"Try to realise it's all within yourself No one else can make you change And to see you're really only very small And life flows on within you and without you." -George Harrison
This song is a textbook example of good songwritting. Every 4 measures the storytelling from the lyrics goes deeper and deeper, avoids sounding redundant and keeps adding tension for the chorus to be expected and it hits just on time so the message from it hits harder each time and the melodic elements like the bass line, the guitar solos and riffs are simple and effective, very well implemented.
Offspring, i hate to say, can be formulaic with their music however, as you said, textbook. Rhyme, meter, verse, chorus and refrain. And their music is just great and still holds up decades later.
@@devild1986 Every song follows a formula whatsoever, but I get what you mean. Still, I think that whether you follow a more conventional song structure or not each section must collide properly, let's say there's a song that wants to "be different" and add a pre-verse that doesn't fit, in that case I'd rather listen to a more conventional song in terms of structure, but well implemented.
RIP to my friend and teammate James Green. He had everything going for him. I'll never forget attending a Milwaukee Brewers tryout camp and they kept him until the very end. A true talent. He could've easily made it to the show but his life was tragically cut short. This song will always remind me of him. See you soon Big Green.
I am 47 years old. This damn piece has been with me all the years since it was written. When I lack strength, motivation I turn it on loudly and it knits like coffee, alcohol and drugs at the same time! In 2025 I'm going to a concert to hear it live again!
For me the song is hitting the point that as younger people we had all the potential of the world in our hands and dreams we could chase - but as we grew older, our financial situation - family and all the crap we had to deal with along the way changed us - we had to focus on surviving - earning to pay bills - dealing with terrible family dynamics that influences how we saw the world and how we reacted to what situations we found our selves in, some of our own making, other situations were out of our controls - hence the shattered dreams and wasted potential, cruelest dream is reality if you dont make yourself strong enough to overcome the challenges --- 39 years old and this song hits hard - im not where i dreamed I would be as a teenager - but I am thankful for what I have fought for - it could have been much worse.
Your comment hits so hard, only truths, that's also why time is so precious, having lost +10 years of my life from my adolescence until I was almost 27 it hurts terribly. It's supposed to be the best and greatest time of our lives and I didn't get to enjoy it, partly my fault to be honest but there were too many things I couldn't control.. and it That's what hurts the most. I don't know where I will be in 10 years, all I can say to the younger people reading this comment is that under no circumstances should you waste your time or stay in a place where you get bored. If your life seems dull and you are missing out on something, wake up, you can still pull yourself together! You have to go for it and enjoy, experiment and discover as much as you can, do good around you, as best you can and above all don't look back. Life is far too short and precious to waste your time, the worst thing is to find yourself in 10, 15 or 20 years and have regrets. You must avoid that at all costs, regrets are the worst thing, I know that you have already seen and heard this type of speech many times and that it is much easier to to say what to do, I had exactly this kind of reaction and today I bitterly regret it. If you need help, get help, talk to someone, anyone, but above all don't stay alone, whoever you are, no matter where you are there will always be people who appreciate you and who will love you! Be yourself as much as possible, don't be afraid and move forward, move forward, move forward again and again. I want that in 10 years or more you will have no regrets when you come back to listen to your favorite music, RUclips is the greatest time machine so until then I want your nostalgia for the future to make you much more happy than sad !
What you say is so true, been listening to this type of music for the past 20yrs only, before I use to be a edm freak, but the words in these songs hit hard reality as if these guys can see the future, had I know back then what I know now, I would have made all the same mistakes as they where well worth it, however fixing them would have been so much easier........For those of you young than 30 yrs old, listen to the above mentioned words carefully as it is straight out reality, wise words to follow and I quote "Do not create problems for your self, as other people will create enough problems for you" I never new what it meant at the time I was told, 37 years later I now know that this is the reality this world issues to us all........ My man you are a legend for putting this out there and even if your words only helps 1 youngster it would have been well worth it ... I diffidently second your statement 100%
@@keithshardiz210Hit the nail on the head. Life is too short and regrets are the worst. I've been aware of that for so long yet I keep making mistakes.
I hear you my brother and you are spot on it seems like only a few years ago i was partying every night and lived the best life now all my family has died and half of my friends the mother of my child after being together for 20 years said she was going to say hi to a friend and didnt come back or ever say goodbye to are son and my whole world fell apart with no family or friends to turn to and it was on my 50th birthday and i thought life sux being old i hate it i wish i could go back ,now 5 years on me and my 12 year old are having the best fuckin time of are life and then i thought hang on im old now but im so happy and also have the smarts not to be a young drunk wanker chasing after drugs and women and would never want to be young dumb and full of come and my sons mums life is a nightmare and hates everyday of her life so i must admit i love getting old as now im wise and life is great and i think us men are scared of getting old but i havent got old my 12 year old seems more grown up lol so never hate getting older as it can end uo being the best time of your life and u dont have to grow old and feel old im still 20 in my head but as the old saying goes youth is wasted on the young. ps sorry this was so long my point was if u are alot younger than me imbrace getting older and love it because life at 20 seems like u will live for ever but after u turn 50 makes u thing every day counts as u know time is slowly running out so u make every day count and betime im 60 soon i will have more tattoo and piercing than any one i know and wil still think im 20 till the day i say goodbye ,as its so cool getting old as u have heaps of cash and are smart as hell and i now look back and think yer fuck that its so much better now ,good luck growing old my brother hope u love it as much as i have so now im off to have a cone and blast out the ramones and i kick my boys ass on xbox.

