After I left the forces, I really struggled to overcome my own negative character. I'd become hollowed out over the years, that I ended up severely distorting my ability to feel. I couldn't even smile or laugh, had no empathy towards anyone - including myself. It took 8 years to come overcome the defences I'd put up to deal with life. I remember crying for the first time at my mates grave, it was such an overwhelming experience I suddenly realised I'd been suffocating all these years. It felt like I'd started seeing the world in colour again, like I could taste and smell.

Dude, I’m in that miserable dark place now. I don’t see any bubbles or family and friends to tell me which way is up. Loneliness compounds my depression tremendously. Thanks, Shipmate lol. Listening to you helps. Pray for me and keep these videos coming, dude. You make more of a difference than you may know.
Best of luck to you, remember that your reality isn’t actual reality. If the sun is out enjoy it, if not, enjoy it. There’s oxygen in the air, and your heart is pumping blood. It’s just a phase. You got it
"Which way is up" is extremely helpful. I just realized I can't tell. I'm figuring out what "bubbles" are in my psychological space. I appreciate you men.
@Bruce S I am one of those height supremacists lol, but wtf does height have to do with this? Jocko is also 220lbs lean and a skilled fighter, so I wouldn’t consider him average by any means.
At the end of the day we just have to stay positive, its how we overcome hardship that defines us. Nothing is easy in this world. I love it, follow the bubbles and you will find the light, great analogy. It takes a monster to defeat a monster. Sometimes you gotta go to the darkside, but you cant let it corrupt you and never find the light again.
You guys are obviously very physically tough but I like that you discuss mental toughness. That can’t be achieved without admitting that as humans we have vulnerabilities. That’s reality. But another reality is our ability to mentally overcome them. As war fighters you learn to exploit human vulnerability in your enemies but the more you understand it the more you realize that you can also become a victim of it. There in lies the importance of perspective.I had a suicidal mother and lost a son to heroin addiction so I’ve seen the darkness. It’s taken some serious effort to not be consumed as well. I fight the war in my head every day but I’ve learned to survive. It’s like a wound but in my mind not my body. It heals but you can feel the scars.
I struggle with psychosis, which makes reality a difficult thing for me. One of the smartest people I know told me eyes work both ways, they don't just take in, but project out, and both are a different reality. The reality that your eyes take in is the shared reality, the one everyone experiences, but the one that projects outward is your reality. You have to learn to tell the difference, or your reality will consume you. What Jocko experienced with the water is pretty much my every day life when my mental health dips lol.
I know about Iris Chang. Read her book The Chinese In America which definitely helped me to understand Asian-American history. And definitely know about what happened to her. In any case, needed to listen to this today. Thanks Jocko.
This video can make some people extremely grateful if they took time to listen.... An extremely dark event in somebody’s past that changes their entire perception on life, value, and meaning can make you drown. But that’s it- nothing else will. The world is a beautiful place. Many people don’t realize that.
Knowing the monster is the only way to defeat it. So many lessons can be cite;Carl Jung, Jocko, Dr. Peterson, Aurelius, Alexander, Sun Tzu...We are monsters and we are Heroes. Keeping ourselves in touch is most important.
I always catch myself worrying about my grades (Currently a college student) and then that worry if I’m doing a good enough bleeds into my training and work. Then I get my grades and I always tell myself why am I being so hard on myself for? You’re a hard worker and the results will show is what I tell myself all the time. Then I get some relief but the cycle continues. I definitely have to put things in perspective sometimes and realize my situation is never as bad as it seems.

Good evening Jocko Willink, I hope this message finds you in good health and prosperity. I just wanted to ask you how one can feel secure in the sense that his or her surroundings are not a threat. For example, how can one balance situational awareness if hypervigilance is in ones nature. I hope you can assist me in this regard. Nothing but respect for you and i salute you
consider: reality is that which you observe without emotion. you are pulled out of reality the moment emotion takes hold of you. emotions, energy in motion, are indicators to the body, thus the consciousness, to pay attention to something. when such energy in motion is overwhelming, it's usually due to unresolved ability to manage one's self. again, an indicator of something to pay attention to.
I think having a positive or productive attitude is a habit which takes practice. Its also the reverse when stuck with a dark mindset which can take a lot of charecter to snap out of. Some realistic perspectives need to be in place to allow you to see why life usually isn't so bad. In some cases life may be that bad in which case it would take extreme fortitude to still be positive
3:20 NOT PANICKING is also important. If you're a pilot, and you can't see which way is up, your instruments will tell you. But you forget that if you're panicking. EDIT 3:40 Ah, he mentions "check your control panel". And yes, if you're diving, which way are the bubbles going? Exactly.

Perception isn’t reality. Perception is your brain interpreting what little information your senses give you. We know there’s a lot our senses can’t perceive with our senses. Look at X-rays. We can’t see X-rays, but we found a way to turn X-rays into something we can see.
