    Buffy's fight in this one is one of my favourites in the whole show. Like you guys pointed out, it feels like a cathartic moment for her. She's been holding back and now she gets to let loose, and the choreography really emphasises that. Plus, by this point you can really see just how far the show's fight scenes have come from Season 1!

  • @micahnieman673
    @micahnieman673 Год назад +28

    There's so much to like about this episode. One of my favorite things is the conflict between Jayce and Giles. They both approach it like adults, and it's so nice to see adults approach a personal conflict in a grown way. Joyce directly tells Giles that she's upset with him, and why. Giles acknowledges his fault, accepts appropriate blame, resolves to improve. Both remain willing to interact and work with each other for the sake of their shared goal of helping Buffy, all without holding a grudge or getting salty with each other. It's solid conflict resolution between two actual adults.

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 Год назад +2

      Keep in mind though that since the problem concerns someone's child, a parent not trusting the adult who was at fault is completely understandable and not a sign of immaturity. In the context of the show, it makes sense for Joyce to not completely cut ties w/ Giles since he's not just a librarian but a Watcher. He knows way more about slayers than the police do.

    Making a vamp 101
    1. Drain a victim to near death
    2. Have them feed on vampire blood
    3. Victim goes into death like coma.

    The vampire mythology changes depending on which powers & restrictions the author wants to use.* For instance in some stories daylight only weakens them and does not set them on fire, Sometimes silver bullets will work against them (almost always applies to werewolves). Vampires can turn into bats & wolves - never seen in Sunnydale. One thing that apparently applies to the transformation here is they're usually buried before the full transformation takes place (however remember the guy who turned in the morgue and the girl in the funeral parlor). Classic tales claim they sleep in a coffin and the coffin must have their "burial earth" in it - so not just any coffin will do. We never see Angel, Spike or Drusilla napping in a coffin.
    *So you will find that what vampires can do and what can stop them is different for Bram Stoker (Dracula), Anne Rice (Interview), Stephanie Meyers (Twilight) and Joss Whedon. After watching so many seasons of Buffy & Angel I feel cheated when the forehead transformation doesn't happen.

    Ok it’s pretty easy. Vampires feed on people all the time but not everyone that a vampire feeds on turns into a vampire. In order for that to happen the vampire needs to feed off someone then let that person drink some of their blood. Most of the people getting attacked by vampires won’t turn into one, they’ll just die from having their blood drained. As for why so many vampires get buried and presumably a funeral is probably just more of a plot hole done for dramatic effect

    "Where did the stake go?"
    Basically whenever you stake a vampire, if you don't remove the stake from the body, it dusts with the vamp. There are a few screw-ups where that doesn't exactly happen...someone is holding it, but they haven't pulled it out...but that's basically how it works.
    In-World reason? Never explained.
    TV reason? The special effects of "dusting" was easier if they didn't try to remove things from people's hands, or leave stakes in mid air when a vampire died.

    In the first episode Buffy explains that in order to be turned into a vampire, a vampire sucks their victims blood, and in order for the kill to not just be said random kill, the victim is forced to drink from the vampire while at the point of near death. It hasn't been mentioned yet how long it takes for them to wake up a vampire.
    Buffy was in LA. Not New York.
    Chantarelle, Lily, and now Anne!!! I was wondering if The Normies would recognize her before or even after her explanation.
    I feel like Joyce projects her guilt of onto blaming Giles so she doesn't have to deal with all the truth Buffy said of "you still haven't figured it out," her not knowing her daughter, and kicking her out. I get why Joyce is upset, but I feel it is all misplaced issues/guilt, also. Also, in the origin comic, movie, and script Joyce ignored her daughter and only started parenting because Buffy got in trouble for saving kids at her former school's dance and accused of the damage because she couldn't explain why she caused said damage. From the start of S1, Joyce has shown moments that prove she is only at that point learning how to parent for the first time. This is only a year and a half after the series premiere. Joyce should have sixteen years of experience at this point. She may love her daughter, but she has a ways to go before she catches up to where she should be on parenting.
    Cordelia and Xander's make-out music made it seem more comedic than romantic to me, no matter how The Normies wanted it to be.
    Best lines and moment: "Breaking into your office and going through your private files." "What's with all the sin?" "I'm Buffy, the vampire slayer. And you are?" "In case we die." And the moment Lily interrupts Ken's villain monologue by pushing him from the walkway. I never really thought the Ghandi joke was funny. Just odd. Different brand of humor, I guess.
    The "hell society" isn't under LA. It is a different dimension. The black goo was the gateway portal. The hellmouth attracts otherworldly creatures, but it doesn't mean monsters and such aren't in other cities and towns, and that their aren't other dimensions. It's not a "big jump." It's an extension of the universe the TV Show takes place in.

