- The 2015 Subaru Outback is on an all-new platform, with symmetrical all wheel drive and a lineartronic CVT. It features active torque vectoring, electric power steering, and a 2.5L boxer four with 175 hp. The all-new infotainment system includes a standard touch screen display and back-up camera. The touch screen, unlike many in the automotive world these days, is actually quite responsive.

NEW VIDEO EVERY WEDNESDAY!
Thank you for not having theme music
Your car reviews are so detailed, you make other car reviewers look bad. lol
chris E i second this
chris E Agreed! He does a fantastic job. Looks like he really enjoys what he does too. Keep up the great work!
chris E Agreed although I find his starting almost every sentence with 'so' extremely annoying. It's a distracting habit.
+andrew booton - Chill Andrew, it's just a car review.
it helps that he is an engineer
you got one of the best car reviews out of all the reviewers, you speak clearly, hit all the points that is important, and have some technical info about it. Love it keep it up
very true about the throttle. It goes hard from a stop
I understand this in an old video (maybe 7 years ago), but I like when you review vehicles. I particularly like that you don't have super loud; incoherent music playing in the background👍
That is exactly why i love his reviews. He needs to do more car reviews. I like his methodical approach.
This guy is just awesome! He has 2 brains - one for talking and another for driving and doing stuff, impressive! And lovely to listen him coz he talks Casey Affleck's voice!
Thanks for the best Outback review I've seen.
Very welcome, happy to hear it!
Great location for engine oil filter. First I ever see anything like this.
Easily the very best review of the latest generation Subaru Outback on the net ! Thorough, balanced coverage of the pros and cons. Level of detail well above the typical, and I learned several new facets of this clever AWD sport utility. Well done on the great review work and kudos to Subaru for the results of their latest Outback refresh.
This is by far the most helpful Outback review I've seen posted on youtube, especially with the point-of-view camera angles which lets you feel as if you're in the driver seat during the majority of this video. Thank you for posting!!
Andrew Vondrus Very welcome, glad you found it helpful!
It was great seeing you today! It's a wild experience seeing you in person after watching your videos for years. :)
Great to see you too, hope you had a pleasant Powell's experience!
Excellent review! I appreciate the details you include, which are largely ignored in most other automotive reviews.
Still a very good car nearly 8 years later.
Best things about wagons? The ability to chuck a single mattress in the back and crash in it overnight while on long trips. Miss my old 97 Camry.
This was the first "Engineering Explained" review I've seen... and I'm hooked! This review of the new Outback was the most informative and well explained. Keep up the great work and thank you!
No one else ever mentions serviceability in reviews. Thanks!
Thanks for some great reviews, I've watched several of your's and it's refreshing to listen to someone who clearly understands the level of engineering behind the products. Well done and keep up the good work.
Awesome review. I love you videos. Your review of the 2015 WRX helped me make my decision. Thank you very much for that. You ALSO drive in one of my absolute favorite areas for driving.
Much love to a fellow Oregonian.
I own one these and it is amazing..actually took it off road today and pulled a little truck stuck in the mud👌
I thought it looked familiar where you were driving. Got to love PNW! Awesome video by the way.
This is by far the best review of the Outback I've seen! Outstanding!
Really great in-depth review. You actually explained thins, which the other reviews on here do not.
I absolutely love your reviews because it makes me feel like I'm there checking out the car lol. I only wish it was a manual :(
"Well that's probably enough work for today" hahaha
I would like to see it running a bit off road and listen to your impressions in that regard, i think would be very interesting. Thank you!
very professional and thorough review. I liked your level of honesty and fairness.
Another amazing review in a row! I loved the off-road part of the Toyota Tundra review and I would LOVE to see you testing all the off-road/crossover vehicles off-road. It doesnt have to be 15 min off-road driving but a couple of bumps/hills/terrains... here and there so people can see, since a lot of people choose crossovers cause they plan on going off-road in certain situations. Keep up the good work!!
Aleksa Nikolic Yep, I agree the part was fun - the challenging part is it requires approval each time from the manufacturer. Because the TRD Pro was clearly built for off-road use, I took it off-road (and then asked for forgiveness, as I didn't know I needed to ask for permission). Ultimately, several things will make a vehicle capable in rougher terrain: 4WD/AWD and ground clearance (as well as tire selection) probably play the biggest role, which this has. Obviously other smaller things like differentials, suspension travel, etc., but this is certainly set-up to be capable for mild use off the beaten path.
