- It’s time for a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens review! I’ve been asked a lot of questions about and received a lot of requests for a review of the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 E mount lens for quite some time now, so I figured I’d finally conduct a full review of the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN lens to let you know my honest thoughts. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 footage usually looks solid, but did the Sigma 30mm 1.4 Sony a6500 combo live up to my hopes and exceptions? Today we’ll do a full Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN review so that if you’ve been looking at Sigma 30mm f/1.4 test footage like I did (and still couldn’t decide from those Sigma 30mm f1/.4 test shots like I couldn’t), hopefully my Sigma 30mm f/1.4 vlog footage and this Sigma 30mm f/1.4 review helps you decide if this is the next lens you should add to your filmmaking and photography arsenal!

What are YOUR thoughts on the Sigma 30mm f/1.4?!
everythin exept stabilization but verry great review!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, Addex!
Use it every day, love it... waiting for got 16mm f1.4
BMACadelic bro i really like your cinematic vlogs
The colors and the sharpness are just amazing.
if to buy it together with the kit lens, or if too get the 16mm 1.4 without kit lens and as a portrait lens use the manual nikkor ais 50mm 1.4 with or without speedbooster
The Sigma 30mm got a new firmware in Fev/2018 that upgraded the Manual Focus adjustment. I liked better now than before.
Happy to hear that!
Curious question, i may be stupid when asking this... but how do we shoot with this lens with a set shutter speed and aperture? when shooting on the a6500, do we have to shoot in Manual Focus? In AutoFocus my camera's shutter speed is changing automatically with whatever it focuses on... can we have autofocus WITH a set non-changing shutter speed?
Even though we are here for the lens review...gotta take a moment to acknowledge how fire these colors are! Great image quality in this video!
Right
I got this lens last Christmas due to all the rave reviews. While I haven’t gotten much use out of it for portraits which is my main thing (due to the current circumstances), it has blown me away with the quality, quick AF, and versatility on other subjects such as flowers, plants, etc. Great for Sony a6000.
Very helpful! Question. How close are you sitting to the camera in this video? Like you did, I'm currently using the 50mm 1.8 and love it for the killer bokeh. But, I have to sit about 8 feet from the camera to get a head to elbow shot because it is so zoomed in. I still want bokeh but also want to be able to shoot in some smaller indoor places and not have to be so far back.
Hey there! Glad you liked the video! With the 30mm, I usually sit about 5 feet away and that seems to be the perfect distance. I would highly recommend the 30mm as it’s so versatile and beautiful!
Thanks for the tip. I appreciate the quick response. :-)
Just got this beast. Instantly it became the favorite in my kit
how far are you from your background (e.g. iMac)? just so I can make sense of the depth of field.. thank you
Good question
Thanks for the info man your vids are always very informative and funny lol. Keep em coming.
Thank you so much! Happy to hear it!
I just got mine 30 mm yesterday and i feel really feel cool while shooting but i am afraid as i am using with 6300 so whats ur suggestion .. shd i change the camera body to 6400 or what is ur suggestion please for videos
Covers a lot of ground, informative and hilarious at the same time. Good piece of work!
Thank you for the kind words!
Do you have any issues with the focus, and noise? Thanks great video thumbs up!
How far did you position yourself to camera? I wanna buy this lens for streaming and photo but I wonder about your view how far is camera from you? meter? inch?
Do a review on the new 16mm!! Would love to hear your opinion on it 🙌🏼
I’ll see what I can do!
How do you take stabilised videos with this lens? Hand held shots are very shaky with this one if compared to the Sony 35mm f/1.8.
This lens has OSS built-in! That, in conjunction with the Sony a6500 IBIS, helps to stabilize the footage! For further stabilization, I use a gimbal!
What ND filter you use with this lens? Great review
what filter are you using on this video? and what are the Settings for cinematic videos?
I’m using one of my own LUTs and video on my settings coming soon!
Can I use this lens for my barbershop tutorial videos? For recording and you know I normally have to move the client in different directions while cutting! So I’d love to know if the subject would be cut out from the lense and how far can I zoom in ecc
30mm may not be wide enough for with 6ft, better recommend the 16mm
Great review but whats the cause for that banding from your lamp in the background when you move your head to the left of frame?
