- Amazing guitar battle between Steve Vai and Dweezil Zappa, in the Zappa plays Zappa DVD concert. (And an awesome saxophone solo, performed by Scheila Gonzalez :)
This is the solo of "More Trouble Every Day", from Zappa. Видеоклипы
This is no battle.... it's a conversation... and a damn good one at that!
Someone else heard and understood it/that too. Good job👏
@Chango Chilemba and the title of this particular piece of music is *Don't You Dare Sweep Picking Before My Eyes*
I agree 100 times over, and this was amazing to see
Yea know??
TIRED of these KEYBOARD COWBOYS acting the know something those two don’t!!!
Well said
Dweezil has become a great guitarist in his own right. Frank is smiling.
Study of Frank's music which he only immersed himself in starting in 2005 is what has made him into a new man, a deep and searching artist. Frank's level of artistry when studied closely will do that to a guy, especially one who already has half his genes.
Agreed. Frank would be proud
Have a listen to Frank and Dweezil jamming to Whipping Post.
Frank is dead.
YESSS!!!!!
And the winner is.... the audience!! They got to hear it live!
Nobody can question that Vai is a pure technical master.
But...the tone and riffs of Dweezil on that freakin' SG were mind blowing and seemingly effortless.
i liked dweezil's playing better. i never suspected he was this awesome
@@jabbahursty
His guitar teacher was EVH...
Vai smoked him. You don't duel with the devil.. ;)
Vai's allegiance to Ibanez has always limited his tone. I totally agree that the SG and even the Les Paul sound so much better. I've never understood why Steve doesn't play different guitars to change up the tonal pallet. I remember reading that Frank very early on told Steve that his tone was for shit but his playing was great or something to that effect.
Dweezil is quite the technician himself.
I was in the audience. Almost in tears...
They played for almost 4 hours! And it kept getting better.
I was at that show, too. Roseland. If I remember correctly they did a couple “takes” of some the songs. Great show!
@@mattcasey3779 Definitely on the retakes. Definitely on the great show, too. I've seen ZPZ a few times since. All decent shows, none matched this.
(I saw Father Frank a few times in the mid-'70s to early '80s. Of course, missing from the ZPZ mix was Zappa's ego, attitude and stage presence. Dweezil is more demure; just a vessel. As it should be...)
tears from bleeding ear drums
@@alexhuevera939 LOL. Well, not in my case. Once they got things dialed in the sound was perfect: clean, clear, and loud. Rock concert loud. As it should be ;-)
The Pageant in St. Louis....I remember You couldn't even hear Terry until they dialed the sound in about an hour or so into the show and I remember when Steve did the whammy lick...it floored everybody !
Vai can shred his ass off, but when he held that one single note at 1:07 and it began to feedback into the stratosphere, THAT was the shit.
Sustainer pickup in the "FLO" guitar uses a battery to cause a magnetic feedback loop.
Yeah, that was the one part that I thought I could play! LOL!
Lol technology
@@KaosII1968 SUSTAINIAC ! Frank had an SG with one with variable controls on the sustain.
Can I say phrasing of Les Paul guy was amazing...Killed it
WHO IS HE

Fun fact: Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen were Dweezil's guitar teacher.
Dude his dad was Frank. Everyone cool was his guitar teacher. Vai played with his dad and EVH taught him how to play Eruption for his high school talent show. Lancaster was cool once.
Dweezil's a class act, like his dad.
Such an incredible bunch of musicians. The saxophonist blew me away.
I don’t see a “who’s better “ in this scenario.... I see a bunch of talent on the stage, working together to make it sound amazing.
I respect Vai, incredible musician! For most of the "turns" each took at soloing I enjoyed Zappa's note choice more so than Vai's. There was more flavor in terms of note choices and modes, not to mention more character in his phrases.
It's called "Different Styles" of guitar playing. Or, if you like, "Different Strokes for Different Folks." Can you even imagine what it would be like if everyone on the Earth were equal in abilities and sensibilities? Dissonance is the spice of life!
Not to mention he's using his father's equipment and tunings... Steve was in Juilliard when Frank offered him a job. Big difference...