This is how a video should be done...🎉
because we saw this great review of this out back my dad and I went to get this car yesterday
+NECrailfan 822 You hear that Subaru? :) Congrats on the new ride!
Thanks and keep up with the great videos
New England Rail Videos it’s 2020. How is your Outback doing so far? Would you say you made a good purchase ?
Love your reviews, guy. Thanks for not "reviewing" like most of the tools out there.
Great review, I just bought a 2016 and your thorough analysis helped me make my decision.
Corey Geving it’s 2020 and I’m thinking of getting an Outback. How is your outback holding up? Do you think it will last your 10+ years ? Any engine problems?
Hooray he didn't review the most expensive model.
Hey dude, great review. You're super detailed, super practical, and seemingly unbiased. Nice job.
Would you buy one with 162,000 KM (100,662 miles)? Just test drove it and it is in beautiful condition but I'm worried about the mileage. Your overview is fantastic. Thanks!
An excellent review. Detailed explanation on all areas. Can you review the Outback 3.6R and the 2.0 Diesel?
Seems that your Mobil 1 grey sharpie has plenty of ink left xD
Great review as always. Always loved the subie outback.
Can you review the 2015 Subaru xv crosstrek? (If you haven't already)
AllYourTechNow Indeed I can, and probably will soon!
Engineering Explained Thanks!
AllYourTechNow Sorry this never happened! It was switched out for the Impreza. Very similar in design though, XV with more clearance.
Engineering Explained Yeah pretty much. I just realized you've reviewed almost every Subie except for 2 or 3, that pretty impressive xD
Great review , i wish we had you doing this in Australia, keep up the good work.
Thank you for dB information!!! Finally some information relevant for everyday Autobahn driver
hi, is it possible that in the future you use the old fashion way to calculate the mpg? cause I don't really trust the dash, like my ct200h, everytime it overstates 2mpg. Thanks.
hi im roger sorry i forgot your name but i really enjoyed your review on the subaru outback yes they are great car's i soon will be getting another one 2016 outback yer awsome man you know yer stuff
Very good review there pal
You should have a Tahoe or Yulon next on your list of reviews. I would really like to see your opinion on big SUV's. Happy Easter
I'm going to have an Escalade soon.
such a good review, good job!
Great car but hate the CVT. Manual gearbox is okay since it is direct drive.
Loved this review!! I'm looking at 2016 and 2015 limited. Which one would you choose sir?
Thanks for the review! We bought our 2013 Subaru Outback to day!! :-)
Amazing car review. Extremely detailed. Subbed for doing a great job.
Good review! Very informative and clearly understood
Incredibly in-depth. Very cool
Good review; I think I know where you are for the reviews.
As many have said the best detailed review. Will you be doing one on the Subaru Forester? Thanks for all the information. Sales people should view these as many do not know much about their cars. 2012 Outback
Great review, but I can't stop thinking about the April's fool day video :-)
Great vid boss, always enjoy these reviews.
ey b0ss
Very good and professional review. Thanks a lot, really helpful.
The biggest question of all, who few are willing to answer:
How RELIABLE is this car? Will I still be driving this car 10 years from now?
Does this engine suffer from blow head gaskets?
In terms of reliability, Japanese cars are ALWAYS more reliable than European and American cars. Expect this car to last past 150,000 miles, even 200,000 with regular checkups and keeping it in good shape. Someone I know is still driving this car at 350,000 miles. Granted, they use it only for highway use (work) and they’ve kept it up to check VERY CONSISTENTLY, but it shows how reliable the car is.
For prone blow head gaskets, that’s a good question for Google or forums.
I've read Subaru revised the engine design after 2009 to rectify the head gasket problem.
Steve I’ve read in many places that this is still an issue in 2016 models. I haven’t been able to find info on newer models because the (2017) cars are still, of course, just 3 years old.
Those roads look amazing, almost like the ones from the first need for speed for ps1 back in the day.
Thanks for the great review for my car of the future.
Very useful review as I choose my first Subaru. Thank you.
