That is the truth. They are paid to tell the truth and not decide for me what I need to know. CNN MSNBC WASHINGTON POST AND NEW YORK TIMES Are communists trying to control the information that they want me to know.
No. Because media companies have to decide what generates the most outrage and therefore the most views every day. They can't cover every story. That's what gate keeping or just prioritising is.
@@vikinghitman47 Communists, you say? Communism is a stateless society where Capitalism is abolished. That was Karl Marx's idea of communism, and he, along with Engles, made the definition.
Well, denotation isn't everything to a word. Words do have a history. If I say terrorist, there is a definition that means someone inflicting terror (most likely, I'm too lazy to google it) - but there is a much deeper connotation that exists simply in the word. Attacking the use of a word solely based on its definition, and not it's context or connotation is simply ignorance.
In the context of the video, I'd say gatekeeping means: filtering news that has an actual impact on peoples lives from rather unimportant opinions. Like how opinion on the "some people" wording isn't really news. Every journalist needs to make choices on what to publish, based on what he or she thinks is newsworthy, so in that sense, every newsmedia is a gatekeeper.

A lot of people don’t seem to understand what “gatekeeping” is in the comments; so let’s clear this up. Gatekeeping doesn’t mean launching or a cover up or hiding stories. It’s a reaction to the fact that consumers can consume a finite amount of information in a day. For the thought experiment, let’s say the average person will read about five articles in one day. Suddenly, what is the topic of that article, not even what the article says, becomes hugely important. Gatekeeping means making a judgement call about you’re organization writes about and therefore what is most likely to be the topic of those five articles. For example, let’s use the Jesse Jackson scandal with pictures of Farrakhan in the 90s (so we get some distance). Good gatekeeping might realize that Farrakhan is a legitimately controversial figure and publish one article about the controversy a long with news about the early 90s recession, some coverage of Saddam Hussein and a few other things. It’s worthwhile, but a lot of things are important and deserve attention. Bad gatekeeping would be publishing three articles at once and another one every day for the rest of year, pushing out room for other important news btw. Then, just because these articles are constantly being published, and also we as readers pick up that it’s being prioritized over other stories, like say the economy, this story becomes HUGE, not even huge but domineering. Maybe the articles are about the controversial things Farrakhan has said, maybe it’s about how he makes money off of his position as a religious leader. All legitimately heinous things but also not more important than a nation wide recession which is now being pushed aside because most people read five articles a day and now two are about Farrakhan and all the other important world events have to squeeze into three (which obviously they can’t). More information is not always a good thing. It’s always important to be able to filter out bad or irrelevant information too. If you’ve ever gotten in a conversation with someone who goes on about the latest “superfood” and now spends too much money for, idk beet juice, then you’ve seen the results of what happens when we can’t filter information effectively.
Exactly. It's embarrassing to see self-appointed intellectuals rallying behind "facts" while still being unable to define the word they're arguing about. Censorship in media is a problem, but misinformation is equally dangerous, so gatekeeping is a necessity.
I don’t know about bad actors because I don’t watch much of the political side of news now that it seems to snag at every little detail and can’t get its job done but yah I agree with the rest of it. When every news channel is focused on a story just because it is popular that is bad reporting unless that story is actually more than some click worthy story. It is like spending everyday making articles about the Watergate scandal the moment one channel mentions that it could be a real issue or the investigation is announced and even if there nothing to actually report. They didn’t do that and left the man alone to face his investigation at first because there were more important things, like economic recessions to cover. Now the smearing starts and the news can’t talk about anything else. (Well mostly the Republican Party. The Democrats don’t endless spew on about Donald being ignorant every time he slips up since that is harmful to good news even if it is true!) Stuff like Donald seeming to not know what the Paris agreement actually is doesn’t need to be covered by every news channel (unlike bigger stories) unless you are directly smearing the guy and it wasn’t. There are better stories that actually have people who would be interested in them that don’t need to be toxic to get views as most political media ends up being through selectivity and partisanship. These stories just get pushed out of the way a lot of the time because it is easier to pick up the political story being tossed around by other networks even if those non-political stories would also be news-worthy and this is why the news needs to be vet what it looks at.
Vanalovan you may want to learn to condense your comments politics aside not many people will read past the first few lines anything past that isn’t often read so many people will agree without knowing what your trying to say you should know this as your comment specifically mentioned gate keeping as being based on the amount of information you can consume

@pettipitti lol I’m a Canadian
Cnn all I have to say
The Democrats don’t endless spew on about Donald being ignorant every time he slips up since that is harmful to good news even if it is true!)
Stuff like Donald seeming to not know what the Paris agreement actually is doesn’t need to be covered by every news channel (unlike bigger stories) unless you are directly smearing the guy and it wasn’t.

Guys, you missed the mark. April Fool's Day was 2 months ago.
They can't even get that right.
For those confused about others wondering he talks about news being gatekeepers, he's referring to the fact that news has, first and foremost, a duty to report accurate information. Libel laws exist for a reason, and frankly given how fox news has been acting, and the degree to which they have published inaccurate information, it's been way past time that they have been taken to court for its habitual libel offenses. I'm just glad Washington is finally doing it.
This is why all news feels like Fox News. This all makes so much sense.
"Ahh, that pleases me" LMAO
Let's use our emotions instead of critical reasoning and logic. Epic!
Damn that's so reptillian
I like how he did not mention CNN
Can't wait to see what you think about CNN
You didn't even watch the whole video. He called CNN bad at the end.
@Andre Lucas You're joking right?
He's criticized CNN before in other videos, particularly *CNN is treating politics like sports, and it's making us all dumber*
@@4mazIngxXGamEr where really?
Fox News: let's have Tucker talk about Racist Trees..