Glad you like the video! The “banding” you’re referring to is actually just a result of the way the lamp is. It’s causing a hard shadow on the wall and isn’t compression banding. Hope this makes sense!
Hi,
What the chances of getting the AF to work on the Canon M50?
I'm torn because in MF for stills it's great but racking focus in video tuff to do with camera jitters. Should i Sell and wait for the EOS-M 32MM to arrive or Keep as a bonus lens? (i'll still get the 32mm later) lol.
Hi there... not really understanding your question. Are you asking how this lens would work on your M50? If so, you’ll need a lens converter for that to work. I personally don’t know how well the AF would work on the M50 with a lens converter and this lens, so I wouldn’t be able to say.
I have trouble with a "moving" background !
man, i wll use this sigma art with my mirror dslr which has no af fine adjustment, does it miss autofocus any time? i hate even a little backwards or front focusing while using such a open aperture... Even my 50mm 1.8 stm missaf in low light 1 out of 5 is missaf.ed under the sun. what about this aspect?
4 years later.. I find the exact video im looking for with the exact information i needed! You juist saved me a bunch of cash!
Happy to hear it, brotha!
My absolute favorite lens. I’m looking to get a 85mm for photography but this bad boy does magic w/ video and photos.
Got this since January and it never my Sony A5100. Everytime I use it for portraits, I am still continuously amazed at the IQ it produces. Certainly justified my investment in Sony mirrorless.
The IQ of this lens and the Sony a6500 itself blows me away too, Paul! Such a great lens and such a great camera body!
sony a6500 + Sigma 30mm f1.4 or Sigma 16mm f1.4. which one to buy? If I consider carrying only one lens and no video and some portrait photography as well.
Both lol but If I had to pick one in this type of situation, and you're strictly doing portraits I'd probably go with the 30mm, it seems pretty sharp and a good focal length for that purpose. But if you are doing portraits and might want get some wider shots then the 16mm would be the better choice, and I'd just use ClearImageZoom on shots that I wouldn't want to be as close up on a subject. (maybe up to 1.5 so you don't lose image quality)
I have a Sony 6300 and I used only for foto not videos. Without body stabilization it will come out some blurry images right?
Not necessarily. It all depends on one’s technique and hand steadiness. Without IBIS, OSS always helps!
Really good review, well made video, one point to improve - show more in field tests, b roll when you're talking about it in the video. If you did this you're review would go from 9/10 to 10/10 :)
Thanks, James! I actually consider the cinematic vlogs that I refer to in this video to be my field tests and B-roll, so I felt that burning them into this video would be slightly redundant. I do appreciate the feedback, however, and hope that you find those cinematic vlogs helpful in giving you an idea of what this lens is capable of!
from the photos I've taken, the only lens that appears to come close to or match the Sigma 30 is the 24mm 1.8 ZA. They're both such gorgeous lenses.
I haven't heard much about the 24mm yet, but I agree - the Sigma 30mm is gorgeous!
Ok ok ok - you've sold me. I've been tossing up whether to get the 16mm f1.4 or the 30mm f1.4 but I have decided to go with the 30mm and this was the review that tipped me over the edge 👍
I'd say 30mm(45mm FF equivalent) is more universal, in my opinion. 16mm is very cool as well, but it's a little too wide, for being all-around lens.
@@rafsnchz Thanks for that - I've gone with the 30mm 👍
is it suitable to adapt this lens to my old d5100 using a cheap adapter? i want a sharp images with smooth bokeh
I think that would work, but I can't speak to how well it would work as I've never used this lens on an F-mount camera body!
Would this lens be good for product photography? I heard there is some distortion issues is that true?
Do you mean close-up shots of products? I would recommend a longer lens than 30mm for product close-ups. I use a 90!
Can this lens work on the cannon T7i?
How about sony 35mm f1.8, have you compared it?
Im looking to buy this for my sony a73, do you have any surprises I need to know about with the sony 35mm1.8?
