Hey, quick note Johnny. It's not that they didn't want to give you the Swift sail in the gamecube version, they totally wanted to speed up the sailing, It's just that the Gamecube simply could not hold enough memory to sail any faster than we see in the final product. In the Wii U version, since the system was so much more powerful, the entire Great Sea is loaded simultaneously, allowing for the Swift sail. The problem couldn't have even been avoided by making the distance between islands smaller, because then more islands visible simultaneously would mean too much for the gamecube to handle, leading to super short draw distances. Overall, it was the best compromise possible to maintain that feeling of adventure on a wide area while allowing the player to see super far. Inconsequential nowadays, but it's fair to commend Nintendo for finding that compromise.
fun fact: the reason the ocean was so fucking huge was, precisely, because it acted as an interactive loading screen. As you got away from an island, it started de-loading, and the ones you approached started loading. The ocean itself and it's minimal content put very little strain on the hardware. In other words, it was a clever, but tedious, trick to make the very first true open-world game run on a gamecube.
+Gaming and Stuff Grand Theft Auto 3 had loading screens and Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas was a console killer as it put alot of strain on the Playstation 2
Jak& Daxter did that shit in 2001 and it didn't just load ocean and smaller islands it loaded pretty open world-ish areas and dungeons. Keep in mind this was being done on the less powerful PS2 and the game runs better graphics. Wind waker loading is nothing impressive in that retrospect.
Lyseolia Well in defense of BotW I have to say that Links neutral expressions go pretty well with his silent character. I mean that his expressions look like those of a quiet person do most of the time. Though, that doesn't really correspond to Links expressions everywhere else in the game. For example when he's done cooking some food and he can't wait to eat it, it's adorable. he doesn't look like the quiet tiyp in these situations at all.
YES! I can NOT agree with this more. Sun and Moon's main character was probably one of the absolute worst in the whole franchise for that exact reason. Seriously, there could be an intense (well, intense for a Pokemon game at least) scene going on, all the other characters react accordingly, like, they're shocked or horrified.... Meanwhile, the main character just has... basically, this. ◉‿◉ But yeah, hopefully, they'll fix that in the future.
_Data_Drain_ I know.... SPOILERS FOR POKÉMON MOON/SUN (for what little can be a spoiler anyway) SuMo: Well. I'm here in this other dimension. Oh look, that lady fused with an other-dimensional jellyfish. 'Kay. Guzma: Damn, kid. You seen ya parents mirdered in fron' a ya or somethin'? Lillie: Why do I like you again? I'm weak, sure, but how is this not freaking right the hell out?! SuMo: I shall fight it with my Pokémon. Have at you. Lillie: ........... Pokémon-training android.........? Guzma: I may be a gang boss but I'mma see this kid's face in m' nightmares, yo.... SuMo -_- Guzma&Lillie: Bwuh!
Tbh, too much water is a valid criticism. The ocean is blank and boring. Having a large percentage of a game take place there means that a large percentage of the game takes place in a boring environment. Games are meant to entertain, not bore.
@WiiManElite Firstly, different reviewers have different tastes. Some people like the calming waters to explore and others feel it is boring. You're being unreasonable. Imagine people hating you because you disliked something while your co-workers liked it. Secondly, with the ORAS review, The reviewer was abosultly right. At least Windwaker tried to use it to make exploration interesting. But in ORAS' case, the water routes added nothing, had very little interesting content, was boring to go through and reused the same pokemon over and over again.
@@FraserSouris I know I'm late but you're point isn't too explained, some people like the water exploration in Oras and others didn't, it's just an opinion. The oceans are essentially just a different looking cave, and some fans like that, opinions are never a good fact, someone out there probably had fun with Bubsy. The problem with IGN is that they're opinions are treated as the facts when a review is supposed to be informative of the quality, a movie reviewer can personally dislike a character but a good one knows that as long as they're well written, then they're opinion isn't a fact.
@@Apotheosister >"The problem with IGN is that they're opinions are treated as the facts when a review is supposed to be informative of the quality, a movie reviewer can personally dislike a character but a good one knows that as long as they're well written, then they're opinion isn't a fact."< No IGN reviewer has ever stated their review was fact. It's always subjective and always was. Secondly, what makes a character well written? That's always an opinion, not a fact so a film reviewer can't ever say it's a fact.
I remember wanting to give myself a challenge with Wind Waker, so I eventually came up with one... No sword! ...Well, your sword is mandatory, but because there are so many options in this game, you can actually get through a majority of the game without using it (the entirety of the Savage Labyrinth can be completed without pressing that B button even once). Playing on Hero Mode in WWHD and using my sword _only_ when there was no other way to progress (such as against the Forbidden Woods miniboss-- the Deku Leaf knocks it down, but there are no throwable items or enemy weapons to pick up, so you have to use the sword) was actually super fun. It made me love the combat system in this game, too, and the constant frantic nature of needing to pick up enemy weapons mentally primed me for when Breath of the Wild came out!
