Good question actually. Frankly for daylight riding I am delighted with my Gopro images, I run a dual cam setup with a B-roll backwards-facing 9 on my bars (due to risk of 9's "issues") and an A-roll 11 on my chestpack...quite rudimentary dual-cam stuff on Resolve then adding VIRB telemetry after the clips have all been glued together (despite what peeps say about VIRB not working with Maps anymore, it still works great if you just sync the cam and garmin device-starts...piece of cake). Looks killer! But I'm running the 4 and there seems to me to be very little reason to change to the 5pro. The improvements are notable, and the pro moniker well earned, but I am no pro, and the 4 is more than enough for my use case
Great camera, but the main issue for me is the sensor format. With the GoPro 8:7 format, I can use the same file to export 16:9 RUclips Video (in Wide, SW and HW) and vertical Instagram reels or to extract square pictures for my Instagram grid. You set the 8:7 format once in the camera and you forget it! And it would be nice if they have lens accessories like GoPro. For me, the Max Lens Mod 2 (now Ultrawide lens) on theGoPro 12 was a game changer in certain situations. But yes, is it probably worthy of its PRO badge, but in a different way.
Since I stick with landscapes for almost all of my content, 16:9 (or even 4:3, which is an option) is enough for my needs. 8:7 could definitely be handy if you like producing multiple form factors though!
Crazy how none of these Action 5 Pro reviews mention how DJI lowered the bitrate on this camera. The Action 4 had a max bitrate of 130 mbit/s. The Action 5 now has a max bitrate of 60 mbit/s in 4k 30 80 mbit/s in 4k 60 100 mbit/s in 4k 120 GoPro does 200 mbit/s when using GoPro Labs. I didn't mention it because I didn't notice it. 🙂 Bitrate is definitely correlated to quality to an extent, but I don't think it makes as much of a difference as you think by the time it is rendered, uploaded and compressed onto RUclips. It may very well make a difference on your computer monitor before all of those steps, but as a creator that isn't something I'm super concerned about. They've seem to have committed to adding a higher bitrate option in a future software release for what it's worth.
I’m returning my action 5 pro to best buy, bitrate is unacceptable specially when riding mtb or any bikes on road or trail, 50mbps on 4K 24fps really? All of these paid RUclipsrs are lying
I'm not paid to respond to comments, but I believe you're failing to think critically here. That's like saying "ugh, the canon R3 only has 24 megapixels, that's unacceptable". Yes, bitrate is important, and yes, higher could be better, but it is far from a dealbreaker as-is. I've consistently pulled sharper frames from this camera compared to a Hero 13 Black.
Is it just me but the colors on this video looks too flat, not enough contrast, maybe you bumped the shadow slider because was too dark? I love my OA4 and OA5 seems better overall.
Yeah it looks awful to me, like it's overcompensating for low light. I'm seeing a lot of jittering and loss of detail as well. Looks a little bit better around 12:00 with some sunlight. Weird because Dale's OA4 videos looked about as good as action cameras get.
The flatness you see is just a result of my amateur colour grading abilities haha. I suspect that due to the increased dynamic range, the footage looks *even flatter* before grading, so I'll need to add in even more contrast next time. Easy fix, blame me. 😆 (but I appreciate the feedback too!)
@@DaleStone Got it! So this was shot on D log M right? I usually want to film in D log M but it tends to underexpose and it gets too dark on some areas. It would be much appreciated if you can make a video comparison 4 vs.5. I want to see it on trails not vlogging bullshit in the city. :))
@@nufobiketrip yeah this was all filmed with the DLog-M 10 bit mode. Ungraded it does appear "underexposed", but that's just how log footage works! With an extreme dynamic range, shadow recovery is made very easy, whereas you can't bring out any detail in overexposed sections of the image. 🤓
@@JTube571 Well i personaly really like all the new GoPro features but yeah my friend has the Action 4 and its pretty good and i have the hero 10 i dont like how his footage looks very cold and blue also its quite mushy but thats probably just his settings
@@KrissTheRider Has to be a settings thing. But ease of use features mean a lot to me besides image quality. GoPro can be the best at that but if their camera is overheating on me and shutting down every 10 minutes, it's of no use to me.
