My legacy runs phenomenally great, the only problem I had to fix was getting a new alternator and now a new ball joint after hitting a really bad pothole last February. Did I mention my Legacy is from 1993. Best car manufacturers ever.
I just went out and bought this car (except I got it in black, with no eyesight cameras) and I couldn't be happier! This truly is a very well-rounded car that is extremely comfortable and drives extremely smooth. The Harman-Kardon audio system is really good and I was shocked on how spacious this car is (especially in the back seats)!!! I just wanted to thank you for this wonderful review because it really helped my decision of getting this car. This is a true review, and you make it easy for a car novice like myself to understand everything. Thank you again.
these reviews are actually reviews instead of some bs stuff that people are paid to talk about. genuine, accurate information with good constructive criticism on the car. without all those annoying intros and outros with some random dubstep track like other channels
An update on my 2017 Subaru 2.5i, base model. We did not need all the extra bells and whistles, but we upgraded the interior with a Katzkin leather kit for about $400, 17" aftermarket rims, door panel guards, mud flaps, Homelink mirror, and a set of optional fog lights. Our total upgrades was about $1,200, which put the total cost around $22,000 before taxes. This was a much better option than buying the Premium model for $25,000 that had a lot of options we just don't want or really need, and still don't get a leather interior. Well, we are pleasantly surprised at how well the car runs and drives. The new chain driven CVT is much better than I thought it would be. For all of our normal driving, the acceleration is more than sufficient. In fact at only 3,000rpm, the car accelerates much faster than most normal driving we do. Initial acceleration from a dead stop does have a slight lag. However, it's mid to high acceleration band from say 20-80mph is pretty impressive. Once the CVT is locked up, it will take you from 20mph on a highway on-ramp to 70mph lickety-split. In fact it seems to accelerate onto the highway much faster and feels more stable than the Camry we test drove. The handling feels much better than a Camry, and is more inline with a Mazda 6. It is a very flat and sporty drive, yet the interior noise is very low, like a Camry. Cornering is very good, especially when you hit the accelerator on a corner, you can just feel the rear drive kicking in to push you around a corner vs plowing around a corner in a FWD only car. It is also a deceptively fast car. Because the interior is so quiet, the first time I hit the highway, I accelerated into the left lane, and found myself passing the right lane quite handily. I then realized I was going 85mph, and the car barely felt like it was going 60mph, because it such a smooth and quiet car. Part of that is the 17" rims, instead of the 18" rims on the sport models. I did notice from test driving the 17" rimmed cars do drive quieter and slightly smoother. Overall MPG is around 29-30mpg for us. On the highway alone it easily does 36mpg for those long flat road trips. Also, oil consumption is very low, which is a known issue with boxer engines. After 5,0000 miles, we did lose a little oil, but did not need to add any between oil changes. Looks like about 1/4qt loss at the most. And that is on a brand new engine that is still breaking in. As time has gone on, oil consumption appears to be less, and overall MPG's are slowly going up as the piston rings get seasoned and seat properly. So far, I would say I really recommend this car for anyone who wants an AWD family car, or just an all around good car to drive everyday.
Great review. I've owned one of these for a little over a year, cruised around the web looking at all sorts of related content in that time, and I haven't seen anything that so perfectly sums up the car so well.
People hate on Subaru but i am amazed how well they make them! Yes the boxer engine is a bit outdated and the sti version hasnt got many changes in performance but i really like the way they make the interior in their cars. Looks like a very good car to me
sir prick is a practical man such as myself. i dont need flsahy interiors. a simple functional interior that is easy to clean is all i need. only toyota and subaru makes that
@@borger99 Now if only they could make a decent ABS system. The old stuff was horrid and dangerous. The new stuff feels generations old in speed and ability to manage wheel spin and chassis stability. It's...ok. It's ok right up until you use something far better. I have a Honda Ridgeline, and the ABS system and stability programming makes Subaru's system feel 20 years old. It also made me realize ABS based toque vectoring is not a good way to do torque vectoring. Rear diff left and right e-clutch systems are WAY better. Although...I still like old school mechanical locking diffs.
