Blue + bronze, so classic. Unfortunately just as Subaru figured out how to build a good engine that doesn't blow up they went to the CVT dark side. Imagine if, starting 15 years ago, Subaru leaned more into their rally heritage and made sporty models of their cars (and gave the WRX the attention its been lacking). This car would really wake up with a dual-clutch and some tight suspension. Subaru's 3.6 six and various turbo models have a cult following because it's so easy to get power out of them and they drive decently well. Subaru missed their chance.
Missed their chance at what exactly? Their sales exploded since they switched to CVTs. The average person cares way more about fuel economy than what the transmission feels like, and the fake shifts are convincing enough for most. Get a manual if you want something sporty.

Most people are totally unaware of the mechanical limitations and durability of CVTs. Even Subaru, itself says that the CVT needs no servicing. That’s just insane. It has fluid, it has a transmission filter, it has metallic parts/bands which have contact. It’s a “throwaway” transmission. What’s wrong with a 6-7 speed automatic? I’ll tell you “what’s wrong” with it. It costs a lot of money to develop a good, efficient, reliable one. Maybe a ZF transmission coukd be used. CVTs are not good after 120,000 miles. Period. Full disclosure, I own a 2016 3.6 Legacy with a CVT. I drain and fill it every 50,000 miles. It costs $500 at the dealership, who tell me it’s “unnecessary”. Guess they want to sell me a new car or want me to pay $4000 fir a new CVT after 100,000 miles, ugh.
Only engine that "blows" isn EJ25. Stop spreading same bs all over the place. Also you could have 3.0/3.6R with 5eat in 2006-2014 Legacies/Outbacks. It was the only engine in 2009-2014 to still use classic automatic.
Bought an outback with the 3.6 as the family hauler and it's worked great in that role, but it bugged me the otherwise unique sounding engine is muted most of the time, and even when it's a bit louder after 3.5K revs, it's still too darn quiet. The replacement family hauler we got (an Odyssey with a J35 V6) is actually louder when revs climb, which I find hilarious. I do love the EZ36, it's very smooth and it fits the character of the outback really well. Going from a frenetic manual hot hatch daily driver to this is exactly what I wanted for being stuck in and dealing with city traffic. Now relieved of it's family hauling duties and just being the dad car, I have no intention of tuning it, but am looking for an excuse to give it a slightly less muted exhaust. Those pulls you filmed from the inside of the car where helpful in confirming the idea of what I want.

@@bradyg499 I did it myself about 20 years ago. The hardest part was swapping the rear from an AWD svx since my shell was a fwd variant. Just about everything else bolted right up.
I love my 2013 Legacy 3.6R. The 5th Gen was the last year that the EZ36 came paired to a 5EAT instead of the CVT, and I gotta say even in full automatic mode (as opposed to the "manual" with flappy paddles) the 5EAT really lets the engine get up there if you put your foot down. My only complaint is how quiet they made it with the stock exhaust--it doesn't really sound like anything other than a slight whine until ~4k rpm when it finally starts to growl a bit. I want to get an aftermarket exhaust, although I feel like the Nameless exhausts are a little too trumpet-y, I would much prefer something with more rumble/growl.
The 6 cylinder engine is great, but why would anyone pair that engine with a CVT? A six speed automatic transmission, at least would have been better, IMO.
That would have required a transmission swap, plus you’d have to custom fit it too. Subaru doesn’t do proper auto boxes anymore. (Except the BRZ, but that’s a Toyota transmission)
@@XanMan_05 (there is no simple transmission swap) is more like a running gear trans /rear end swap . awd have to have the same ratio front and back, autos have different ratios...
The newer TR690 CVT is a damn smooth transmission, smoother than any other conventional automatic. With that said, it's not the most engaging obviously, and a 6mt EZ36D would be the perfect car. It was paired with the engine because it's not a performance car, but rather a comfort car
@@Dankcatvacs Oh I know that tranny swaps aren’t easy. I was just leaning more to the fact that swapping in a regular autobox could be difficult because of the lack of proper autos in Subaru’s lineup.