my parents bought this CD for me on my 8th birthday (mostly because my dad secretly loved The Offspring) He has since passed. I'm 29 now and still have the exact same CD...it's one of my most prized possessions.
Lost so many friends down the road. What I tell youth now is to cherish each other and enjoy every single moment with each other and always better each other cause I promise you nothing stays the same. Nothing is sacred. Time stops for no one. Life as you know it will just be one big memory.
I still think the Offpsring has some of the best lyrics. Their stuff was never simply about sex and partying like a lot of the artists, their lyrics are extremely well written, yet still raw. Dexter is obviously brilliant as someone with a PhD should be, and I'm glad that I had the chance to grow up on his lyrics and see him live twice.
"Kids Aren't Alright" by The Offspring captures the essence of our collective struggle, echoing louder in today's world. We were those kids, and it seems the cycle continues with conditions worsening for the next generation. But amidst the chaos, rock and metal have always been our glue, the powerful force that held us together. These genres are more than music; they're a community, a form of resistance, and a source of strength. As we navigate these turbulent times, let's remember the bond that rock and metal have forged among us. They've been our solace, our rallying cry, and our call to unity. Let's lean on that unbreakable bond, support one another, and continue to be the change we've always sought. Together, with rock and metal as our anchor, we can weather any storm.

Crazy to think at 34 now that this songs resonates way different than It did when I was young, when I was a teenager it was full of adrenaline an happy emotions , now older with life obstacles in the way and best friends that have come and go due to addictions , suicide and overdose makes this song hit different , some people make it in life some dont. Everyone is battling demons no one knows about , just make peace and be kind to people!
I, unfortunately, learned that lesson when I was way younger than I should have been so The Offspring always hit like this for me, it just hits harder now then ever.
27 years old, this song always hits me right in the feelings. back in the 90's almost nobody could understand English in my country. as a kid we ( me and my friends) always enjoyed this song. of course we had no idea what this song was about, but as I grew up, so this song became real for me and for my friends who are gone.. and we listened this song together. yes, the world is a cruel place, struggling with anxiety, depression and neurosis, fear of pandemic stuff and trying to survive when you have no real friend around. a bunch of fake imbeciles wherever you are, whoever you are, whatever is your sexual orientation or religious views, you aren't alone. we have to stay strong or we'll become the lyric of this song as my old friends. still remember the way how they smiled and laughed, but can't forget how I buried them. I mean a funeral "ceremony" may god bless ya'll
back when I didn't speak any English all these punk rock bands from late 90's/early 2000's sounded so positive and high energy. I had no idea what they were saying so these songs would always cheer me up and make my day seem brighter. Little did I knew these lyrics were deeply depressing or anti-stablishment.
Take the dark lyrics as your motivation to be a better person and make the world a better place. If we all do this, our grandchildren may get to know these songs just as a reminder of a terrible past.
Yes! I just came across it by chance and thought to myself: "Offspring, you haven't heard that for a long time!" Oh boy...the lyrics...what the hell.... But it is what it is. Friends actually killed themselves, smoked weed and were unemployed. That's how it is. I decided a few years ago to become the master of my own destiny. Everyone is responsible for getting themselves out of their own mess. Pull yourselves together and blame YOURSELVES. You can do it.... we are all gonna make it brah, that's it.
It's like all those MAGA hats unironically singing along to Born in the USA thinking it is some sort of jingoistic ballad. Maybe they should try listening to some of its lyrics?
To the future people who are listening to this song, please don’t let this masterpiece die. Please let this song live on through on all eternity!! I’m begging you!!
As kid i never understood this song however as an adult now i truly understand it now more then ever. This song will always be relevant no matter how old it is. We were once kids with dreams some of us achieved those dreams, most of us had our dreams shattered, some of us couldn't handle the pressures of reality no more, but most of us stuck with it. the cruelest dream is reality for sure.
