I've learned a lot of history of the Fox Bodies, and I hope to found one real soon.
I have had both hatchbacks and notchbacks and done hundreds of runs at the track I feel like that hatchbacks hookup a lot better for launching the car off the line. The notchbacks they are of course lighter so a little bit faster but if you are spinning the tires because you can't hookup it doesn't really matter if you are that slight bit faster. I have had identical mods on both my cars and the hatch was slightly better 60 foot with mickey thompson ET streets on both cars. I feel like the overall package of having a hatchback makes it more desirable in my opinion.
The 25th anniversary pony on the dash started in April of 1989 , it had a running pony with the writing “ 25th anniversary “ it lasted for approx 7 months , then every mustang until the end of production had the running pony with out the script.
I noticed something you do but I don't think you've talked about. The trick of putting your thumb on & pressing the outer door handle to help keep it from breaking.
Great video of information, It takes me back, had a 85 GT,and later had a 92 5.0 LX with the factory sunroof, really loved that car.Seeing all these foxbodies takes me back, always love all your videos,Keep up the great work.
Bought myself a brand new 90 LX 5.0 Hatchback when I was 19 years old after saving up for 3 years plowing snow. 13.4k. off the lot. Still wish I had it. Your commentary is spot on showing the differences on years, models etc.
My favorite car was seeing a 1990 hatch. I love them and was one of my fav 5.0 hatches. With ground effects lol. As I’m typing this I see you talking about my fav body style
I miss my first Mustang GT 5.0!!! I'm on PONY #5 now... 87' GT 5.0 automatic, 89' 4 Cylinder (so good on fuel), 02' GT 4.6 stick shift, 05' 6 Cylinder, and now an 01 GT 4.6 convertible (stick shift)...
I cant wait to start my project car. My mother own 89 5.0 LX notchback, it what I learn to drive in. She still has the car and I am getting off her. In the late 90 she wrecked it, so I'm rebuilding as a Saleen Clone.
I remember back in the day nearly everyone wanted a GT and the notchbacks were almost the red headed step child. A lot of people regarded the notchback as a fairmont and ugly. It was the very late 90’s - early 00’s the notchbacks became highly sought after. Good luck Finding a clean 5.0 notchback now that’s as reasonably priced as a comparable condition GT.
The map/dome lights changed in 92. The scope light and basic dome light was thru 91. The combination light (map and dome) was for 92 and 93. Fun fact - those later lights have the same screw pattern as the slimmer dome/map light in some of Ford’s other cars like the SN95 Mustang and the 97-03 F150.
The Map light was replaced in 1992, but 1991 models built after the first week of August had there map lights removed and replaced with the same dual functioning headlight/map light as the 1992 model. Most Foxbody mustangs built around August were a mix of parts from the current year and the new coming year.
The year was 1993 and I had an ‘86 LX Vert, I was able to get my hands on ‘93 GT bumpers and ground effects so I swapped out the old 4 eyes, at the time she looked great. Fast forward 27 years and 1, I wish I still had that car and 2, I was stupid for getting rid of those now desirable 4 eyes 😎
SVOs and saleens had 5 lug, as well as some of the other super rare foxes like the ssac. 86 was the first year with fuel injection but was still a 4 eye so 86-88 were speed density. Telling the difference between the 4 eye mustang's gt/lx is a whole different episode. Also the front fenders were different sizes to accommodate the larger 16/17" wheels when they went to them

Thanks for this video! I live in Norway, and just bought back the 1987 LX 2,5 my mother imported from the us. Not a big fox body community here so I try to learn what I can from RUclips. The previous owners kept it in a good condition, and installed a thunderbird engine and a turbo after the original motor was beyond salvage. Due to tax laws they did not upgrade the engine to something more powerful. But I’m trying to learn how to make the best out of it! 😊
Cheers, picked up a 93 GT convertible white with gray interior 99% stock. My graduation year, always wanted one. Beautiful shape. But need to learn more about it then it's a beautiful car by looking at it. Some good info here.. pretty novice at cars

I have a LX hatch back and I love the car. It was my grandpas and the story behind it was it was a Oklahoma state trooper patrol car that was rolled and fixed by a little dealer ship. Pretty much making it look like a factory car made for civilians. I’m just now starting to make and save money and I’m getting ready to order the clutch quadrant and fuel system and make it run and drive it as I fix it up as I go. It’s kinda rough but it’s nothing I’m afraid of fixing on my own
A little tidbit I bought my Gt new in 1987 and I saw in a magazine article back in the day that Ford was going to put lights under the dash to light up the floorboards. They decided not to but some came from the factory with the light sockets. Sure enough mine had them and I put the bulbs in and they worked. Lit up both floorboard when you opened the door.
