Homeless Woman's Heartbreaking Struggle. Where Will She Go?

  • Meet Kellie. She used to live in an RV parked in Playa Del Ray until she got offered a spot in a hotel program with a housing voucher promise. But things went downhill from there. No case manager ever showed up, and the service provider running the program wasn't much help either. Whenever Kellie called LAHSA, they just redirected her back to the hotel folks, giving her the runaround.
After months in the hotel program, they told Kellie she had to move to Skid Row or have nothing at all. So, she ended up back in her RV, which she's grateful she didn't sell.
Now, by tomorrow morning, all the RVs have to be gone, or they'll be towed, leaving Kellie with no place to go. She might park her RV in another neighborhood, but she knows she'll eventually be pushed out from there too.
Councilwoman Traci Park and Playa Del Rey residents made the news, celebrating the towing of RVs near Ballona Wetlands. They conveniently forget to mention that these people have nowhere else to go.
Today, we spent the day talking to the remaining vehicle dwellers. LAHSA and St. Joseph case workers were there too, but their "help" was just putting people on a waiting list for a possible hotel room or shelter bed. No specifics or guarantees, just a list to check a box for Traci Park's political game.
When politicians target an encampment for removal, homeless services prioritize that area, leaving other homeless people waiting longer. It's not uncommon for some people to wait for a bed at the Venice Bridge Shelter only to see open beds offered to political agendas over them. Besides being wrong, this is NOT how we will solve homelessness.
Kellie's story is heartbreaking yet crucial. There are tens of thousands of homeless people in LA County, and they're being shuffled around by these so-called "homeless sweeps." Politicians claim they offer housing and services, but being put on a waiting list hardly qualifies as support. And for the lucky few who make it into a hotel, the lack of services and broken promises often drive them right back to tents and RVs.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn't just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don't take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

I live in Honolulu. Across the street from where i used to live was a sidewalk. On the other side of the sidewalk is a rock wall. Going down from that rock wall is brush on a hill. One day i noticed two tents on the side of the rock wall where the brush is. So, i went to introduce myself and ask if i could help in any way. One was a 90 year old man. He told me he gets social security but it's not enough for his own place. The other man was much younger but legally blind and gets disability but that isn't enough to rent even a studio. They each told me they are on the waiting list for low income disabled or senior housing. That could take years. Honolulu has many sad stories like this.

Kellie is an example of a problem that the public doesn’t talk about - older middle-aged people who fall through the cracks. They’re too young to collect retirement and social security, but they’re too old and have too many health challenges to be appealing on the job market. They’re ending up on the streets because they were laid off, and they burned through their entire savings because the job market doesn’t find older workers appealing, so they remained unemployed.

Had I had time to, maybe it wouldn’t have went as well. I was broken as mentioned by many but my faith has kept me going. I thank all to the 😂support I have received. It has rebooted my faith in humanity❤️
Mark, thank you for spreading the word and all the advocates and people at the ground level from the housing to the nonprofit organizations. Thanks to all of you who try to do the endless work with minimal pay and have their hands tied by the people up top, taking all the funds. There should be an audit of some type or checks and balances on this money. 3 billion dollars each year and we still have 167,000 homeless people? You do the math.
And for anyone that thinks it’s as easy as filling out an application and following the steps is sadly wrong. I have a master’s degree and it’s been impossible to navigate through the system having did everything right. Can you imagine the less fortunate people, some not as educated, have severe mental illness and or substance use disorder.I would imagine each of us fall in that category somewhere along the way or some family member atleast.
There are thousands of people that have much less than I do so I feel blessed in many ways. Things can always be worse.
I used to be one of those people that had it all at one time and if you think it can’t ever happen to you, think again. Most people are one or two steps away from me. I pray it doesn’t to anyone else.
The climate of major change is about to come, and I don’t think most people know it or in denial of it. I would say in a few years, millions of people will be fighting for their jobs and if you don’t see it, I feel sorry for you.
I am confused as how a council member calls what happen on Jefferson a success??? By just moving the problem somewhere else in the community and disrupt many others? What did this council member do that was so successful?? Put more people on the street and try to take their only place to live? That is the easy way out!
Cars driving 70-100 mph killing nature along the way is not causing harm to the environment? The sewage from playa del Rey isn’t in that water? The people on the hill should be more concerned about the gas company right below them! the elevation change in the 1960’s caused the major damage of the wetlands and greed! Who really owns Jefferson st and why did they lie to us and illegally ticket us. Even more strange was the warnings we got about being illegally parked in a bike lane when it had never even been proposed to the city, or the drunk driver that hit a few people on bikes that the police never came out on nor is there any report anywhere by the police? Could it be that Jefferson is an easement? That the city contracts with maybe? We can’t fight because we don’t have the funds to do so. I wish someone had the balls to stand up and maybe file a class action lawsuit for the 2.3 million that was proposed to house and give vouchers to the homeless, instead they lied and said we would all get a 2 year voucher if we gave up our RVs and then a week before august put some bullshit warning about parking in a bike lane and gave us ten minutes to leave? She knows exactly who SHE is. How She can take pride in that is disgusting. Taking advantage of the poor and misappropriating funds to make you look good is not a success and you should be ashamed of yourself. And She knows exactly who she is as she rewards herself all over the news. And so I’m saying this, will I be targeted? I will not shut my mouth. The people in support of me put another spark in me to fight and have our questions answered. So I challenge any council member to give us a chance to speak at a meeting to express our ideas and have some accountability on where are vouchers went to? The 2.3 million that was shot down ? I was promised and many others were promised housing and were thrown back out on the street from the hotel as they are at the same time checking more in? Then it hit me. They are getting money each time someone enters and leaves and they are turning and turning and turning making millions off the homeless. I saw it with my own eyes. That is where a lot of your taxpayer money went to I guarantee it. And it is despicable what is happening and yet nobody has had to answer for it!!
It’s difficult to trust anyone if you can’t trust the people that are supposedly fighting for you. Maybe I said too much? Maybe I will never be housed because of it. Some may make sure I never get housed but maybe I have helped many others out there for calling out the corruption from the top.
Or maybe it is too broken to fix. I am speaking only from my own experience and knowledge. Any comments are welcome.
Thank you again and God bless everyone in need!!