Absolutely
Vai actually kind of sucks. His tone is aweful, and his playing empty
@@Illumignostic if he sucked then every guitarist would out play him and that’s really not the reality. It’s a very select few who actually can play better than Vai, even now when he’s getting on in age and is a touch slower than he used to be he’s better that 99.99% of guitarists
Dude Vai is like hitting every string as fast and loud as he can..........Dweezil is just like chilling in the sixties man....so cool.
Looks like two good friends having a good time entertaining folks. It's everyone else making it a "battle"
Well said!
Its kind of a battle tho. And there's nothing wrong about it.
@@Xabi_MM seemed more like a conversation / discussion to me
Dweezil has a cool guitar sound... And crazy clever licks
Legend has it that they are still dueling at this hour.
the saxophone won this guitar duel
Yeah, the best Kenny G solo I've ever seen.
TonyCook yup anyone who disagrees is a moron.
Jao Lin wait until you hear it
Her name is Sheila Gonzalez and she is one of the longest running members in Dweezil's band. Shes AMAZING, she plays the Sax, Flute, Keys and sings too. She's hilarious and she's fucking gorgeous. I've seen Dweezil 7 times and she is one of the reasons I spend the entire show with my jaw on the ground.
too much
Zappa wins in the tone department by a mile.
Agreed. Is he playing that Cornford amp? Perhaps an RK100?
That’s true. That funny how that is. It’s in the hmds
I saw a rig rundown vid of Dweezil and the dude has more pedals and multiple amps in his setup than anyone I've ever seen. There's a rack(s) with drawers of pedals and multiple heads. And his guitar tech has to switch all of them like crazy to have the right settings. The interviewer asked him how he keeps everything straight for the setting for all the songs and he said, I don't. My guitar tech does.
@@Relayer6a seeing him live is wild for many reasons, one of which being that he keeps like six pedals in front of him and uses them all the time
licks are more fun too
steve thinks he’s dueling Ralph Macchio
Sweep the 'peggio!
He got the same result.
Vai pushes the limit and so did Frank
Steve vai is not acting like he wants to win!! Its called two friends having fun at a concert together. Lol it's not to see who is the best! Watch all the songs. Its friends
At first I didn't register... And then remembered one of my favorite scenes in one of my childhood favorite movies.
Yeah, but can you play it on a bicycle?
Came here for the video stayed to comment for the Rowsdower
#Steve Allen
Are you bills guy?
That's very hard and there are no olympic medals to be won...
What is the bicycle color ?
Damn Dweezil that SG tone is outstanding man!!!! Love your style man😎🎸😎
I agree. Vai's tone sounds repetitive and whiny
VAI is such a talented man!! He has amazing expression in every note!! Beautiful!
It is such a pleasure reveling in this mash-up of talent. Wow!
bombastic show, wonderful chemistry, supercharged atmosphere, love it, thanks !
The 3rd gtr is Jamie Kime.
thanks!
Thank you! Came down here fishing for that
Thanks, was surprised he wasn't billed, didn't seem fair, he was terrific.
Steve Vai sounds like a machine. Dweezil sounds like a passionate human being.
That's the difference.
Steve Vai sounds like a passionate machine
I had the privilege of seeing this tour. It was amazing, and Frank would've been so proud of his son, and Steve too!
There is nothing better than sitting back and listening to this type of music
I love how versatile Dweezil is, his playing really sounds like a mix of his dad’s and just when anyone starts thinking like oh damn he sure plays similarly the guy’s capable of busting out full 80s styled blitzy licks (and I mean hey he’s best mates with Warren Demartini I’m sure the two learned a lot of each other as well as Dweezil and Steve)
Steve vai has one of the greatest attitudes. That's one reason why I think hes the best! Just two friends putting on great concert.:) :)
Damn what a show! Its awesome watching musicians having a good time!
There is a hell of alot of talent on that stage! Love it:)
*Thanks for the upload *
I usually don't listen to this kind of music.
but this is just amazing.
steve vai=perfect techniques+melody...
zappa=perfect selection of notes+melody.....
Notice how infectious this is...HIT IT, Terry!
