    I have been having since 3 months and this piece of glass is absolutely stunning. i am very happy. Not only super sharp, but fast focus and precise let alone bright. It works as a 50mm in full frame so the perfect lens for all purposes.

    Great review! I can only say it confirms my own experience with this fantastic little lens on the 60d and 5d. I'd just like to add that the colors are absolutely fantastic compared to the 15-85, because of the way this lens renders colors it's become just about my favourite lens!

    Excellent Review Christopher! You answered all my questions about this lens and I have decided this will meet my needs as an amateur. I was comparing this to the older EX, but after reviewing your video, this is no longer an option. Cheers!

    Thank you for the review. I just bough the lens and it is outstanding on Pentax K3-ii. It dose have some of the purple fringing when wide open but it is sharp even when wide open and in low light the purple is not a problem . The purple glow is not present when the light is not as bright so I suspect that it could be simply too much light getting on the sensor.

    WHen video taping .. can you still blur the backgrounds?

    • @AGH331
      @AGH331 8 лет назад +2

      +Victoria Lyn Beauty Of cause - background blurriness results from shallow depth of field, which in turn is achieved through a wide aperture. If you film at e.g. f/1.4, you get beautifully blurred background.

  • @AshaTregear
    @AshaTregear 9 лет назад

    This might be a silly question but how do I adjust the aperture down to f1.4 for video mode? I have this lens and I adjusted it down at 1.4 in the aperture section on the camera but I feel like when I go to video mode the background isn't as blurry. Thanks

    • @RyanAlbertRucas
      @RyanAlbertRucas 9 лет назад +3

      if you are using Nikon, you must set the aperture before you go to video mode.
      on tricky conditions, you can try using it in aperture priority and use auto ISO.

    • @jesseflintstone3053
      @jesseflintstone3053 9 лет назад

      It depends on what you're shooting. But there is no doubt that at f/1.4 your camera is focusing only on a very shallow plane in the frame. For instance, if you were shooting someone's face 2 feet from the camera and focused on his nose, then his ears would be out of focus, possibly his eyes, as well. But let's say you're in a large empty room and you shoot a clock that's on the other side of the room. Well, everything will appear to be in focus. That's because the room is empty! But if there was a chair right in front of you, in the same room, then it would be completely out of focus. Conversely, if you focused on the chair, the clock on the wall would be thrown out of focus. As you change ("close down") the f/stop to a larger number, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, etc. then everything becomes more and more in focus. But the camera will need more light. And your shutter will have a role in this, as well.

    • @RyanAlbertRucas
      @RyanAlbertRucas 9 лет назад

      the background blur would still be the same. I'm not sure with Canon but maybe there are two profiles between stills and video.

    Hey chris! Would mean a lot if you were to help me pick out which lens to get. I have a 70d and 2 EF-S IS STM Lenses, 10-18mm for my landscape and architectural shots and a 55-250 for sports, wildlife, etc. I'm looking to buy a lens to shoot people with. Street photography and portraits. Also a Milkyway photography capable lens. Should I get the Sigma Art 30mm f1.4, the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8, the Canon 50mm f1.8 STM or the Canon 35mm f2 IS USM? Thanks!!!

      For portraits of full body and environmental portraits, you want the 30mm f/1.4 Art for APS-C (equivalent to 48mm and closest to 50mm on full frame canon)
      For portraits of upper body and head+shoulders, you want something like the Canon 85mm f/1.8 USM or equivalent.

    Chris. I'm thinking about this for my first prime, but reading a lot about serious problems with the AF on this and other Sigma lenses, due to poor reverse engineering of the Canon (and others) AF systems. Do you have any experience of this yourself? Your reviews of this and the 35mm suggest you are pretty happy with both lenses.

      Christopher Hooper The AF wasn't always spot-on, but it wasn't too bad, either. Phase-detect AF (AF through the viewfinder) really isn't always very accurate anyway, especially with such fast lenses. Liveview AF is always nice and accurate, though :-)

    Hello Mr. Great reviews. I was wondering if you could give me your opinion on a new lens. I have not yet decided which lens to get, but my two picks are this 30mm Sigma F1/4 or Samyang 16mm F.2. To be honest i have never shoot with manual lens - this is why i am scared to buy this one. On the other hand I am looking for a lens that would be able to shoot family pictures indoors (so close distance). I also like your review of the sigma 30mm, but i am a owner of a canon 50mm 1.8 lens and i feel like there will be not that big difference in the wideness. I would also prefer the smallest size of the lens. I would be great for any of your thoughts. Thank you tomas

    Hello Chris, I just had the chance to try this lens, and I must say that in comparison with my 50 1.8 canon lens, pictures i took are just another world. So i decided to buy this one. In the shop though we found out that this particular lens was front focusing approx. 1.5 cm and when using higher F stops it was even more. I was just wondering if I should expect this from all these lenses - that it is necessary to take it to the service and recalibrate. (they had only one lens in the shop unfortunately) I am also curious when I have the lens recalibrated once will it stay in focus or is there a chance i would have to do this over and over again ? Thank you very much for help. Tomas

      It's a random lottery I'm afraid for whether your lens will be perfectly calibrated to your camera out of the box. You /might/ be able to use a Sigma USB dock to try and calibrate it yourself although I'm not sure if this particular lens is compatible with it

    • @rsmith02

      The USB dock works well to calibrate it- I did that with my T3i and it was then fine.