I've been to India. I've been to Brazil. The way that America treats homeless people is much, much, WORSE than what goes on in third world countries. At least in third world countries, poverty itself is not viewed as a crime. At least in those countries, people who have no money ate still allowed to live SOMEPLACE. They are not criminally prosecuted simply for the fact of thier mete EXISTENCE. America has manipulated the law so that now, a person who does not have access to a certain amount of wealth, is not allowed to live ANYWHERE.

@@xziztortheeternal6471 The thing is - it doesn't. Homeless people ARE independent. We are probably more independent than any other element of society. Most of us receive few - if any & government benefits. The only thing that we rely on is ourselves., We even have to figure out ways to negotiate basic things like water, electricity, garbage and sanitation. A few weeks ago someone called the police on my husband for the heinous crime of filling water jugs from a hose at a dog park! To be clear - WE ARE NOT THE ENEMY! We do not victimize, abuse, or exploit ANYONE. Even our 'carbon footprint' is negligible. Furthermore, we actually HAVE a home! Why does the fact that my house has wheels make it 'unsuitable for habitation'? It has water, electricity, a refrigerator, a toilet, a stove, it keeps me warm and dry in the winter, cool in the summer, and its locking door and security cameras keep me and my dogs as safe as any house. However, because I am not connected to a power grid, and am able to survive with little money and zero debt, The Powers That Be do everything in thier power to make my existence as difficult as possible.

The way biden is running the country we will all end up like this woman. Why do you think they keep stacking up the debt? One giant giga recession coming up and if I were you all I'd be taking notes on how to survive homelessness off these people

Saldy homelessness and just flat-out being poor has been a chronic issue pretty much since society has been a thing cause people love having more than others and having more power than others

My heart goes out to this woman as I had a partner who experienced a similar Fall from Grace. I supported her for 5 years until her social security kicked in. What really troubles me is why aren't her Children Helping her, surely they have a couch. Hope she found a safe place❤

@@BelleOfAmherstI wonder if you retired from trucking. Does the company offer you 401k pension plan for retirement?. That definitely could supplement social security too. Also over the years you could have bought a house as well since back then housing was cheaper.

With SS Retirement you could live well in Mexico. In Mexico City you can rent a Penson for $88 a month. Private room single bed, wifi utilitie4s. Showers and tv room down the hall. Typical street food meal is $1.50 breakfast, lunch or dinner. Safer than any US Cities. You are told of danger because it is Projection blaming others for y7our very own problems. In Mexico you can live on 30% of what you could in the US. Better health Care than Medicare also for 30% the price.

I live alone and it scares me to death to think that if I become disabled or unable to work, I have NO ONE who can take me and my animals in or help me with expenses. I almost think I watch these to see what i'm headed for. I hate that feeling. Life can be freakin scary.

It would be so helpful to hear the whole story of how this woman started with an education and a job, and ended up homeless. A vague reference to "medical issues" and "mistakes" doesn't tell the whole story. I wish we could hear more details...not just complaints about how the government isn't helping. The government is run by inept criminals - DO NOT RELY ON THEM FOR HELP! All we have is ourselves...Please help us understand the whole story, so we do not make the same mistakes!

If she has a masters in teaching she could teach online or do other things online to make money. I also have health issue that make it nearly impossible to work outside the home, so online work has been a blessing. I hope she finds her way to a more peaceful existence soon.

I don’t know how she’s keeping sane. I was almost her in 2021 and I’m a very strong woman but I was terrified! But for the grace of a longtime friend I would have been her. I’m disabled after work related accident and 6 surgeries that left me permanently disabled in 2015. If not for the pandemic and the insane prices and rent increases I would have been ok in a studio or 1 bedroom. Same friend got me into senior housing but it was a wait list and although I’m grateful and I’m not homeless it’s still tough. But I’ll take this over being homeless any day. I needed to see this to remind me how I felt then and to humble me again. I wish her luck a place to call home. Bless you lady!

Keep a good relationship with your family and eat your pride so that you have a place to be if you’re facing homelessness. Even a tiny parking spot on a relative’s property would bring her stability and probably be much more safe.

They don’t want to get married or maintain healthy relationships with family. They just want taxpayers to fund their independent lifestyle. Make better choices while you’re young and you probably won’t end up like these homeless old women.

This country is so sad we allow this to happen to our citizens yet allow tens of millions of illegals to walk over here get places to live food to eat ,cell phones and we have veterans living on the streets. Everyone needs to stand up and trust in God to know what is right one day hopefully this will end😢❤