Significant things you missed: 91-93 have different front fender wheel arches to fit the larger 16” wheels, 93 motors got hypereutectic cast pistons (including cobras) vs previous forged pistons - a lot of blown up supercharged 93s, 87-88 cars had a hotter cam and 3-5 more bhp, interior molds were changed for the dash/switches with darker black plastics as part of the cost reduction to offset the airbag cost, dash knee pads added in 90+, 25 year dash pony logo added in 89.
We used to call the map lights dope scopes. I'm typing half way through the video, but there was something with the fenders that was different through the years

loved this video man! made me realize a few things I didn't know. I didn't know I a sought after interior for one. I thought it was basic but thank you for the insight and keep up the great work!
In 1987, the LX 5.0 was still the base seats. Funny, but in 1990 you could option any LX, 4 cylinder included, the GT "Appearance Package" even on a notch. 2.3 with GT Ground Effects. Looked hilarious
nice video. as someone else pointed out, the front fender spats are different 91-93. although not a visual, the forged pistons went away in 92 i believe. 92-93 lx cars have body color trim.
differences in interior from 1987-89 "in stock form". 1987 - Has a 88mph speedo 1988 - Has a 140mph speedo 1989 - Has an 25th Anniversary Plaque (mid year) on the dash at the passenger side. Hope this helps...
I had a 90 conv GT and always wanted a console 🤷🏼♂️ never knew most didn’t have one. And the 8.8 that was in my car was probably the best one ever because well... oh boy 😏 I also worked at a tire shop. Always a good slayer combo!! Damn well miss mine. 🤔 I really like the coyotes in the fox body though, must be a blast to drive!
Funny feeling when 30 years later, a legendary car is almost forgotten in pop culture. When these cars were 10 years old people were removing lx badges because people were already confused as to what was what. Bought mine at that time with badges removed and it caused people to at least ask if it was “a real 5.0”...lol. This year I bought the lx badge and put it back on and instantly someone said “your car is nice, too bad it’s not a GT”... 🙄
I had a '90 5.0 LX hatch with a moonroof and custom ground effects. I liked the fact it didn't look like the common GT of the day and was just as fast :) I have to admit though, I think my 2015 Mustang GT is a much better car but I miss the '90 foxbody
The way power was calculated wasn’t changed for 93. The camshaft installed in the 5.0 HO was changed slightly throughout the years starting in 1989. Those changes effected the horsepower output of the engine which culminated in a lower horsepower rating for the 1993 model year.
I had a 93' GT with the "much coveted" black interior, but it's seats also had the knee bolsters, so there must have been exceptions. My power window controls were on the console, as opposed to the car shown with them on the doors.
There was a US Federal law limiting speedometers to read only up to 85 mph. That restriction was lifted. In my 79 Mustang Indy Pace Car 5.0 4 speed the speedometer needle didn’t have anything physical keeping it from turning 360 degrees from 0. I had it up to 115 twice. First owner said that it could go 130 mph.
1st Car I'd get is a hatchback gt in Magnesium brown(dark grey/brown clove metallic) w/ titanium ground effects. Emerald Green GT w/titanium effects will do just fine too. Dark Titanium with real Titanium effects are sweet too. Dream Cars. Couple streets down from my house there's a 92 green gt. It will be mine
One of the best kept secrets isn't the difference between LX/GT. It's that many components of fox chassis and dash were the same size as other Ford cars. I took a crashed 86 GT and swaped it into a 79 Futura. Dash gauges, engine and trans... made the car Ford should have produced.
"Sport Seats" were 87-89 only. Having the tallest of seats, movable large headrests and thigh bolsters. Also GT's are the only fox body that have "cheese grater" rear lights. I think 87-89 are the best years. Have had many foxes 82 Capri 84 6cyl vert 91 Notch 88 GT vert 89 GT hatch current and favorite of all. (have a vid on my channel)
I want a set of cheese graters so bad I’m 20 and I’ve owned 5 foxes and it’s been 3 lxs a gt350 which was before graters and a gt that had been swapped to different lights
I thought they only made one fox body 1986 t top 5.0 5 speed son give it to me 15 years ago and has 99000 miles and still all original and runs great , Mopar man but this little guy will still Go. They will grow on you.👍
I own a 91 2.3 LX Hatchback. after watching this video, can confirm Previous owner did a good freaking job on doing a trim and interior swap to the GT. If you didn't confirm the VIN number, you would honestly think someone swapped a 2.3 onto a GT
The ash tray cover never stays shut . They had a flashlight in the 80s near the rearview mirror . The Canadian build gt mustang said gt / cobra on the title for reason.