    Always like your reviews- You surely knows well how to cover enthusiast(like me) and professional audience. I felt you weren't really happy about this lens's picture quality. So can you tell me if the 40mm STM from Canon is a better value for money ? I don't mind the extra light advantage, just optical quality. Also how it compares in optical quality to the new 35mm f/2 IS and 28mm f/2.8 IS or older 28mm f/1.8 ignoring the IS capabilities and extra stop advantages of light gathering (considering bokeh would be nice though). Is all these options worth more than 40mm for optical quality. Lets just say all lenses at f/2.8 with no IS. Sorry, I know I'm asking too much, but it would be a great help. :)

    Excellent review! I have a Nikon D7100 and I'm wondering in regards to getting a prime lens that is closest to the 50mm focal length on a Full Frame Sensor/35mm Format, if I should purchase this lens or just get the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G. Since you answered my first question (and I really thank you about it, since this is a pretty old video), I'd like to ask you one more. When you buy let's say a 70mm lens for a full frame sensor, when it comes to canon crop frame sensors it will be 70x1.6=112mm. Whar about those lenses meant to be used with crop frame cameras? If they are 70mm, is it 112mm again? Or is it 70mm for crop frame sensor and something like 43,75mm for a full frame?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  6 лет назад

      No matter whether the lens is designed for full-frame or crop cameras, you always, always multiply by 1.6x, if you're shooting on a crop sensor camera

    Hello Chris. I was wandering whether this lens is comparable to the sigma 17-50, 2.8, as far as bokeh is concerned. I don't really have the ability to test both of them and see by myself. What i am really looking is a fun lens. is the 30 mm on both lenses enjoyable an comparable? or would i find the 2.8 quite doll?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  7 лет назад +3

      This is an f/1.4 lens. So, at the 30mm focal length, your backgrounds would potentially be 4 times more out of focus

    • @iliaszwgrafo
      @iliaszwgrafo 7 лет назад

      I have being trying to find some comparable samples of those two lenses at 30, and i am convinced to go with sigma 1.4. I find it a more "artistic" lens, and prominently a more fun to use. My only concern is the focusing problem that most people are complaining about, but i assume this depends on the copy. Luck is a major issue on this aspect. Nevertheless, i hope you didn't face any of those problems.
      Love your videos. Have health. Cheers.

      I think these are both great lenses and are the two main ones I use. I love the 30 for environmental portraits and as a general walkaround lens and the zoom for when I don't know what the shot will be and have to stay versatile. I don't really care about the characteristics of out-of-focus areas- if that's where my viewers are looking I've failed as a photographer to communicate anything.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 лет назад +5

      +jmz7v Hmm, tricky question - it's up to you really and what you want. I'd probably just go for the 30mm

    • @adrianzarate1571
      @adrianzarate1571 7 лет назад

      jmz7v It depends, on what you're looking to achieve, Zack Arias recommended in one of his videos to buy a 85mm and a 35mm, so you can have something wide and something telephoto in full frame (this advice was on starting in wedding photography), for an aps c camera that'll be 50mm and 20mm, so the ef 50mm f1.8 and the efs 24mm f2.8 would be a nice option, another reviever made a video about having primes "in halves", if you have a 50mm, it goes with a 25mm and a 12mm, or 85mm you can go for 40mm and 20mm. I am currently following both advices, I got myself a 50mm f1.8, but I'm taking some time to decide for either the efs 24 f2.8, or something more versatile, like the tokina 11mm to 20mm f2.8, to have two lenses with the focal distances I'm looking for.
      Another option is to get the efs 60mm f2.8 macro with this sigma 30mm f1.4 and the tokina 11 to 16mm f2.8, but I think it'll be more expensive.
      I'm ok with 2.8, if I buy something faster, I'll use it at 2.8 anyways.
      if you're into street photography, take the crop factor into account, a 20mm will be 36mm and 18mm will be closer to 30mm (28.8mm), a 24 will be 44mm, I would choose the efs 24mm f2.8, because it's fast enough and it's af is accurate and fast, but the best part is it's price, the sigma 18-35mm f1.8 would be ok or better but it's way heavier.

    •  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Adrian, thank you for your response! It's an old comment but I decided to buy the 24mm 2.8 STM well over a year ago and I LOVE IT for its colors, it's my favorite lens and it's really compact, so I now carry my camera to more places, I use it mainly for street photography so it works really well for me.
      For the entire year I was able to save some money and bought the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8, its a really fine and beautiful lens but way larger than the 24mm pancake.
      Hope this comments help someone in the future. ✌️

      Adrian Zarate what lens combination did you go with in the end? I'm in the same dilemma as you are. I like the sigma 18-35, but it's really heavy. I like the samyang prime lenses 14mm f/2,8 and 16mm f/2 but those are heavy as well and both have manual focus. Tokina 11-20 it's a little bit overpriced but it has a nice focal length and nice aperture. The only viable ultra wide lens is canon 10-18mm STM, but it's not very good is low light scenarios...

    I'm experimenting with a Sigma SD 15 (in 2018!), And I wanted a pseudo 50mm.
    Do you advise me to buy this Art version, or its predecessor that you reviewed in the past?
    My doubt is that the SD15 does not have enough pixels to enhance the difference in sharpness, and that vertical chromatic aberration that you have identified it makes me think...
    (On the other hand I could go to a Sigma FF in the future - if it will ever be produced, and Art seems to be FF, I'm in doubt)
    The price difference is not great: I find the old model from 300eur, and in new ART from 400eur...