Oh, and if anyone wants to try this challenge and is wondering how to beat Darknuts-- a horizontal Skull Hammer swing damages their armor, meaning you can break it if you hit them enough. Though this means that the Darknut in TotG requires the sword, but once that armor comes off, you can bomb him, knock the sword out of his hands, and use that instead.
The hardest challenge you'll find with Wind Waker is trying to challenge yourself. I just finished a 3-Heart Run last night and while Puppet Ganon definitely gave me some trouble, everything else is (perhaps unsurprisingly) easy even with only 3 hearts.
Wow, that sounds really interesting!! Thanks for the advice. I might try this challenge out. And it's cool how Wind Waker primed you for BoTW! It'll be interesting to play Wind Waker like BoTW!!
Am I the only one who LOVES the sailing? Especially in the original? The vast open seas, the pure blue ocean, and the FUCKING MUSIC I LOVE THE MUSIC This game was my first, and while it’s not my all time favorite Zelda, I love it for certain reasons, like I do for every other one, and I don’t really have a single favorite Zelda. I only played it in 2015, not too long ago. I just adore this game.
Wind Waker HD is possibly my favorite Zelda, I absolutely love the SNES Zelda, but a perfected Gamecube game made better, more crisp in full HD with a real controller none of that motion control bullshit! LOVE Wind Waker
I really like how the wii u verison fixed the small issue the gamecube one had. At first I was like, "there no reason for a remake" then it came out and I was proven wrong.
What motion control? The original Wind Waker was on the Gamecube, and the Gamecube controller didn't even have motion controls. I know you're talking about the Wii, but really?
I cannot stress that enough. As much as I loved the characters in Sun/Moon (especially Lillie), my least favorite character? My own fucking avatar! I mean, Brendan/May in OR/AS actually does have emotion, such as when a situation is dire, you can see them looking angry, and that's even in the overworld. So why couldn't they do that for the PC in Sun/Moon?
I agree. His audio does sound echo-y, when the camera is pointed at him - if I had to guess, he was forced to record the audio with his camera for some reason instead of his usual microphone, but just for those face shots.
The sailing to me while lengthy, captures the sensation of sailing quite well. Most of the time it's just the waves to keep you company with the occasional island or encounter with allies/enemies. At the start the game encourages you in the direction you should go so the trips don't take too much time. That is until the third one where you arrive at nothing, get redirected to Windfall, get sent to Outset (GRAB GRAMMA'S SOUP), get the pearl, and then put them in place. To this date it's the only 3D Zelda game I've played through more than once, 5 times I believe including the HD one on Hero Mode...not that it's saying much because as said before this game is especially easy.
Same!! Wind Waker was the first console Zelda I ever beat, and was also my first foray into Zelda in general. I got it as a birthday gift from my uncle, who pre-ordered it for me so I own the Gamecube Master Quest edition of OoT. HD was pretty much the driving force behind me getting a Wii U...that, and Monster Hunter. I can say I'm a proud owner of a Zelda edition Wii U B)
WiiManElite You can unlock a way to fast travel. It's just that you can only travel to specific map squares, and if you wanna go to a certain island that you can't directly transport to, you have to warp to the closest spot and sail the rest of the way yourself.
@@hoodedman6579 I mean you're electing to sail versus using a motor to go faster, whether that's a financial decision or a lifestyle decision is anyone's guess Also I tried sailing camp as a kid and wasn't especially fond of it, though that was likely because I was stuck in this small harbor with no good wind to work with. Now if I say...had an instrument to direct wind as I desired? Might be another story...or I can just play Wind Waker and get my fix, yeah we'll go with that one
Kursura74 did you even watch the entire video? Lol it was only like that for the first two minutes because he was talking in front of his camera in an open room. At 3:45 it stops when he switches mics. You probably shouldn't criticize something if you haven't watched the entire thing
You'd think that having a near-drowning experience at age seven would make me hate all forms water, but when it comes to Wind Waker's ocean....I freaking loved sailing. Still do. Sure it can be boring sometimes, but I still adore it.
So, Johnny hates it when games have too much water, huh? Now I'm REALLY excited for his second Pokémon marathon and to see him lose his god damn mind over Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald's use of too much water!
What the Master Sword is: Zelda games: The Blade of Evil's Bane Breath of the Wild: The Sword that seals the darkness Johnny: The Blade that f*(king matters!
A Link to the Past: The Blade of Evil's Bane Ocarina of Time: The Blade That Gets Shit Done A Link Between Worlds: The Blade That Once Again Gets Shit Done Wind Waker: The Blade That F**king Matters Twilight Princess: The Blade That Tips 20% Skyward Sword: The Blade That...Wow...Took a While to Get This Time. Breath of the Wild: The Blade That OH MY GOD ITS TRYING TO KILL ME!!!!