    Making a vamp is your basic “vamp drinks from you, you drink from them, you die and then rise as a vamp”. Now as far as how long it takes, there’s not a lot of consistency. Some vamps rise quicker because the plot needs that to be the case, and some take longer because the plot needs that. But it seems to typically take a few days to rise which is why many vamps are already in the ground.

  • @skyedestiny
    @skyedestiny Год назад

    The turning process is that the vampire sucks someone's blood and brings them near death. Then, the vampire gives the victim their blood. (so it's an exchange a la Anne Rice.) Except unlike Anne Rice's vampires, the ones in the Buffyverse usually need some time to just be dead after that lol
    So, typically, if a vampire cares enough to turn a person, they would bring them to someplace safe so that they can have their time until they reawaken. But as we saw with Ford in season 2, with so much time between death and awakening, it's possible for police or family to find the person's body and have them properly buried, not knowing that they were turned. (If I had to guess, while no one really talks about it, I think death by vampire in Sunnydale is common enough that no one really blinks at it (even if they don't know for sure that it is vampires doing it, if that makes sense).) Thus why we have a lot of vampires popping out of graves.

    Mark 8:27. By the way! I didn't notice when it was on television, but when viewing this episode on the DVD, when the two girls are side by side, walking away from the camera, I finally noticed just how petite, SMG-"BAS", is! (That was after I learned that it meant, "short", rather than, "not obese". 😁 ) It was a butt size comparison moment, because it didn't make sense to me that, one's butt would be bigger than the other's, unless it was a camera angle thing, or something odd like that. 🤔
    It belatedly made sense to me, once I accepted that, SMG, was simply just that petite! As a waitress, she's probably not wearing high heels, that petite women usually wear to compensate for their height difference.
    On a side note. When I saw, Nana Visitor, as her "ST:DS9" character, wearing her uniform but, bunched up with her knees up to her chin, because she was in a brig cell, I was taken aback to see how big or high, her platform boots were! They didn't look very military practical! But once I met her in person and saw how short she was compared to me and her then husband, Alexander Siddigg, I realized that those boots had been another height compensation gimmick for the camera's perspective. 🖖

    Episode 1 season 1 Buffy says " to make you a vampire, they have to suck your blood and then you have to suck their blood. It's just this whole big sucking thing. Mostly they're just going to kill you" then you need to be dead a day to then rise as a new vampire

    I know it's not a very important thing from the episode, but when Xander stakes the vampire and Cordelia doesn't get staked after the vampire is dusted, I think we've seen in other episodes that any object (including clothes and weapons) that the vampire is holding at the time they die, disappears with them as well. Which is weird because with stakes that only happens *sometimes* , other times the stake (specially Mr. Pointy) doesn't disappear. Okay I don't even know what I'm saying, many stakes don't disappear, some do. Weird.

    There are many supernatural things in the world, Spike is somewhere, there is invisible people being trained, there is the council of watchers dealing with other minor things. Bus these things are rare. In Sunnydale it is a weekly thing, while the rest of the world has that once every 3 months or 5 years or maybe once every 300 years. It took 3 months for Buffy to have to deal with something, if she was still in Sunnydale, she would have had to be doing something every other week.
    I think this episode was a metaphor for bad jobs that people without direction or a clear sense of self get pulled into.

I hope y'all don't get as pissed off as most of us were when we first watched it (technically is not a spoiler because you probably posted it 2 weeks ago already). This season is so good btw.

