Actually the whole thing of Gun honoring Gerald Robotnik despite the fact that he tried kill them all for revenge was only in the American Version of this game, in the original Japanese version Gun decided to focus on making the world better as an atonement to both Shadow and all the people who died on the Ark
Sometimes, the English versions get the short end of the writing stick. Sonic Forces added a lot of unnecessary edge to the dialogue that's never brought up afterwards, and isn't in the Japanese version.
That's what always confuses me. In the intro video, Shadow is seen loading what I assume is an MP5, and then is seen pumping it like its a shotgun. That already seems strange on its own, but what's even weirder is that you never reload guns in the game since Shadow always drops weapons whenever he runs out ammo.

My foster brother had this game for the longest time and the game always looked cool to me like that maria level I was intrigued by that and the intro but he never let me play it good thing xuz that version was the ps2 version which is the worst one I played it on dolphin this year and IA ctually had a pretty good time with it in the japeniese dub
I honestly feel that way as well, but to be honest I've only played like 2 levels of Shadow, the year it came out, so I'm not in as good a position to say that as Johnny. Then again, I am able to get _some_ enjoyment out of 06, which is -dumber- better than 90% of people.

I like Shadow the Hedgehog (the character), but the whole "amnesia" storyline was the down point of his run in the series. Instead of someone just telling him what happened in the events of Sonic Adventure 2, he ends up embarking on a haphazard quest that left him more confused than ever at the end of Heroes, followed by an entire game that wastes everyone's time by stretching the truth through a pointless morality system, multiple scenarios that completely contradict one another, and sheer amounts of monotony. And seriously. From the aliens, to the Shadow Androids, to the GUN Commander's questionable vendetta, to Shadow being half-alien. The whole story is a massive clusterfuck. I agree with Johnny on this one. Shadow the Hedgehog (the game) didn't need to be a thing. At least, it could've been something, if the developers weren't so goddamn fixated on padding their games out during the Dreamcast era and the beginning of the Modern era. I couldn't care less about the guns, vehicles, and hell, even the swearing (though the way this game handles all this is rather juvenile). But the way the morality system and multiple endings were handled here was one of the most boneheaded decisions (among many) that Sonic Team has ever made with this franchise. If they had restructured the game to where Shadow travels through all 22 levels in one big adventure with one true ending, this game would have more of a reason to exist, and more importantly, it would be a lot more fun and worthwhile. But that isn't the case, unfortunately. Compared to the fundamentally broken Sonic 06, yeah, this game may be more stable and complete, but I swear it can feel just as rushed at certain points.
It also feels pretty forced when you consider that it's revealed that he has amnesia right after revealing that he's still alive after the events of SA2, as if they either couldn't come up with or simply didn't want to make an explanation how he survived the fall down to Earth. I mean, it makes sense they wouldn't because Shadow's death scene was meant to be legitimate before his popularity with the fanbase ruined everything, so he was likely slapped into Heroes with little thought, but that doesn't mean the problems it caused don't matter.
Worst of all is that they ruined Shadow himself. Granted, I'm not a fan of Shadow. Unpopular opinion as it might be. But he did have an legitimate development in Adventure 2 & even Heroes; despite his loss of memory. But in this game, they really screw him over as not only being an idiot & how he had it's multiple branches ending, but he's also becoming the Vegeta of Sonic. An complete douchbag, mean spirit, undeniable & downright sinister.
Well, whaddya know; they're basically doing over Shadow the Hedgehog with an addendum in which Shadow has a rematch against Black Doom in the upcoming Sonic Generations remake. So, who knows; we may get a chance at redemption.
So out of curiosity, who would actually want a Shadow the hedgehog 2?. With no guns, no vehicles, no aliens, no multiple non canon stories, no tryhard edginess and shadow speeding along on the level of Sonic Generations and Colours? I know I do. A shadow side-series would sell well if they just kept to the same general nature as the normal games. In fact, Shadow Unleashed could be a cool concept. Tell Sonic Unleashed's story from Shadows point of view. He was never with Sonic and co for Unleashed. Surely he was off kicking monster ass during all that stuff! What we need is ether a new Chaotix game that uses the team's abilities and has actual "detective" work or Sonic Heros with customization with teams, verses online, and eliminating the major flaws Sonic Heros originally had. At least that's what I want to see from them. Idk if other people would like that.

