    Ah, I was wondering if you'd finally tell us your work. I used to work Security at Science Fiction Conventions. It was a blast, seeing all the costumes, giving Klingons directions. Of course getting trousers for a passed-out naked drunk and knocking doors to find someone to claim him, and getting the trousers back, was interesting.
    I remember shushing a group so I could hear my radio because it was an important call. "Yes, yes, OK, I'm in. 3 am. Yeah, I can be there. Sure, anything but anchovies."
    And then there was the ghost. That story is on the Boomers Bedtime stories podcast, Halloween edition.
    We wore yellow baseball caps, because yellow is easily identifiable as Security.
    Cheers.

      Thanks Jon, well that certainly sounds like a colourful and unusual place to do security! Drunks at a science fiction convention? Who'd have thought it 😂 I'm guessing much nicer than the usual drunks, but maybe not?!
      I feel like ghosts and security go hand in hand, and damn we've been freaked out many a time, but nothing too unexplainable yet. Is the podcast on Spotify? Would love to listen if it's easily available! Cheers Jon

    Hey guys! This video was a bit of a rollercoaster, wasn't it? 😂 Started off a little rough with the rain and parking fines, but Bath looked incredible! I loved all the old buildings. Also, good on you for checking out that park and ride - always helpful to know where you can stay with the van. 👍 Hope you get that mattress dried out soon!

      Thanks so much! Haha yeah when we filmed everything I wasn't sure how it would come together. No parking fines in the end in Bath thankfully - well, apart from us paying for the park and ride twice just in case, and the clean air charge online since we drove into it briefly, so thought we'd better be safe.
      Bath was wonderful though and yes the park and ride was a great stop! It's sad you can't stay in many really.
      Mattress dried surprisingly quickly with a burst of heat! 🙏

    Nothing quite like a good Bath and I guess being there is about as close to having one as you get in vanlife. Interesting episode, being tired does affect continuity so understandably a bit madcap. 🤪

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  6 месяцев назад

      What's a bath? 🤔😜 Thankfully though we can use showers at service stations, or of course campsites, plus usually when we're at work or visiting family. Long gone are the days when it was an everyday thing though! Believe it or not, our van actually has a shower but we've never used it as that area is full of too much stuff!
      The video made more sense than I thought it would putting it together, but often when you're filming these things and have gaps of days in between footage, you have no idea how it's going to end up 🙃

    Wow, what an amazing city Bath looks to be. I’ve driven past lots on my way to Cornwall but never actually been. Useful to know about the Ulez too. It must be stressful trying to manage everything I probably take for granted such as being able to plug in to use the heating (I had to do this the other week after a leak in the van - which turned out to be condensation).

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  5 месяцев назад

      Thanks Jo ❤ I'm sure you would love Bath, it feels like a one of a kind city here. To be fair the ulez was only £9 a day so not horrific at all, and we had to go in for work the following day anyway! But we were trying to avoid going into it on the day we actually had a look around as that was the point of the Park and Ride, but we messed it up 😂
      Glad your leak was only condensation! Yeah we do miss being able to plug in and use hoovers etc, as even on a campsite we wouldn't carry that stuff with us. We're so used to it now though!

    Well that answer my question from last week. Wished I could come up with a job that can combine work with vanlife. Oh - and I skipped Bath last year, because I thought it would be just another quaint little village, not the cosmopolitan you described ! Oh well - next time

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  5 месяцев назад +1

      Oh lord, where did you ask that, Jack? I'm so sorry I must've missed it 🤦‍♂️Well there you go, that's what we do 😉 For now anyway.
      There are lots of jobs you can do potentially but they're not always that easy to figure out. Remote working usually requires a skill of some sort, however I'm sure it's doable even starting from scratch. Temporary jobs as you travel and working maybe at one time events like festivals can help too, we've done that before.
      Haha Bath is certainly more than another quaint village but you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise given how many we have 😂

    I went to Bath last year to a conference, stayed four nights on the Park and Ride at Lansdown. I used the bus up and down a couple of times, once got a taxi back because it was late, and walked up and down the rest of the time. I camp in my car and have a bus pass. I noticed other cars and camper vans were there for several days. Very unlikely you will get a ticket. ilona

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  6 месяцев назад +1

      After staying there we did think a ticket seemed unlikely. But yes what a great place to access the city! I think we would have done the same as you if we'd stayed longer, by walking in and out one day. How do you find camping in your car? At least you can park in more places in a car 😁

    • @meanqueensuperscrimper8908
      @meanqueensuperscrimper8908 6 месяцев назад

      I have a Focus estate with privacy glass in the back. I can get a 6ft sunlounger in there, but the headroom is a bit restrictive. I would like a van, but I fear they would be more prone to get broken into. I am stuck on Ford, love them. There is a bigger 7 seater van derived car which looks just right, but the one I've seen is diesel and automatic. I want a petrol - manual with a small engine. Yes, it's very stealthy in a car. I have parked in quiet residential streets, and if you are not constantly coming and going, which would draw attention to yourself, once in the back, no one knows you are there. I sometimes stay on motorway service areas. I don't mind paying £13 - £15 for the use of 24 hour facilities, and security cameras.

