- This video shows you How To Update A BMW Key With No Key Slot. This procedure will apply to any vehicle that does not have a key slot and has a key symbol on the side of the steering column. This procedure updates the key for service maintenance information, mileage, check control messages, and fault codes to be read out by a dealer or shop with key reader capabilities. This can help find specific service information bulletins relating to problems with the vehicle or if you are going to give your spare key to your servicing location the key will have the latest information from your vehicle.

Also the digital manual will come up as a suggestion for key malfunctioning which shows you how to position the key and when successful you put the vehicle in drive ready state

It writes the new info each time and updates while driving in some cases.

Hello Raspreet Gill, You can definately try but I am not sure with a display key. Was the display key retrofitted using an aftermarket programming. I am not overly familiar with adding a display key. Can you send me more info on what you had installed?
@@AskTheCarExperts hey thanks for the reply, I got the display key retrofitted from my official BMW service centre for my G20. The key only locks and unlocks the car. The display on it doesn’t show my car’s range, door status,etc. It’s just not syncing the car’s details. I tried your method in the video too but it didn’t work. The service centre seems to be clueless.

Can same process be done to add additional key after buying key from ebay?
Unfortunately no. This updates vehicle information. Ebay keys don't work with BMWs. I actually posed as a customer once with a key they bought. Worked through the lies from the company and the end result was to return the keys for a full refund. BMW keys are coded to the car to prevent theft. Only a dealer item Unfortunately.
My dealer replaced the idrive and now have no service history in vehicle status, using this method would it restore the service history onto the idrive
Hi Scott, This procedure updates the key by taking it from the vehicle. If the service history in the vehicle was lost it will not transfer correctly. The key unfortunately cannot send information back to the vehicle. It sounds like your vehicle lost service data during programming. It happens sometimes. But this information can be programmed back into the vehicle by the dealer using a test plan called CBS data correction and using a documented service history the service dates and mileage can be written back into the vehicle. Hey where did you buy the key from?
Bmw. Only in California can a company duplicate a key. All other key services that I have seen are a scam online. BMW protects from theft so a key must be ordered by the dealer and it comes married to the vehicle.
is this same for 2015 x5? I cant figure mine out for the life of me. Both my keys batteries died which I've replaced but i dont know how to reprogram it.
Hello Giano, After replacing the batteries the remote should work normally. What type of problem is happening?
@@AskTheCarExperts the remote still is not working and the car is not detecting the key unless I press up against the side of the steering wheel. The batteries were new, maybe I’ll try getting a new pack?
@@gianoisabella-valenzi6761 I had this happen to me when I used cheap batteries once. Make sure to use a good name brand battery. If they where working before then it should just be a battery issue.

Hello Daaka, This style key only uses the passive go system. No key slot in newer BMW's.
Diagnostics mode comes up in my 2021 3 series but when I put my new fob to that spot nothing happens

Hello, This is to update the key so a BMW dealer can read the key read information that is current. It will not program a key to work with a BMW that is not purchased from the dealer.

Did not work on my G01 BMW X3 2018
This is only to update key information for a BMW center to read out of the key. If the info does not transfer there may be a programming fix that helps with that.

Sorry to hear that. This procedure is so a dealer can read key info, not for updating a replacement key.
This procedure is NOT accurate therefore video should be removed since it doesn't help at all
From all the other comments this worked fine for them. Could be something wrong with your key or car.