I'm starting to think I may be the only person who had zero problems with the sailing aspect of this game (it might even have been my favourite part of it)...
You're not alone. And even though it's been years since I played it in the Gamecube, I remember never thinking "This is taking too long." The game's great visuals and soundtrack were enough to make sailing enjoyable. Maybe I'm too lenient, but I think people like to focus on the negative too much.
Yeah, dude! Even Tingle's Tri-force map extortion section was more "just more time in this awesome universe" than "f**k you, Tingle! I'm quitting!". Then again I bought the Master Quest Edition since it was my first Zelda game, meaning I only played Ocarina of Time AFTER I completed Wind Waker. Maybe it's a different experience if you'd been waiting all that time for a sequel...
I guess so. My first Zelda was Majora's Mask, but I played it in the Collector's Edition (GCN), so when I got to Wind Waker I was both new to the series and had just finished a Zelda game, so I definitely didn't have to wait for too long or expect much from the next game. And Tingle's quest bothered me on the rupee paywall aspect a little, but yeah, it wasn't that bad. (Funnily enough, I think I'm experiencing this "the new game isn't exactly what I want" disappointment with Super Bomberman R. The cutscenes feel a bit too childish, and the graphics aren't impressive... but I'm so happy the series has returned that these issues are pretty minor. If only I had a Switch :P)
The comments for Johnny's Twilight Princess Review will be a war zone some people consider the best game, some consider it ok,and some consider it the worst as for me, Twilight Princess is my favorite Zelda game. And I won't be mad at John if he says it's bad I respect other people's opinions.
I think the comments section in his Skyward Sword review will be much worst, considering how incredibly polarizing that game is, even more so than Twilight Princess, and the fact that John will most likely give that game a negative review will just add more fuel into the fire, since he said in one of the Brainscratchcomms videos that he was indifferent to Skyward Sword, & said it was a game he would never replay again, unless for a review or a sgb let's play.
Meta Shade I actually haven't played Skyward Sword but I've played Majora's Mask, Phantom Hourglass, Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild. Is Skyward Sword any good?
Leanne Herring Honestly I found Skyward Sword to be a pretty mix bag for me personally. Granted I don't hate the game like other people do, but at the same time, I wouldn't say it's all that great either. The game has WAY too much problems that hindered my enjoyment of the game, such as the baren overworld, motion controls not being responsive at times, the obnoxious backtracking, the amount of unnecessary padding just to make the game longer & the CONSTANT amount of handholding that the game bombards you with thanks to Fi always pointing out the obvious to you every 24/7, the game always giving you a paragraph of what item you got everytime you boot up the game & the game obnoxiously telling you what button you should press during the main quest. Seriously the handholding is so bad in that game that even Aonuma flatout admitted it & had to apologize for it. The only redeeming qualities I can say about the game is that the dungeons are fantastic, some of the bosses can be fun at times, the music is top notch & the characters & the story itself is all right, but the rest of the game just falls flat on its face imo. I honestly can't recommend this game to any Zelda fan unless if they're extremely curious in trying the game out. Honestly I think you're better off to just sticking with other 3D Zelda games instead, especially Breath of the Wild, since that game basically fixed all the problems that I had with Skyward Sword, but that's just me.
still my favorite zelda title in the series and I still think toon link is the best version of link imo loved the little guy in wind waker loved him in smash bros and still play the hell out of him in hyrule warriors
Gotta say, that intro song is just pitch-perfect. It really resonates "Somecallmejohnny" to me. Something really vibrant and eccentric, beating with that kind of funky rhythm that I've found myself associating with you. I can't imagine a more fitting theme song. I'm almost jealous you got such a personified theme song. I wish I had a theme song.
This is my favorite Zelda game! Sure you have a lot of sailing to do, but it never really bothered me honestly. I always had fun filling in the map, going from island to island, enjoying the world and characters that are so likable & feel alive, and just experience the adventures of Link...who is also my favorite Link in the series as well! It may not be the super difficult, but it's a lot of fun and to me...it does that well enough! That and I really like the story, simple as it is. Your actions MADE you a Hero, you weren't just another "incarnation" fated to save the world...your desire to help the people you care for, gave you the drive to push forward and overcome the challenges you face even as untrained and unprepared as you start off! You earned the right to hold the Triforce of courage...and its all because of what YOU did, not because of fate or destiny to "save the world"...but because of your love for your sister and those you care for...and the the lengths your going just to save them! It's simple, but that speaks volumes! :3
Ironic would be you watching this with your icon being of a creature that is harmful to water, which this game has ALOT of. Also the shittier Squid Sist-I mean, WUT.
me personally love this game it's my favorite zelda hell my favorite game I always loved the ocean and pirates ever since I was a kid so I don't have a problem with the ocean though I could see why people don't like it overall wind waker is a great game and I fucking adore it
I just found out that Tee Lopes is from Portugal, the same country I'm from... I'm honestly ecstatic to know that a Portuguese person composed the entire soundtrack to an official Sonic game, one my favorite video game series of all time.