Hello BMAC.... I'm planning for Canon Eos 200D mark II. Is this lens compatible with this camera for streetphotography ??? Need your guidance 🙏
I have a 200d mk1 and a 1st generation(2006-2013) sigma f1.4, 30mm for night street photography, and it's perfectly fine for it but you have to learn to work angles and distance with it as it's focal length is equivalent to 48mm on a full frame camera
Love your review man. Subscribed :)
Thank you so much! Welcome to the channel!
Is the lens good for portrait? Already got Canon 50mm f1.8 with a cheap adapter. Does it fit enough for a full/waist up shots?
I think this lens could be great for portrait shots. It's long enough to not have to get uncomfortably close to your subject and wide enough to still have some detail and character in the background. I hope this helps!
On my crop sensor it's more like a 50mm, having used a 50mm a lot when I first got into photography approx 30 years ago, I find it a boring focul length (bit like this video) though I have no doubts it's a fine lens, Sigma make some great lenses. What's new?
What would be the best lens for vlogging purposes?
I’d recommend either the Sigma 16 (talked about in a video on my channel), or the Sony 10-18. Both are linked on my gear page (see video description box for link!).
Loved the video! I'm currently looking into buying the Sony a6500 in combination with this lens. However, I wonder about the crop factor, as the camera has an APS-C sensor. Do you use an additional 24mm lens when trying to achieve the 30mm look? Any thoughts and advice is greatly appreciated!
Hey there! I don’t use a 24mm lens to try to achieve a 30mm look. I’ve found the 30mm to be very solid for my all-around needs. A 20mm would be required for a true 30mm look, however!
+BMACadelic thank you for your answer! I‘ve decided to get the 30mm. Can’t really go wrong with that and for that price. Great video👍🏻
Happy to hear it!
Loving the fact youre interacting with your viewers. You won my mind-dilemma. Will buy this and use it in combination with a 6300! Got a sub from me :)
Thank you so much! Welcome to the channel!
Is it hard to calibrate it or is it just a bolt on lens? Would it work on the canon 90D?
There’s no calibration needed. Different cameras will require different mount systems. You’ll need EF or EF-S lenses for the 90D.
I bought my A6000 in june of this year and now i'm pretty sure that this 30mm and the 16mm also f1.4 are going to be my next purchases. Thank you for the video!
Those are easily my two favorite lenses right now. You can't go wrong with either of them. Congrats on the a6000 purchase! More videos on the Sony crop sensor cameras and lenses for them coming very soon!
@BMACadelic
Thank you!
At first I almost bought the Sony 18-105 f4 which isn't really good for low light shots and that's why I preferred to spend more now rather than later and loosing money by selling the Sony lense. Any advice on a decent longer focal length lense?
I’ve just discovered your channel and I’m learning so much! You have great videos! What are your thoughts on the Sigma 50mm lens with a 1.4 f stop?
Thank you so much, Mila! I'm very happy to hear that! I personally don't use a 50mm lens as the 30mm lens seems to be my favorite go-to focal length. It depends on what you need the lens for, but I would personally recommend the 30mm as it has never failed me. I hope this helps!
BMACadelic Thanks so much! I have the 50mm lens to shoot fashion looks for IG but I’m thinking I may need to add the 30mm to my lens collection.
Happy to help!
Canon 50mm 1.4 vs sigma 30mm 1.4 wich do you recommend for apsc canon?
It depends on what you're using the lens for. I've found the 30mm focal length to be better for most situations on an APS-C camera.
In this video .... Are these a colors of sony cameras?? Or it's color grading effect
This video is color graded with one of my own LUTs.
We want to record the birth of our first baby with our Canon T7i, would you recommend this lens for that?
This lens won’t be compatible on a Canon without some kind of lens converter, unfortunately...
Hi,
I have an issue with my sigma 30mm f1.4 dc dn (sony a6500)
when I want to touch to focus, it shows where the focus will be, and then I have to mid-push shutter button for the focus to take effect
I would really appreciate it if you can give me tip
* also AF system in my settings is grayed out, and when I select it, it says "invalid with this lens"
** edit: It does work when I'm shooting video, but doesn't when capturing photos
Are you using this lens on an E-mount camera body or are you using an adapter?
I'm using it on sony a6500 .
Actually I managed to fix the touch focus problem and it does work well now.