Have the '15 Outback Limited with EyeSight, love the car, just wish they offered it in manual in the US. One thing about the infotainment/AC panel that has bugged me is the placement of the clock, feels very much like an afterthought.
I’m buying this car!!! Thank you for the review 😄
I ve test drove one, and it feels much more refined in every way, compared to my '11 Outback. (Suspension, handling, cvt...ect) The only negative was that it felt slower. I think because the new one is heavier.
Do you know how much heavier is it ?
Ps.: nice review!
Wow! 34.8 mpg? Man that's the perfect car to steal, you could drive away for hours! Wouldn't you agree Jason?
My 2015 has a full tank estimated range of as high as 500 miles.
Now that this car is 4 years old (2019 now), how reliable is it still?
Blown head gaskets? I hear Subaru quality has plummeted big time.
Not sure to get this or a 2015 CRV.
the machinist no
Great review! Thanks for the ride!
Great review.
hey there mister engineer man, i think you have a great channel, but one thing that im curious about. When you make a claim to the mpg, you tend to rely on the computer, could you maybe get a real life solution, just cause i know on many occasions, the computer can be off, some times considerably.
and between all the crossover style cars youve tested (cross country, outback, xv, ect.), what would be the best, as far as off road comfort, and general practicality??
cause thats going to make my decision alot easier, but im quite sure the subaru outback will take the cake, maybe the xv.
Excellent review, as always loaded with the technical stuff nobody else seems to care about. I had a 2014 Forester - bought in 2013 - and traded it in for a 2015 VW Tiguan, I loved the Forester but the infotainment was awful - it was the older one, which looks like an old Pioneer radio - and suspension was too rough for me having a small child back then. I've always wanted an Outback, but I really didn't like the old model, now this one looks way nicer and rugged. Haven't had a test drive yet.
My main concern by now is that the VW has a very solid, sturdy feel to it, and really superb fit & finish, also well loaded with gadgets and small details aimed to make life easier; for instance it has a fatigue detection system, lumbar support not only travels front and back, but also up and down so you can hit right on the spot, all 4 windows have anti trapping system and one touch up/down in every door, and even though the audio system is not the biggest one - it's not the Fender system -, it has a very nice 8 speaker system that sounds extremely well. Seats in the VW are excellent too. And it has the most brilliant engine I've ever had in a car, punchy as hell.
Its weakest points are visibility - compared to Subaru at least -, premium fuel consumption - 2.0 TSI + 4Motion - and space, for 2nd row seats and cargo, considering I'm about 6'2" I usually take most of the space of the poor soul that will sit behind me.
I'd love to know what's your opinion on this trade. Thank you.
I wonder if by now you changed the VW to the Outback?
VW are great overall but their engines and gearboxes unreliable. They all drink oil
@@abdallaamg297 I had the VW for 4 years without any problems. I traded it for an Outback, kept it for a couple of years, no problems, but 2.5 with no turbo and a CVT is not a good mix. Traded the Outback for a V6 Sorento and that was a nice change. The Sorento quickly developed interior noises and the leather sport seats were a bit too hard for my taste, you feel it on long trips; traded it in for a new Edge, that one offers a very good mix of power, tech and comfort.
very nicely edited video
My dad has this exact same car and really likes it.
Nick Joslin I love what this car has; but I don't have it yet - I am reviewing my options. What does your dad like and dislike about this car? Can you tell me?
I don't really think he has had many negative things to say about it thus far.
Nick Joslin Okay; what then does he like about it?
Your dads a smart man, I bought mine yesterday it’s the best vehicle I’ve owned
Really well done video. Great work!
Great video. Test driving one soon.
btw thank you for the detailed reviews. Keep it up.
Great & thorough review! You have a new fan.. But on the highway, consider not Cruising in the passing lane. Pet peeve.. Blessings - JB
Great detailed review. Thank you.
Very helpful review. Thanks
I love my 2011 Outback limited loaded mostly because it doesn’t have all those nanny controls
Really like Outback, ideal car for my lifestyle
Great review as always,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
I'm about to put a 2.4L K24 engine in my MR2 Spyder and I'm in Portland if you want to drive it sometime. 2,000 lbs 240hp 200tq
Thank you for a very elaborate review.
I find the mpg on the display to be at least 1 mpg higher than it actually is.
I think the body roll is a good safety feature to discourage me from doing anything stupid..