This is first time I've watched one of your reviews and this I have to say is the most detailed, thorough and well explained I've seen. No wonder you get so many views. Keep up the excellent work!
K Sadek Thanks! Bought a new camera for it. I've also recently purchased a new mic so hopefully sound will start improving with future videos (starting with the Volvo XC60).
100% agree on how the pedals feel. I dreamed about how the pedals feel before I got my license and I was very surprised when those matched my dreams. Literally feels like a dream:)
After viewing numerous video car reviews on the net, I must state that this particular video was the MOST COMPREHENSIVE and EDUCATIONAL review from every vantage point, spanning from a thorough explanation of the suspension components to the detailed functions of the vehicle as it glides in motion!! Quite SUPERB indeed, so I HIGHLY COMMEND you for such excellence! My wife has the 2013 Subaru Tribeca with the same H-6 engine (but with the 5 speed auto trans), so I was fascinated on the attention to the detail devoted to the engine parts. With the Tribeca's rear-wheel bias of its normal torque split of 45% of the power delivery of the front wheels with 55% to the rear wheels, I agree that the throttle is touchy that can somewhat jolt one back into their seat without any wheel spin if the gas pedal is pushed too much from a standing start.
Gentleman in the video, I don't know what your name is and I can't find it. I came here to check out this Subaru Legacy but then I discovered another great thing- the way you make all these videos...... I like you being straight forward, clear and scientifically precise, rich knowledgeable contents, and no gimmick or attitude like some others....... You are brilliant, I must say, and thank you for making those awesome stuff.
Great review - I saw one of these on the road the other day - 3.6R in ice silver metallic - beautiful car and my conclusion is that the pictures of these vehicles don't do it any justice - on my short list
The first time I've seen a car review video that actually addresses the every day drivers concerns. Very well done, rather than just loads of fancy angles and movements. Keep up the good work.
I own a 2011 Subaru Legacy 2.5 Limited. I drive over one hour to and from work each day. I love my car. In bad weather the car is a beast. I have read on here some very negative comments about Subaru and I am really confused. It's going on almost 5 years I have had my car and I couldn't be happier. I have put no money into my car besides the regular maintenance. As far as resale value, my car has almost 80,000 miles on it and it's work almost $ 13,000 which is not bad. I would 100% buy another Subaru. They are great cars.
Thanks!!! I really appreciate your review... I've always loved Subaru Forester but the Subaru Legacy is starting to Grow on Me heavily!!! it has a cool, sporty look and the AWD is a must
This is a must see, particularly if this car is one you might buy. 2015 is the first year of the new 5 year cycle so lots here to offer instruction through ‘16, ‘17, ‘18 and ‘19 model years. Really helpful.
I own this model car and I didn't know you could lock it by touching the front of door handle. No more fishing the fob out of my pocket. The dealership didn't even know that. Cool.
Just bought a 2018 3.6r I came from a wrx so the handling was the first thing I noticed. Alot of body roll. Now I have been riding around for about a month and man I really love the legacy I m gonna tune it up a bit make it a little more snappy but man what a nice ride
Larger front/rear anti-roll bar would greatly improve feel. Same size bars on 2.5l (brakes too) limited trim, Subaru cheaped out and didn't give drivers better parts for a larger, added weight engine
That's the thing I love about Subarus, the brakes on all of them are great. The 98 Outback I had the brake feel was exactly the same. The only thing I don't like is the CVT they did it for efficiency and it seemed to have paid off (32.3mpg in a mid size car with a 6 cylinder is really good), I could live with how Subaru setup this CVT if I left it in manuel mode. But they should offer a 6 speed standard, the Accord has one, and of they don't already offer it an 8 speed automatic.
AWDfreak well it's a good thing I live in Canada then. That's the only thing that would have forced me to buy the smaller Impreza, but I'd just get the Legacy with the 6 speed standard then. Can you get the 3.6R Legacy/Outback with the 6 speed standard?
Bryan Doherty As with previous generations in North America, the 6-speed manual is only available with the flat-4. So you can only get it with the FB25 from the factory.