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  6 месяцев назад

      Well that sounds like good fun in a car and if the car suits you then keep going with it unless you find something that really grabs you. Hmm the break in thing is always a worry. Unfortunately in a van you have to let that be, but of course there are preventative measures, deterrents if you like, and only leaving your van if you feel it's safe. Nothing is guaranteed obviously, but trusting your gut can help and a few other steps.
      You know, we've never stayed in a service station - I think we'd be very happy to same as you for the facilities etc, but only for the prices you've said. If it was £20+ (as I believe some are) we'd probably opt for a campsite instead.
      Service stations are great for shower stops too which I still think a lot of people aren't aware of! Moto usually has them, but you can check online

      Yeah security isn't exciting at all, but we don't want the heavy duty stuff, like bouncer type work. And we would probably never do this as a full time job. But it's okay in short bursts, and also makes us appreciate when we get to travel.

    Love Bath and have never thought about staying in the park and ride. Let us know if you do/don't get a ticket. If not that's one for us in the future. BTW, love Steve's moaning 🤣. Have you ever tried volunteering at one of the vanlife festivals. Pretty sure you'd get a free pitch and there are always loads of people there to manage the arrivals, but after that I suspect you would get to enjoy the festival. I don't talk from any experience, but just a thought. Happy travels. 🤗🤗🚌❤

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hi ladies, we didn't get a ticket, we covered our backs by buying two (there was a camera at the exit, and because we drove in and out twice, the first time to check it out, we thought we'd better play it safe as we didn't know if that would count as two visits 🤔 which we could have argued to be fair if it did come to that). But it was only a couple of quid so didn't seem worth the faff. It's a big car park, not sure about motorhomes if they would fit in the spaces, but there are some larger spots so possibly.
      That's a good idea about volunteering thanks for the tip 👍
      Gotta love Steve's moaning eh, it's here to stay so we as well go along with it 😂

    Bath is very attractive re beautiful buildings. I guessed it was some sort of security you did don't ask me why, there's always a need for that everywhere so it's going to keep you busy as long as you want it to I think. If it pays the bills it's great whatever you do for a crust.
    Pigeons are so used to people but there's something really nice about their little feet round your finger trusting you not to hurt them. There have been a couple in my garden who've gradually got used to me & flown to my hand for food which makes my heart swell with something very special. If people don't like them it's their problem quite honestly, I'd rather know the people who accept the animal kingdom as equals.

      Thank you Chrissy, yes we do have a place for any paperwork etc to be sent. Luckily we've reduced mail to next to nothing but we still need something like that for things to be sent, e.g having renewed our passports recently and of course most things (phone contracts, our job, anything really) you have to list a place of address usually 🙂
      As for fines, that was somewhat overstated in the video I think 😂 We were concerned about a few in Bath, and it had just come off the back of a parking fine where we took our own ticket off the windscreen because we thought we were leaving, but decided to nip to the shop quickly instead. We forgot to put the ticket back on, and bang, parking fine. In about 15 minutes. Our own fault there but they don't half jump on you in the UK! 🤦‍♂️

    Have you been to Edinburgh? Arguably, its Georgian New Town architecture is hardier, as Bath's Royal Crescent stone is of lesser quality. So, you can see good Georgian architecture here in Edinburgh. However, much of it was built on Slave Trade money, which of course is very controversial.

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  6 месяцев назад +1

      We have only been to Edinburgh once, to the hospital, so as you can imagine that wasn't top of the tourist sites 😂 (we were fine, just visiting a relative). But we would love to return and I'm sure we will. That sounds right up our street and you're certainly selling it now if the buildings are of even greater quality 😉
      As for their origins...of course, it won't be the only thing built on slave trade money sadly. But I think it's possible to appreciate them separately from that issue. Having that information to hand for tourists is probably useful to get the full historical picture.

      To be fair, our videos are about numerous things - travelling and being in the van. Only one thing can make the "title" and this was one people have asked us about a lot, so it made sense to make people aware that this was the video that featured it, but it was hardly enough content to justify a whole vlog to itself.