The only thing i look for in a action camera is if it shows steepness and size of features, the gopro actually just flattens everything and makes big jumps look like rollers and steep rolls look like a walk in the park. Is the action 5 better? Would love to see a comparision in steepness to the Gopro 13!
We need a comparison against the Ace Pro , the best at least until this came up. About the runtime: they say 4h but it seems the reality are 2.5h in 4K. Not bad though. And it has about 40 GB internal storage. It costs in Europe around 389€ with taxes (standalone), I have the insta 360 Ace Pro and it’s fabulous! Nothing to complain. I miss the HDR at 4K60 though…
Potatojet validated that the 4 hour runtime was accurate when filming at the prescribed 1080p, but stabilized 4k for ~170 minutes is definitely not bad either, haha. I believe it has 47GB, and my EU pricing was just a direct conversion from the USD pricing I was provided. 🙂
I love gopro, and I think this is the first time gopro falls significantly far behind. I don't think gopro labs is enough to make me stay with them. Still don't like the noise reduction and color science in all DJI devices, but it's all compressed to hell on youtube anyway.
I think DJI has been ahead of GoPro in terms of the user experience for a few years now, but I agree that now the choice has become clearer from the viewer side of things too. It is a shame that RUclips compresses the heck out of fast POV footage though, haha.
DJI has been in front for a while now. And their cameras don't have nearly as much overheating issues. Also, the quick record button is leagues faster on the Action 4/5. Both are huge considerations for me.
i literally just bought the A4 couple months ago...not knowing A5 would be released...good thing is that the A5 battery can be used on the A4...I just received an update from DJi on my A4 regarding the use of that battery, only issue is I cannot buy it yet separately in my country
¡¡What a great video and content!! I have a question... , I usually record mtb videos in high or low light conditions, where the action 3 image gets too dark at times, do you recommend I make the change to the action 5? Will you make a video comparing the image of the last 3 cameras? I have searched on RUclips, but I did not find any videos that include the action 3 in the comparison.
And this is what I've been waiting for. The GoPro 13 is such a disappointment. Question does the lens cover come off easily? Just in case you need to replace it or used a filtered lens cover.
Nice video Dale but i still love GoPro 12 and 13 as i have now. I respect you and your opinion and your rides. I saw you in Whistler but i am shy to approach you 😂😂😂to take selfie. Anyways keep it up and take care of all your rides.
The only problem with this camera is that it requires you to connect to the manufacturer's app on a smart phone. I find that not acceptable for any device other than an actual telephone.
@DaleStone I think so too. But I am easly confused by some Marketing people. I think I will try your settings, I think for MTB riding this should Work Out fine.
Haha install their app by side loading on Android because they don't want to adhere to security restrictions. Yeah they can install anything they want on your phone and then keep their app running in the background even after you close it.
4:35 Weird pulsating artifact. I've seen this on another DJI Osmo Action 5 PRO video. What's causing this? How can it be fixed? It seems to happen in low light situations with bright lights or in this case the sun behind the trees. But it was quite subtle in this video. But worse in a urban setting.
It's the stabilization working overtime and catching some of the lens vignetting from the extreme edge of the frame. It's impressive that the footage is so stable, and this is just a side effect of that.
Yup me too. Sent back an Action 4 last week because of it. Not a bad cam but no way I'm sideloading some Chinese app that refuses to respect Play Store rules. Bought a Gopro 11 for $360 CAD to replace my 9 with all its bluetooth connectivity issues, hopefully it'll be a winner. The image quality is frankly the same on all these cams anyway, at least in daylight.