Am I the only one who didn't have a problem with the Triforce hunt in the original Wind Waker? I loved sailing the sea, so I always came across a lot of treasure. Treasure that was not spent because I didn't really have anything to spend it on, so it just sat there. So when I needed the 3000 something rupees, it wasn't really a problem because I already had a lot of rupees saved up, plus all the rupees I came across just hunting for the treasure charts.
It would've been better if they haven't cost so much just to locate the Triforce pieces; which the HD version did fixed. Other than that, I still enjoyed the game.
I just don't like that u have to wait till endgame to get them all. If it would've worked like say Metroid Prime 1 where your goal is to get all 12 Chozo Artifacts to reach the Impact Crater, but u can get 11 of them early through the main game as long u have those upgrade that is required and only one u need at the endgame where that part is at one of the room in the Phazon Mine that requires an Phazon Suit; which isn't far away from the room u faced Omega Pirate boss and get an Phazon Suit, than it would've been less padding.
I've felt this for a while now, but it feels as if though Johnny talks too fast in recent videos. At times I can't really make out what he says, which was all the more noticeable in the Unleashed video with Elliot being in the video.
Johnny has always done that XD There are hints of it in most of his videos, the major exceptions being when he is hammering in important points. Personally I assume it has to do with his... (was it Puerto Rican?) heritage. I had trouble with it when I first started watching, but it didn't take me long to get used to it.
Love the new intro! So refreshing to see a great video, not to say you make bad ones, most youtube videos are so dull cookie cutter now. You, avgn, and a few others are pumping out great content! Please don't stop!
This game does such a great and wonderful job of rewarding your experimentation all of the time. Anyone who says this game is empty is full of fucking crap, or there's too much walking or running or sailing - it's a fantasy world, it's what you're supposed to do is you get around.
Love the intro! And during the Zelda teaser, Ganon's Sword looks like an Armourslayer from Fire Emblem. I also think I laughed harder than I should've at the Picto Box "You can take selfies with friends, family, enemies and Dark wizards"
I actually like this game a lot better than Ocarina of Time. Despite all of it's flaws: the story, characters and atmosphere keep me so much more engaged than the bland heroes journey by the numbers that Ocarina had to offer. And the fact that it's on a console that has not aged horribly helps to.
I love this game. And I never really minded the Triforce quest. I just liked exploring the world and finding stuff as I went along. And except for having to play the Wind's Requiem repeatadly, which is pretty annoying, I liked sailing. I get why people don't like it, but I'm OK with it. I didn't play a lot of the HD version, I didn't know they cut the whole paying Tingle for the Triforce charts. I guess half the Rupees in the game just became kind of useless, unless they added something else to buy.
Personally this is my favorite Zelda game. The beautiful graphics and updated gameplay are so much fun. Also the characters are so charming and I love watching them through the story and side quests. And I actually enjoy the sailing. I love exploring and finding islands and such and whenever I hear that music play I feel so excited to be on this adventure. And that's another thing this games soundtrack is amazing. From outset island to even the battle theme there isn't single track in the game that I don't love to listen to. But I am rambling too much now. That is just my opinion.
I thought the sea was beautiful with some bokoblin outpost or sequence of barrels to keep me engaged throughout my trips between islands until I eventually got tired of it, at which point I could fast travel, but I guess it could get boring sooner if you weren't sucked into the world with the music and gorgeous cell shaded visuals
This is legit my favorite 3D Zelda game. I played this for the first time just this year on the gamecube and at that point my experience with the 3D games was fully completing OoT(which bored me half way through the adult link portion until Ganon's tower) and MM(which I never finished, Great Bay drained me so much to the point it kinda broke the experience for me). But this game emediatly got me hooked because to my utter shock I was not playing as another living piece of wood but was insted given control over an actual human bieng. Secondly the ocean, I understand that some people don't like it, and admitidly there were times where I felt things were too empty, but it's shear vastness and the fact that you never actually explore the ocean in it's entirety if you recall(you get pushed back by the king if you try to go beyond the map), gives the world a greater sense of grandure and mystery of what's beyond the known map, something I don't think Hyrule or Termina utilized very well. Also that final boss fight was AWSOME.
BOII OPENING HYPE. I've been a fan for years and the more I see you grow and progress it brings a tear to my eye. I love you John. My favorite RUclipsr.
Too bad Tetra does a grand total of nothing in the sequel game, Phantom Hourglass, which in my mind is pretty much Wind Waker 0.5. Hey, for all we know, some of the dungeons that were scrapped for Wind Waker was probably put into Phantom Hourglass.