I know there's gonna be a lot of comments talking about the AVGN, and then in a week the top comment is gonna be "like if you're here because you're a Johnny fan, not an AVGN fan", or something like that, but let's focus on the positive here. Johnny is an amazing reviewer who has put his heart and soul into vids on here, SGB, and BSC for over a decade now, and while his sonic vids might get an and dance of views, he's overall pretty underrated compared to a lot of other big name game reviewers. James could've very easily put in a screenshot of one of his old reviews for that segment, or someone well known like Angry Joe, or someone he's already worked with like Pat the NES Punk (nothing against Joe or Pat on their own, mind you), but he was able to give a shoutout to a reviewer who deserves way more subscribers than the number he's gotten. Now, whether James is fully familiar with Johnny's work or just happened to pick this review because of how popular it was, I can't say, but the important thing is that anybody's review could've filled that screen cap, but Johnny, a guy who has given his all for years, ended up being the guy who's review got shown, and I certainly hope that it ends up helping him in the long run. Here's to all the Johnny fans who don't care how they got here, or how long they've been here, but they're just happy to be along for the ride!
Say, this comment was made a year ago, at the time of this reply. Was this the review that the nerd gave a shout-out to? I'm only familiar with Johnny appearing in the video about the Sonic movie, and his review appearing in the Nerd's Majora's Mask episode.
"Why couldn't Shadow the Hedgehog let us travel through all these levels in one single playthrough?" Actually, you could, Johnny. There's a bonus mode called Expert Mode that you could unlock once you got all 71 A Ranks (good fucking luck with that). It's basically a marathon run where you consecutively play through harder versions of all 23 stages, including the True Ending's stage The Last Way. All you have to do is get to the goal ring at the end of the stage to complete it and move on to the next one, and there's no ranks for these stages, either, so you're free to just ignore a lot of the enemies and such (though getting meter for Chaos Control is still incredibly useful). You could also save and exit at any time and resume where you left off at a later point. However, if you run out of lives at any point, your progress is wiped and you'll have to start all over from the beginning...not that getting lives is a problem thanks to the upgraded Egg Vacuum (I think I had around 50 lives by the end even with my screw-ups). There's also some banter at the beginning of each stage from at least one of the characters you've already met, but most of it is forgettable. Honestly, this is how I wish the main game was (with more fine-tuning, of course), and it's a shame that I had to put myself through such sadistic mission design just to unlock a somewhat more enjoyable experience. Having to revisit stages and do all these bullshit fetch quests and hunts over and over and over again wasn't the way to go, and it really put the final nail in the coffin for this game. I mean, Sonic Generations had a godawful story, but its refined gameplay and high-replay value more than made up for it, and I still play the game even well after 100% completing it. This game had none of that, and I only played this game to 100% completion out of morbid curiosity for what else it had to offer, not because I enjoyed it...well, I *did* enjoy it initially, but the forced monotony of it all quickly drained the joy from me. If the "game" part of the game isn't any good, then what's the point of playing a game?

I was 14 or 15 when I got the game. I loved it. Especially when my sister played the game for me because even at 12 she was better at all games than me. (Still is) We loved it! I realize how stupid it is now, but it was just my sister and my dad with no tv and we wanted an escape. We spent hours upon hours playing it. I eventually had the look up the place the last fake chaos was because it blended into the background. As well as the bomb places in the one level you either had to make them explode or stop them. I shouldn't have done it at school because of how many times the walkthrough I printed out said bomb. That was an embarrassing conversation. We listened to the music for hours. Sometimes turning on the game just to listen, because I barely knew what youtube was. The last story was a huge surprise to us. We were like 'What. Wow!' Awesome ending from the point of games I had seen so far. We loved it and were sad to see it end. I know now it's mostly crappy, but to paraphrase another RUclipsr that I can't remember. "Shadow the Hedgehog is a crappy game. Shadow the Hedgehog is a precious childhood memory." These are my thoughts and thank you for reading them to the end. First RUclips comment! Whoo!
the most ironic part is that if you A rank ALL of the missions (Yes even fucking Lost Impact), you unlock expert mode which basically makes shadow go through all the stages in one run and only have to get to the goal ring XP
Really, this game sounds like interesting ideas put in overdrive to the point of being silly. Shadow doesn't really seem like the happy person that wants to "go fast" all the time, but making him say stupid fancy lines, and focusing explosions, guns and all that stuff to the point of trying to be cool is wasting a fine character. I always envisioned him as kind of a Wolverine-type of personality, but more introverted and less caring. Villianous for quite a lot of times, depending on the situation. To make him do exactly the same as Sonic would be unfitting, and for that reason, I understand the guns. However, I find that they could at least try to make something fitting for a hedgehog with fists bigger than his torso, be it a gun, a sword, or at least some form of attacking besides Sonic's usual attacks. (And we should not forget that light-heartedness is essential to the series, so BALANCE AND SUBLETY, SEGA!!)

Infinite is one of the lamest villains I've ever seen, Tails is made to look like a total bitch, Chaos doesn't even fight Sonic, Silver is there for some unknown reason, most of all the characters just sit around and do nothing, your avatar is wasted potential and Classic Sonic being there makes no sense whatsoever. It's plenty fuckin' incoherent.