I have a light blue 92 mustang notchback lx 5.0. I got it back in 1998 for my first car in high school. It is still original no motor work only put 373 gears. I am thinking about doing 303 or 306 motor upgrade
Had a 92 lx 4 banger that looked like a gt..it was funny for a bit when people would pipe you up then the expression on there face when they heard the old 2300 rev like a banshee..you know they are thinking something don't sound right
They also had an LX 5.0 . You can tell by the red dot if it had an H.O 5.0 in either the GT or the LX but I believe all LX 5.0 where H.O. The 87 H.O Lx had Holley Carb. Edelbrock intake. Headers
I am a Chevrolet man, I own a 1987 LX Mustang cause, even I can admit, you cannot beat them! I was going to put all GM running gear in it but instead build a solid roller cam 347 with a C4, 4000 stall converter, built the 8.8 with 4:10's in it, it is a complete animal show on the street! Everytime I take it out, there will be someone up my ass but when I am driving, shift it in second and it is spinning the tires and they can't catch up, they let off pretty fast.
Sgree with 9 out of 10... But I have to say, I actually always liked the look of a notch with GT ground effects. The GT convertible is basically similiar look.
Now caleb on the 1982 GT it didnt have the full wraparound body effects kit on it. It just had the front and rear bumpers covers that told it was a GT.
My first fox was an 87 2 tone blue gt. Then a rare 93 gt 5 speed reef blue .and now black 89 . Unfortunately wrecked the 93 at over 100mph when someone came on the on ramp and came across 3 lanes of traffic and right in front of me. Everyone always has that I wrecked a fox body story.
I love the channel. Don't forget that the four cylinder and V8 LX's cars from 87 to 89 had the 85 mph speedometer. I've learned a lot of history of the Fox Bodies, and I hope to found one real soon.
Not true. 1989 LX 5.0 has the 140 speedometer.
The 1982 GT HAD A 85 MPH SPEEDO IN IT ALSO.
LX vert gang 👌🔥🧢💯my first car ever still own it
Same man just got mines recently
That's really cool!
A 1979 to 1986 foxbody differences episode is needed
87-89 = Tilt Steering Wheel
90-93 = Non Tilt Steering Wheel
Big option for a taller driver.
Got a 93 2 years ago. I thought Interesting that doesn't have tilt, when earlier models do.
Airbag started in 90, so it must have something to do with that.
I have had both hatchbacks and notchbacks and done hundreds of runs at the track I feel like that hatchbacks hookup a lot better for launching the car off the line. The 90 dashboard running pony also had 25th Anniversary in it.
And the 89s
I had one. Black on black...
Yep, 87 and 88 didn't have the dash emblem as far as I can remember.
The 25th anniversary pony on the dash started in April of 1989 , it had a running pony with the writing “ 25th anniversary “ it lasted for approx 7 months , then every mustang until the end of production had the running pony with out the script.
I have a ‘90 LX Hatch which is a 25th Anniversary car. Made 12/12/1989

The 87-89 seats have a taller back than the other GT and Sport Seats.
differences in interior from 1987-89 "in stock form".
1987 - Has a 88mph speedo
1988 - Has a 140mph speedo
1989 - Has an 25th Anniversary Plaque (mid year) on the dash at the passenger side.
Hope this helps...
89 was last year for 85 mph speedometer. 88 last year for t-tops. 93 had different cam and hypereutectic pistons.
Awesome. I'm new to fox body. I just got a lx convertible 4 cylinder. This was so interesting and helpful to know the difference. Thanks.
Great info here, 1 problem i see is that in most cases some jerk has switched out everything 🤫 to point they cant ever identify the body
awesome 👌🏻👌🏻 a video of one year only feature, options would be really cool too
Don’t forget the 91 & up front fenders were bigger wheel wells cuz of the the 16” pony wheels & 17” cobra wheels
Good stuff. Always learning through you guys!
The panel under the steering column is different as well. Flat from 87-89. 90 panel had a bump out
You can put 87-93 quarter glass in 79-86 you have to drill an extra hole for one of the glass studs to go through but fits right in after that
Funny feeling when 30 years later, a legendary car is almost forgotten in pop culture.
I definitely I know what I want now. A 92-93 GT or LX hatch.
I owned a lot of Camaros but I honestly been wanting a Mustang just don't know where to start if I went through with buying one
The more modern dome light came in 1992. The swiveling map light between the sun visors last year was 1992. Just helping you out there buddy.