Yes - how true this is. People dream of the stars and some pretty much get there, while others plummet back to Earth with a bump. Most of us are somewhere in the middle.
Same. I just passed it off as another rock song at the time. Never really ad attention to the lyrics. That second verse is exceptional writing. Great song, FANTASTIC video
Yeah I think most of us fell through the cracks. School just wants to to graduate, they don’t care as much if you cheat or not on tests. They just want to get themselves a good score so they can get more money. Teachers are crushed by the amount of work, student behavior, educational board requirements, im sure there’s more. Parents just want to see you succeed. But they won’t tell you how to. Or teach you how to bc that’s the “schools job” I think there is a fundamental disconnect between parents, school boards and teachers. I think it’s safe to say that Americans schools are useless when it comes to getting kids, teens and young adults ready for the “real world” It’s no wonder people fail hard after high school or college.
The music video to this song is so well done. It portrays how deep the song really is, and lives stray from a path pretend innocence that the teen years were.
Мне кажется это лучший клип 90x - 2000 годов. Всем причастным людям, авторам, группе и так далее, огромное уважение. С любовью из России. Помню как мы записывали клипы с канала MTV на кассеты VHS, было круто
90s baby now 32. My cousin is addicted to alcohol and drugs, my friend committed suicide at 21. This song means a lot to me and I’m lucky I’ve chose a right path in this twisted world. Offspring forever 🎸
The sad part is the older you get the more likely you realize The Offspring sold out to Vevo and this is just a false image of the Offspring you thought you knew.
Yesterday was my birthday. Exactly 20 years ago a friend who also visited me now, made me a present of 'Americana' cassette. It has been one of my favorite songs ever since.
Being 25 now, and listening to Our childhood songs with a whole different level of Understanding them, compared to 12, 13 & 14 years old...man i'm Falling in love with these old tracks ALL OVER AGAIN❤
I used to like this song in my teens because it sounded sick and catchy, now I'm 35 and it gives me goosebumps. when your young and have the whole world Infront you don't realise the kind of shit you're going to see or fall into, how fast people around you change, falling into the pits and ruts of life sometimes never to be seen again. This song has a whole new feeling to me now, it still sounds sick, it's just more morose.
The importance of this music becomes more vivid with age. "Cruelest dream, reality" - The 30-somethings tried to warn us. A catchy tune landing on deaf ears. Ears simultanouesly geting deafer and less deaf with time... I witnessed everything they warned me about yet I'm still to do anything to mitigate it or reverse the damage. God speed
This song is so true on so many levels. We used to have a bright future and a great society filled with many dreams, and now we're slowly but surely losing that to greed, sloth and arrogance.
When I was a kid I listened to this song with my group of friends and thought "this is so cool"... Now I realized what this song really says and it gets deep in you. Specially when you are the one who stayed in town and the one who got to explain to old friends that came back what happened to our group. It hits you really hard when you see that tear after telling them...
Better than them offing themselves or getting a drug addiction. Edit: Okay maybe not Fortnite. But I'd still be fine with playing video games and bonding with them.
Yep, we're parents now of kids around the age where things get complicated and time seem to start moving faster. The magic, faith and luster begin to fade and that grumpy, greedy, cutthroat b*tch called adulthood comes knocking at your door and rent is due.
‘Cause you don’t see the life with the child that is in everyone of us. So when people grow turn almost in themeselves and everything seems more dark and cold. I’m not completely on the wave of this song. Everyone should look at the cold and hard part of the life since he is a kid with an adult that try to talk about it near him. So when the life and many venemous persons that you meet, they will give you a less deep and heavy impact to the society and. Childhood should’nt be an illusion as The Offspring sing in this song. When a solid wall of it crash down you can feel lost.