If I recall correctly, one of the lead developers of the Sonic 3 movie was actually an animator for the CGI cutscenes in Shadow. Also, Shadow Generations is looking to be Shadow the Hedgehog 2 (or at least the game the original Shadow tried to be).
You forgot one thing about this game. During certain boss battles, Shadow can use Chaos Control for a different effect. If you attack a boss who's affiliated to the Eggman Empire or the Black Arms, while defeating enemies that are also affiliated with said boss, Shadow's Hero Gauge will fill up. And when it's full, Shadow can use Chaos Control to slow down time, giving him an advantage against a boss that's affiliated to the Eggman Empire or the Black Arms because they're bad guys. Just wanted to let you know that.

Actually Johnny, in order to complete the entire game, you have to beat the game 326 times, since the paths and allegiances you choose in specific points in the "story" ends with a specific "scenario" in the library. Scenario 1 requires you to clear all dark missions whereas scenario 326 requires you to clear all hero missions, in between those you have to undergo very specific mission patterns in order to get all the scenarios, thus fully completing the game.
You... "loved" Shadow the Hedgehog? I was a kid when I first played Shadow the Hedgehog but come on, the game was very tiresome at some point. I stopped playing Shadow the Hedgehog altogether when I unlocked everything in it. And to tell you truthfully, like Johnny said, its a boring chore to play, especially if you got everything. There's no point on playing it anymore... its been such a long time since I played it because every time I think about, I get bored. If I want a very good game with multi path endings, Undertale is my game of choice.... NOT something like Shadow the Hedgehog. --__--

I'm willing to believe the idea of the boy from the station joining GUN and becoming its commander- to reform the organization and make sure that what happened to him never happens to anyone else. At the same time, though, his vendetta of revenge could easily cause the same sort of tragedy again, which would be terribly ironic if it happened (and maybe that's what him arresting Sonic in A2 was).

I think what I hated most about this game was that the mooks on either side are always hostile, regardless of which side you pick AND on top of that, your allies scold you for defending yourself from them!!!

When I saw the advert on TV back in 2005, I seriously had no idea what I was seeing, a Sonic game with Guns?! I was 8 at the time so yeah, even then the premise was absurd
I was like 16 or 17 when I played it. I loved it then, but...after watching this, I see flaws in the game I didn't see before. That part about the "Last Story" and how "nothing you do matters" just cut right through me. Because it's fucking true! No matter which path I took, Shadow still saved the day! I wouldn't have given a shit about that if there were only 2-3 paths to take...but there's just so much to fucking do! The ranking system itself hurts my soul! It always has since Sonic Adventure 2! I hate being ranked by performance, it's like fucking school! Oh, Shadow. I still love Shadow, but this game...I just don't know anymore.

Fun fact: This game was an answer to fans asking for a Sonic character with a gun. We sort of had something like it in Sonic Adventure 1 with E-102 Gamma. And since Shadow was a fan favorite character in Sonic Adventure 2, they wanted to give Shadow his own spin-off series. Because Sega/Sonic Team wanted Sonic to cater more to the younger audiences, while Shadow would appeal more to the older audiences, they decided to go with a more "mature" tone such as guns and profanity. Keep in mind, this was 2004-2005, back when games like Halo and Call of Duty were popular. And since a lot of Sonic fans tend to consider this game the one that started Sonic's decline in quality of games (though Sonic 06 was the game that highlighted it), it's obvious a sequel would never see the light of day.
0:50 "Who the hell asked for this?" Um....I did, and i can explain. It was the time when I started growing so into Sonic after adventure 2, that when I saw the trailer, I wanted it SO badly. Yeah, because you know, 9 or 10 year old girls wants a video game with guns and crap. When I finally got it....eh. I finished natural story, but I COULDN'T beat the hero or dark, it was extremely complicated and the dark theme just started to feel to bland to watch, so I grew out. Honestly, I totally regret wanting this game....
In my honest opinion, Shadow should've been an android or a clone or something, he should've died in SA2. It would make more sense to me instead of Eggman telling Shadow,"oh hey Shadow, just so you know, you're the real one, no bullshit, have fun killing the demon alien thing!". Now how Eggman could clone Shadow, maybe he stole the ring Sonic gave to Rouge and used to mak a clone of Shadow, then he attempted to wipe his memory so he could use him as a weapon, as well as making the androids to act as his troops. Point is, it shouldn't have been the original Shadow.
I hate this game too, but I think that when the last story starts up, Shadow already has all the Chaos Emeralds. It doesn't explain how he got them, so I took it to mean that it's up to the individual player to decide how he got there, so the hero/dark thing wasn't too worthless. I dunno, best I could do.
Here's the thing about shadow. I love his design and his story is setup well but the sonic team developers just dont know what to do what him He's supposed to be badass for all ages in honesty but they just keep screwing him over. Johnny was right, the guns arent really a problem(yea they are sorta dumb), if anything i want them back but the vehicles need to go, combat= make it a entirely different type of stage. Make stages for speed and another with slower speed but better combat cause i do want to fight as shadow as well. HE NEEDS A BETTER STORY. ***** Personally I believe the "Dark Age of Sonic" started with Shadow the Hedgehog. But I can probably make an argument it started with SA2 when Shadow was introduced & Sonic Team didn't know what to do with him after. Right off the bat I'll say I don't like Shadow at all. I think his character is unlikeable. But Shadow became popular after SA2 that they had to find a way to bring him back in Sonic Heroes. However, they left it ambiguous to whether or not he was the real Shadow or not. When it got to Shadow the Hedgehog, not only did they make his character completely ridiculous, but the story was ridiculous & contradictory so many things from the past Sonic games to the point where it basically killed the Dreamcast Era & we ended up with Sonic 06 rebooting the story.