One feature of the parking brake most people don't notice: If you apply the parking brake with your seat belt on, and it is in gear, it can be used as a hold, and will release when the accelerator is pressed.
Ty !! About to buy one.
If you can find it (it's pretty rare) I suggest you review a Kia Rio5 SX fully loaded. It's a god car
The best car review I have ever seen....:/
Gr8 review I'm seriously considering an Outback right now! Have an infiniti m35x but mpg and ground clearance can't touch OB
Have a look at a forester as well, same size, shaped different
Would you be able to do a 3.6R review of the Outback?
This was a great review. I can understand everything you said. Do you think it's worth the extra price and fuel penalty to get the 3.6R engine, or for most of the time do you think the 2.5 is fine. I have an 09 Forester with the 2.5 although it's not fast, I find it fine most of the time even heading up I80 to the ski resorts. I hope to get an Outback in about one year. I have now a loaner 16 Crosstrek with 'Eye Sight" and I love it, except for the slow acceleration. I'm waiting for the Takata inflator recall, I was told it should be in late September 2016. Thanks so much for the fine review.
+A gm (snowman) I think the 2.5 is fine, my parents drive one and it's great. Not quick by any means, but certainly adequate.
Thank you for your reply.
Grab the 3.6R if you find your forester is on the ehhh side of things as they're about the same but the CVT in addition makes it "feel" slower since you don't feel it shifting as hard. You'll be upgrading the speakers in the 2.5i sometime as well. You should wait for the 2016 model if you highway drive a lot. The 2016's eyesight lane keep assist bounces you back into your lane while the 2015 doesn't. It also has a better radio antenna. For an SUV, the body roll is minimal, just a bit more than a smaller car.
Your gain from the 2.5 to the 3.6 is minimal for the vehicles use. Not much quicker and only gains 300lbs of towing capacity. For 2017 the 3.6 gets 27-28 mpg and the 2.5 is rated for 33. I currently get about 28 mpg with about 70% in town and only 2k miles. With the other new subaru the have had (4 in the last 4 years, multiple for upgrades not issues. currently own a 2017 outback and 2016 crosstrek.) we typically see mpg settle after about 15k miles. I have seen nearly 30 mpg already with more highway travel. I will see how all highway is in November for a family trip.
Unless you really like your audio I don't see upgrading speakers either if you get a package with the upgrades stereo system. The Harmon Kardon system you can get sounds really good.
What a great review. Thank you.
Great video but I feel you didn't talk about brake response, throttle stiffness, and pushing the car much. Other than that its good.
Hi Jason great video as always! Quick question, what type of gas do you use to fill up the cars you test drive? Do you always use regular or do you put in what the manufacturer recommends?
Always the recommended.
Looking forward to test drive the 2.0 DIT Outback later this month
Lol, when he said that there is more than 70 cubics, I was pretty sure he was going to say' there is enough space for me and my wife' :-)
Interesting to see that I never see Outback reviews that show that you can store the cargo cover under the floor, on top of the jack
Good day sir. Sorry for my ignorance, I just like to know if the 3.6r engine uses regular unleaded or premium fuel? Thanks!
Please review the reliability of the cvt transmission in the Subaru outback
You have a link to anything? Not sure how he would have reviewed that over 3 years ago
Jay1 it’d be great if he investigated long term reliability of these cars. I keep hearing horror stories of Subarus with destroyed engines or transmissions at barely 80,000 miles.
I’ve been dying to get a Forester or an Outback but these stories I keep hearing are driving me to a 2015 CRV.
@@foxkenji I find a 2015 outback limited with 240k miles for $5.5k. totally worth it for the 2nd gen eyesight and blind spot.
Steve those features are great in Subarus. The question remains on engine reliability. Eyesight won’t save you from blown engine headgaskets, nor an engine consuming excessive amounts of oil, like the Subaru engines are known to do.
Wish you would have tested the flat 6, but still a great review
i love your review
Great review. I have an A4 avant 2018, except for The noise level and 190hk tdi i always Wonder what could have been. Next one is tesla, outback or a6
not a fan of the seats personally but i hope they bolster them a tad bit more on the sides and thigh area in the 2016 model.
He live in the Pacific Northwest I new those roads look familiar I don't live far from where he was driving.