1, the 3.6 was made in the late 2000s. 2, the owner obvously had to put at least 3k in it to get somewhat of a decent power rating. They are not quick at all stock. 3, i own a 2011 3.6, its not fast. A civic could beat it without mods.
I dunno man. I've been itching to line up my 14 3.6R Limited Legacy and out 17 WRX 6MT that's stage 2+ tuned. I'm sure the WRX is quicker as it puts down about 300whp, but the 3.6R pulls and is no slouch. This Legacy doesn't feel like I'm reaming it out to get up to 80 pretty quick, where the FA20 DIT does feel like you're just pushing it hard to do the same thing. But that's the difference between a small displacement turbo vs a large displacement N/A motor.
What are you talking about? My completely stock 2019 Outback 3.6R in S# mode does the 0-100kph sprint in 6.4 seconds. The WRX does it in 6.1 seconds, largely in part due to the weight difference. It's a pretty damn good package out of the box. Using EyeSight Hold mode as a poor-mans Launch Control, it absolutely rips off the line and thanks to not needing to change gears, and beats a lot of manual transmission cars in the process at the Traffic Light GP.
@@manlamaMC I should really refer to it as Adaptive Cruise Mode hold, but more people seem to get it when you refer to EyeSight. Anyway, it's when you enable ACC, are fully stopped and set a cruise speed. Hold mode engages which allows you to get off the brake pedal because the car is holding the brake for you. You can now hover over the throttle pedal and instantly mash it when the light turns green while your opponent has to waste time getting off the brake pedal and then onto the throttle. Thus, a poor man's launch control.
@@jamesg8246 I completely agree. @@trilliamogdlocog4986 not with the tune. You get the 250 at the wheels with the tune.
LOL, a CVT trying to emulate gear shifts. It has the worst of both worlds.
I drive one. The fun is there.
Mine was tuned by a subaru worker also
The airbox has a k&n too.
( 2015 legacy subaru bosal mufflers) wrx resonator and cat was taken off and replaced with wrx short cat. So it all sound a little louder than stock.
what does bfb mean? i just found your channel
BFB means “big friggin bottle”. I test every car I review with the same large water bottle to see if it will fit in the cup holders! Every car review from 2021 on has the test!
@@ShootingCars you should do a wrx my 2017 if your ever in fl
What type of tune was done?
ECU reflash street tune I have this on my 11 legacy 3.6 the older ones like mine have a better transmission & it's Not a CVT.
I don't think torque gets lost in the drivetrain like power does. You might want to check into that. It probably loses something, but not 10+ percent
Send tuner name! I got a 2016
1, the 3.6 was made in the late 2000s.
@@HyRax_Aus I have a 2015 legacy 3.6r, can you elaborate on the eyesight hold mode? I’ve never heard about this before
@@manlamaMC I should really refer to it as Adaptive Cruise Mode hold, but more people seem to get it when you refer to EyeSight.
I just sold my 2005 GT wagon(manual), I had bored the block and decked heads, bigger pistons(putting more low end, and higher compression), still stock turbo location, anyway, full pro tune and made 330whp, 325ftlbs, the car ripped. My wife has a 2017 outback 3.6r. The outback feels like an absolute tank in corners, handling, but man off the line, and 35mph-80mph its pretty damn quick! Honestly impressive for stock I feel.
I love my 2020 3.6 Subaru. It is charming.
I love my 2019. Beast
Would be even better if there wasn’t a cvt in it.
5” exhaust system or muffler cuz that would be retarded on a NA vehicle
Is it AWD ?
AWD is standard on all subarus for many years now, outside of the BRZ.
someone isn't a car guy and it shows :P lol
Too bad these are pretty nose heavy.
Odd sounding flat 6... a lot more like a V6 than my Cayman.
Very different design. Narrow cam angle, lower revving, lower compression, different header design even with the Raptor headers
@@sleeper.simulant7327 Yeah, just surprising it sounds so much like a V6 when Subaru’s flat 4s sound nothing like an inline 4. I’ve driven a stock 3.6R Outback and the induction noise inside the cabin was distinctly more flat 6 sounding than this car from what I remember.
@@Xaluber an inline 4 with an unequal header placed where pulses from cylinder collide with sound just like an older WRX or STi. I’ll post a video link for proof. Header design makes the biggest difference generally.
@@Xaluber ruclips.net/video/W8TpQkUYTCk/видео.html
@@sleeper.simulant7327 I was actually talking about the newer Subarus which all have equal length headers, minus the STI. My BRZ sounded very different from from any inline 4 car I’ve driven.
Any body who thinks that subaru cvt is bad.... their automatic are just as bad. Pieces of clunky cheap junk.
Is it cvt ??
If it cvt while you keep in manual how many speed you have ???
I have a blue 2011 3.6 R and less than 55,000 miles.
