    Such a nice lens. Many wouldn't care for using this on full frame since it's not designed for 35mm sensors but on my canon 6d its just incredible.. there's minimal vignetting that can be easily removed.. the look is pretty awesome.

    Yo thank you for putting this lense on my radar. I'd been considering the 24mm for a while but finding this video really made me reconsider. Great tests and comparisons! That zoom test with the 50mm and low light test with the 24 really sold me on this lens. The 30 mm is the Perfect happy medium

    This is an absolutely beautiful 30mm lens with excellent build. Sigma made a beautiful design and included a fast autofocus motor. The current lens design called sigma trio does not have the same build quality and focus system. Tamron has made something similar with a 60mm macro lens which is also a well-built lens with unique features. I'm lucky enough to own the two lenses that make an interesting pair and that are actually two hidden gems.

    I grew to hate my Nifty 50 and just taking pictures in general. I've always appreciated Sigma lens, but didn't have the cash to buy one. Well, let's just say you convinced me to get the 30mm Art lens for my Rebel T5. I can finally take decent photos without having to move all the back since the Nifty 50's frame was always too tight for what I needed for my crop sensor lens. I cannot wait until my 30mm comes in!
    I'm really hoping it'll get me to go out and take photos again and to love photography again. Thank you!

    You are not being weird ;-). Got this lens back in the days for my 7D. AF wasnt as fast as on my 60mm EF-S, BUT. For Portrait that lens was a dream - my old 7D felt like a new cam. And yeah i got used to the slower AF (Again on my old 7D, prob better on newer bodies). About to adapt it with a speed booster on an older GH5... 42mm F1.0 - MF only. Can´t wait to test it out.

    Josh, I have a very small room and I make guitar contents. I have a canon 77D which is a crop sensor lens. Do you recommend I should get this to get the full guitar and myself in the video? I have a 50mm but for my small room that only captures my face and not my guitar. Let me know and thanks for this video

    • @JoshWiniarski
      @JoshWiniarski  3 года назад +1

      Great question! Depends on the size of the room so it's tricky for me to say...Do you have access to any other lenses such as a 24mm or an 18-55 that you could check with? While this lens (the 30mm) is great for lowlight and a shallow depth of field, it may not be wide enough. I'd suggest checking out the Canon 24mm f/2.8 STM, the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8, as well as the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 to be on the safe side. Having everything in the shot sounds more important in your specific situation. Hope this helps!

    I've been thinking about this lens. Also thinking about the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8. The zoom range is useful and the aperture is still bright. But the 30mm f/1.4 seems amazing too. Definitely wouldn't get both. Have you looked at the 18-35?

    • @JoshWiniarski
      @JoshWiniarski  3 года назад +2

      I actually use the 18-35 a couple times a month although I don't own it and haven't done a direct comparison. I think they're very comparable lenses, but in my opinion the 30mm is what you go with if you want maximum lowlight performance/depth and you're pretty set on a 30mm focal length. Maybe that's what you like for portraits, or for interview setups where you wouldn't ever use 18mm. If you already own a wide angle lens this makes a lot of sense as well. The 18-35 is again more of an all-arounder. Honestly, the 18-35 is probably the better lens for most people, but when I bought this I already owned a 14mm prime, and I wanted a lens for portraits, talking head youtube shots, and amazing lowlight so I went for the 30mm. Both are great though, I'm a huge fan of Sigma lenses, hope this helps!

    Great video Josh!, 2 questions,..I just got the Sigma 17-50, If I use the 17-50 at 30mm it will do the same performance as the 30mm Sigma lens?, I know that probably on the low light will be a difference, but I also tried the Viltrox Speed booster on the 17-50 Sigma but this one gave me a weird circular crop around, any advice about this issue?

    • @exquisitewidget4227
      @exquisitewidget4227 3 года назад +2

      The sigma 17-50 is made for a smaller sensor. Effectively a speed-booster will make the sensor act if it was larger than it was. This means you are using more of the lens than intended by the manufacturer, which causes the circular crop, called a vignette. That circular crop is just the lens barrel, which isn’t originally intended to be seen. This same thing will happen if you use the speed booster with the sigma 30mm. For a speed booster to work properly, you need to pair a full frame lens with it. Because full frame lenses are intended to be used by larger sensors, you can use a speed booster and essentially replicate a full frame camera, hence why you would need lenses that are made for full frame. And about your first question, if you’re shooting at f2.8 on the sigma 30 then it will perform nearly the same as the 17-50. However, if you want more creative control/better low light/more shallow depth of feild, then the 30mm will absolutely out perform the 17-50. I should say the 17-50 will definitely serve you better if versatility is what you’re after, but if your situation doesn’t require that same versatility, then the 30mm will do you wonders!!! If you want the same look as the sigma 30mm, you can simply buy a canon 50mm 1.8 for far cheaper and use your speedbooster with it. There may be some autofocus issues though.
      Hope some of this makes sense😂 Maybe Josh will see this and have some more to add!
      Best of luck with your photography/videography endeavors!!! Happy shooting man😊

      Will caliberation fix speed? Or is it only for accuracy? And how do I caliberate?

    • @FabioRubini
      @FabioRubini 3 года назад

      @@ShebeerPrince for calibrate the lens (focus) you must have the sigma dock. With that you can update the firmware on the lens or micro adjust the focus. For focusing speed you can change that on the camera. Some does that, i don’t know if the 200d is part of these cameras.

      Hey LF, I know you asked this question 2 months ago, but here goes. I use this lens on my M50, (the Sigma 30mm EF-M version) photos and videos. I use it for the talking head part of my YT vids (well, I'm starting to use it). My 15-45 kit lens just wasn't cutting it with its smaller aperture and I couldn't get that awesome bokeh to get me to stand out from the background. This 30mm Sigma lens gives me all I was hoping for. As you know, if you own the M50, it's not the best in low light, but with the large opening of the 1.4, I no longer have problems with noise in my videos. The dual pixel autofocus is super fast and has no problem with the lens. The Sigma works flawlessly with the M50. Hope that helps.

    Here’s a question! If I was to purchase this lens for a 77D and then upgrade to a Mirrorless R10 with a cropped sensor would the lens behave the same using the RF-EF adapter as both cameras have a cropped sensor? Thanks! 👍🏼

    • @JoshWiniarski

      It should behave identical. I used the sigma 35mm (full-frame version) on my EOS R with the adapter and it works flawlessly.

    @ 5:32 This Sigma 30mm lens is actually designed for crop sensor cameras. So would you still multiply by the crop factor to get the resulting focal length on a crop sensor camera, wouldn't the focal length just be 30mm on a crop sensor camera?

    • @JoshWiniarski
      @JoshWiniarski  3 года назад +3

      Crop sensor cameras always have the crop factor. This is a common misconception but really easy to test if you have any full frame lenses with similar focal lengths to a crop sensor one. For instance if you take an EF-S 18-55 and EF 50mm theyll have the same image at 50mm. Hope this helps!

      @@pombear127 Of course! It all starts to add up when you compare lenses too. The Wide angle for crop sensors is 10-18mm which = 16-29 (full frame version is 16-35). Look at lenses like the 24mm pancake lens and multiply it by 1.6 and you get 38.4mm (the full frame version is 40mm) etc.

      @EastEndery The 35mm is more expensive that the 30mm because it is meant for full-frame cameras. Its bigger, has more glass, and can be used on full-frame bodies while the 30mm is only for crop-sensors.