Got to agree with everyone where this is one of those songs that you just don’t get when you’re younger. Was never one of my favourites growing up but when I rediscovered it a few years ago it certainly has become one. Whole lotta emotions from this one
I blame hormones. We simply don't produce the same type and quanity of hormones when we are teenagers vs our 30s and 40s. Our very bodies recycle the entire mass of our cells something like once every 7 years, we almost become different people multiple times throughout our lives.
When you are over 40 years old and reflect on all the changes and misfortunes that your neighborhood has gone through, this song takes on an even stronger meaning than when you listened to it when you were still young and innocent. Timeless music!
Nowadays I’m 35 and I’m a youth counsellor. I was running a group program on Wednesday and the theme of the session was sharing songs that have an emotional impact on us. Not only does it reiterate how much music is a great coping mechanism, but it gets the kids talking about their feelings and emotions in a place that is safe and they don’t even realise their sharing their vulnerabilities cause it’s such a comfortable way to do so. After I played ‘Three Little birds’ to discuss a song that helps me feel really upbeat, they asked me to play a song that hits me in the more sadder emotions… we ran out of time but this will be the song I play to them next week. Gets me in all the feels.
@@ex_leper222 they were more excited about playing the group their choices of songs, but there were comments like ‘ohhhh this song! I know this song!’ 😂
This song perfectly describes my experience growing up in the lower middle class suburbs in the 90's and early 00's. I know a house for every line in this song. Hell, even one of the names is the same.

I think, to this day, that early 2000s was the best era in russian culture.

When you are young you are naive, dreamy, you love almost everything and starting with teachers almost all frustrated and jealous adults tried to take advantage of you. Sometimes also your parents. You should think this when you now are in front of young boys and girls

Just like that! When you are a kid, in the immense shades of colors of your euphoria and dreams you continually exclaim "My G..d how beautiful, one day I'll do this, I'll do that". Then when you grow up in the cold and gray of real life you just say “Unfortunately that's how it happened.” As Robert Smith sings in his song “All cats are grey” /
I first heard this back in 2009-2010 when I was 13-14 years old. This brings back a lot of happy memories of just banging to hits like this one and skating all day. Were carefree days back then, unlike now. Good thing is thanks to the internet, you can always come back to these songs and remember the good ol days!

I think that one of the most important things we can do for the next generation is to let them know early on in their teen years the real meaning of this song and how it relates to real life.
@anomie nous To me the real meaning of this song is that everyone had unreal expectations on how life was going to be, and when reality hit and people found out they weren't special and they weren't all going to make it big they stopped caring. Rather than preparing themselves to make themselves big by working people were told that they were going to make it big without any effort, and to me that is a huge disservice to a person.
This song's actually depressing and deep as shit. Normal, happy kids who once had amibitions, goals and dreams in their life. But ended up either addicted, homeless, dead or in a terrible situation later in life
@@fredfry5100 It seems to me atleast to be very hard to be only one doing almost anything and being only person in the world to do so with so many of us here on planet earth :3

And do you like also The Cure, Ramones, David Bowie, Beastie Boys, Aerosmith, Dream Theater, Linkin Park, Ugly Kid Joe? Slowdive? Actually I can appreciate Billie Eilish too! She’s so eclectic, so Indie...