This is like the coolest jam session I've ever seen lol
The only problem with Vai, is that he's so incredibly fluid at technicality. he's so technical all the time that his licks can sound like there is no emotion behind it. Almost as if an animatronic robot is playing the guitar, programmed with all knowledge of infinite scales, and programmed to play on key but intermingling every possible note of every possible scale. Go listen to him play "blue powder" where he slows it down. He is good. Very good. and has a unique style all his own.
The bend at 1:10 is one of the easiest and most satisying crowd killers ever. I've used it several times and it never gets old.
Dweezils response to that was straight up 70s sunshine!
@@joestefanoni5263 That’s what I was referring to, couldn’t agree more 👍
Late to the party, but this was the best thing I've heard all night!
Amazing musicianship, thank you Dweezel for keeping the stuff alive,And in a lot of ways bringing it to the next level
Steve Vai is so powerful
He changed guitars without ANYONE noticing
4:30 and 4:48
It's not just the guitar...The ending was from diff performance
He also changed shirts. :-P
He also changed his pants, went from black to camo (yeah, it's two+ concerts spliced together).
And Dweezil changed his pants
I would rather believe Steve Vai was so powerful that he also took a shower in between.
I got the CHILLS with this lick at 0:45 sounds epic at 100%
+Daniel Jose Jaramillo Yes, yes, and yes!
gotta respect these guys for taking chances like this live. i do a lot of improvising and its probably the most rewarding type of jamming one can have. awesome!!
This is the type of stuff I like to see and hear, this is so cool everybody just giving it their all.
If there is a kind of "War" on this stage.... The Girl Wins!!
sheila gonzalez! Shes amazing! She waved at me when I saw them live :P
Good thing I was on the toilet for this one
Oh man… the gal on sax plays such great "out there" stuff that comes right back to earth. Winner winner chicken dinner!
phenomenal both of you
1:13 the only riff I can play that still melts faces
There is something about Dweezil's playing which is just more measured and mature.
True respective and accomodating talents pleasure to watch and listen to 👍🏆😎
The amount of talent in that room is out of this world crazy kickass.
I ve rarely seen Steve Vai having so much Fun. This right here is better then most G 3 Guitar Battles i ve seen.
My first guitar, the SG. Angus!
This is brilliant! I have watched it so many times I have forgotten. lol
These two go wayyyyyyyy back. Frank asked Steve to give Dweezil guitar lessons when he was a kid just learning to play. Big bro and little bro killin it!...
Damn you could feel the soul spilling out of the saxophone!
Dweezil zappa for me , more melodic...
Agree!
Nah, Sheila won by a mile
Its Beautiful Music)))))
Steve Vai Zappa.......
Just so bloody FANTASTIC!
man is just me or zappas tone is like, 10x better than vais?
Gibson SG vs Ibanez - no comparison.
vai's tone is better because you can hear every little nuance, sounds more fluid
It's mainly up to the listener, an sg has such a thick full sound, compared to ibanez jems which have more of a rounded quality to the notes.
Believe it or not, 'tone' mostly comes from how you (the player) actuate each note. Density of the the wood (giggity) plays a big part, so do pick-ups, amps, effects...way too much to even make the simple statement that one "sounds 10x better", because of one or two elements, like, choice in guitar and what "sounds better", is only relative.
ofc, but not in this case, vai is actually a better player than zappa. i mean the high end of vais is kinda fuzzy, while zappas is mid range solid rock, dont know how to explain
Great playing Love Dweezil's tone
If we are going to frame this as a competition, then the sax licks were by far the coolest
this...this is why i love music. great vid.
Dweezil's TONE shreds Via's stellar speed all day! Nice guit-fiddle guys!
Exhibit A: 0:44 - 0:49 and 1:14 - 1:18 and 1:29 to 1:33.
The most amazing guitar wizardry happens at 4:44 when somehow Vai's white "evo" Jem guitar changes into a chrome/silver model with blue LED lights on the neck.
(Apparently, they performed this song jam more than once and the videos were spliced together.)
That's all you took from this video?
@@73challenger5031 I guess you don't get much humor where you live.
@@Eyehook777 Oh, is THAT what you were doing? On the other hand, I always laugh when I hear something funny!
@@73challenger5031 zzzzzz
@@Eyehook777 That was funny.
That ending with all together was truly worth applause!
Unbelievable. Two of the best all time guitarists. Must see!
guitar duels against steve vai, allan holdsworth? ... Dweezil is a brave man...
