    This episode aired in ‘98 when I was 6. It was my first episode of Buffy and this one line took on a sort of mantra for me growing up. Even in the face of total isolation you always have yourself to rely on.

      @robnowaczewski5351 Год назад +4

      @@rayswartz3378 I feel like the parallel between his Sire - Darla, and his Choice - Buffy is pretty blatant. He loved Darla because he had to, he loved Buffy because he chose to. And Darla, when confronted by an Angelus who couldn't be what she expected [because of curse - completely outside his control] IMMEDIATELY threw him away. While, Buffy, after everything Angelus did to her [because of actions outside of his control] could be expected to throw the past away & instead try to save Angel anyway [because he - in effect - had repented from his vampire/demonic ways]. There is an undercurrent, I think, but I can't quite vocalize about Humanity's ability to forgive awful past actions of someone in order to value their present actions and who they are now, while for the soulless, you're only what they know about you [no, actually they only value what they expect of you, and you damned well better not deviate from that expectation]. Humans [hm, maybe Joss is being a little too humanist and seeing a little too much nobility in people here] can see you for what you've become, the vampires can only see what you MUST be and if you fail that litmus test, it's instant rejection.
      Hmm. I still feel like I'm not articulating this exactly. But, I maintain that the Darla/Buffy comparison was there prior to being spelled out by BECOMING.

    • @bobbyclarkston8836
      @bobbyclarkston8836 Год назад +3

      The parallel with the, ‘close your eyes is beautiful. Darla tells him that and then takes his mortal life, while Buffy says it before taking his immortal life. Classic Whedon.

    Love this episode - the Buffy + Spike team-up, Joyce and Spike chatting, Joyce *finally* finding out, "the police of Sunnydale are deeply stupid," another tease of the Mayor, Dru hypnotizing Giles (and getting a bit too into character), "Then why would they make you see me?", SMG's stellar acting throughout - it really was great, especially for its time.
    Whistler is still an incredibly random addition dropped into this two-parter, and even on 90s television sets it was really obvious that was a stunt-double (with a receding hairline) doing the sword fighting, but overall a great end to a great season. "Take all that away...and what's left?" "Me." A line so good Whedon would use it again (a variaiton of it at least) in Avengers. Legitimately an incredible moment though.
    Speaking of incredible, the music. Buffy always has great music, but the Bangel theme is one of the best, and it's use here is devastating. Emotional damage to the max.
    Xander gets a lot of hate for telling Buffy that Willow said to kick his ass, and while there are things to hold against Xander, I really don't think this is one of them. If Buffy thought there was a chance Angel might come back, she wouldn't have been able to fight him resolved to kill him, which is what she needed to beat him.
    Also, last season finale we learn Vampire's don't have breath, which is why Xander has to do CPR on Buffy instead of Angel. Despite this we hear vampire's panting out of breath numerous times in the series, and Spike chokes Dru out when that shouldn't be possible. Oops.
    Absolutely incredible finale. Honestly, every season finale for Buffy is a banger, even for the shakier seasons, to the point where this one somehow only ranks 5/7 for me.

    What a reaction. Any faint resentment I had about Passion is completely gone.
    MEANWHA. This episode, in the context of what we've seen so far, is why Buffy was for a time the biggest thing on television. Joss Whedon has many problems but the man knew how to douse a set up in tension. This episode is still one of my all-time TV moments. It lays out the core of the show. Heroes are people who dedicate themselves to doing what has to be done, no matter what the cost to them is. This episode is when Buffy becomes a hero. It's absolutely brutal.
    Lots of things mentioned in this reaction (can't wait to watch the full video when I have the time) which will absolutely come up in Season 3. Honestly, 3 as a season is Buffy at its absolute peak, but this season is, like, 95% of the way there. Absolutely epic. Cheers gang, can't wait for next week.
    Oh, btw on Snyder, it's honestly pretty simple - not every villain is a literal monster. Some people just suck, and Snyder, as much as he is entertaining to watch (shout out to Armin Shimerman aka Quark from Star Trek), sucks

    Becoming part 2 was a terrific ending to S2 setting up the brilliant S3. Here we see Buffy faced with the ultimate heart breaking choice to kill her lover or save the world. We of course know she will make the right choice. Willow comes through at the end, but Buffy has to go through with the final act. So poignant at the end when from afar Buffy sees her friends but decides to leave Sunnydale, Joyce too is so regretful as she knows Buffy is now gone after their terrible row, all against the backdrop of Sarah McLachlan's beautiful haunting ballad Full Of Grace. I think we can see you are all now hooked on the show, as are all reactors that enter 'The Buffyverse' and it only gets better.

    Notes: Watching the show when it was new, it seemed to take forever to get to this point, so I was surprised when I got the DVD sets for each season, that this episode was only in, Season Two! At least she didn't begin as a high school freshman. Sophomore, was bad enough.
    Season Three, yay! Closer to the graduation ceremony episode and to her college years, when she's no longer a minor.

    The ritual just ripped Angel's (Liam's) soul back out of wherever it went, and stuffed it back into his animated corpse.
    So, Angel is back inside, struggling with the vampire demon -- only now in hell.

    so now it depends on who is prime? is buffy is prime, then nothing will happen, if kendra was prime? then it might trigger a new one

    We finally see Buffy confront police, and Snyder hints through a phone call that there is more going on behind the scenes higher up.