In bright, evenly lit scenes, I agree they're all similar enough that it doesn't matter. It then comes down to the user experience and "fringe cases" where the lighting is dim or patchy (which mountain biking has a lot of), and I think DJI takes the win pretty easily here, especially UX. I share your concern with the app though, which is why I mentioned it in the video. 🙂
@@DaleStone It would be interesting if security experts investigated the app. But still even if it was safe, and they did, another update could come make it spyware, a keylogger or other malware.
I refunded mine. The video quality was pretty bad. They might fix it in the future but im not risking it. (I am not gopro fan I've never had gopro. This dji was my first and maybe last action camera.) For this price I prefer older DSLR. (I needed it just for timelapses)
@@DaleStone I needed it to make timelapses on my 3D printer. It was going to work if the video quality was not that bad. They might fix it with software updates. At least the build quality was great. The buttons are a little bit too hard but I guess its normal for action camera, otherwise you might press them by mistake. The two oled screens are good too. I just didn't wanted to risk it and refunded it to make sure I won't throw my money for a product that does not satisfy my needs.
Keeping an eye on this too - my partner and I have a 4 and love it; and have been considering a second camera for when we ride together. The original plan was getting a discounted 4 (or 3) when the 5 came out; but maybe the 5 is worth? 👀
@@AlexGelinas42069 I have a Osmo Action 4, and I think saving the extra money is worth it. From what I've seen the footage looks pretty similar. But the main thing is the much better battery life which does look interesting.
@@AlexGelinas42069 I've got the 3 as my first action camera, and it's been great. Definitely worth it for how cheap it is right now. I'm thinking about the 5 now to get second angles on stuff but really the 3 is so good I don't need an upgrade.
In the past I've always recommended buying a new camera every other upgrade cycle. That's what I did with my GoPros before: 6 -> 8 -> 10. And this is the first time my advice doesn't follow that rule. Keep in mind that making videos is literally my job, and the demands I place on my gear reflect that, but my honest recommendations are: - If you have anything older than the 3, consider the 5 adventure combo. - If you have a monetized channel and/or rely on your gear to capture high quality footage, consider the 5 adventure combo (or standalone camera, if you have a 3 or 4 adventure combo already). - If you are a hobbyist who typically shoots in nice, even lighting and don't need the "best of the best", the 4 is still a fantastic camera. Hopefully that clears things up!
Great review but I feel like on clips that are shown in the video the footage looks worse than on OA4. Not that much color + it felt like I was watching something in low res compared to other videos, idk if it's youtube's fault or what but it didn't look great. 8:33 It looks like there's some weird "fog filter" applied?
I believe that time stamp in particular was used to show how well the camera can capture data in low light scenarios. It doesn't look very nice as you say, but its far from "unuseable" data that some other cameras would have captured in that same scenario. Maybe Dale can comment here on that
Just my opinion, but... I still see no reason to update from my Hero 9! The 155-degree FOV is not enough to me, plus I'd like to use the most stabilization possible. From what I've seen, DJI is still behind GoPro when it comes to stabilization. You can see almost constant EIS jitters in this video, and I've noticed that in other Action videos as well.
I definitely prefer DJI's stabilization to GoPro's. It rolls the camera in corners which feels way more natural and "FPV". I believe what you're referring to has nothing to do with the EIS, but rather the camera getting bumped or vibrated while recording a video frame, a symptom of a slow shutter speed and a rigid mount, rather than the stabilization algorithm. 🙂
@@DaleStone yes, that is the EIS. If it's a small bump, it should be able to smooth it out without any evidence in the video. I do suspect the low light of your woods there has an effect, as well. GoPro's do this too, but I've seen it far more often in Osmo Action videos than I have from GoPro's. It has to be a significant jarring, or very low light for even my Hero 9 to do it, and they at least claim the Hypersmooth got better in later versions. But I still feel like I get good results from my Hero 9. I'm not hating on DJI, either, I've owned 3 of their drones, and ever since the first Osmo Action I've wanted it to be better than GoPro, and I do feel the image quality is better. Rocksteady + might be as good as Hypersmooth boost, but they need a wider FOV so that even when it crops, it's still wide enough.