Oh god, don't remind about Phantom Hourglass. If Johnny included that game and Spirit Tracks in it, he would probably be thankful that doesn't have to deal with the slower speed and going through the same dungeon over and over again in WW.
The feeling's mutual. I actually do like Spirit Tracks much more than Phantom Hourglass. And Zelda does much more in that game than in Phantom Hourglass. Too bad she had to die in order to do that though
Oh yea, I like Spirit Tracks as well, but at best it's the "previous game but done right" (in the case of the last game, PH) deal. And there were segments that still annoyed me a whole lot *cough* Pan Flute *cough*. Still though, I had an enjoyable time with it since Zelda actually contributes like you said (though in a pretty ironic fashion), and I like how Link was definitely less of a "chosen hero" deal and more of a "well since you just happened to be at the right place at the right time, you can probably handle it" route, at least from what I can remember. Definitely not one of the best Zelda games, but it has a solid place around the middle.
I know an island that was a console cameo was planned for WW (Called GC Island) but was scrapped. It was implemented in PH as Dee Ess Island (You can probably guess what it is).
My experience with the original "Wind Waker" was a bit shaky. The Wii U remaster was another story. Took me only a fraction of the time that it did to beat the original. Thanks for the review. I'm glad you're gonna use the remastered version in your review of Twilight Princess. Took me only 5 days to beat. Would have been 4 if I hadn't stopped for a particular shenanigan. One that also led me to contributing something on GameFAQs. New copies of "Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD" come with the "Wolf Link" amiibo, which is tied to one of the new things in the game. The original "Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess" had a dual platform release. One on the GameCube. The other on the Wii. I bought the GameCube version with my own money. Had a part-time job at the time. My sister bought me the remastered HD version. I actually heard the GameCube version of the original "Twilight Princess" outsold the Wii version. Not hard to see why. GameCube version kept one key aspect of the series intact. That aspect being Link's left-handed quirk. I can identify with him there. I'm a lefty in terms of swordplay as well. In fact, i can say that he was my teacher.
The Wii version sold way more than the Gamecube version. In fact, the Gamecube version is so rare that it will cost you an arm and a leg to obtain a copy. Wii version, around $30.
I can't believe that I can't put markers in this game. Marking what I need to do, so when I have the required item I could come back to it would have made exploring so much more rewarding.
It's strange. Wind Waker used to be the game that everyone said "don't judge it just 'cause it looks kiddy! It deserves so much more praise!" But in recent years people seem to be looking past that and admitting it's not all that great at all.
It's got good in it, but I can't think of much that's stellar. Most of the dungeons are average. The bosses are nothing special. The side content ranges from average to tedious. The aesthetic is the main thing it's got going for it.
I think the overworld is the best in the series till BOTW. It's open, has lots of stuff to do, is really fun to travel in (IMO) and harkens back to the core of the Zelda series which is exploration. You can find stuff and do minor segments out of order which is very rewarding and fun. I also think is has one of the best stories in the series.
I do like the story. But the overworld comes up short for me, too. I understand this restriction was based on technological limitations, but the Great Seas just doesn't have all the amazing environments to find I wanted to. I get pleasantly surprised by three, maybe four islands. After that's it's all small chunks of land that hide a rupee, or something. But again, I understand they couldn't manage any more on the gamecube, so I wouldn't hold this against them. What I do have an issue with is the openness. Until you beat the Forbidden Forest, you're not allowed to go off the route by far. Not to mention, when you get to the part of the game where you're supposed to find Medli and Makar, the map marks both locations at once, implying you can play them in any order, but for some reason it still restricts you into doing Medli first. It's several hours of open-world blue-balling. Also, I think it's imperative to take Matthewmatosis' advice on leaving the exploration until the Triforce quest, otherwise it's a cycle of sailing for 10 minutes, finding an island, realising you've been there before, and moving on. It would take the Triforce hunt from monotonous to crazy boring.
I admit it has flaws but I still think the overworld is genuinely good. You can tell they put genuine effort into it and it's vastly more interesting than the overworld in Skyward Sword.
You have so many valid points yet it's still my favorite Zelda game for some reason. Sure the ocean isn't full of stuff to do but Hyrule field in Ocarina of time has absolutely nothing. The sense of sailing and discovering new islands is so thrilling. I love the art style and Links emotion. And the story is so good. The world in Wind Waker just feels so alive.
I hated Wind Waker. I get some love it. I respect that. What killed Wind Waker for me was... a lot of things. The dungeons had no memorable music. The partner dungeons felt like a chore. The majority of the islands were copy/paste versions of one another, and once you realized most of the "treasure" hiding out on those faraway islands was just a heart piece... it killed any incentive to go exploring. Sailing, even with the swift sail, was still boring. Combat felt like a brain dead exercise as most enemies could be subdued by rapidly slashing your sword. Even with the QTE Darknuts the combat never get complicated. And the final battle against Ganondorf never felt as epic as the fight with him in OoT. Even the music felt lethargic compared to OoT's final boss music. If you liked Wind Waker, cool. I can't help but wonder if there are people out there who feel as I do toward it.
