Many thanks, I will consider buying the action 5, many people are still complaining about the low bit rate issue, but overall compared to the Go pro 13 it's way much better, good thing about Dji they always release a firmware update which hopefully will improve the action 5.

Just seen a video before where the Chipset of the osmo action 5 pro was analised. The Chipset is capable of 8k video encoding and could easily push 200+ mbit/s bitrate battery life would probably be down by 20-30% but who cares, if you have 3 Battery's? 🤷
Haven't watched it yet but did see the video mentioned on Reddit! If they can unlock its potential through firmware updates that would be awesome! I agree a shorter battery life is fine as a trade-off. Just not sure whether it is possible and whether there could be any overheating implications.
@@captureguide In the Day 1 reviews the OA 5 pro could record in 4k30 with both screens on for 2h 15+min, so 4k30 at 200+ Mbit/s for 20min recording without overheating shouldn't be a problem.
I live in SoCal, and I have 2 friends that I grew with that are CPU Architecture Performance Engineers at Qualcomm San Diego. They watched that video and said there is no way that chip could easily do 8k video/push 200+ mbit/s in the Action 5 form factor. It doesn'tt have the thermal cooling capabilities to keep the CPU in its safe operating temperature. Basically, the CPU will start experiencing degradation issues due to heat and will start to fail. Also, in order to hit that 8k/200+ mbit/ they said DJI would have to offload a lot of the CPU cycles that happen in the background. Things like HorizonSteady and RealSteady. In order for that chip to hit 8k/200+ mbit/s it would need to be in a much larger form factor with really good thermal managment, offloading a lot of the background application to a secondary CPU and the main CPU only handling the 8k/200+ mbit/s. Something that will never happen in the Action 5 Pro.
I talked to a reviewer about the extreme oversharpening on oa5 compared against oa4. She said both cameras were set -2 in Detail. Oa5 was still too sharp. Oa4 looked so much better and cinematic.
For example (clockwise), 2:41 transition between the high building on the right and the sky has halo The mixed lane lacks texture. Detail is missing in the phone booth. The bicycle lane is compressed so much, bricks blur into each other. Stone on the left is a hit-and-miss, some parts are sharp, other just blurred into each other (compare the very left brick, second row from bottom, as reference). - By and large, it looks like it was recorded by a phone. (I have the OA4, and an OA5 in the mail.)
The thing is, that is most likely caused by RUclips's HEAVY compression rather than the Osmo Action 5 Pro's slight compression. A freeze frame of the footage would really help as the compression of the video doesn't apply to still non-moving objects.
it's a possible theory. Before the release i imagined the contrary theory, like making little internal storage with high speed to allow high bitrate recording and use it as cache before write on low speed micro sd. Micro sd have very low speed compared to the speed of top end SD.
Thanks! The LUT is just an official LUT downloaded from the DJI website. I used the "DJI OSMO Pocket 3 D-Log M to Rec.709" LUT. I also tried the "DJI OSMO Action 4 D-Log M to Rec.709 vivid LUT" and it seemed to do exactly the same thing.
After seeing the leaked specs for the Osmo action five, I was convinced that it wasn’t worth waiting for. I had a trip coming up, so I went ahead and bought the action four. I was nervous about the release and the footage looking much better. After watching a few of the sponsor reviews though , I felt like the action four footage looked better, but to make sure it wasn’t my own bias, I asked everybody around me and they all agreed. I feel like the action five is trying to look too much like the GoPro (at least in the standard profile). Your video is the first one I have seen aboutthe bit rate, so that makes me even more confident in my decision.
Yes I want H.264 back please, in my testing's the camera is great and in the right conditions a great image too. But my Action 4 looks equally as good with ND Filters and D-log currently, the only real step up is the battery life, better screens & the DJI Mic2 connection is so much better. I just get the feeling DJI are holding back on firmware for the Action 5 & the Neo.
