The internet is full of videos of Carlos saying that while a friend was experiencing a bad trip on mescaline, he played her the first part of the melody as it's going moving down the circle of fourths and supposedly he was singing the guitar melody "The mushroom lady's coming to town". Both are credited as writers. I feel that it was created to be played by guitar where the dynamics of your fingers, your vibrato, the bends, sustain, erc give the song that special unmatched sound that as soon as those first notes are coming through the loudspeakers you know! On a personal note, when I used to perform Europa live, I would always hear a sigh of pleasure, romance and sensation in the air. It was the reason I learned to play the guitar. Find a good guitar player that is able to perform this well, and take turns playing the opening riff, see who gets the best reactions.