My pick, the Subaru legacy eyes closed! The CVT is the best feature I like! It's like a computer controlled manual transmission! Secondly the Eye Sight feature is the next win feature for me!
Oh.. and that “boost” you feel when you upshift is the rotational momentum of the engine and transmission dynamic components being converted into torque as the RPM reduces. Same as dropping a clutch or the F1 kinetic energy recovery system or putting an aircraft prop from fine to feather.
Boxer engine layout is the most reliable engine configuration. There is a reason Subaru is the third most reliable brand and why Porsche keeps using the flat 6.
+Basih You simply can not make a boxer engine "as good as" an in-line 4 with same materials and level of manufacturing precision for the same price - it either has to be more expensive, or you have to compromise on quality. Most Subi's chew through head gaskets
well not engine issues, are they? also, not all of the Subarus have a weak transmission. Also if I am not wrong it was a specific generation that had head gasket issues. like some ford Focus RS models had.
You had the dome light on the whole time! Great review otherwise. I enjoy the technical views more than the opinions other reviewers give. I am eager to see more reviews from you.
Wow. I'm very impressed! You go into a lot of depth showing components and their connections. I actually learnt a lot from this video. Thanks so much for your review! Subscribed for sure!
daprotech Thanks for subscribing! I try my best to get new reviews posted on Sundays (don't always make my mark). That said, every Wednesday will have something, usually an explanation. Cheers!
Maybe I'm a bit biased because I'm an engineer as well, but I absolutely LOVE your reviews. You give insight on the vehicle that no other reviewers do. Keep up the great work!
Great review! I had one of these as a loaner today while my '09 2.5i was in the shop for service. Completely different car! But in a good way. An obvious difference was less road feel, which I actually liked because my Legacy is pretty hard over the bumps. This model absorbed them better, with similarly profiled tires. While I agree with some here that it could use 50 more HP, I also felt it had enough power to be fun to drive and safe for getting on the highway, but didn't have so much as to easily get me in trouble. To your comment about how the car lunges momentarily when accelerating and switching gears: totally agree. Not sure what causes that but I did find it a little bit alarming. Made me feel that there was a temporary loss of control, which I did not like. I would like the onset of torque/HP to feel more linear.
Your video reviews offer unique insight nobody else touches on, maybe because most auto journalists are not engineers. Something to be proud of. That said, something I noticed is lacking from nearly every car review I've read or viewed is the subject of rear seat head room. Being 6'1", you are well qualified to comment on the subject. I am 5'11" and find that when my butt is in the back of the seat my head hits the ceiling in most sedans, even in full size cars. But even some small cars offer good rear-seat headroom. I'd like to hear your thoughts on rear-seat head room for cars you review in the future. Thanks!
This car is celebrating 25 years in America. Although many people were upset with the Legacy not have a manual transmission or turbo engine, it is much roomier than the last two generations. Put Eneos 75W-90 GL-5 100% Synthetic Differential Fluid, and the front and rear Limited-Slip Differentials will operate smoothly and last for at least 100,000 miles.
Outstanding review, it's a pleasure to seat back and listen all the things you cover regarding this or any other vehicle review. You are simply covering everything and anything, especially I find very useful your feeling in the car, since I am of the same hight. Great job, man, just keep on doing the same way with other vehicles.
Just got the exact same car and coming from driving stick shift I want to say that I love the cvt, Idk why people hate it but whatever , yes I noticed that the pedal is very sensitive at my car been 15 with 80k I decided to do a tune up and I noticed that the air filter was thicker than most usual OEM filters, now I got this car for my wife so if it was mine I would have started to mod it but is not mine, I ended up getting an k&n filter and believe or not that $60 dollar plastic filter solved that problem, and yes I can attest to that cause I was like no way so i put the old filter and the pedal was touchy, whent back and put the new filter and it was gone, I didn't even said to wife about the filter and she told me that the pedal touchiness was gone, I will be getting one of this cars too soon enough, good video by the way.