An important fact that was missing from all the sponsored videos on the day of release...however it's good to see it seems artefacts are well controlled, at least initially. As someone who moved to Japan this week it's good to know about the open box policy!
Awesome! Return policies depend on the store. The 50% thing is Amazon JP's policy, some shops have different policies so it's worth checking them beforehand.
I really like the camera but the bit rate is kinda scaring me because i dont know if it will stay like this or they will make it better. Im waiting for a update
Contemplating replacing my Hero 9 with an Action 5... I’ve got a Pocket 3 and a Mini 4 Pro, great products from DJI. But... I'm hesitating with the Action 5, I'll wait a few weeks before i decide! Thanks for the review 🙂
Low bitrate should be tested not in the city, but for example, downhill on a bicycle in the forest, where there are a lot of small details that at low bitrate will merge into squares and mush
Dude, for real though - thank you for making this. I thought maybe it was me/my eye balls worked differently. These YT shills jizzing over the OA5pro image because "new sensor", I just couldn't understand why - it just looked overprocessed/bad (or at least not gud) to me. Poor highlight management, and colours are off.
bro, thank you for doing it.. i bought the action 4 two weeks ago then literally the next day of my first usage out (didnt have time) - i got email 'dji pro is coming'.. damn! :D this lower bitrate scares me. the OOOOVEEERRRRLY used HDR scares me. but i start to see the pattern. dji used that in the 'normal color' for every day user. it still looks like crap to me. there could be a simple setting for that like sharpness etc... off, middle way, full on. Because full on is crappy looking, i would have to record in the log, would have to grade every single footage i shoot. hmm... but if you say you dont see image degrading... i start to think. tho some people mention it, it IS there. the question is when, what conditions etc. great review, thanks!
I nearly purchased but the lower bitrate put me off totally… I am a GoPro buyer mainly but this year thought I might try the OA5 but decided to hold back… hopefully a firmware will fix this… less battery life makes more sense than lower bitrate!
I love having opinions on the other side of the spectrum, that 80MB/S is definitely concerning, I was looking to upgrade my Hero 11 to maybe Action 5 or Hero 13 that have 120mb/s
People tend to forget that even 100MBit/s is a ridiculous high bitrate, even for 4k footage. If someone still knows MPEG2 codecs for 1080p video, which were (in theory) so far inferior to H.264, H.265, but sees 130MBit h.256 videos with blocks and artefacts, then you know that the hardware compressor is simply of very bad quality. I really wonder why almost no-one talks about how bad so many hardware codecs are nowadays. In MPEG2, when most compressors still worked in software, there were huge(!) difference in quality at same bitrate between them. So DJI answer may be marketing talk, but it should be possible to simply increase H.256 compressor quality by a big step as well
If you are not editing then sure but if you will be editing, color grading, etc then for 4K30 10bit 420 at least 90mbps would be ideal. I ordered one before I knew about this so I will compare it to my 4 and if I do not like it I will return the 5. Hopefully, the claim of better algorithms is true but it is something I never heard before. It is still H265. If they told me it was AV1 then I would be fine with it.
Everything one watches is in 8-bit. 3840 x 2160 at 24 fps would take up 1,593 Megabits per second if you wanted each pixel to have a full color. So 120 Mbps is around 8% of the original data (assuming 24 fps!). So 90 would be 6%. The 2% difference in the scheme of things would be difficult to notice. As DJI pointed out, higher bitrates mean more power consumption. If you tried to capture RAW sensor data from an action cam the device would probably explode, or at least melt ;) I don't own either device but it looks to me like the 5 has more "HDR" processing, like that found in phones. If you like that computer assisted look the 5 is good. If you don't, the 4 is better, my guess.
Yeah, true. From my observation and owning Action5, it is doing real time HDR mask using AI. It's all about realtime post processing using 'AI' chip just like smartphone. I think the trend is going toward that direction. If you shoot log, then action 5 doesn't give much improvement from action 4
Should I get the pocket 3 or action 5? I will mostly do vlogging stuff. I know the Pocket 3 is better for my needs on paper, but the convenience and reliability of the action 5 makes it tempting.
