I agree with you, the a7 IV is my first interchangeable lens camera and all the tutorials I had seen, had me overwhelmed because I'm a beginner; all I've had before were point and shoot cameras, like my Sony RX100 M5, that I would only use in auto. Now that I've seen your video, I feel confident enough to get the camera out of the box, where it's been sitting since December 23rd, along with the 70-200 GM M2 lens, and finally switch from my RX100 to my new a7 IV. Thank you for this beginners tutorial 👍 You were right, beginners, sometimes actually do, start with advanced cameras like this one 👌
After dreaming of this camera for two full years, I finally ordered it yesterday, and I can't tell you HOW MUCH I love this guide. It's so clear, easy to understand, so positive and open-minded! Usually, these guides are full of technical jargon, go way too fast and make me feel really stupid. Yours is borderline therapeutic. :D So thank you so, so much for making this! I can't wait to get started with my dream camera.
Jason, How do you thank a person who shares so much knowledge with others for free? I think I can't enough. The real power of this platform is people like you. cheers.
Because of your ability to explain everything in such an easy way and to put it in context with examples, this was not just a Sony A7 IV beginners guide but also a photography beginners guide! :) Thank you for that. I'll be coming back to this video for sure.
@6:17 , you just saved me from a heart attack, took the camera just out of the box and heard the rattling noise😮😮, OMG, thank you for explaining all the simple things...❤
By far, the best video covering the features and functions of the A7IV. I’ve had the A7IV for over a year now and this video has enlightened me to so many features I was not aware of. Thank you for this extensive explanation.
Glad it was helpful Mark and thank you for the kind words :) I have several more videos on the A74 as well if you would like to check them out here: ruclips.net/p/PL3SqIRuKwn7_8Gz9Cn_nReK4xol7KLVm7
I don’t have a camera yet. Still watching it as a part of manifesting my long time wish to own a great camera. Loved the video. Saving it for my future use❤
You r the real MVP. I’m a seasoned photographer/videographer and just switched from Nikon to Sony. This Vid lister ally has given me everything I need to feel confident with the switch. I can hit the ground running! I’m not even finished watching yet…
I just got this camera. My business requires professional content, but all of that work has always been contracted out. We are working on bringing more content production in house, so I purchased this camera to get some hands on experience. Even though the work will be delegated, it is always good to understand how critical components of your business work first hand. This video has been eye opening into the possibilities and all the intricacies of both the shooting, and all the possibilities in how the camera works with other equipment. I wish I had learned about all this sooner. I don't think many career shooters understand all these features as well and I do after watching this video. There's a hand full of memories in which this information would have saved us a lot of time and improved the result of what we needed done. Thank you!
i read a whole 400 sheet book about this camera and watched a lot of videos. but in your video i found still some aha moments and not know tricks! just great!
Ive spent 2 weeks learning how to use this camera from other sources. Some were great! But this!!!! OMG...I wish this was the first video I found 2 weeks ago! Brilliant. Thanks so much Jason.
Very articulate, a treasure for beginners entering the beautiful field of photography. Thank you Mr.Hermann for your valuable guidance. All the way from India. 🇮🇳
Hi Jason. Just brought home my new a7 iv. For someone who has little to no idea of camera features, their functions and to navigate through them BUT is passionate abt photography and starting her journey into photography, it helps me alot to understandall these by your excellent guidance. Thank you so much 🙏🏽❤️🌟
I am now retired and thought I would take up birdwatching. I have had SLR cameras from Canon and Nikon before, but the programmable options from my Sony A7Riv I find REALLY INTIMIDATING! The plethora of programmable options isn't helped by the fact there isn't a manual with the camera that I can leaf through. I have looked at Amazon for Sony A7iv camera manuals, but the choice is very limited right now, July 2022. Additionally, the online tutorials for birdwatching settings are done mainly through the MENU, rather than through a mode specific dial. With my Nikon or Canon SLRs, I could easily set ISO, aperture, shutter speed. However, as I mentioned, with the Sony A7iv, I have to go into settings and or remember what I have done in the menu. I am now 76 and this camera is really making me feel my age!
