  • This is the first in our series of videos where we'll discuss the FMCSA's Safety Measurement System and how the agency issues carriers' CSA scores. In this introduction, we address the purpose of SMS and how it fits into the FMCSA's enforcement program. We then take a high-level look at the scoring methodology. Stay tuned for additional videos in this series where we'll address each BASIC in turn.

    DOT gave our driver 3 OOS 2 395.8(e)(1) and one 395.8(a) how does this weigh ? All three were out of service.

    • @Trucksafe
      @Trucksafe  2 года назад +2

      395.8(e) violations have a severity weight of 7, plus an additional 2 for OOS. So 9 points for each of those. 395.8(a) has a severity weight of 5 plus 2 for OOS, so a total of 7. 9+9+7=a total severity weight of 25. Multiply that by a time weight of 3 and you get a total of 75 points for this one inspection.

      If it’s your only violation, you probably won’t have a CSA score yet. Typically it takes at least 5 inspections with violations before you get a score. That said, this will impact your out of service percentage which is another metric that FMCSA, shippers, brokers, and insurers consider.

      Your out of service rate is simply a calculation of how many of your roadside inspections have resulted in your driver or vehicle being placed out of service. So if this is your one and only inspection, your out of service rate would be 100%. So it depends on how many inspections you’ve had.

      Once the vehicle is placed out of service, it can’t move until the problem is fixed. This means either getting it towed or having a mobile repair unit come out. OOS violations are uploaded to a national database, so if you get pulled over again after an OOS violation, the officer would have access to that fact.