But still, in the menu, the first camera tab, the focus tab, first option there is called "AF System ". and it's grayed out. It's like unavailable. when I choose it, a screen pops up and says "invalid with this lens"
That's interesting. That sounds like there's something going wrong. Perhaps a bad connection/defective piece of equipment? Do you have an electronics store nearby that could diagnose the issue, perhaps?
How will this work on the sonyA73? we are shooting a short film and will need to be on gimbal with AF and manual.
Will I need an adapter for it?
Oh and would I need image stab if the sony already has it built in?
Hi, Jeff! I probably wouldn't recommend using this lens on a Sony a7iii as the a7iii is full-frame camera and this lens is meant for an APS-C camera. You will likely experience vignetting on the corners of the frame when using this lens with the Sony a7iii.
so maybe I should stick with the sony 35mm f1.8?
If the Sony 35mm f/1.8 works for you right now, I would probably just stick with that.
Hey does anyone know if this lens suppose to zoom in and out. Just received mine and I cant zoom in or out with it. Not sure if thats how it is or is broken?
It is a prime lens. There is no zoom functionality. Hope this helps!
Great review, this is the first video of yours that I've watched and I'm liking your content. Just subbed.
Thank you! Welcome to the channel!
Sigma 30 1.4 or Sony 50 1.8? Has anyone tried both?
You didnt mention how loud the autofocus noise is in video mode and how it gets picked up by the mic
I don't use the onboard microphone, that's why. I highly recommend an external microphone for anybody who wants usable audio from their camera.
BMACadelic What do you use, can you hear the autofocus noise when using a Rode Videomic Pro
That’s what I use and no, I certainly can’t. Perhaps your lens is defective?
Sigma 30mm f1.4 or canon 50mm f1.4 are both same in quality ?
I wouldn't quite say that. They're both different focal lengths from different glass manufacturers. They suit different needs and have different mounts.
is this good for outdoor sports at night? I will be taking video not photos.
I would generally suggest a longer lens for sports video, perhaps 90mm+.
Between this one and the Samyang (Rokinon) 35mm f1.4, what are your thoughts? Because the pricetag isn't really the same... Like the Sigma is half the price og the Samyang, and 4 times cheaper than the Zeiss. I was thinking about getting the Samyang but you made me doubt now :P
Personally, I haven't used the Rokinon 35 as I haven't had a need to. This Sigma is still my go-to lens and I can honestly say that it rarely, if ever, lets me down. If price is a concern, I definitely say save the money and go with the Sigma. I have a hard time believing you'll be disappointed. :-)
BMACadelic thank you for your answer, I will think about it then :)
This or the 24mm 1.4 Canon lens?
Is this the Art version?
Is this for a canon 80D
This was such an informative video. I do makeup videos and currently using the canon 80D with and 50mm 1.8 and 17-55mm lens. I’m looking to upgrade. would you recommend this? Thank you
You sold me on it. Buying one now.
Happy to hear it! It's a phenomenal lens! Still my go-to!
I cant zoom with this lens as i turn the thting around it . Why?
This is a Prime lens, not a Zoom lens.
Whats a good nd filter for this lens?
The Variable ND Filter I use can be found on my gear page! For the price, I highly recommend it. BMACadelic.com/gear
I'm debating between the 30mm or the 16mm for photography I have a sony a6500 any advice?? And is the 16mm to long on the Sony a6000 series?
The 16mm, if anything, will be too wide for you - definitely not too long. Remember, a "long" lens is a lens with a longer focal length. If you don't have a 30mm yet, I would strongly recommend that lens be your next lens to purchase. It is very versatile and this particular 30mm lens discussed in this video is still my favorite lens for the Sony a6500!
I had this lens with a GH5. It's amazing to make cinematic videos with this lens!!
I completely concur!
I want to by the Sigma, for my A6600. but I am afraid for the autofocus , I want to used for moving people , like fashion shows in low light
Should I get the Sony a6500 with the kit lens or the a6300 with the Sony 35mm 1.8???
Depends on what your needs are! I'm a fan of prime lenses. They are usually a tad sharper.
Do you have to buy an adaptor to fix the 35mm on the a6500 ? cause i think 35mm are made for A camera and A6500 is an E one. Many thanks and keep up dude !