Right here. The dungeons really killed it for me, it was one area where I think the game could have really redeemed itself, but they were not much to talk about.
I love Wind Waker, but every single one of your points is legitimate to me. I'd like to add that the bow and arrow feels kinda unprecise. But I also think the battle with Ganondorf ends on a very satisfying note, since you stab him through the goddamn skull. Matthewmatosis described this game best to me, which it has a bare amount of content, and it's obviously rushed out with the cut dungeons that got replaced with the triforce hunt.
I enjoy windwaker because of the esthetic and I like the story and world but I could not agree more with your points. There are things I love about windwaker but I find myself uninterested in playing it again because of the lackluster dungeons I feel I have to slog through.
I found this game to be overall underwhelming. Good story, looks great, nice music, I like how Link generally handles, but overall it is my least favorite 3D Zelda because the content (dungeons, enemies, optionals) is just lackluster overall. The minigames just suck outright and the sidequests really don't have much to them. Sailing also gets really old really fast and contrary to what some people would claim, it has little to no depth and is not enjoyable beyond the initial novelty.
Love the new layout, it's awesome, and the song of the intro sounds like if it was one of those 80's talk shows, just amazing. Also, Zelda Marathon! Oh boy I have been waiting for this a looong time!
All-in-all, Wind Waker will always be one of my favorite games in terms of art style, up there with games such as Okami. And I have to say, the new intro… wow. So awesome.
Awesome new intro man can't wait for the next one you've always be my inspiration to start review games and I'd probably say in every video but your just the coolest reviewer ever seasoned work man
The new intro theme is really good, I'll miss the little opening and the games theme playing however. Seeing Johnny appear with his world playing was always badass
That super space jump summer salt 900 degree flip finishing blow on Ganondorf is lowkey the best fucking ending to any Ganondorf fight in the series. (Thanks for the shoutout mang.
The Wind Waker is one of my favourite Zelda games. I never understood the initial hate. I loved seing how things looked different in this one! Familiar things with a new look. I was always like, hey, I wonder how that item or character from OoT would look here. That was part of the fun for me. This game is simply gorgeous and beautifully animated.
I....Actually really like the sailing in the GCN version. In fact, this is probably my 2nd favorite Zelda game to 100% complete, with Majora's Mask being #1. There's something theraputic about being out in the middle of nowhere, scanning the horizon for islands and filling out your map piece by piece. I like using sea charts to find sunken treasures, I'll never forget the first time I accidentally found a giant octorok, I guess I can understand the dislike of sailing but I don't agree with it.
New intro, new you! Really great stuff, man! Edit: Kind wish you would have gone over the music a bit, as I feel it's the best in the series, but love the video all the same!
Wow was not expecting a revamped title card sequence or even an intro! Looks great and sounds great! As for the review itself I feel like you covered the bases and might've inspired a few people to actually try it out.
Hey, quick note Johnny. It's not that they didn't want to give you the Swift sail in the gamecube version, they totally wanted to speed up the sailing, It's just that the Gamecube simply could not hold enough memory to sail any faster than we see in the final product. @@Typhoon_Lex I'm not a fan of any intros in any show but I find myself whistling and humming this over and over again. Great tune.
It's pretty impressive that they we're able to put such an expansive ocean in a Gamecube game developed in 2002.
CannaToker420 With no loading screens too
fun fact: the reason the ocean was so fucking huge was, precisely, because it acted as an interactive loading screen. As you got away from an island, it started de-loading, and the ones you approached started loading. The ocean itself and it's minimal content put very little strain on the hardware.
In other words, it was a clever, but tedious, trick to make the very first true open-world game run on a gamecube.
gta3 and SA were in the ps2, a weaker console
+Gaming and Stuff Grand Theft Auto 3 had loading screens and Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas was a console killer as it put alot of strain on the Playstation 2
Jak& Daxter did that shit in 2001 and it didn't just load ocean and smaller islands it loaded pretty open world-ish areas and dungeons. Keep in mind this was being done on the less powerful PS2 and the game runs better graphics. Wind waker loading is nothing impressive in that retrospect.
"I HATE THE OCEAN!"
Still having nightmares about Ecco the Dolphin I see.
The Pokémon franchise could learn a bit about having the player character emote a little from Wind Waker...
That only goes for the cutscenes though. Everywhere else his expressions are about as good as Wind Waker Link's are.
◉‿◉
But yeah, hopefully, they'll fix that in the future.

