everything, and thanks to the games graphics, we can easily see that. Some of his reactions are just hilarious!

      Aye, WW Link had a lot of charm and you definitely felt his emotions at times. The "I'm sorry Grandma, but I have to do this" when he leaves Outset, or the "I can't fucking believe I'm doing this" when he's about to get launched into the prison for the first time.

      Lithium Flower That's what i'm talking about! WW Link shows emotion, which makes him pretty relateable. But OoT Link does not, which makes him seem more like a puppet than an actual person. A good example of OoT Link not reacting like a normal person would is after Ganondorf runs off to catch Zelda, we see the camera zoom in towards his face, but all we see his his default expression.

    I feel kind of bad for the later Zelda games after OoT. When released, they aren't really looked highly upon by fans since, compared to OoT, apparently, it's not as good. Or at least to compared to Majora's Mask, which I think is much better than OoT in every way. But I still feel Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are worthy successor to the N64 predecessors, since they improve on most things that were a detriment to what the N64 couldn't do due to its limitations. Having a more relatible Link character, more unique worlds or characters, dungeon design. Say what you will about Twilight Princess, but at least it did basically everything more definitively than Ocarina of Time in terms of presentation. Like yeah the intro is slow, but it picks up after it ends

    • @TheGlasgowGamer
      @TheGlasgowGamer 8 лет назад +9

      Oracle of Games I am actually the opposite. I feel sorry for Ocarina of Time. Many people accuse it of being overrated, primarily because many fans think of it as an upgraded version of A Link to the Past, it had an empty world, and basic combat. Now while I do agree that Hyrule Field was too big for its own good (with successors like Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess improving upon that foundation, in my opinion), I don't think the other criticisms are that fair. This is the first 3D Zelda game, and even for its time, the enemy designs were all really varied and some enemies like Dark Nuts, Iron Knuckles, and Stalfos really show how difficult the combat can get at times. And in terms of it being like A Link to the Past... I don't think that is a bad thing necessarily, but I do think it is different in several ways. The layout of the dungeons is much more varied than A Link to the Past as genius as those designs were (and still are). The Forest Temple had complex puzzles like the arrow puzzle, showing off how puzzles can really work in 3D. Link's journey as hero is explored a lot more in Ocarina of Time. And while you do get similar items, I think that the Megaton Hammer and elemental Arrows add a lot to that raster of already awesome items. Besides, I think that a lot of the items in A Link to the Past should remain staples like the Bow, Boomerang, and Hookshot.
      Apologies for the length of this message. I just thought I would explain why I feel more sorry for OoT over any other Zelda game (and I actually like TP and MM more than this game).

      blowskiol I can understand that, criticizing it's flaws is a bit unfair to you, being as this is the first 3D Zelda game, but you have to understand that when replaying a very old game, there's always so much you can ignore, growing up, in terms of archaic designs. Age doesn't really matter, the flaws are still there. If more people like Egorapter and Johnny here acknowledged that and understood that this isn't the best Zelda game, then I think the other Zelda titles wouldn't have to be unfairly compared to Ocarina of Time. Minus Skyward Sword, each 3D Zelda from then on went and improved from the formula established in Ocarina of Time, and are thusly better Games

    If anyone's wondering why Link can't swim normally in this game, it's revealed that Hylians have a natural tendency to float. This also holds true in Twilight Princess. However, Link's abilities in Twilight Princess are more improved. In that game, he can use his sword while being weighed down with the Iron Boots and the Zora Armor (which is what it's called in Twilight Princess) during underwater sections. Horseback combat was introduced at the cost of Link losing his invincibility while riding Epona. Twilight Princess also makes Bomb Arrows an actual weapon instead of a glitch. There's also the Hawkeye item that turns the Hero's Bow into a sniper's weapon.

    My favorite thing about Ocarina is how it manages to balance being triumphant and somber. It's about going on a heroic adventure, but it's also about a child being forced to grow up too quickly. Its main story isn't anything spectacular, but the overarching theme of loss of innocence, and how it portrays that theme through gameplay elements, always sticks with me. It's definitely not a perfect game, but it came at the perfect time for me to become one of my favs.