They don't talk about the issues like health, homelessness and cost of living..both only talk about each other
This video: An attempted explanation of a rhetorical tactic utilized by a specific news organization that was founded as an extension of the RNC’s political campaigns.
The top comments: Substanceless dismissives by people who shouldn’t be wasting their time even making the comments in the first place.
You are not as clever as you think you are.
I find this video very hypocritical. Liberals own almost all media networks and this guy obsesses over the one that doesn't fit his narrative. If you turn on CNN you will see that they are obsessed with trump and blow any little thing he does out of proportion. Basically every media outlet does what he is accusing fox of.
Vox's video on how Republicans are breaking politics: explains most of these comments
these people have no sense of self awareness at all 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I thought we had it bad in Italy with Mediaset. Thank God I don't live in the US
You're lucky you don't have CNN there. It's the equivalent of Fox but for the left and are way worse.
Walter White
Yeah, no! Fox is a Republican based “news” outlet.
anche mediaset ha il suo bias, ma almeno non arriva ai livelli americani. Qui usano l'ignoranza per avere i voti dei "meno acculturati", in america ci hanno fatto una canale intero e ora come ora è anche il più visto.

@@quantumblurrr hows that an opinion? Either their is something to impeach on or there isnt. Maybe read the report. It is all there! The only reason he was not charge was because the of a stupid policy about not charging a sitting president. It was plainly said in the report it is up to congress to impeach a sitting president.... per policy. I will lay odds that if he loses the next election, he is going to say it was rigged.
This brings up a difficult point that doesn't really have an answer: How do you prevent something like this happening?
You expose the operative for what it is.
gov fnded independent media ie bbc abc cbc
ye the left got most of the social media like instagram. you will never find a post for anti immigration on instagram without following accounts like that unless stuff like climate change. both sides try to conquer the internet.

Vox : I didn't see that!

The real scary ones are mainstream media brainwashing people into believing the narrative they wanna push. They never try to understand motives of the other side. fox news is much fairer.

That’s the funny thing, if you think this video is even halfway true, you are currently being manipulated by vox. Vox is trying to attack the only MSM that says anything contrarian to the left. You are brainwashed. This is brainwashing.
lol
It's social engineering and sociology manipulation, on a major scale.
This is very dangerous for society.

You are a brainwashed fool and you’re far too stupid to realize it. Yes I may be subscribed to fox, but I still watched this Vox video along with a lot of other leftist media. That’s the problem with the left, they only get their information from one biased side instead of listening to both biased sides. When you watch both you can cut out the bullshit and see what’s true for yourself. If you only watch one side then you will take everything they say as gospel.

You’re telling me CNN doesn’t do political media? LMFAO
They said at least twice that CNN was left. They never claimed this. Only that the left doesn't have a counterpart to Fox, so they are forced to instead react to Fox.
Fox has no equivalent. Fox is fox. Remember when they complained when Obama golfed? When Hillary use private email? When Bill Clinton had an extramarital affair? Check check check for Trump and what does Fox say about that? No media defended the previous 3 actions but Fox.
Prove it
@@fayde9941 ...NBCUniversal doesn't own CNN. Really not particularly complicated research on that, sparky. And NBCUniversal investing in online media like BuzzFeed and Vox doesn't represent some grand liberal conspiracy to control the minds of the youth. If you think MSNBNC and CNN are even in the same universe as Fox in turns of manipulation and propaganda, you're out of your mind.
So vox is just gonna act like cnn and msnbc aren’t biased LOL
CNN has an establishment bias. They hate Bernie Sanders & Donald Trump for the same reason (but they hate Bernie Sanders more) they mess with the status quo.
MSNBC is biased to the Democratic wing of the establishment. They never really question the shady things Democrats do & they only really question Republicans if it doesn’t upset the status quo.
Here is why you need the news to be selective:
When every news channel is focused on a story just because it is popular that is bad reporting unless that story is actually more than some click worthy story.
It is like spending everyday making articles about the Watergate scandal the moment one channel mentions that it could be a real issue or the investigation is announced and even if there nothing to actually report.
They didn’t do that and left the man alone to face his investigation at first because there were more important things, like economic recessions to cover. Now the smearing starts and the news can’t talk about anything else. (Well mostly the Republican Party. The Democrats don’t endless spew on about Donald being ignorant every time he slips up since that is harmful to good news even if it is true!)
Stuff like Donald seeming to not know what the Paris agreement is doesn’t need to be covered by every news channel (unlike bigger stories) unless you are directly smearing the guy and it wasn’t. There are better stories that actually have people who would be interested in them that don’t need to be toxic (as most political media ends up being through selectivity and partisanship) to get views.
These stories just get pushed out of the way a lot of the time because it is easier to pick up the political story being tossed around by other networks even if those non-political stories would also be news-worthy and news networks also feel pressured to cover bad news just to remain relevant. This is why the news needs to vet what it looks at.