DJI has better mounting system, longer battery life, doesn't overheat nearly as much as GoPro, and has several usability features that can't be beat. Like saving multiple settings profiles that you can quickly change to with the press of a button, MUCH faster on time for quick recording, and dual touch screens.
@@JTube571 most of that isn't really of any concern for me. I rarely use the GoPro for anything other than mountain biking, so it just stays on the chest mount, stays on the same settings, and since I only record the downhill, battery life isn't an issue (I only use like 30% of the battery for a typical DH). Also I must have gotten lucky with my Hero 9, because I've never had any overheating issues. I'm not really sure what it would take for me to upgrade, but so far with all of the action cams that have come out since the Hero 9, I haven't found any of it to be enough to upgrade. If you own no action cam and are looking to buy one today, that would be another story.
If the 13 is anything like their older models, and the Action 5 is as reliable as the previous models, the 13 will be complete garbage in comparison to the Action 5 just for reliability. I have an Action 3, but all of my friends have Gopros. I always get the clip I want, but my friends are always having issues.
GoPro will always have the edge on brand recognition, but I believe that DJI makes the superior product, especially when it comes to user experience (and lack of subscriptions...).
@@DaleStone : It depends on what you want to do with your action camera. GoPro has a much better user experience if you need to publish in different formats/ratios on social media : with their 8:7 sensor, it’s a lot faster and easier to do that! And yes, GoPro has a subscription model, but you really don’t need to subscribe to use all the pro-features of your GoPro camera, and I'm sure you know that. But it would be nice to show DJI colors out of the box (no DLOG, no color grading) in another video! 🙂
@@PumpUpTheTrack I agree that the 8:7 sensor is a nice feature for better vertical content, but my channel has blown up on shorts posted from 16:9 landscape footage. 🙂 I'll see if I can get the raw colours in the next A5PRO video!
@@DaleStone I can clearly see what he means, it's not the typical shaky footage, it's pulsating. and change exposure in certain spots it seems. Check out the video by Jo's Talking, this gets worse in the night city walk he did. It goes crazy.
@@mtbboy1993 it's probably the lens vignette that's present on the edges of the sensor because the stabilization is working overtime in a harsh test (and having to use the entire sensor).

I just watched this on a tv. Not even a very big one at that (just 43") and the footage is shaky. On a phone it looks fine obviously because phone is smaller, but I'm honestly surprised on the quality. Way too soft and shaky.

@@DaleStone I find that pov is far more immersive when the bars are in the frame as well as the terrain you’re reacting to and this fov seems to cut that off a lot over rough sections of trail. It’s nice they have a 4:3 aspect to help with some reframing and increased trail perspective but GoPro introduced 4:3 in maybe the hero 4… like a decade ago and has upgraded it to an even more flexible 8:7. Unfortunately the wide angle lens mods seem to have a pretty awful looking distortion in the corners and you lose the ability to run an ND filter to drag the shutter which is one of the main reasons to run a standard action camera. The 360 reframed still seems to win in any situation that you need both vertical and horizontal framing with immersive fov
@@brookscurran : The 8:7 format is effectively a big advantage on the GoPro side. You can be a way more productive, using the same file to export a 16:9 RUclips video and vertical Instagram reel or to extract square pictures for your Instagram account. And the ultrawide lens, for me, is really a good compromise if you don't want to go 360. It's really impressive (with the horizontal lock on) when you ride big berms.
Note that DJI does not have an app in the play store! This is a HUGE red flag, and a big security risk. If you want to activate the camera you are required to sideload an android APK on to your phone. None of the sponsored content will highlight how big a security risk this is.