    3 things that make OOC such a great game for me are:
    1. The use of music as a gameplay element, which was thematic, neat and kind of innovative at the time.
    2. The explaination and establishing of core elements of the Zelda mythos, like Link being the rightful wielder of the aspect of courage, Zelda the aspect of wisdom and Ganondorf the aspect of power (I think the villain being the rightful wielder of part of the holy power was a neat and novel idea at the time).
    3. The great dungeon designs. The Forest Temple and the Shadow Temple in particular really made you feel how things have changed from earlier dungeons in the game. The Forest Temple has this great, long set-up and is the first truely challenging dungeon when you play the game for the first time, while the Shadow Temple is the only truely "dark" dungeon and requires the hardest part of the game (defeating the Well dungeon as a kid) to complete.
    Great game overall.

    I think the fandom's love for Ocarina of Time is based on their experience with the franchise, basically situational. If this was your first Zelda game, or first 3D one, and haven't tackled the later ones yet you'll consider this game to be quite the breathtaking experience. If you have tackled the later games before this you won't completely get the hype, which appears to be what's going on with you here.
    Still surprised how Sheik didn't get into any onscreen action in her debut game. I guess the fandom just really likes the idea of Zelda having an alter-ego that's basically a medieval ninja. And Sakurai and the rest of the Smash Bros dev team thought a medieval ninja would be perfect for a fighting game.

  • @batmanofni
    @batmanofni 11 лет назад +11

    I agree with you, Johnny. I love Ocarina of TIme.

    My favorite game in the series has to be Wind Waker. I put so much work into Wind Waker and even traded my Smash Wii U for the HD version.
    I've got to say, it's the best game in my book, (My opinion. Not saying it's the best for everyone. I also recommend the Master Quest version of the Gamecube release. While the Young Link dungeons can take some getting used to, they provide a fun shift of challenge. The Adult Link temples are also significantly easier in some spots - the Water Temple is a cake walk because the way everything is arranged.
    By the way, the main thing that always made the Water Temple difficult is that there is a point where you pick up a certain key. From here, there are two doors you can use said key on. If you use it on the wrong one, the rest of the dungeon is mind-numbingly difficult because it's unnecessarily difficult to find the next key to unlock the other door. However, IF you pick the other door first, the rest of the dungeon is unbelievably easy. For me, it was the difference between four hours of backtracking the "hard" route, and less than one hour bee-lining through the "easy" route.

I mean I find Ocarina of Time overrated but many seem to agree on where it's placed on the list.

    I have to say a large part to what this game meant to people, myself included, was nostalgia. There's playing the game, then there is being immersed and giving something seemingly "good" a meaning which you as a person can buy into and thus create an experience that is great. When I was young I bought into this, I felt I had a stake in the world I was brought into and I'm glad I did because this game is special. Johnny is absolutely the man and he is absolutely fair, just wish he could have experienced this circa 98 when it came out. The story is so much more deep if you're able to visualize it that way. What a great game hands down. Thanks for the videos Johnny we all enjoy them!

    An awesome game for the Nintendo 64. It is such an amazing game. So many good memories with this game. Ocarina Of Time and Pokemon Stadium 1 were the first two games I ever got for Nintendo 64 on Christmas of 1998.
    This game was the first 3-D Zelda game to ever be released. It was a mind-blowing game when it was first released. The music, the gameplay, everything about this game is a pure masterpiece. I love this game with all of my heart.
    I remember when I first played this game when I was 3 years old I automatically fell in love with this game I also remember I was so excited when I first defeated the boss in The Great Deku Tree, I was so excited. I beated this game for the first time last year, when I did I felt like I completed my childhood game.
    This is my favorite game of all time and it will always be my favorite game of all time. :)

      For what it is, it's amazing. No longer is it an exploration game, but more of an RPG. Comparing it to A Link to The Past, you see that it's VERY different. In ALTTP, you're told what to do for a short time. Like typical RPGs, Ocarina takes you on a tour. In Ocarina, you pretty much pass through roadblocks to reach more roadblocks.