Johnny's now qualified to review for IGN
funny enough Johnny is going to review gen 3 so he's going to go back to that "too much water"
Tbh, too much water is a valid criticism. The ocean is blank and boring. Having a large percentage of a game take place there means that a large percentage of the game takes place in a boring environment. Games are meant to entertain, not bore.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - 7.8/10
"Too much water"
Gay ass review , talks too damn fast
@WiiManElite
Firstly, different reviewers have different tastes.
I came to the comments for this comment. Thank you.
@@FraserSouris
I know I'm late but you're point isn't too explained, some people like the water exploration in Oras and others didn't, it's just an opinion.
@@Apotheosister
>"The problem with IGN is that they're opinions are treated as the facts when a review is supposed to be informative of the quality, a movie reviewer can personally dislike a character but a good one knows that as long as they're well written, then they're opinion isn't a fact."<
No IGN reviewer has ever stated their review was fact.
You know, that's pretty fair! But I feel like Wind Waker does at least have a lot of options.
The vast open seas, the pure blue ocean, and the FUCKING MUSIC I LOVE THE MUSIC
This game was my first, and while it’s not my all time favorite Zelda, I love it for certain reasons, like I do for every other one, and I don’t really have a single favorite Zelda. I only played it in 2015, not too long ago. I just adore this game.
Wind Waker HD is possibly my favorite Zelda, I absolutely love the SNES Zelda, but a perfected Gamecube game made better, more crisp in full HD with a real controller none of that motion control bullshit! LOVE Wind Waker
.
But PROTO
I really like how the wii u verison fixed the small issue the gamecube one had. At first I was like, "there no reason for a remake" then it came out and I was proven wrong.
Cherosk but proto
What motion control? The original Wind Waker was on the Gamecube, and the Gamecube controller didn't even have motion controls. I know you're talking about the Wii, but really?
7:30 yeah it really pissed me off how in Pokemon Sun my character despite including branching diolouge never seemed to react to anything!
Kyle Campbell "oh no ultra beasts have been spotted!" Sun: :)
iownalx23 Lilly: If you do this SPOILER Neeby will die!
SPOILER: I don't care!
Sun: :)
So, I'm not the only one who thinks like this? 😲
"one your pokemon has skin cancer."

Does anyone else think Johnny sounds kinda echo-y in this video?
Near the beginning of the review I mean.
somebody has been sleeping for a few years
I agree. His audio does sound echo-y, when the camera is pointed at him - if I had to guess, he was forced to record the audio with his camera for some reason instead of his usual microphone, but just for those face shots.
“This mysterious and elusive fig- Ganandorf.” I fucking died
So, sailing is fucking boring in real life too?
It's just that you can only travel to specific map squares, and if you wanna go to a certain island that you can't directly transport to, you have to warp to the closest spot and sail the rest of the way yourself.
also that great ocean theme. MMM now thats the sound of adventure
@@hoodedman6579 I mean you're electing to sail versus using a motor to go faster, whether that's a financial decision or a lifestyle decision is anyone's guess
Also I tried sailing camp as a kid and wasn't especially fond of it, though that was likely because I was stuck in this small harbor with no good wind to work with. Now if I say...had an instrument to direct wind as I desired? Might be another story...or I can just play Wind Waker and get my fix, yeah we'll go with that one
anyone else wondering why the audio is a little echoy?
thethunderspirit87 Yeah, that's bugging me, too.
Makes it harder to pick up on what he's saying.
Probably because he wasn't using a mic to record certain bits, he was just talking to the camera in an open room.
Same here, glad I'm not the only one. Honestly felt harsh on the ears which was odd. Had to keep pausing. Hopefully he'll tweak that.
It got me too and then it got back to normal when he was going to talk about the plot
Kursura74 did you even watch the entire video? Lol it was only like that for the first two minutes because he was talking in front of his camera in an open room. At 3:45 it stops when he switches mics. You probably shouldn't criticize something if you haven't watched the entire thing
Why does Johnny Neglect to talk about the music in so many reviews?
maybe that reflects the impact of the music and how it wasn't great or bad but simply average
maybe he isnt so music savvy :v
True, he usually only mentions it when he feels its REALLY good.
Citrus Blast No that's not it cause he's happy to point out good music
He talked about music in most of his Sonic reviews iirc
Every time there's a new thumbnail, I think of this as a new season of a TV show. Right now, we're on Season 5.
You'd think that having a near-drowning experience at age seven would make me hate all forms water, but when it comes to Wind Waker's ocean....I freaking loved sailing. Still do. Sure it can be boring sometimes, but I still adore it.
What bugged me about the HD version was, they abandoned the cel shaded look with the lighting and it looks more like a CG animation now.
Larry Bundy Jr because you are a spoiled child.
Larry Bundy Jr I have to disagree, I think it gives it a higher quality cel shade look
There are a few things I don't like about wwhd but could easily live with...except the bloom, why such copious amounts bloom?

So, Johnny hates it when games have too much water, huh?