Dude, you could sell ice to Eskimos. Good vid. Closes the deal for me. Thank you. Subscribed.
Happy to hear it! Thank you!
hey, the quality of the video is super nice, while you talk the color grading is very nice, the sharpness.. but there is some weird sort of motion bluring, smudging I don't know how to call it in english. In how many fps did you record? Or maybe it's not due to low fps but something with the shutter speed?
Thanks, looking forward to hear you, cause I'm very curious!
Thanks for the kind words! No idea what you’re referring to with “weird motion blurring,” though. All my settings for this video were correct. 23.976 FPS and 1/50th shutter speed!
BMACadelic you know the feeling of 60 fps videos right? It's super smooth and fast but on the other hand it has this weird TV look which I personally don't like, but here I think there are some lags in between frames. Especially when you gesticulate with your hands. Maybe 1/50 shutter speed is too slow? It was visible on my dell uhd 27" display now while I'm commenting on my mobile phone it looks ok.
I always prefer to record in 30 fps and export in 24 fps
I feel you on that. I’m not a fan of 60 FPS unless it’s sports or live streams. I double-checked and don’t have any lag between frames, though, and 1/50th shutter speed definitely isn’t too low. You’ll want a shutter speed as close to twice your frame rate whenever possible to preserve natural motion blur. If what you’re referring to is not visible on your phone, your display probably has refresh rate settings that are artificially inserting frames to remove motion blur. Many displays have this technology built in. I always turn it off because of the issues you’re alluding to.
Is it advisable using this lens on a full frame body?
No. This is a crop sensor lens, unfortunately.
This is supposed to work with micro 4/3 cameras, why is it too big to fit into my Olympus O-M-D E-M10 Mark III camera? Sorry, new at this... any help would be appreciated!!
Make sure you get the right lens mount variation for your particular camera, and keep in mind that this is an APS-C lens, and not a Full Frame lens. IS that’s what’s going on?
BMAC Yeah I think it was because I bought the sigma 30mm lens for the Sony E mount on amazon instead of the one specifically for micro 4/3 cameras so that was probably it! Thank you
Would you recommend this lens for car photography? Looking for sharp subject with that bokeh back ground
I think it would work! Is there a restriction on how far from the cars you can be?
BMAC I’m not 100% sure, I have a 50mm 1.8 lens and I can’t get bokeh with the entire car showing
What are your exposure settings? Switching from a 50mm f/1.8 to this 30mm f/1.4 isn't going to make a huge difference if you want shallow depth of field. Your aperture is likely not open enough when taking shots or the cars aren't far away enough from the intended background.
Thank you so much this was so helpful
Happy to help, Freddie!
Hello!
I'm about to buy a copy of this lens. How good is this for wedding photography?
I love it! I think 30mm is a great focal length, especially with it being a 50mm equivalent on APS-C.
@@itstheBMAC Thanks for your answer :)
Really really nice video. Subscribed!
Thank you! Welcome to the channel!
Great Video!
I bought it today and am noticing a noisy and slow auto focus - is that just me?
Make sure your autofocus settings are set correctly! Congrats on the purchase!
You got me subbed, I’m a fan now 😅
Welcome to the channel!
Can this lens be used on my Full Frame A7ii???
I wouldn’t recommend it. You’ll likely experience vignetting as this is meant to be a crop sensor lens.
Thanks for sharing your opinion!!
Happy to help!
what nd filter did you use for this lens?
Explained HERE! ->
ruclips.net/video/ek1jTTb4muc/видео.html
How wide is this for crop sensor? (I’m using 80d)
I believe the 35mm equivalent of this lens would be 48mm on the 80D.
Hey men
What picture profile do you use and what lut to color grade
Hey, L! I use Cine4 and to color grade I use my own LUTs that I have not yet released. Hopefully soon!
BMACadelic can you please describe you pp settings 🙏🙏🙌🙌
Hopefully soon, yes!
is this video filmed with the lens zoomed all the way out?
This is a prime lens. There is no "zoom" function on it. Hope this helps!
BMAC it does, thanks so much!
What filter are you using
Using my own LUTs!
Do u use the crop sensor ?
