Because of the times, Ska wasn't very popular and the it sounded more like Blink 182 and Good Charlotte without the horns, both those bands were genuine chart topping money makers.
Listen to the album version or a live version. There are horn riffs in the chorus that were taken out for the radio single/video. "The Science of Selling Yourself Short" music video also omits the sax solo in the bridge for whatever reason. There are still horns in the bridge, but they are subtle. Remember this was in 2003, years after third wave ska's popularity in the mainstream died and bands started switching to a punk or rock sound. The horns were toned down or left out completely. Even Reel Big Fish did this in 2002 with their hornless single "Where Have You Been?". It's what happened when the bands signed to a major label and ska wasn't cool anymore, so they changed their sound to fit current tastes.
@@dcthomp I imagine it would have. It's a pop-punk song back when that was big on MTV and it's also very repetitive (not necessarily in a bad way) and catchy. Popular songs are usually like that.
When I was 12 I saw this video on Fuse and remember laughing, thinking “No way I could be into this band”. My birthday was like a week later and someone bought me the album and I eventually bought every album they put out. Pezcore, Losing Streak, Hello Rockview, B&B, etc. 😂 I don’t think this song is bad (like I used to) but imo there were so many better songs on Anthem to use as singles.
A) yes, it's Rory from Gilmore girls....I love her! B)they do have horns in the song....perhaps they just want to try something a little different. They don't always have to be bright and pop-y, which is what horns are for. This song has a dark tone to it. It doesn't need a ton of pizzazz, it's meant to be crunchy. :)
The only part they took out for the this radio version was the horn riff in the chorus. Listen closer to the bridge. The horns are there. They are playing long tones as harmony instead of a melodic line.
@Farknuggets You are right in that this song kind of abandoned the ska punk style. this was from when they were being promoted by Warner records as a mainstream band. even this video version of the song had less horn parts in it than the album version. after they left WMG and went on their own label, their style returned back to one with more ska influences. Go listen to GNV FLA and their new EPs, their great. Just goes to show you how the major labels can influence an artist's music!
A song and music video about Dakota Rhodes. Less Than Jake is a time-travel band by my future son born to the very beautiful Twitch streamer Lauren Nichole, also known as "thatssoolauren". She looks like a model or something, I consider myself very lucky to be a father of her child.
@PsychoPop There are horns they are playing when she is trashing the room about have half through the video. They're a bit hard to hear but they are there.
wow when you see this video then watch the ones from my teenage years i can see how bands get changed with the way they look and sound ,why can't we just have a band do what they want? why does a guy with a big cigar have to own them and tell them what to do next ,world would get better music, but oh well RIP good music i guess.
I slept on this band as a scene kid in the early 2k, but this is pretty good. I miss when you could go to any punk show and see a room full of girls like the kind shown in the bathroom shot: wall to wall blue jeans, Chucks and studded belts. What a time to be alive.
oh I love this song so much but right now during the quarantine this song has me right now at the heart of it but watching this video thinking about when I came out in early 2000s the girl from Gilmore Girls and it's so early 2000 music video Just because the girl from Gilmore Girls is it Love You Less Than Jake

The horn parts get cut down in the "Science of Selling Yourself Short" video as well, and an entirely different, less-horns version of "Dopeman" is released in that song's music video. This is purely speculation, but both albums those songs are on were on major labels, and it could be that the label execs didn't think the horns were marketable and wanted them toned down in the music videos. Just my opinion though.
Alexis really does have the perfect face for this. beautiful, and big sad eyes.
For the life of me, I can't imagine why this song was ever released without the horns.
I think because they want to better on the charts.
SAME
There was one version with
Because of the times, Ska wasn't very popular and the it sounded more like Blink 182 and Good Charlotte without the horns, both those bands were genuine chart topping money makers.

I remember hearing this song and watching this music video at probably the age of 9. I’ve never been the same since.
I owned this CD when it was first released, and was hanging with friends smoking pot and loving this sh!t before this MV was even released. 👍😁

Lmaooo
it's been about 7 years... I think it's safe to assume she has broke now
Love em
She's gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
She's gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
With so many problems in her life it really comes as no surprise
She's gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
She's gonna break
Welcome to her busy dizzy life
Of going out and getting high
And following all the latest trends
While shedding all her oldest friends
It's been weeks worth of weekends
With fake I.D.s and fake passions of her best friends
She's gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
She's gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
With so many problems in her life it really comes as no surprise
She's gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
She's gonna break
She's been thinkin' wishin' she could hide
From the girls with the comments passing by
It's the boys in bars on Friday night
That replace the emptiness inside
She'll be spending her whole weekend
Faking laughs and faking smiles with her fake friends
She's gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
She's gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
With so many problems in her life it really comes as no surprise
She's gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
She's gonna break
Promises you made back home
Are crumpled like the goodbye notes
And last night's dirty clothes
Were on the floor next to the phone
And it's been disconnected months ago
No calls from your friends back home
You lost your point of view and now
It's got the best of got the best of got the best of you
She's gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
She's gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
With so many problems in her life it really comes as no surprise
She's gonna break soon
Gonna break soon
She's gonna break
OMG! :) Alexis Bledel! I love her! Haha xx