I'm not going to pretend to have the qualifications needed to explain the exact security risks at play here, but I believe it was my duty to mention this specific concern in my video (as I did). I share your concern. 🙂

Great review and enjoy your small commission.
Looks like the GoPro 13 has some new competition
👀👀
DJI has been on top since the Action 4 was released, IMO.
@@JTube571 makes perfect sense, i agree the dji is easier to work with
I upgraded my hero 5 blk with the OA5 Pro.
Might be time to ditch my OA3 👀
The OA3 is still one of my favourite cameras, but the 5 is indeed better... 😉
The only thing i look for in a action camera is if it shows steepness and size of features, the gopro actually just flattens everything and makes big jumps look like rollers and steep rolls look like a walk in the park. Is the action 5 better? Would love to see a comparision in steepness to the Gopro 13!
would love to see a comparison with the Hero13, seems promising
coming soon! 👀
what is the Eagle mountain trail that you said, "this trail is so much fun" looks awesome
Mossom Creek!
We need a comparison against the Ace Pro , the best at least until this came up. About the runtime: they say 4h but it seems the reality are 2.5h in 4K. Not bad though. And it has about 40 GB internal storage. It costs in Europe around 389€ with taxes (standalone),
I have the insta 360 Ace Pro and it’s fabulous!
Nice MTB skills.
Thanks! 🙂
Just in case you need to replace it or used a filtered lens cover.
yes, it unscews easily just like Action 4
@@_petre that's good to hear
Nice video Dale but i still love GoPro 12 and 13 as i have now. I respect you and your opinion and your rides. I saw you in Whistler but i am shy to approach you 😂😂😂to take selfie. Anyways keep it up and take care of all your rides.
The only problem with this camera is that it requires you to connect to the manufacturer's app on a smart phone. I find that not acceptable for any device other than an actual telephone.
I agree, but that is unfortunately the norm amongst the main action camera brands!
Hey Dale, thanks for the Video! I Just bought the Osmo Action 5 and I have a question, do you use ND Filter? If yes, do you Change your settings?
I have not, I find forests dark enough already. 🙂
@DaleStone I think so too. But I am easly confused by some Marketing people. I think I will try your settings, I think for MTB riding this should Work Out fine.
Is that a tease for an upcoming Whole Enchilada video I see?
I wish. 😅
7,500 freedoms! 😂
so would be good to see this compared to the gopro 13
coming shortly... 👀
Can we do live streaming in this cam ?
I believe so, but that's not something that I've ever done so I didn't specifically test or cover that. Hopefully yes!
Haha install their app by side loading on Android because they don't want to adhere to security restrictions. Yeah they can install anything they want on your phone and then keep their app running in the background even after you close it.
How do you overlay data (power, speed, hr… ) from garmin edge cycling computer?
Not 100% sure as I don't use the overlays myself.
Only thing holding me back is having to sideload the app
We're tracked in so many ways and through so many apps and programs these days, not like it's much different than the others.
@@DaleStone It would be interesting if security experts investigated the app. But still even if it was safe, and they did, another update could come make it spyware, a keylogger or other malware.
The Mimo app is available thru the galaxy store which is on my Samsung s24 ultra ...no need to sideload
I refunded mine. The video quality was pretty bad. They might fix it in the future but im not risking it. (I am not gopro fan I've never had gopro. This dji was my first and maybe last action camera.) For this price I prefer older DSLR. (I needed it just for timelapses)
It sounds like you're not the target audience for action cameras in general if a DSLR suits your needs. Which is fine!
Very logical, and I agree. 🙂
And main question is, is it worth to upgrade from 4 to 5?
Keeping an eye on this too - my partner and I have a 4 and love it; and have been considering a second camera for when we ride together. The original plan was getting a discounted 4 (or 3) when the 5 came out; but maybe the 5 is worth? 👀
@@AlexGelinas42069 I have a Osmo Action 4, and I think saving the extra money is worth it. From what I've seen the footage looks pretty similar. But the main thing is the much better battery life which does look interesting.