Hmm, for anything action-y the Action 5 makes sense but if you want to prioritize video quality, create cinematic stuff or need low light performance the Pocket 3 is better. I will be comparing them in more detail soon, but yes the action 5 is more versatile and convenient. Don't have to worry about dropping it or getting it wet, either. Then again, the Pocket 3 is a lot more convenient than a vlogging camera mounted on a gimbal, which is what it is usually compared to.
@@captureguidethe thing is there is no service center in my country and even though like pocket 3 if the screen flip issue happens or gimbal breaks I will have to fly to Thailand nearest country. That's the reason I was waiting for action 5 since 6 months just hoping for 1 inch sensor which did not happen. Would fly to Thailand by November until then I have time to decide. So if you could do low light test between pocket 3 and action 5 super night mode it would be of great help. Also can you share a tutorial how you edited dlogm in davinci if possible. Thanks in advance.
@@roninr8199 Yes, I'll try and get those things done! I think the Pocket 3 can survive basic usage, but if you're going to be doing more adventurous stuff an action camera or phone is going to be safer. In low light, without a gimbal the image quality can suffer because the EIS needs a higher shutter speed to work with, so the Pocket 3 has 2 advantages in low light (sensor size and gimbal)
@@captureguide I saw some footage of action 5 pro and it's terrible. Might be due to low bitrate. Dji have to push update or people would get insta ace pro 2 which would launch in few days
Excellent info. Can you test is low light/night with super night mode enabled and disabled on your bike ? I often ride at night so wondering if it's a huge upgrade over my osmo 1
Great review! I’m looking for a small camera to film in lower light and mixed light like malls, shops, and evening walks. Do you think the action 5 would be a good choice for walking tours in evening light or in artificial light? I already have the pocket 3 which I love but I’m looking for a second cam.
That's the kind of thing I do as well so I'll be comparing them soon! The Pocket 3 is better video quality wise and especially in low light so there's probably no need for it unless you have some other use cases for an action camera. I mainly bought it for the times the Pocket 3 would be too fragile and it's also less hassle as a wearable camera.
@@captureguide that’s my thinking. The pocket 3 is amazing but fragile. I do have a GoPro and it’s amazingly competent in bright sunlight and outdoors, but in low light it’s just not usable at all. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your comparisons and tests with the Action 5 and Pocket 3.

people who are complaining have NO knowledge about camera tech. my canon r6ii records 4k30p at 60mbs, and canon log in 80mbs. yet its way better than any action camera. beginners have PTSD from gopro compression so all they want and know is high bitrate. do people know the advantage of high bitrate? its only relevant in very fast motion, and it would ONLY be noticeable when all other things are good as well. like a good bigger sensor, and no denoising or sharpening. if the camera is NOT good in low light it would create compression artefacts, its got nothing to do with bitrate. if the camera is doing too much sharpening or denoising, it would create compression artefacts in fast motion. if the camera processor is NOT good, it would NOT be able to process the images quickly and would create compression artefacts. all this is ONLY noticeable in fast motion action. if youre just doing simple walking movements, you wouldnt notice compression from most cameras in bright daylight. the DJI action 5 pro is using a very good processor and compression method and its able to provide good image quality with its bitrate. its all about the sensor size , processor and codec used. not a bunch of bitrate for numbers.
@@Mike_v_E it would depend on what you're doing, are you doing fast biking or simple vlogs? for vlogs you can leave it as it is. but its good to keep both at -1. all my cameras i keep noise reduction at the lowest. unless its low light and i truly need noise reduction. but not daytime.
Not sure most people can notice a difference. 98% of everyone here is a gear head and will buy the latest n greatest when they come out...including me! I just ordered the action 5 pro and will also get the insta360 ace pro2 when it comes out. I like the editing site for insta360 but love the battery life and the dji mic2 compatibility of the action 5 pro.