Hi Jason, I bought the ZV-1 after watching your excellent beginners guide on it, I am now stepping up to the A7 iv. Once again you've produced a FANTASTIC beginner's guide video. The way you explain things for people like me who are in no way "professional" photographer's is absolutely brilliant. Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video, not just for experienced photographer's but for us beginner's as well. Wonderfully explained as always. Now subscribed !! Thanks again from London UK
hi im a camera noob i have been working with a canon 600d on full auto for 6 years now and i just think the quality doesnt always do justice to my creativity so i really look forward to buying this camera with the sigma 24-70 lenses and start a video journey also photographs and with this camera i will obviously learn how to operate iso aperture and all that, im gonna watch this video now, im still saving for it but im gonna get it! i fell in love with the fx3 but this also creates good image and its also more suitable for pictures thanks a lot!
Just bought this camera today and I am a total beginner to photography in general. Thank you for explaining each and every feature that's on this camera, it has seriously saved me so much time guessing what does what.
just upgraded from my a6000 to A7IV yesterday , totally overwelmed with the new functionalities and design, so very happy with this 'beginner guide' thanks!
Thank you so much for this beginner guide, now it's my third week of getting this camera, and I am still replaying your video again & again. It's SO USEFUL. I love how you construct your video into different parts, so that I can learn a bit and then practise in real life, and then go back to continue.
Thanks for your effort... this is very helpful. I am a photography mentor. This video had refreshed my understanding about Sony Camera settings and menus.
Thanks for the most complete guide to the a7IV menu system. I am an advanced Sony user (a7rIII, a6500, a7IV) and I still got a lot from your guide. I think this would also be an awesome tutorial for a newbie photographer because of all the exposure and focusing info. Great job! 2 thumbs up!
I'm not new to SLRs and DSLRs, but I was just gifted this camera by a family member who bought it with the intention of getting into photography and lost interest. Coming from an EOS, I was having some trouble just getting the camera set up, finding all the controls, and understanding the myriad of options and menu items. Extremely valuable video. Thank you for taking the time to go through everything.
Fanatic teaching, is the best by far actually I bought my a7 IV in May of this year, however,I had to send it back because it was not focusing.Thank you so much for your tutorial i really appreciate it.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Just got my A7iv yesterday, first new camera in about 10 years after using a Canon and a Sony Handycam. So even though I'm not a total newb to cameras, I'm a newb to this camera. I wish I'd watched it before doing anything because the charging port was not obvious. Going to watch every second, follow along, and probably watch again. Thank you!
As a beginner to photography who recently purchased this camera, I want to thank you! Your tutorial was exceptional, and I've gained a lot of knowledge from it!
This is exactly the kind of video I’ve been looking for. I have the RX100 VII but I do want to upgrade to one of these one day. You make it seem much more possible.
This camera is AMAZING, I'm loving it! I am typically an Auto Video shooter and looking to get more into all the features so I love hearing all the info!
THANK YOU . THANK YOU. THANK YOU! This was my first Sony Camera, I have own mostly all canons , from the enthusiast models then the 5d Md3 to the 1DX. This by far was the best video tutorial I have ever watched! I have almost always used the lazy setting to use most of my cameras. this video has inspired me to venture more into learning to use the manual setting! Excited to be on this journey as a new Sony user!
So good. Thanks for the quick, lengthy tutorial. Got a used camera and have never used a mirrorless camera so this was super helpful to bring me up to speed with a new system.
I have decades of experience in photography including pro grade cameras and I find it useful to review videos like this when getting a new camera to familiarize myself with it quicker. I sold my Nikon kit that included a couple D800E's and about $30K in glass a while back in anticipation of moving to Sony mirrorless and the A7 IV will be my first full frame mirrorless -- ordered a couple days ago and I should have it in a couple days. I generally do landscape with a bit of wildlife and architecture (abandoned buildings etc.) so the A7R V will likely be the second body when that stops.
Same. This is my first mirrorless camera as well and I’ve only used canon for photography and now moving to Sony so this was super helpful. I found myself reaching for buttons that were in a different place 😂😂😂
What an amazing video! I’m about to buy my first Sony camera and I’ve been watching this video for when the time comes and is so well explained that makes me feel confident to start the journey. Thank you
Hi there. Just switched into the Sony ecosystem after years of being a Canon guy. This video was invaluable. Thanks for the well-organized and presented information!
Thank you a lot sir, after filming and photographing with my iPhone I bought this as my first camera ever and its overwhelming and expensive so I wanna be cautious as possible and you helping me a lot as a noowbie
1:20:38 So if you are visually impaired you can go in here, and this is where you'd turn that option on, see that? Right here. Well that was unfortunate :) Great introductory material, thanks. Also the most innovative setting no one talks about is movie mode -> shooting mode -> exposure ctrl type -> flexible exposure mode. You can switch PASM on the go using custom keys and dials, no need to use the mode dial, very powerful. Hope it will trickle down to photo mode as well.