A story that started off about a blue hedgehog saving woodland creatures from a fat doctor has no place for a “edgy” backstory like shadow’s. It comes off very cheesy in my opinion. I like shadow as a anti-hero opposite to sonic but lol, he is the “ultimate life form who’s friend was killed in a military raid”. Take a step back and look at how ridiculous this is in a game that’s supposed to be about saving the day from Dr. Eggman. It just seems forced imo. I love shadows design and personality but the backstory sounds like it was ripped straight out of a b-list action movie.

I always thought Shadow was overhyped and glad I'm not the only one. While he's not the worst Sonic character I've seen, I will never understand Shadow's backstory and why he was that way. I'm also not an fan of dark & edgy characters, unless if it's done right. Like Batman or Spawn. But Shadow didn't followed in those categories correctly. He's just another Sonic without an good build up and we have Metal Sonic who was another Sonic, but at least it's understandable since he was created by Robotnik ( I refuse to call him Eggman. Sorry. ). Heck. Even Knuckles was an decent rivalry to Sonic at one point and he was doing his job. 5:33 It’s never stated in the game, but Yuji Naka said in an interview that the moon is still like it was in Adventure 2 with half of it blown away, but you can’t see that half because the moon rotated, hiding it, which isn’t a thing the moon does because it’s tidally locked, but there you go! They probably forgot the moon was blown in half in Adventure 2 when making this game, which is ironic considering how it was a pretty big deal in that game, and Naka made up the reason for it appearing to be whole on the spot when asked.

I hate when people judge the game based on how it fits in with the sonic universe. This was the first sonic related game I ever played, so it was my introduction and I loved it! The premise of choosing your own path, having multiple story lines going into more evil, or less evil. In my opinion, seeing the different paths as a level grid is better than the sort of "changing storylines" that you get in modern games where you have decisions that don't really affect the outcome of the game.
How does it not affect the final outcome when you get a whole 10 unique ending videos??? I'm talking about the "true" ending because that's canon to the larger sonic story. I'm not talking about the 10 different videos you get after the bosses. Those are what I like to see at the end of my decisions. Furthermore, the level grid shows that your decisions have a real effect. Whereas games like mass effect, you can't really "see" how your decisions are making a change.
Richard Robertson The 10 endings you unlock are essentially what-if scenarios. The developers had us believe our choices mattered in that they would have an effect on Shadow's future, but in actuality, they mean absolutely nothing, because there's one true ending, which has Shadow ultimately save the day. If that's the case, then the whole good-and-evil system is entirely pointless.

My ONLY theory that makes this story somewhat make sense to me is the idea that the stages are shadow trying to put his memories back together, with the True Hero path being the canonical one (as it ends right where the Last Story starts) and the other stages are misremembered events, hence why the plot threads are contradictory It's not much but I just finished this game and need SOMETHING to make this clusterfuck make sense

Steve Spud SA2 is for my opinion still a touch too serious, not to mention full of plotholes. Sonic and the blackknight haven't seen of it much so far, but would like to have the chance to play it some day. Unleashed I think its a good example for balance... well yeah, sometimes is a bit too goofy, but it still has this epic factor to it, and I think the over all style fits sonic very well. On the quality I sadly seem to have to agree. I was loocking forward sonic boom, I love the new designs, and I was excited Sonic being finally in a world where he and friends are not the only anthro creatures. But what I heard so far of the game, is really sad. :-(