@captureguide I will say that this is all good for the consumer. I feel bad for Gopro but they just haven't kept up with dji and insta360. Speaking of which, if insta360 can match the battery life and bluetooth connection if the osmo 5, then insta360 becomes king! As a vlogger, the new battery life of the osmo5 is what won me over from the insta360 ace pro.
Thanks for the comparisons, qyuck question since you also have P3 and the mic 2. How easy is it to switch the mic back and fort. Is it seamless can switch easily out in the wild, or do you need to reconnect every single time? Thanks!
You just have to long press the syncing button until the blue light is flashing and then pair it from the wireless mic settings of your OP3/OA5. If your other device is turned on and already paired, it will disconnect first before switching over. It's pretty quick, but there's not like a one press button that switches between devices.
@captureguide awww that's suck! I was hoping after you have linked both. It will automatically connect to which ever turned on first. Thanks for the reply!
This is the official D-Log M to Rec. 709 LUT that you can download on the DJI website. I used the Pocket 3 one since they haven't got one for the Action 5 yet.
I don't like on the Action 5 that they removed the option to keep the screen on all the time during recording. Max now is only 10 minutes. May return it all things considered and just buy another Action 4.
Thanks, wasn't aware of that! It's not a dealbreaker for me but I can see why it's a problem for motorcycle footage where tapping the screen to bring it back isn't an option.
@@captureguide I'm on the fence about it. I honestly think the Action 4 (which I have on my helmet) would work for my purpose (I want to replace the GoPro on my handlebars). When I'm off the bike recording different sites I visit, I really want to see how I'm framed in real time. Someone in another forum told me that the new screen on the Action 5 may require them to time it out. I think my test footage looks fine enough but I'm going to see if they change this setting during my return period.
They did the same at Gopro from the 11 to the 12. I owned both and did some tests with it. The bittrates on the 12 were way lower. Logical because they said they had increased battery life and addressed the overheating. While it was still the very same hardware (they removed the GPS), this should have been done by firmware. Lower bitrates is less processing. Less processing is less power draw and less heat generation. And voila! Especially the resolutions and framerates they had advertised having a longer runtime with the overheating resolved, all had a drastic drop in bitrate compared to the 11. Do DJI probably took the same path here...

It's literally all anyone is talking about, except for the previewers that had to send their videos to dji to sign off on and couldn't mention anything negative under strict nda.
action 5 exclusively uses HEVC codec which is more efficient than x.264 used in action 3 and 4. technically, HEVC delivery better image quality than x.264 even at lower bitrate.
I think they've rushed this out because there seems to be a few issues with it, especially the HDR footage. The outside of trees etc look nuclear! The sharpness is way too high and the overall quality i don't think looks as good as the action 4. This could be like when windows released windows Vista. They couldn't wait to release Windows 7! I imagine the action 6 could be released soon!
I think they'll stick to the yearly release cycle, if they released the 6 so soon there would be a lot of unhappy buyers! It does feel a bit rushed, hopefully they will be good about improving it with firmware updates!
@@captureguide They used a qualcomm chipset in this one which is a powerhouse really, dji so far has only scratched the surface of its capabilities. I wanna buy action 5 pro but the night mode low light footage so far on all reviews look jittery. Can only speculate at the moment. There's no official statement whether these things will or can be fixed. I think we will see improvements, but I'd say you should wait a bit longer before buying it unless you need it asap.
"Windows" didn't release Windows Vista or Windows 7. Microsoft did that. Microsoft had a very long and troubled development history behind Windows Vista, which is why it was a terrible version of Windows. For the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, the concerns in this video are completely within firmware updates, not hardware limitations. And, no, the Action 6 will not be released "soon". It will be release this time next year.
@@SPreeti-oc9kb The jitters will just be a result of the stabilisation struggling with low shutter speeds. It's a matter of physics, so unless you have a camera that can handle really high ISOs well you'll need a gimbal to smooth everything out. Thankfully there's a few options that are pretty cheap these days.