Now I'm REALLY excited for his second Pokémon marathon and to see him lose his god damn mind over Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald's use of too much water!
It won't be so bad since the water routes in those games aren't really that long anyway.

I love the sailing as well, it's nice and relaxing (for the most part.)
Same here. I was never bothered by it and only discovered years later it was a major complaint.

Somecallmejohnny Team Magma member, confirmed.
Skyward Sword is a good game I like most of the characters and story it just the controls are pretty bad.
Leanne Herring The problem with Skyward Sword is it's a good game in a series full of great games.
still my favorite zelda title in the series and I still think toon link is the best version of link imo loved the little guy in wind waker loved him in smash bros and still play the hell out of him in hyrule warriors

I like the sailing a lot

That's not ironic it's coincidental.

I just found out that Tee Lopes is from Portugal, the same country I'm from... I'm honestly ecstatic to know that a Portuguese person composed the entire soundtrack to an official Sonic game, one my favorite video game series of all time.
Seeing Tee Lope's name on one of my favorite youtuber's videos made me so happy. Glad to see two amazing guys working together.

I don't know looking at you're profile pic. just don't draw Johnny in his underwear ok.
13:26 The game over screen is very dramatic. more often than not, Link staggers in place struggling to stay alive then collapses.
Dat snazzy new intro though!
You can say that again, Hawkguy.
Whaat? I find OoT harder than WW.. And WW is definitely the better game (imo of course).
Love the intro! And during the Zelda teaser, Ganon's Sword looks like an Armourslayer from Fire Emblem.
I also think I laughed harder than I should've at the Picto Box "You can take selfies with friends, family, enemies and Dark wizards"
Having a intro composed by Tee Lopez is quite the luxury. Great stuff !
Wow. That whole intro and visuals looked amazing. Really, and then the music...... oh my....... I'm happy for the existence of the trumpet....
Is it just me or does Johnny's "live-cam" microphone sound a bit echo-y? More so than usual that is.
This is probably my least favorite 3D Zelda
Why's that?
11:28 *Link slips while Johnny Is talking* I AGREE WITH THIS LINK BEING A GREAT INCARNATION
I need to play WW again after BotW I want to have a traditional Zelda experience.
HG Shurtugal Same. I may play Ocarina of Time then Majora's Mask. I love those games. I love Zelda in general.
Oh wow, I completely forgot about the Pan Flute segments. XD
Love the intro Johnny! Nice job getting Tee Lopes to do the music xD
It's strange.
Wind Waker used to be the game that everyone said "don't judge it just 'cause it looks kiddy! It deserves so much more praise!"
But in recent years people seem to be looking past that and admitting it's not all that great at all.
It's a flawed game, but the stuff it does well is amazing and worth praising imo.
People's reaction to wind wakers art style was a huge overreaction. This game aged better than most from that era
AYY NEW JOHNNY ART
That intro was pretty 10/10. You're moving up in the world and I approve of this.

The combat was indeed really easy but it felt really satisfying for me.
Your intro and artist rendition is perfect man! Most top notch from your channel to date!
Love the new layout, it's awesome, and the song of the intro sounds like if it was one of those 80's talk shows, just amazing. Also, Zelda Marathon! Oh boy I have been waiting for this a looong time!
*crosses fingers* Please like Twilight Princess Please like Twilight Princess...
Is nobody here going to talk about the new branding/intro? It's looking very nice.
But SierraSketches' logo is horrifying. :o
7.8/10 ~Too many too much water jokes
All-in-all, Wind Waker will always be one of my favorite games in terms of art style, up there with games such as Okami.
And I have to say, the new intro… wow. So awesome.
Everything about the beginning was great! I'm having a fantastic day especially since it's my birthday today, so thanks :)
7.8/10 Too much water.
why are you talking so fast
Old comment, please ignore
yeah(i agree), he looks pretty much like every secondary antagonist in an eroge game. xD
fishface_8910 yes. Yes you are.
The intro music was kind of silly too. xD
The intro music reminded me a bit of Sonic Mania
Nooowww it all makes sense.
that into is amazing holy shit seeing you evolve over the years was great man and can't wait to see more
The intro and artwork is incredible John. Big congratulations to you and the people you gave shoutouts to.
That intro deserves its own video!
Awesome new intro man can't wait for the next one you've always be my inspiration to start review games and I'd probably say in every video but your just the coolest reviewer ever seasoned work man
Sorry last part is the stupid auto correct but again keep up the great work man
The new intro theme is really good, I'll miss the little opening and the games theme playing however. Seeing Johnny appear with his world playing was always badass
The sailing and tricorce shares were my absolute favorite part! I just loved the adventure and finding these cool new islands. It was the best!
this was actually posted on my 18 birthday good timing john makes my day even better!
I only played the GameCube version, but it's still one of my favorite games.