I still enjoy Colors and Generations for what they are but imo they aren't anything special. I disliked Lost World a lot and I can't even stomach the failure Sonic Boom turned out to be. Its honestly worse than Sonic 06. (Yes I just said that) At least the TV show is good so not all is lost from this spinoff Universe.
bought the game for like $10 recently and played it for the first time with my friend because he wanted to see what the deal with it was and never played it as a kid. trying to do the hero mission in lost impact may have been the most miserable experience I've ever had playing a video game.
I like it when he said at 6:00 (which is literally 6 minutes): "Hello?! This is the same man who programmed the ARK to fall into the Earth as a retaliation for the military killing his granddaughter! I grew up with this game. Played it when I was six. I don't care what anyone says, I loved it. Especially playing local multiplayer all night with my cousin. Good times.
The funny thing is, watching this review now, Shadow Generations (or at least Professor Gerald’s journal) does kind of fill in some of the plot holes from this game. It explains why Gerald even created the Ultimate Life Form, what lead him to getting aid from Black Doom, what events led to the ARK getting raided, and so on. Also, I’m going to assume the GUN Commander doesn’t blame GUN for what happened to Maria because, in his mind, GUN only did what they did because Shadow existed, and if he hadn’t been on the ARK, then the raid wouldn’t have happened and Maria would still be alive. It’s a load of course, as, once again, Professor Gerald’s journal does explain what led to the ARK getting raided (spoilers, it wasn’t Shadow’s fault), but this game shows that when it comes to Shadow, the Commander clearly doesn’t think rationally and thus he probably never fully looked into the raid incident. Sorry, nerdy rant. I’ll go back to enjoying the review.
This game took everything wrong with Sonic Heroes and either didn’t fix it or just made it worse. Floaty and delayed homing attack? Not fixed Slippery Controls and acceleration? Not fixed Didn’t like Team Chaotix’s mission based gameplay? Now it makes up 80% of the game. Don’t like playing the game 4 times in a row to get to the final boss? Now you get to play it 10 times! What a mess.

Sometimes, the English versions get the short end of the writing stick. Sonic Forces added a lot of unnecessary edge to the dialogue that's never brought up afterwards, and isn't in the Japanese version.

I like Shadow the Hedgehog (the character), but the whole "amnesia" storyline was the down point of his run in the series. Instead of someone just telling him what happened in the events of Sonic Adventure 2, he ends up embarking on a haphazard quest that left him more confused than ever at the end of Heroes, followed by an entire game that wastes everyone's time by stretching the truth through a pointless morality system, multiple scenarios that completely contradict one another, and sheer amounts of monotony. And seriously. From the aliens, to the Shadow Androids, to the GUN Commander's questionable vendetta, to Shadow being half-alien. The whole story is a massive clusterfuck.
I agree with Johnny on this one. Shadow the Hedgehog (the game) didn't need to be a thing. At least, it could've been something, if the developers weren't so goddamn fixated on padding their games out during the Dreamcast era and the beginning of the Modern era. I couldn't care less about the guns, vehicles, and hell, even the swearing (though the way this game handles all this is rather juvenile). But the way the morality system and multiple endings were handled here was one of the most boneheaded decisions (among many) that Sonic Team has ever made with this franchise. If they had restructured the game to where Shadow travels through all 22 levels in one big adventure with one true ending, this game would have more of a reason to exist, and more importantly, it would be a lot more fun and worthwhile. But that isn't the case, unfortunately.
Compared to the fundamentally broken Sonic 06, yeah, this game may be more stable and complete, but I swear it can feel just as rushed at certain points.
It also feels pretty forced when you consider that it's revealed that he has amnesia right after revealing that he's still alive after the events of SA2, as if they either couldn't come up with or simply didn't want to make an explanation how he survived the fall down to Earth. I mean, it makes sense they wouldn't because Shadow's death scene was meant to be legitimate before his popularity with the fanbase ruined everything, so he was likely slapped into Heroes with little thought, but that doesn't mean the problems it caused don't matter.
Worst of all is that they ruined Shadow himself. Granted, I'm not a fan of Shadow. Unpopular opinion as it might be. But he did have an legitimate development in Adventure 2 & even Heroes; despite his loss of memory. But in this game, they really screw him over as not only being an idiot & how he had it's multiple branches ending, but he's also becoming the Vegeta of Sonic. An complete douchbag, mean spirit, undeniable & downright sinister.
Well, whaddya know; they're basically doing over Shadow the Hedgehog with an addendum in which Shadow has a rematch against Black Doom in the upcoming Sonic Generations remake. So, who knows; we may get a chance at redemption.

I know there's gonna be a lot of comments talking about the AVGN, and then in a week the top comment is gonna be "like if you're here because you're a Johnny fan, not an AVGN fan", or something like that, but let's focus on the positive here.
Johnny is an amazing reviewer who has put his heart and soul into vids on here, SGB, and BSC for over a decade now, and while his sonic vids might get an and dance of views, he's overall pretty underrated compared to a lot of other big name game reviewers. James could've very easily put in a screenshot of one of his old reviews for that segment, or someone well known like Angry Joe, or someone he's already worked with like Pat the NES Punk (nothing against Joe or Pat on their own, mind you), but he was able to give a shoutout to a reviewer who deserves way more subscribers than the number he's gotten.
Now, whether James is fully familiar with Johnny's work or just happened to pick this review because of how popular it was, I can't say, but the important thing is that anybody's review could've filled that screen cap, but Johnny, a guy who has given his all for years, ended up being the guy who's review got shown, and I certainly hope that it ends up helping him in the long run.
Here's to all the Johnny fans who don't care how they got here, or how long they've been here, but they're just happy to be along for the ride!