    To be turned into a vampire, they have to drink your blood. When your heart starts to slow, they have to stop and make you drink their blood. Usually you lay there for a while , ( sometimes long enough so that people have Time to burry you) cause it takes a while before you wake up a vampire … wherever you happen to be …

    And now we go from one of my favourite Buffy episodes ever straight into my favourite season ever. Season 3 is straight fire gang. Best villain, great character development for basically everybody, some amazing one-offs and a phenomenal season-long arc. And at the end of it all, the greatest horror of all - graduation!
    On Micky's point at the top, the show took a while to figure out where it really stood on whether Angel-with-a-soul is a completely different person to Angel-without-a-soul/Angelus. Later on, and especially in his spinoff, the writers got a much better handle on how the mechanics of all that worked, but early on it's still a bit messy, so it's totally legit to be kind of on the fence. But I do agree with Pat (almost can't believe I'm saying this) that evil Angel is dramatically a much more interesting character than good Angel early on. Early goodside Angel is basically just David Boreanaz good looks in a black trenchcoat. As the shows go on, they find ways to make him more compelling even when he has a soul.
    MEANWHA.
    The Gandhi line feels to me like it came from the same Joss Whedon who wrote "Do you know what happens to a toad when it's struck by lightning? The same thing that happens to everything else." Ah well, this episode is still great.
    Very minor spoiler about Lily - she does, indeed, do well. She shows up in a few episodes later on and we see that Buffy giving her the Anne identity - and killing Ken - really did do her some lasting good.
    Oh, and here's how the vampirisation process works - get your blood mostly but not entirely drained, the vampire draining you has you drink their blood, you then still die of blood loss, but a little while later (long enough to be buried) you rise from the grave as a vampire

    • @Talisguy
      @Talisguy Год назад +1

      I think the Gandhi line works better than the toad one - Lily at least calls out the fact that it doesn't make sense, and a bad line is much easier to accept if I know it's not meant to be a zinger - but it feels a bit like he put that in as a placeholder, couldn't think of a proper last line and then lampshaded its badness as a way to try and save face.

    • @tariqthomas9090
      @tariqthomas9090 Год назад +3

      I love the Gandhi line because it’s hilariously adolescent. I could totally see a teenager saying that right before they do something violent.
      The toad line just irks me because she literally could have said “He croaks”. It was RIGHT THERE.
      Like it’s still a very cheesy kinda bad line, but at least it makes sense.

    The nice thing about a group is you get both sides of the mom argument. Seems more fair somehow. Also don't worry, angel/Angelous stuff isn't spoilers, he not only spelled it out in episode 7 but Giles and Buffy in season 1 and 2 cover it in the harvest and lie to me. Tho I agree, like Angelous way more. As for the series that could be about any point in his life or place so try not to have expectations. There are spoiler stuff in the two series as they were made at the same time so you still have to watch them together.

    The Hellmouth attracts the supernatural, but from where? It has to exist elsewhere in order to be drawn to Sunnydale.
    And as for Joyce vs Giles, well. It's much easier to send a young girl into battle day after day if her parents and people who care about thew don't know about it. How exactly is she protecting anyone around her by not telling them what's really going on? You protect people by arming them with knowledge and garlic. No, the only reason the Watchers insist that the Slayer with the parents who are not already in the know keep this a secret is so they could control her more efficiently.

    Lily/Anne does actually return, in Angel she becomes a recurring character!

  • @killianlpc
    @killianlpc Год назад +4

    Anne is a terrific opener to a near flawless S3. At the start we can see the haphazard amateurish attempts by The Scoobies to patrol with Oz's awful attempt to throw the stake etc. Once we see Buffy as Anne the waitress, we know she can't continue like this and has to help people as is her vocation. Lily of course was in S2 and recognises Buffy, the two of them have a similar story. The part where Joyce blames Giles for Buffy's disappearance is interesting and very true to life where people blame others for their own actions trying to transfer the blame. Buffy of course comes through at the end freeing all the slaves in the Underworld. Some great little comedy moments with Xander and Cordelia again. A great ending with Buffy back home on the doorstep, where no words are needed just relief that she is back. I think we can see the fight sequences improve immensely in S3 onwards, you can now see the show has a much bigger budget with better cinematography and effects.

    Twenty-five years later and alarm bells continue to remain silent in Episode 1 when the middle-aged man tells the 16-year-old girl that she can NEVER tell anyone about what they do when they're alone.
    The show followed up on that quickly in Episode 3: For as long as she followed Giles' rules, Buffy could never have the open, honest relationship with her mother since she had to lie about what she was or wasn't doing for a lot of her time each day.