Not sure what you mean... the crop sensor is built-in to the sensor itself. It can not be turned on/off.
would you recommend this lens for newborn photography ? Lemme know your thoughts.
Absolutely! It's a fantastic lens for nearly all purposes.
I'm about to purchase this bad boy of a lens. I've seen what it could do on a video shoot. I put it on my 80d and saw how crystal clear the imaging was. It made the 50 1.8 stm look obsolete. Plus i need a 1.4 lens anyhow. I was looking at the 50 1.4 from canon and the sigma is right in the same ballpark of price range with it. So its no brainer which one I should get.
I love this lens! You'll be very happy with it I think!
You actually made me put the final decision on purchasing this lens. It looks so much sharper than the 50mm 1.8 STM Lens. I may just end up selling it. I like the headroom of 30mm and the extra stops for more light.
Happy to hear it! Congrats, man! Put that baby to good use!
Can this lens be used on an A6000?
Yes!
Great review. Thanks
Happy that you enjoyed it, P! Thanks for watching!
Please answer me. No information on the Internet. After Internet investigations, I only want this lens. I have a Canon m50 camera. Do you have any idea if this lens can fit the camera with an adapter ????
Don't quote me on this, but I don't think that will be possible on the M50 as I am unaware of any EF-M to Sony E Mount adapter. There are EF-M to EF/EF-S adapters, but if you really wanted to use this Sony E Mount lens on the M50, you'd likely have to use two different lens adapters (EF-M to EF/EF-S, and then EF/EF-S to Sony E) which, in theory, might work, but I wouldn't recommend it. It would be expensive and you may lose features of the lens (i.e. good autofocus). You could try going for an EF-M to a MFT adapter and use the MFT version of this lens on it but I have no experience in doing so. Hope this helps!
Oh and great video!!. I will continue to follow.
How do I know such lenses will fit my camera body?
Make sure the mount of the lens matches the mount of your camera body. Also, keep in mind that this is an APS-C crop sensor lens and not a full frame lens.
Love your presentation!
Thanks so much!
Is this review on the first model of the 30mm from Sigma?
Not sure what you mean, Dale. This is a review on the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN lens - not the DC HSM. Does that answer your question?
@@itstheBMAC as in the first 30mm lens model Sigma produced. I know their later "art" version for ful frame was a success, but have seen some pretty bad reviews on their first model with regards to auto focus and the images being a little soft
I see what you're saying. I've only ever tried, tested, and used this "Contemporary" lens and I have to say it's probably my favorite go-to lens for the Sony a6500. I actually have another entire video dedicated to explaining why! Perhaps that'll help you out as well as this video. You can check it out here: ruclips.net/video/5DebghysPVs/видео.html
a little late but is auto focus noisy ?
Use the a6500 with Sigma 30mm and it’s phenomenal!!!
Happy to hear it, Dwight Ramos!
Hello! Do you think guys is good for travelling? I'm a bit scared for the lack of zooming... Thank you!
The 30mm focal length is a very versatile focal length and I highly recommend it for traveling!
Does it fit to canon camera?
Only if you get the right mount for your Canon. Please pay attention to the mounts that you’ll be using. 👍🏼
do you think this is good for wedding videos
In terms of focal length and the wide aperture for better filming in low light, I, yes, could recommend this lens for wedding videos.
Did you shot with canon?
I shoot with Sony! I used to shoot with Canon before making the switch to Sony.
It's been a long time and a lot of crazy BS. When APSC was new I read an article taking about how great this would be, because you don't need as much glass, the price would be greatly reduced. Instead of great discount lenses to go with the cropped sensor companies are charging just as much or more than full frame. E mount lenes by Sony are the biggest rip off I have ever seen selling lenses that should cost $100 Max for 4 times as much.
Sigma thank you, thank you, humbly thank you. To are not given a good price for a lens like this you are giving a fantastic price.
Even the 60mm f2.8 E mount art lens is absolutely fantastic, this is what APSC should have been about. Now we get the mind blowingly great contemporary lenses, with hints of 50mm f1.4 coming soon. I'm finally getting what I want at a fair price, love it!
Happy to hear that you’re enjoying Sigma lenses!