Actually, you could, Johnny. There's a bonus mode called Expert Mode that you could unlock once you got all 71 A Ranks (good fucking luck with that). It's basically a marathon run where you consecutively play through harder versions of all 23 stages, including the True Ending's stage The Last Way. All you have to do is get to the goal ring at the end of the stage to complete it and move on to the next one, and there's no ranks for these stages, either, so you're free to just ignore a lot of the enemies and such (though getting meter for Chaos Control is still incredibly useful). You could also save and exit at any time and resume where you left off at a later point. However, if you run out of lives at any point, your progress is wiped and you'll have to start all over from the beginning...not that getting lives is a problem thanks to the upgraded Egg Vacuum (I think I had around 50 lives by the end even with my screw-ups). There's also some banter at the beginning of each stage from at least one of the characters you've already met, but most of it is forgettable.
Honestly, this is how I wish the main game was (with more fine-tuning, of course), and it's a shame that I had to put myself through such sadistic mission design just to unlock a somewhat more enjoyable experience. Having to revisit stages and do all these bullshit fetch quests and hunts over and over and over again wasn't the way to go, and it really put the final nail in the coffin for this game. I mean, Sonic Generations had a godawful story, but its refined gameplay and high-replay value more than made up for it, and I still play the game even well after 100% completing it. This game had none of that, and I only played this game to 100% completion out of morbid curiosity for what else it had to offer, not because I enjoyed it...well, I *did* enjoy it initially, but the forced monotony of it all quickly drained the joy from me. If the "game" part of the game isn't any good, then what's the point of playing a game?

I was 14 or 15 when I got the game. I loved it. Especially when my sister played the game for me because even at 12 she was better at all games than me. (Still is) We loved it! I realize how stupid it is now, but it was just my sister and my dad with no tv and we wanted an escape. We spent hours upon hours playing it.
I eventually had the look up the place the last fake chaos was because it blended into the background. As well as the bomb places in the one level you either had to make them explode or stop them. I shouldn't have done it at school because of how many times the walkthrough I printed out said bomb. That was an embarrassing conversation.
We listened to the music for hours. Sometimes turning on the game just to listen, because I barely knew what youtube was. The last story was a huge surprise to us. We were like 'What. Wow!' Awesome ending from the point of games I had seen so far. We loved it and were sad to see it end.
I know now it's mostly crappy, but to paraphrase another RUclipsr that I can't remember. "Shadow the Hedgehog is a crappy game. Shadow the Hedgehog is a precious childhood memory." These are my thoughts and thank you for reading them to the end.

the most ironic part is that if you A rank ALL of the missions (Yes even fucking Lost Impact), you unlock expert mode which basically makes shadow go through all the stages in one run and only have to get to the goal ring XP

Really, this game sounds like interesting ideas put in overdrive to the point of being silly. Shadow doesn't really seem like the happy person that wants to "go fast" all the time, but making him say stupid fancy lines, and focusing explosions, guns and all that stuff to the point of trying to be cool is wasting a fine character.
I always envisioned him as kind of a Wolverine-type of personality, but more introverted and less caring. Villianous for quite a lot of times, depending on the situation. To make him do exactly the same as Sonic would be unfitting, and for that reason, I understand the guns.
However, I find that they could at least try to make something fitting for a hedgehog with fists bigger than his torso, be it a gun, a sword, or at least some form of attacking besides Sonic's usual attacks. (And we should not forget that light-heartedness is essential to the series, so BALANCE AND SUBLETY, SEGA!!)

Sonic Forces's story was still terrible. Infinite is one of the lamest villains I've ever seen, Tails is made to look like a total bitch, Chaos doesn't even fight Sonic, Silver is there for some unknown reason, most of all the characters just sit around and do nothing, your avatar is wasted potential and Classic Sonic being there makes no sense whatsoever. It's plenty fuckin' incoherent.

The only good part about Sonic Forces was that it made me remember that I actually like this game (Shadow the Hedgehog, not Sonic Forces).
If I recall correctly, one of the lead developers of the Sonic 3 movie was actually an animator for the CGI cutscenes in Shadow.
Also, Shadow Generations is looking to be Shadow the Hedgehog 2 (or at least the game the original Shadow tried to be).
You forgot one thing about this game. During certain boss battles, Shadow can use Chaos Control for a different effect. If you attack a boss who's affiliated to the Eggman Empire or the Black Arms, while defeating enemies that are also affiliated with said boss, Shadow's Hero Gauge will fill up. And when it's full, Shadow can use Chaos Control to slow down time, giving him an advantage against a boss that's affiliated to the Eggman Empire or the Black Arms because they're bad guys. Just wanted to let you know that.

Actually Johnny, in order to complete the entire game, you have to beat the game 326 times, since the paths and allegiances you choose in specific points in the "story" ends with a specific "scenario" in the library. Scenario 1 requires you to clear all dark missions whereas scenario 326 requires you to clear all hero missions, in between those you have to undergo very specific mission patterns in order to get all the scenarios, thus fully completing the game.