@@oopsallchromosomes8994 It's about all problems including drugs. He talks about his buddy overdosing and dying in this song. What the hell do you even mean?
No it doesn't. We just don't remember or care about what it meant when it came out. Life isn't harder now than it was, the dangers of our choices aren't more poignant we just don't respect anything from yesterday anymore.
@@whisperienced are you kidding??? It's about every possible problem a child that becomes an adult can have. Missed opportunities, drugs, early pregnancies, or whatever. It's about the choices you make as you get older and life as an adult and the ramifications of making poor choices
I hear you man. I remember going on a school trip and a kid on the bus was singing "why don't you get a job" at the top of his voice. I'm thinking it must have been mid '99. Probably the trip before summer holidays. This album was huge in 99.
For me, one of the best bands of my adolescence... Punk... Crazy... Hardcore... Style... There was a lot of street skateboarding, rollerblading, cross-country bikes and a lot of adrenaline in my veins... 1998, my adolescence, the best crazy years of my life. Today, at 41, everything sucks, this adult life 😢 everything is bad and boring, so much whining, so much fuss, happy are those who have already died, best years 80's 90's 2000's... Rest in Peace Old Times Wonderful ✌️🕊️
This was one of the first albums I ever purchased for myself as a teenager. This was one of my favourite tracks... I used to listen to it without knowing how much relevance the song would hold in life now over 20 years later. Pretty insane. One of us OD'd One of us died in an accident One of us got addicted to crack and vanished One of us can't get past the struggle for minimum wage One of us has been on suicide watch multiple times and can't hold any sort of job One of us has an unknown illness that's slowly killing him One of us is an accomplished type of person but can't break their gambling addiction One of us got handed the family business but that's his life now One of us fell into family life with a toxic relationship One of us went crazy One of us went overseas One of us actually made it somewhere themselves in life And then there's me. I was born with an anxiety disorder. I used to think I'd fall into some category there above... but oddly enough life is panning out ok. You know, for all those burned dreams and long gone aspirations I have now, hearing this song really puts it into perspective just how lucky I am to be on the path I'm on, even though life isn't exactly as I'd hoped it would be nor am I nowhere near any position I'd like to be in with my career and family life, I'm happy and have a direction in life to move in. Just that alone counts for more than most it seems. Oh how lucky I really am.
Thank you really much for your comment.I'm actually 26 and i see people just get wracked ,and so i am .But at least ,you bring some hope that something good can actually happen in our life .Very appreciated

Sometimes I can listen to this song and sing it happily... And, sometimes, this song has something that breaks me. This is just a masterpiece❤
❤
I concur very well put
Offspring, i hate to say, can be formulaic with their music however, as you said, textbook. Rhyme, meter, verse, chorus and refrain. And their music is just great and still holds up decades later.
@@devild1986 Every song follows a formula whatsoever, but I get what you mean. Still, I think that whether you follow a more conventional song structure or not each section must collide properly, let's say there's a song that wants to "be different" and add a pre-verse that doesn't fit, in that case I'd rather listen to a more conventional song in terms of structure, but well implemented.

So awesome!
Glad it's inspired you so much. Good band.

Я чувствую то же самое, только с другой стороны планеты Земля. Привет, друг.

Woah-oh
The old neighborhood was so alive
Woah-oh
And every kid on the whole damn street
Woah-oh
Was gonna make it big and not be beat
Now the neighborhood's cracked and torn
Woah-oh
The kids are grown up, but their lives are worn
Woah-oh
How can one little street swallow so many lives?
Chances thrown
Nothing's free
Longing for, used to be
Still it's hard, hard to see
Fragile lives
Shattered dreams (go!)
Jamie had a chance, well, she really did
Woah-oh
Instead she dropped out and had a couple of kids
Woah-oh
Mark still lives at home 'cause he's got no job
Woah-oh
He just plays guitar and smokes a lot of pot
Jay commited suicide
Woah-oh
Brandon OD'd and died
Woah-oh
What the hell is going on?
The cruelest dream, reality
Chances thrown
Nothing's free
Longing for, used to be

Crazy to think at 34 now that this songs resonates way different than It did when I was young, when I was a teenager it was full of adrenaline an happy emotions , now older with life obstacles in the way and best friends that have come and go due to addictions , suicide and overdose makes this song hit different , some people make it in life some dont. Everyone is battling demons no one knows about , just make peace and be kind to people!