Two major flaws. 1. The 5 has a very bad habit of over exposing shots, which results in considerable detail loss. 2. The lower max bitrate is a major letdown.
The normal color 10bit profile straight out of the 5 pro looks horrific. My osmo action 4 looks MUCH better with the normal color profile straight out of the camera. I might post my thoughts on a video too but I'm very disappointed in the insane HDR look that DJI has chosen to put in the new camera. It's so bad I might return the whole thing.
I've also noticed in one of the reviews I think of Tamara's , the textures are less visible on OA5 than OA4, I'm glad I haven't bought one, I was about to. I might get the Action 4. Not sure if DJI will do anything about it.
What a difference when comparing with Osmo Pocket 3! The Action 5 Pro looks meaningfully unnatural. What I have noticed from other reviewers is that in Action 5 Pro the people's skin looks plasticky.
I still use a Hero 8 Blacks. Cracking camera A lot of the 💩 on these current model/s DJi & GoPro Cameras ? The average user would not use anyways Clever marketing by these companies, as with Apple et al, means people are convinced they must have the latest and supposedly greatest It is generally mot the case
The daylight captures from gopro hero 13 looks so better and more cinematic, the highlights are actually bright unlike the action 5 pro where it tries to capture everything and footage just looks artificial and over do, what's your thoughts on new Hero 13?
The hero 13 is blowing out the highlights. That’s a problem. You can’t get that data back in post but you can fix the color grade issues in the action 5. And increase brightness if you want. For your every day user that does not do a lot of editing, color grading, etc then go pro is fine. But personally I’d rather have that data that I can improve than not have it at all with the Go Pro.
@@mtbohanayes it does, DJI action 5 absolutely smashes the GoPro in dynamic range, it's not even close, it simply records more detail in both the highlights and the shadows and for someone that is decent at colour grading it's a no brainer. The only issue with the action 5 is the bitrate and hopefully it will be fixed in the next firmware update. Low light is also vastly superior on the action 5.
Each product is different in there own way. Action 5 only has a bit rate of 60 MBps bitrate therefore for cinematic i vote for Gopro 12/13 where bit can go 120 MBps plus. Thanks
At least its far superior in low light, rivaling that of the Insta360 AcePro! And its colors are still far more natural and crisp compared to the GoPro Hero 13 Black! Otherwise, we'll see if the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 can surprise!

The thing is, that is most likely caused by RUclips's HEAVY compression rather than the Osmo Action 5 Pro's slight compression. A freeze frame of the footage would really help as the compression of the video doesn't apply to still non-moving objects.
@@creativecarveciteclimb5684 You’re certainly right in that YT will exacerbate the issues. However, it won’t insert the halo and the such.
The worst part is no matter how great your camera captured all these small textures, youtube will destroy it 😢
I have a theory that it is not about battery life but in fact, it is the included Storage inability to to handle over 80mbps. Just speculation.
Interesting theory!
it's a possible theory.
Before the release i imagined the contrary theory, like making little internal storage with high speed to allow high bitrate recording and use it as cache before write on low speed micro sd.
Micro sd have very low speed compared to the speed of top end SD.
can be but very low chances getting 130mbps storage is not costly........
Good review. Was wondering if I could possibly get your DJI Lut becauce imo it looks nice and I just got myself the A5 Pro
Your video is the first one I have seen aboutthe bit rate, so that makes me even more confident in my decision.
bro should have wait for the insta360 ace pro 2
Yes I want H.264 back please, in my testing's the camera is great and in the right conditions a great image too. But my Action 4 looks equally as good with ND Filters and D-log currently, the only real step up is the battery life, better screens & the DJI Mic2 connection is so much better. I just get the feeling DJI are holding back on firmware for the Action 5 & the Neo.
In the DJI forum they said they'd provide a higher bitrate option in the next firmware update which is great news!