Dyna Moe Hum meets Camarillo Brillo EGADS
where is Allan, not on this video....
Andrew Kosiba Allan is sadly dead way to young but he was on vai’s level .
Hung in there pretty darn well, IMO, at least.
@@mrtyreus0 nope, in an other video, look it up
Musically Dweezil is better, but speed wise Steve is better.
Tears me apart to know how good this is. Knowing it wont ever be repeated. Miss Frank
alls i can say is wow!!!all the greats before them would be very proud of this awesome display of musical genius...
I never knew Liam Neeson was a drummer.
Lol.
So good.
Yeah, joining the band was the only way he could get close to VAI and ZAPPA for stealing his daughter...
Pedro Antonio Delelis sure is!!
Liam wishes he was Terry
He is but nobody talks about it.
Vai has always had a unique sound while sweep picking - love the sound he gets.
WOW!! Masters at work!!!
I was at this show....they are both great players.
If you think about it, Steve's more crazier sounding licks really complemented Dweezil's more chill and soulful playing. And the opposite is true, aswell. I think in this way the song and jam was served much more musically and it sounded more full. You cant stop listening at all because its so unexpected what will happen next and thats because the variety of playing styles going on. So i think the real winner here is the listener.
Steve Vai is the far better guitarist but during that battle he was just playing scales. Dweezil wins for me
This section of the show wasn't meant to be a battle but I guess the uploader decided to clickbait
+GUITAR N GAMES I hadn't considered that but thank you
Mega Sauce the meaning of battle here is a dialog.... both very good....
These guys and gal are having a blast. How wonderful!!!
when the sax started to play, i started feeling my whole body shaking, long live Scheila!
Scheila is still with the band almost 10 years later so if Dweezil recorded all the concerts like his dad, there should be hundreds of great solos in the vaults.
I reached for my cup of coffee and it moved.
Dweezil playing music, Vai playing fragments from earlier solos
love the rapport these two gents have. It's just in their nature.
That is not a battle, the is truly a conversation man, I just loved how the sax joined the dialog, and they all got alone just fine
this is so fucking good and tasty, everybody gives room for each other, really nice licks and melodies
Хай! У вас весело, прям как у нас!
loved this show
Awesome, All of them
dweezil is actually pretty good guitar player
Pretty good? It’s world’s top class level
He's got a great man's blood, which makes him a great man. See what's happening
Most talented jukebox ever, as long as you stick to FZ.
woman on sax won :d
Her name is Sheila Gonzalez :)
She didn't win, they all won because it was a win-win interaction
Sax o
This brought a smile to my face
Oh yeah! I like this. Like here they are having fun and exploring!
Vai is undeniably among the legendary, a guitarist's guitarist, the quality and clarity of those D'amarzios is flawless, if you discover any type of amazing electronic sound phenomenon and can apply it to the guitar, Steve Vai is the first person you'd want to share it with, because he'd dicover it's maximum potential! My point, Dweezil has not summoned his full potential, I love the twangy brassy sound of those oldchool humbucklers, the utilized sharp to flat clashing to break up the harmony grabs attention, its a style, id like to see more from Mr . Zappa, I believe Steve Vai is the key to unlock the genius that remains unshared.
Fuckin' Steve Vai, man. He turns chaos into order. Dweezil ain't no slouch, but Vai is amazing.
You got that right Pal!!
THE Maestro! Dweezil learnt from Steve and his Papa
dammit ya!
Beautiful.
I don't think of it as a battle. Two great players showing off their incredible talent!
this is just an entertainment (music bussines)....guitar battle just an tittle (a project) ... There`s no Win or lose in this song, everyone get in part of that composition,
sukadukaku the meaning of battle here is a dialog.... both won.
Who's the first guitarist Dweezil threw the solo too? He was very unique as well. The one on the Les Paul.
Warren Cuccarulo
Goodballs, that was awesome.
Both are great❤
0:44 aaaaaaaand Steve Vai lost.
Somehow a clever pentatonic lick destroys any shredding wankery
Vai died onstage as result, and the blood was on Dweezil's hands so it was a battle by default
That was quite clever pentatonic riffery
I've always loved the way Jems looked and hated their sound