If only this lesson was taught to every child.
Just moved back to my old hometown after 10 years abroad. The kids I grew up with that didnt make it out are definately not alright
I'm one of the lucky ones. Did I become huge? No. But I survived situations I had no right to survive, and have a reasonable -- if quiet -- life.
I, unfortunately, learned that lesson when I was way younger than I should have been so The Offspring always hit like this for me, it just hits harder now then ever.
27 years old, this song always hits me right in the feelings. back in the 90's almost nobody could understand English in my country. as a kid we ( me and my friends) always enjoyed this song. of course we had no idea what this song was about, but as I grew up, so this song became real for me and for my friends who are gone.. and we listened this song together.
yes, the world is a cruel place, struggling with anxiety, depression and neurosis, fear of pandemic stuff and trying to survive when you have no real friend around. a bunch of fake imbeciles

back when I didn't speak any English all these punk rock bands from late 90's/early 2000's sounded so positive and high energy.
Same here this songs hit totally different nowadays
its what made them good, they were always real.

Well. Hello there
Yeah I think most of us fell through the cracks.
Or teach you how to bc that’s the “schools job”
I think there is a fundamental disconnect between parents, school boards and teachers.
I think it’s safe to say that Americans schools are useless when it comes to getting kids, teens and young adults ready for the “real world”
It’s no wonder people fail hard after high school or college.

Hi Ryan 👋

You're a good youth counsellor... Greetings hopefully I have gotten a teacher like you...

This song perfectly describes my experience growing up in the lower middle class suburbs in the 90's and early 00's. I know a house for every line in this song. Hell, even one of the names is the same.
This song hits hard, when you are not a kid anymore.

It’s not just that in June 2024 we still listen to ROCK in our blood. I'm Russian, but I grew up listening to US rock. I thank the performers for the amazing moments that came from MTV to RUSSIA. All the best
Я до сих пор помню голос Василия Стрельникова, как он анонсировал на английском новые клипы на MTV.
I think, to this day, that early 2000s was the best era in russian culture.

Just like that! When you are a kid, in the immense shades of colors of your euphoria and dreams you continually exclaim "My G..d how beautiful, one day I'll do this, I'll do that". True as life. Strong as rock. When years pass you become aware of its lyrics deep meaning. Eternal song…
@Kel Rowland sounds pretty good for my first listen. You like you synthetic and repetitive shit it get it but let people enjoy.
I love all songs from "Americana"❤
I think that one of the most important things we can do for the next generation is to let them know early on in their teen years the real meaning of this song and how it relates to real life.
@anomie nous To me the real meaning of this song is that everyone had unreal expectations on how life was going to be, and when reality hit and people found out they weren't special and they weren't all going to make it big they stopped caring. Rather than preparing themselves to make themselves big by working people were told that they were going to make it big without any effort, and to me that is a huge disservice to a person.
This song is a perfect example of enjoying the music when your younger, but understanding the lyrics when your older.

Difficult but tomorrow can be magical if you see the monstrous gift LIFE!!
This was one of the first albums I ever purchased for myself as a teenager. This was one of my favourite tracks... I used to listen to it without knowing how much relevance the song would hold in life now over 20 years later. Pretty insane.
One of us OD'd
One of us died in an accident
One of us got addicted to crack and vanished
One of us can't get past the struggle for minimum wage
One of us has been on suicide watch multiple times and can't hold any sort of job
One of us has an unknown illness that's slowly killing him
One of us is an accomplished type of person but can't break their gambling addiction
One of us got handed the family business but that's his life now
One of us fell into family life with a toxic relationship
One of us went crazy
One of us went overseas
One of us actually made it somewhere themselves in life
And then there's me.