I'm willing to believe the idea of the boy from the station joining GUN and becoming its commander- to reform the organization and make sure that what happened to him never happens to anyone else. At the same time, though, his vendetta of revenge could easily cause the same sort of tragedy again, which would be terribly ironic if it happened (and maybe that's what him arresting Sonic in A2 was).

I think what I hated most about this game was that the mooks on either side are always hostile, regardless of which side you pick AND on top of that, your allies scold you for defending yourself from them!!!

No matter which path I took, Shadow still saved the day! I wouldn't have given a shit about that if there were only 2-3 paths to take...but there's just so much to fucking do! The ranking system itself hurts my soul! It always has since Sonic Adventure 2! I hate being ranked by performance, it's like fucking school! Oh, Shadow. I still love Shadow, but this game...I just don't know anymore.

Fun fact: This game was an answer to fans asking for a Sonic character with a gun. We sort of had something like it in Sonic Adventure 1 with E-102 Gamma. And since Shadow was a fan favorite character in Sonic Adventure 2, they wanted to give Shadow his own spin-off series. Because Sega/Sonic Team wanted Sonic to cater more to the younger audiences, while Shadow would appeal more to the older audiences, they decided to go with a more "mature" tone such as guns and profanity. Keep in mind, this was 2004-2005, back when games like Halo and Call of Duty were popular. And since a lot of Sonic fans tend to consider this game the one that started Sonic's decline in quality of games (though Sonic 06 was the game that highlighted it), it's obvious a sequel would never see the light of day.

Um....I did, and i can explain. It was the time when I started growing so into Sonic after adventure 2, that when I saw the trailer, I wanted it SO badly. Yeah, because you know, 9 or 10 year old girls wants a video game with guns and crap. When I finally got it....eh. I finished natural story, but I COULDN'T beat the hero or dark, it was extremely complicated and the dark theme just started to feel to bland to watch, so I grew out.

In my honest opinion, Shadow should've been an android or a clone or something, he should've died in SA2. It would make more sense to me instead of Eggman telling Shadow,"oh hey Shadow, just so you know, you're the real one, no bullshit, have fun killing the demon alien thing!". Now how Eggman could clone Shadow, maybe he stole the ring Sonic gave to Rouge and used to mak a clone of Shadow, then he attempted to wipe his memory so he could use him as a weapon, as well as making the androids to act as his troops. Point is, it shouldn't have been the original Shadow.
I hate this game too, but I think that when the last story starts up, Shadow already has all the Chaos Emeralds. It doesn't explain how he got them, so I took it to mean that it's up to the individual player to decide how he got there, so the hero/dark thing wasn't too worthless. I dunno, best I could do.

***** Personally I believe the "Dark Age of Sonic" started with Shadow the Hedgehog. But I can probably make an argument it started with SA2 when Shadow was introduced & Sonic Team didn't know what to do with him after. Right off the bat I'll say I don't like Shadow at all. I think his character is unlikeable. But Shadow became popular after SA2 that they had to find a way to bring him back in Sonic Heroes. However, they left it ambiguous to whether or not he was the real Shadow or not.
When it got to Shadow the Hedgehog, not only did they make his character completely ridiculous, but the story was ridiculous & contradictory so many things from the past Sonic games to the point where it basically killed the Dreamcast Era & we ended up with Sonic 06 rebooting the story.

A story that started off about a blue hedgehog saving woodland creatures from a fat doctor has no place for a “edgy” backstory like shadow’s. It comes off very cheesy in my opinion. I like shadow as a anti-hero opposite to sonic but lol, he is the “ultimate life form who’s friend was killed in a military raid”. Take a step back and look at how ridiculous this is in a game that’s supposed to be about saving the day from Dr. Eggman. It just seems forced imo. I love shadows design and personality but the backstory sounds like it was ripped straight out of a b-list action movie.

I always thought Shadow was overhyped and glad I'm not the only one. While he's not the worst Sonic character I've seen, I will never understand Shadow's backstory and why he was that way. I'm also not an fan of dark & edgy characters, unless if it's done right. Like Batman or Spawn. But Shadow didn't followed in those categories correctly. He's just another Sonic without an good build up and we have Metal Sonic who was another Sonic, but at least it's understandable since he was created by Robotnik ( I refuse to call him Eggman. Sorry. ). Heck. Even Knuckles was an decent rivalry to Sonic at one point and he was doing his job. While Shadow can have it's spotlight of gentle and whatnot at some point, he can be an real prick to Sonic and friends; even Rouge, and the way he talks on how he's cooler than anyone or wants to do this stuff alone while still behaving like an douchbag or just wonna beat Sonic because he's an dick or how he keeps calling himself " Ultimate Life Form " or whatever attitude he behaves was just ruthless. 5:33 It’s never stated in the game, but Yuji Naka said in an interview that the moon is still like it was in Adventure 2 with half of it blown away, but you can’t see that half because the moon rotated, hiding it, which isn’t a thing the moon does because it’s tidally locked, but there you go! They probably forgot the moon was blown in half in Adventure 2 when making this game, which is ironic considering how it was a pretty big deal in that game, and Naka made up the reason for it appearing to be whole on the spot when asked.