    The reason that Ocarina of Time's story set up similarly to A Link to the Past's is because originally the development team wanted to make a 3D version of ALttP. I forget the reason, but they ended up deciding to make a new game.
    Also, the zoras are different because they are now ocean zoras, the old design are river zoras. This is explained in Oracle of Ages.

    Wow. I mean...wow. This game really fucking holds up. In my opinion, this is about as close to perfection as a game can get. I played it for the first time in 2004 when i was 8 and i remember being blown away. I checked out every website that was connected to this game, loving the official artwork, even guides that people were kind enough to load up. Then i lost my gamecube. 12 years later, i bought a gamecube and the promotional disk and...wow. Playing it again, i felt the same joy i felt back when i was 8. Sure, the game felt a little dated to me when i replayed it, and i could pick apart things wrong like the story and such, but no other game (Super Mario 64, Sonic Unleashed, Kingdom Hearts 2 come in kinda close) can blow me away like this one. Even today, games have trouble matching it's excellence. I proudly give this game a 10/10.

      I agree, I played the 3DS version and it really does hold up well. While it may not be the best game ever, it certainly is an *excellent* example of 3D game from the 5th gaming generation that managed to preserve the essence of a traditionally 2D franchise. I mean I still find it so interesting how Nintendo was able to make this game so consistent with the 2D Zelda formula.

    Ganondorf is kind of pointless as Ganon in human form, because he does not act very much more human. Besides the way he acts, he is also some freak of nature.
    Pretty funny about the "desolate marketplace." Though that's probably where the majority of the Hylians lived. The Gorons (captured to be eaten), Zorras (frozen), and Kokirans (town captured by monsters) were also hit hard.
    Sarai was Link's childhood friend / romance (that never was). More than just small talk there.
    N64 is the one to play before they gutted the Fire Temple music for being "too Muslim." It's called artistic license, avante gard.

      A Link To The Past is DEFINITELY a harder game.
      most zelda games now, if you continue to play them, are easily completed. Unless you hit some dumb puzzle like the water temple that you just can't get past. The first 3 Zelda games are legitimately hard. If you don't have the physical dexterity to win, you just... won't. It's weird that games used to be like that. A physical challenge.

    Excellent review, I enjoyed the game as well, but the sluggish movement of Link, the vast desolate land of Hyrule, and the dungeons with constant backtracking really hurt the pace of the game and make it feel like a chore at times. Its the reason why even though I have fond memories of the game, I've only ever completed it once. Though I do want to go back and play it again for old time's sake.
    I also agree that Link to the Past was better. A smaller game world and Pegasuses boots help it to cut a much quicker pace. What a masterpiece!

    I think what bothers me with OoT is just how badly the story's aged. I mean, don't get me wrong, the gameplay and level designs still hold up, but the plot and characters aged like milk. OoT's story is your typical Zelda story, in that it's garbage. Link may as well be a wooden plank (and keep in mind, OoT was released in the same year as Half-Life, which pulled off the silent protagonist concept much better). The other characters are mostly forgettable and/or just there to drive the plot forward. I never got the impression that Hyrule was a real place, or rather, a place that felt alive. Majora's Mask fixes this issue, but in OoT Hyrule feels like too big of a place with too little to do. Like I said, everything else about the game is still good, from the boss fights to the dungeon exploration, but the story, atmosphere, and characters still bother me a tad.

  • @IndohNintendo
    @IndohNintendo 11 лет назад +10

    Think ur being too harsh on the story progression and dialogue. I'd say the player gets a great sense of each characters personality. Ruto's a frighteningly sexually matured brat, Impa's a tough cookie with motherly instinct, Daraunia is a macho goron who cares about nothing more than the well being of his people etc....heck, even a minor characters like Mido turns out to be more than just a lil jelous prick, as Links 7 year absence proves he's deep enough to realize Link was an ok dude and he actually kinda misses him. As for the dialogue, I'll just say this; not every line of text has to be zomg so deep and meaningfully poetic. I love my FF series, but alot of that kind of jrpg dialogue tries way too hard to invoke emotion in the player...alot of it is just plain corny.