The way power was calculated wasn’t changed for 93. The camshaft installed in the 5.0 HO was changed slightly throughout the years starting in 1989. Those changes effected the horsepower output of the engine which culminated in a lower horsepower rating for the 1993 model year.
Love the four eye.
85 and 86 gt had the nicest front seats
I consider myself pretty in tune with fox body cars, but this is great content!
Ps... I still to this day love me some chrome ponys. 🥰
I had a 93' GT with the "much coveted" black interior, but it's seats also had the knee bolsters, so there must have been exceptions. My power window controls were on the console, as opposed to the car shown with them on the doors.
Thanks professor
what a great explanation of fox body mustang. I have a 1985 coupe in the restoration process. It'll be a ripper :)
'87-'88, the Speedo was rated to 85 mph and '89-'93 had the 140 mph Speedo.
87 started at 5mph 88 started at 0mph also had a pin that stopped it
There was a US Federal law limiting speedometers to read only up to 85 mph. That restriction was lifted. In my 79 Mustang Indy Pace Car 5.0 4 speed the speedometer needle didn’t have anything physical keeping it from turning 360 degrees from 0. I had it up to 115 twice. First owner said that it could go 130 mph.
A SSP (Special Service Package), usually in notchback form in any of those years is especially desirable.
Goodlookin out OG , learned Alot
1st Car I'd get is a hatchback gt in Magnesium brown(dark grey/brown clove metallic) w/ titanium ground effects. Emerald Green GT w/titanium effects will do just fine too. Dark Titanium with real Titanium effects are sweet too. Dream Cars. Couple streets down from my house there's a 92 green gt. It will be mine
Thanks for the information I'd love to find a 90 through 93 LX 5.0
One of the best kept secrets isn't the difference between LX/GT. It's that many components of fox chassis and dash were the same size as other Ford cars. I took a crashed 86 GT and swaped it into a 79 Futura. Dash gauges, engine and trans... made the car Ford should have produced.
No joke I use to be able to look at key thing and tell what year it was by the features and never look at the ID sticker
Same, lots of clues to identify what year if they are mostly stock.
My ultimate favorite is my dads 93 notchback. My second favorite is AV Boys 89 Hatchback that my dad sold to them.
My favorite part of the 88 GT I had was the seat knee bolsters.
"Sport Seats" were 87-89 only.
Having the tallest of seats, movable large headrests and thigh bolsters.
Also GT's are the only fox body that have "cheese grater" rear lights.
I think 87-89 are the best years.
Have had many foxes
82 Capri
84 6cyl vert
91 Notch
88 GT vert
89 GT hatch current and favorite of all.
(have a vid on my channel)
The 🧀 graters though 👀 🔥 im 29 y.o and ive owned 6 foxbodies in my younglife . Still have a 92 GT drop 😤 great informative video!
I want a set of cheese graters so bad I’m 20 and I’ve owned 5 foxes and it’s been 3 lxs a gt350 which was before graters and a gt that had been swapped to different lights
Great video learn more new things about differences.
If you didn't confirm the VIN number, you would honestly think someone swapped a 2.3 onto a GT
you got a picture?
The ash tray cover never stays shut . They had a flashlight in the 80s near the rearview mirror . The Canadian build gt mustang said gt / cobra on the title for reason.
I have a light blue 92 mustang notchback lx 5.0. I got it back in 1998 for my first car in high school. It is still original no motor work only put 373 gears. I am thinking about doing 303 or 306 motor upgrade
Bro, I've had two foxbody 89 and 93 LX. My brother got LX with 347 stroker.
Great video a lot of great info thanks!!
Had a 92 lx 4 banger that looked like a gt..it was funny for a bit when people would pipe you up then the expression on there face when they heard the old 2300 rev like a banshee..you know they are thinking something don't sound right
Great info, however, it wasn’t until 1989 that the premium/GT interior was available on an LX with the V8.
Yo Caleb Have You Ever Worked On Any Fairmonts?
Interesting video , enjoyed
Sometimes early year built cars got the previous year parts. My 92 lx has seat leg bolsters but it was built in November 91
Great video. Forgot about the T-Tops though
Interesting and informative.
Sgree with 9 out of 10...
But I have to say, I actually always liked the look of a notch with GT ground effects. The GT convertible is basically similiar look.
Great video very informative
Now caleb on the 1982 GT it didnt have the full wraparound body effects kit on it. It just had the front and rear bumpers covers that told it was a GT.
I'm a 85 86 guy. I got 86 my brother got 85.
I just picked up a 5l 5speed 89 hatchback lx off my grandma for free, the drivers floor pan is rusted out but it’s an easy fix!