I hate when people judge the game based on how it fits in with the sonic universe. This was the first sonic related game I ever played, so it was my introduction and I loved it! The premise of choosing your own path, having multiple story lines going into more evil, or less evil. In my opinion, seeing the different paths as a level grid is better than the sort of "changing storylines" that you get in modern games where you have decisions that don't really affect the outcome of the game.

How does it not affect the final outcome when you get a whole 10 unique ending videos??? I'm talking about the "true" ending because that's canon to the larger sonic story. I'm not talking about the 10 different videos you get after the bosses. Those are what I like to see at the end of my decisions. Furthermore, the level grid shows that your decisions have a real effect. Whereas games like mass effect, you can't really "see" how your decisions are making a change.
Richard Robertson The 10 endings you unlock are essentially what-if scenarios. The developers had us believe our choices mattered in that they would have an effect on Shadow's future, but in actuality, they mean absolutely nothing, because there's one true ending, which has Shadow ultimately save the day. If that's the case, then the whole good-and-evil system is entirely pointless.
How do you expect 'non-what if' scenarios? You can't have a game where all the endings work in canon.

Same here. If only games today weren't so complicated, especially PC games. Take GTA IV for instance, I cannot for the life of me make it work, and it has no scratches on it or anything, just that fatal error WS10 bullshit! My ONLY theory that makes this story somewhat make sense to me is the idea that the stages are shadow trying to put his memories back together, with the True Hero path being the canonical one (as it ends right where the Last Story starts) and the other stages are misremembered events, hence why the plot threads are contradictory

SA2 is for my opinion still a touch too serious, not to mention full of plotholes. Sonic and the blackknight haven't seen of it much so far, but would like to have the chance to play it some day. Unleashed I think its a good example for balance... well yeah, sometimes is a bit too goofy, but it still has this epic factor to it, and I think the over all style fits sonic very well. On the quality I sadly seem to have to agree. I was loocking forward sonic boom, I love the new designs, and I was excited Sonic being finally in a world where he and friends are not the only anthro creatures. But what I heard so far of the game, is really sad. :-(
toongrowner1 I was looking forward to Sonic Boom too. It was a nice change of pace from the Boost and Lost World formula's that I don't care for too much. I still enjoy Colors and Generations for what they are but imo they aren't anything special. I disliked Lost World a lot and I can't even stomach the failure Sonic Boom turned out to be. Its honestly worse than Sonic 06. (Yes I just said that) At least the TV show is good so not all is lost from this spinoff Universe.

bought the game for like $10 recently and played it for the first time with my friend because he wanted to see what the deal with it was and never played it as a kid. trying to do the hero mission in lost impact may have been the most miserable experience I've ever had playing a video game.
That mission made me trade in the game. I don't care how little I got from the trade, I just wanted that game out of my collection.

It's the same as Heroes imo. Fun, if flawed, game to play casually. Not as much when you try to unlock the last story tho.

I can't believe its been almost 9 years since this video released.
I grew up with this game. Played it when I was six. I don't care what anyone says, I loved it. Especially playing local multiplayer all night with my cousin.

The funny thing is, watching this review now, Shadow Generations (or at least Professor Gerald’s journal) does kind of fill in some of the plot holes from this game. It explains why Gerald even created the Ultimate Life Form, what lead him to getting aid from Black Doom, what events led to the ARK getting raided, and so on. Also, I’m going to assume the GUN Commander doesn’t blame GUN for what happened to Maria because, in his mind, GUN only did what they did because Shadow existed, and if he hadn’t been on the ARK, then the raid wouldn’t have happened and Maria would still be alive. It’s a load of course, as, once again, Professor Gerald’s journal does explain what led to the ARK getting raided (spoilers, it wasn’t Shadow’s fault), but this game shows that when it comes to Shadow, the Commander clearly doesn’t think rationally and thus he probably never fully looked into the raid incident.
Sorry, nerdy rant. I’ll go back to enjoying the review.
This game took everything wrong with Sonic Heroes and either didn’t fix it or just made it worse.
Floaty and delayed homing attack? Not fixed
Slippery Controls and acceleration? Not fixed
Didn’t like Team Chaotix’s mission based gameplay? Now it makes up 80% of the game.
Don’t like playing the game 4 times in a row to get to the final boss? Now you get to play it 10 times!
What a mess.
Better than Adventure 2, the controls were fine.

@@retron99 I didn't look at the video, thought you were referring to Heroes. Shadow has amazing control, the game is the best out of Heroes, Adventure 2 and itself.