That was an excellent review. It's great to have another engineer's perspective on a car and get down to the nitty gritty rather than other typical reviews that focus on inconsequential criteria like cup holder size etc. I'm a massive Subaru fan though... So I'm a bit biased. Currently driving a gen 5 legacy and this looks to be even better
Well thought out and produced review. You've definitely developed a really nice format/setup that's informative, thoughtful, and just the right amount of information for prospective buyers (or car geeks like myself). If this car came in a manual, I'd be considering it more seriously...I'm just one of those guys that 'needs' a manual. Otherwise, I think this is a really solid platform/sedan.
Yea this makes me really sad. I have a 2008 3.0r in manual and it is a great car and would love to upgrade to a new 3.6r but not having a manual would kill it for me.
Other advantages of the plastic composite intake manifolds are the lack of rough casting imperfections on the inside and their resistance to heat soaking. The best option for road-going cars today, honestly. They are also plenty strong, even for heavy forced induction.
It seems very easy to drive in the states, the road is smooth, wide, not many traffic, and your driving AT car. Try drive in Asia, small road, very busy, people and street vendor in your left right side, and so many motorbikes
12:50 that little bit of torque you get when you shift up, also happens in the AUTO. I have the 2011 and it's kind of strange to shift and feel a jerk back. I'm hoping sometime next year maybe, to install a catback exhaust to let it breath a little easier and have this guy from XRT tuning, reflash the TCM and the ECM. He's managed to get the transmission shifting a lot quicker and smoother, as well as spreading out the torque a little better and increasing torque and HP all throughout the range. There's a lot more to gain from headers back, along with larger injectors from an STI but it's very pricey and for the meantime, a catback works.
Love the review, proper and thorough review with attention to the kinds of details I like to pay attention to! Thanks for uploading, I hope to see more of these in-depth reviews (especially Subaru vehicles).
Thinking about buying one of these used. There's one in my area with 40k miles and it looks very clean. I think I'll go for a test drive tomorrow to see what it's like
I never took these cars seriously until I saw this car at a stop light the other day. I saw this car and thought, "that's a pretty good looking car...wait that's a Subaru?" It took a second glance to realize that. I'm looking for a replacement to my snooty German sedan that rhymes with Howdy, and this might be it.
It jolts you forward when you upshift because the engine is moving faster than the transmission. It's the same reason you jolt forward if you upshift on a manual trans and don't wait for the revs to fall.
Some Subaru owners have been complaining on dealership web sites about a head gasket problem. Has this been corrected on the 2016 models? What about oil consumption. Subaru's have been notorious in the past for 1 qt/1,000 miles in some cases.
More or less corrected. That was a notable problem with the EJ251 back on the '98 Forester and '01 Outback. I owned both. I more or less remedied this with better head-gaskets. It's still possible for this to be a problem on any car, but it's worth noting that the flat engine makes it a bit harder to get at them to replace them should you want to do it yourself.
Great Review! BTW-I believe the real benefit of the plastic intake manifold is not just because it's "lightweight and cheap", but it also acts to insulate the incoming cold air from the engine's heat (which would reduce its power).
Engineering Explained Also it must be that from a service point of view removing bolts from the plastic composite poses a decent risk of stripping the threads and there is no easy way to retool these? Right? Or is an aluminum manifold just as sensitive?
Akiva Feinstein The Upper Intake Manifold (plastic item you see when you pop the hood) almost always has a bolt pattern consisting of clearance holes (not tapped holes) to allow the assembly bolts to pass through it for attachment to the Lower Intake Manifold (metal). On another note, high-torque tapped holes in plastic are rare (unless it's a special * expensive *, engineered plastic designed for such use). It's usually more economical to press threaded metallic inserts into the plastic substrate if you need it to be threaded.
Thank you for this review. Is the width of this vehicle the same as the outback? Also, is the transmission reliable and will it be more expensive to work on if there are problems down the road? Thanks!
I drove the the 4 cylinder Legacy and noticed the same thing when you upshift (in regards to the feeling of a boost), it was very interesting, nothing like a turbo though.
Really nice review! The all new A4 can almost automatically drive itself from 0 to 65 mph but still Legacy is much more affordable and spacious than the A4.
Your reviews are very good ! You can make more reviews , for example, some good cars in engineering or desigh . That will be great ! No matter new or old one.