Im waiting for a update
thanks for the comparison with the pocket camera... this was just was I was looking for
Contemplating replacing my Hero 9 with an Action 5... I’ve got a Pocket 3 and a Mini 4 Pro, great products from DJI. But... I'm hesitating with the Action 5, I'll wait a few weeks before i decide! Thanks for the review 🙂
Or... just get the action 4 for now... wouldn't know when the updates for the action 5 gonna roll out.
Low bitrate should be tested not in the city, but for example, downhill on a bicycle in the forest, where there are a lot of small details that at low bitrate will merge into squares and mush
Yep, I am interested to see how this camera performs in more testing scenarios!
@@captureguide if there is such or similar test we will be very grateful
Give me quality over battery life anyday!!!
You should have shown the compression artifacts as proof to backup your claims!
Just add a high bitrate option, DJI.
Better bitrates are coming! DJI confirmed this the other day....hang in there!

I nearly purchased but the lower bitrate put me off totally… I am a GoPro buyer mainly but this year thought I might try the OA5 but decided to hold back… hopefully a firmware will fix this… less battery life makes more sense than lower bitrate!
I love having opinions on the other side of the spectrum, that 80MB/S is definitely concerning, I was looking to upgrade my Hero 11 to maybe Action 5 or Hero 13 that have 120mb/s
you should just install the gopro labs firmware, it allows you to customize the bitrate you desire, you can have it at 200Mb/s if you want.
@@bikingchupei2447 Interesting, I've heard about it but never dig more than that, any other cool stuff you can do?
The video quality looks excellent, I am certain there will be further improvements with new firmware updates.
So I guess to wait for Action 6 or new Hero 14 ?
DJI have responded and said they will provide a higher bit rate option in the next firmware update. We might get improvements in other areas, too.
I recommended two OA4 to a friend. He’s recording courses at home, rarely walking, so for him the performance indoors was important.

So would you recommend putting sharpness and noise reduction both at -2?
@@Mike_v_E it would depend on what you're doing, are you doing fast biking or simple vlogs? for vlogs you can leave it as it is. but its good to keep both at -1. all my cameras i keep noise reduction at the lowest. unless its low light and i truly need noise reduction. but not daytime.
"its only relevant in very fast motion" You're right, it's important for the action camera.!
Definitely! I guess we gearheads just enjoy obsessing over the tiniest details, even though they won't actually make any difference to our lives 😂
Can you turn off the front screen when recording. ?
Yes! You can either have both screens on, both off, or one on and the other off using the single screen preview option.
any chance for longer and low light comparison against pocket 3?
I am planning to do a more detailed comparison with the Pocket 3 soon!
Battery life and thermals prioritised over image quality. In many instances, the 4 looks better than the 5.
Do you have the 4 i would like to see the compare to dji pocket 3 d log as i was thinking of getting the pocket 3

Nice stability when you walked down the stairs at end of the video. Where can I get your DJI LUT?
it's the free lut that dji gives you
This is the official D-Log M to Rec. 709 LUT that you can download on the DJI website. I used the Pocket 3 one since they haven't got one for the Action 5 yet.
You should do the test with more motion to see if there is artifact
I have a camcorder that records UHD @ 200mbps in H265 so the thought of 80mbps makes me wince a little.
That crazy to think about 😂 When every camera is going up in mbit/s DJI decide to cut theirs in half.
I don't like on the Action 5 that they removed the option to keep the screen on all the time during recording. Max now is only 10 minutes. May return it all things considered and just buy another Action 4.
i think the new OLED screen makes DJI to limit it
Thanks, wasn't aware of that!
It is the official DJI D-Log M to Rec. 709 LUT available on the DJI website! I used the Pocket 3 one.
Thank you for this thoughtful first impression. I've been frustrated by the overly glowing reviews and the outright takedowns regarding the bitrate.

Best review out there
The normal color 10bit profile straight out of the 5 pro looks horrific.

Clever marketing by these companies, as with Apple et al, means people are convinced they must have the latest and supposedly greatest
It is generally mot the case