Not for me. The improvements are pro oriented and wont make enough of a difference to me to justify the upgrade.
Keep in mind that making videos is literally my job, and the demands I place on my gear reflect that, but my honest recommendations are:
- If you have anything older than the 3, consider the 5 adventure combo.
Maybe Dale can comment here on that
@@viperrules24 Might be but the conditions didn’t look terrible, this happened in few different clips as well.
Do it have a 360 view?
Weird title .....Go Pro already made their move.
that's... a thumbnail 👉👉
And......they failed.
I have the 3 and 4 and love them.
How can i record in 16:9 in this Osmo 5 pro and upload it in 2:1 ratio ? Please let me know 😢
Please increase the contrast the test footage looks so grey like it is still d-log
yes boss
Really 🤦 I just got a Action 4 last week and I see this now, lol
I'm sure you got a great deal! It's still a fantastic camera and I honestly wouldn't think twice. 🙂
4K 30p @ 60Mbit HEVC != PRO
Although bitrate is definitely important, the resulting footage is what really matters, and I've been happy with it.
go pro 13 still the clear winner
4:23 why picture are shaking? there no stabilization?
Looks extremely stable to me
@@DaleStone I can clearly see what he means, it's not the typical shaky footage, it's pulsating. and change exposure in certain spots it seems. Check out the video by Jo's Talking, this gets worse in the night city walk he did. It goes crazy.
@@mtbboy1993 it's probably the lens vignette that's present on the edges of the sensor because the stabilization is working overtime in a harsh test (and having to use the entire sensor).
wrong it isnt 314. sadly it is 379 here in EU
DJI only provided USD pricing, so I did my best. 🫡
its 350 in the USA !!! official website standard edition...in Mexico where I live its the same price as the Action 4 also 350 USD
Too bad it doesn't have GPS anymore
I always found GPS overlays to be pretty tacky myself, but I appreciate that other user groups may miss that feature.
@@DaleStone i mainly miss it for geotagging pictures. Hiking or riding out in the wild, it's nice to track the location of the photos i take, sometimes even necessary. I know it's not a photo camera, but it was a great feature in older models
I'd not thought of that, that is pretty nice!
I just watched this on a tv. Not even a very big one at that (just 43") and the footage is shaky. On a phone it looks fine obviously because phone is smaller, but I'm honestly surprised on the quality. Way too soft and shaky.
If you've enjoyed my videos over the past few months, this camera is better than that one. I just got very unlucky with dim/cloudy conditions on the week before this camera's release. 😆
@@DaleStone i actually have been enjoying your videos for years (ds/dd fan here) 🙂 just for the heck of it, I even re-watched your osmo 4 video and it was less shaky tbh 🙅♂️
what really? your video footage looks blurry. But i admit stabilizing the footage looks great.
It doesn't look blurry to me, quite a bit sharper than the new GoPro side by side. 🙂
@@DaleStone clip when you are talking looks superb, but shots taken while you are riding your bike looks whitish..
That's my colour correction, and I'm definitely still learning haha.
Does anyone else have problems with their chin mount constantly hitting their chest?
I tried that setup for a while and it did for me... I did get used to it after a few rides though
I agree, I also found that I got used to it and it's no longer something I think about.
Fov looks too narrow for bike pov
Agree to disagree on that one, haha. This is the widest you can get without going 360 or a lens accessory.
You are a huge red flag for using android.
@@JohnnyThe_G how mature. You don't realize how easy it is to take full control of a phone when sideloading apps.
I'm not going to pretend to have the qualifications needed to explain the exact security risks at play here, but I believe it was my duty to mention this specific concern in my video (as I did). I share your concern. 🙂
@@DaleStone thank you for mentioning it at all. Many do not