Not in a Subaru (though I own a 2009 Legacy), but I had ACC in a 2009.5 Touareg TDI and thought it would be just a gimmick... I ended up loving the feature during long road trips, especially late at night when I wanted to focus on the road and not my speed (the car worried about speed for me). Completely agree with your statement about adding this feature if you can afford it in any car!
just ordered to build mine today. it's gonna be my first car. I am so excited. i got 3.6R limited since 2.5i is somewhat sluggish on awd cars like subarus..i dont know if i made the right decision. I hope gas bills wont make me go bankrupt.
Thank you for replying! good to hear fuel eco is not too bad. Btw I love your reviews. One of the best reviews out there. Really like the view from engineers perspective. gave me confidence on my purchase
I could hear a lot of road and wind noise in the cabin while you were on the highway. That is one of the only issues that makes me hesitant towards a subaru purchase. Other than that, love your videos, very detailed reviews. Thank you!
ethan999oz Haha, thanks! Flashy photography and music go a long way in attracting an audience, something I've never been good at nor cared to embrace. Appreciate your viewership!
Some 90 year old in a legacy cut me off and I was like hmmm that's a decent looking Subaru so now I want one lol
Not sure why that made me lol
😂😂😂
😂😂😂 bruh it was an old woman who did the same and now I'm in the market for one 😂
My legacy runs phenomenally great, the only problem I had to fix was getting a new alternator and now a new ball joint after hitting a really bad pothole last February. Did I mention my Legacy is from 1993. Best car manufacturers ever.

How did the car hold up? Do you still have it and would you buy it again?

Finally a review by someone that actually knows something about cars, other than how they drive and look.
The inside shots now look much more professional than in the previous reviews. Great work and great review once again.

Very thoughtful placement of the battery, dipstick, coolant fill access, etc. Good job Subaru.

AWDfreak can the 6 speed bolt right to the 3.6R if you swapped the 2.5i out?
Excellent review. One of the best Videos. awesome :-). When i looked at some other videos where were wishy washy with no technical content.
Happy to hear it, thanks for watching Alek!
Thanks for the detail on the adaptive cruise. It is a must have on my next vehicle.
Fantastic review. Not many reviewers go through the details the way you do. Its shows you know what you talked about. Keep it up.
GOOD JOB! I like going into the technical side more in a review. THUMBS UP!
dont care what anyone says about how outdated the boxer engine is. Its really hard to improve upon perfection in the reliability sense of it.
Major Pain But it's unreliable.
Sauren Louthern lol what?!?! 🤣😂🤣😆
I never thought I'd say this about the Legacy but I want this car.
+Kyle Grodkowski I brought it last month, awesome car check out photos on my facebook page "superhero superette"
The location of the battery is due to the placement of the Boxer engine. It's square, flat, and in the middle. So the battery goes to the side.
Cheers!
You always do thorough testing and are not afraid to criticise the car in any way. Good review.
What a terrific, knowledgeable, thorough, useful review. I can't imagine it being any better. Thank you.
Walt Odets Very welcome, glad you found it useful!
Now that's what you call a thorough review.
Thanks!
This is a damn good review, one of the best
Jared Tate Thanks!
Engineering Explained I'd have to agree. I really appreciated the ride along. Considering this car and this review helped tremendously!
Thanks EE2... I watch a lot of car reviews from RUclips; by far you do the best. So detailed...
how old is this guy i can't ell if he's 40 or 19 lmao
Peter Cooney Somewhere in the middle, keep guessing.
Engineering Explained :D
*_Peter Pan._* 👀
Idgaf lmao
This guy is daddy
Atleat when he's 40 you will be guessing if he is 19 or 40 🤷
Well thought out and produced review.
I hear ya! One of the things I like about Subaru is the vast majority of their lineup (minus the Legacy and Outback) offer manual transmissions.
I didn't know that until you mentioned it. That is so awesome!
Ty
Yea this makes me really sad. I have a 2008 3.0r in manual and it is a great car and would love to upgrade to a new 3.6r but not having a manual would kill it for me.
you can get the 2.5 manual in canada, not the 3.6/
Other advantages of the plastic composite intake manifolds are the lack of rough casting imperfections on the inside and their resistance to heat soaking. The best option for road-going cars today, honestly. They are also plenty strong, even for heavy forced induction.
Unless it's bmw plastic lol they blow apart
This has that Best Motoring level of detail that us car guys need
One of your best reviews. Thank you very much!!!
It seems very easy to drive in the states, the road is smooth, wide, not many traffic, and your driving AT car. Try drive in Asia, small road, very busy, people and street vendor in your left right side, and so many motorbikes
I have been eyeing up one of these. They look so nice! And I'm loving the moonroof
Would love an STI version of this with some brembo brakes and about 290 horse. I would also love to see in the next gen STI a flat 6 twin turbo.
Keep up the good work and reviews! We need people like you. Thanks!
I think all the legacys of every year look great
Well done. I like your very technical style, more reviews please!
I love the way you review the car...very good job.
greetings from Iran!
Great! Thanks for this 2016 6 cyl. Legacy review. I bought mine on a busy, rainy Saturday and didn't get much info.
Thanks for the detail explanation! Best review ever!
WoOOoW
i loved
I've never seen a review like this before , and I mean that in the best way!!
ragabanation Thanks!
Love the review, proper and thorough review with attention to the kinds of details I like to pay attention to! Thanks for uploading, I hope to see more of these in-depth reviews (especially Subaru vehicles).
"I probably fall outside of the normal width ratio so I cant really blame Subaru for that one" LOL!!
nice...very nice
I do wish the front seats had a little more bolstering.
Lexus has that kind of cruise control almost 10 years ago, its radar cruise control. For me, Its a great feature!!
It's great, the Volvo XC60 I'm driving currently had it as well, and it's wonderful.
The paddle shifters make this car INCREDIBLY fun to drive. You can downshift at any time. Especially before you hit a tight corner. :)
Thinking about buying one of these used. There's one in my area with 40k miles and it looks very clean. I think I'll go for a test drive tomorrow to see what it's like
Interesting to see that Subaru has made a very good CVT. Seems to be preferable than many conventional slushboxs.
I agree, they look much better in person, it's astounding
MixingGBP I just traded my 06 Audi A4 for the 2.5i limited Legacy. Really nice car.
Really good review sir very knowledgeable keep it up
Excellent reviewer! Love the in depth mechanical info and knowledge.
10/10 review
BTW-I believe the real benefit of the plastic intake manifold is not just because it's "lightweight and cheap", but it also acts to insulate the incoming cold air from the engine's heat (which would reduce its power).
mitchlu Great point, certainly less conductive than a metal. But certainly not as durable.
I'm still happy to drive my 1992 legacy
Just got a 2009... first car, affordable and quaint. But this... hot damn!
So is EyeSight just the adaptive cruise/braking/lane departure? Like a name for the full safety package?
Correct
Engineering Explained
incorrect it does more than that. throttle control and lead vehicle departure warning
Matthew Konchan hence the "full package" part of that question.
Really nice review! The all new A4 can almost automatically drive itself from 0 to 65 mph but still Legacy is much more affordable and spacious than the A4.
Excellent commentary! Thank you so much for your professional, detailed, mechanical, and engineering review!
workoutlui Very welcome, glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Your reviews are very good ! You can make more reviews , for example, some good cars in engineering or desigh . That will be great ! No matter new or old one.
Best car review ever!
Yuki Sung Awesome, I managed to get decent fuel economy with the 3.6L, so I wouldn't be all that concerned. I get 23 mpg in my 2.5L Subaru (STI) haha.
Thank you!
You definitely deserve more subs and likes. I've never seen a review as thorough as you have done here. Great Job!
ethan999oz Haha, thanks! Flashy photography and music go a long way in attracting an audience, something I've never been good at nor cared to embrace. Appreciate your viewership!
Well that's what makes you unique and on top of that, thank you for taking the time to reply to my comment. Not many people do that.
Cheers mate!
That was a thorough and excellent review! Thank you!
Great review, I really like your perspective. I have the 2015 Outback and completely agree with your thoughts on the brake pedal.