One step at a time! Trying to take it all in at once is way to much ... I recommend focusing in one mode at a time starting with full auto depending on your skill level. Then move up to P mode, then Av mode so you can control aperture and the camera will do the rest...
Thank you, really great video. I appreciate you treating it like a beginners guide because I bought this camera for business but learned what aperture was in this video lol
Many thanks from sweden! This is my first full frame hybrid camera, i was used to my older canon Dlsr so i hade lots of questions about the settings, now i can enjoy going out with my new camera! Thank you for making it easy to learn!
I scanned the QR code for the manual and at the same time searched for a beginner's guide here and basically have almost no need for a manual (for now). This video was absolutely phenomenal, covered so much in a solid amount of time, and I feel ~85% better equipped to start using this beast. I don't typically like a whole lot of videos on here, but this one is going down as a 'Love' (but I'm also liking it too). Thank you for this!
Jason, What a great guide for the A7iv. Just spend this afternoon working my way through every setting with your kind assistance. I really appreciated your pace, detailed explanations and approach. many thanks.
Thanks, Thanks and Thanks. Got the lens first Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G for A7 IV, still waiting for the camera. I will be watching your video multiple times and doing the same thing you have done. Lot to learn. No need to read the user manual. Thanks again.
Video was good he did help me a lot .I got a case cover for my camera n it was cover some thing I was in the wrong mode n did not know it until I watch this video so thank u still need a lot of help my first camera is overwhelmed but I’m go watch thus video over n over I just wish someone make videos n part not n one big video
What is the main difference in using the different dial modes in video, between Auto, P, A, S and M. Does everything stay auto in A except Aperture? What is P mode?
I tried to cover this as best I could in the video. The different camera modes provide you with a different tool set basically. P mode is a more advanced Auto Mode. Use that if you want to change some settings, but also want some auto help. A mode will allow you to manipulate the Aperture independently, S will let you manipulate Shutter speed Independently, M will allow you to control both Shutter and Aperture at the same time. ISO can also be changed in these modes, but often times Auto ISO is used... As far as everything being in Auto besides Aperture in A mode, yeah pretty much if you have ISO set to Auto.
thank you, thank you, thank you. I own the A7ii and A7riii and know how to do all of the settings. I rented an A7iv for the holidays. I've had it 24 hours now and could NOT figure out how to make it use the SD cards in both slots, like my A7riii. I had no problem setting up RAW on card 1, but I could not get the slot 2 card to show up in this 'new' menu. With my personal cameras it was easy to do with the 'old' menu system. I was so frustrated. Simply in just doing a simple google search, instead of specifically going to you tube, your video showed up. With camera in hand, I followed your video and you did exactly what I wanted. So now I have slot one for RAW and Slot 2 for jpeg, which is how I have my A7riii. I've played with the camera today and the tracking is so much better (I like to photo commercial jets taking off and landing at the local airports), than my A7riii and totally superior to the A7ii. The other you tube videos I saw, did not go into any detail when it came to programming both slots, in sequence. Thank you, again. I know it is a new menu system, but it seems more complicated than the old one to me. On the Christmas holidays, my camera rental store, Aperturent, let's you rent for 3 days and keep the equipment for about 10 days, until they return to their office in January. WOW! I may actually treat myself and trade in both of the cameras for this A7iv. I just subscribed to your channel as a thank you. Have a good day.
I got a lot out of this video, having just bought an A7iv. Thanks a lot for the clear explanation and for breaking things down. I've changed a lot of the settings based on your recommendations 😊
I'm not new to photography, but I am new to FF cameras. Fantastic review, you put a lot of effort into it and it shows, straight to the point, concise. Thank you so much. Subscribed.
Great guide! Jumping up from Sony a6100 to A7 IV, getting all these new features is crazy. The guide gave me excellent overview of the functions and being already familiar with sony, I got my camera pretty much setup watching the guide.
This is a great video, I just got the new A7RV, and after looking for YT videos on how to program, I found your video to be the best, since the A74's menu and functions are almost identical. I was able to navigate through most everything by watching your video. I have one question, do you know how to turn off the beeping sound of the timer when using it in bracketing exposure function? Thanks again for doing this video, I found it EXTREMELY helpful!
You're very welcome and for the beeping sounds see here: MENU → (Setup) → [Sound Option] → [Audio signals] → Off I also have many more A7IV videos which will help you get going with A7RV here: ruclips.net/p/PL3SqIRuKwn7_8Gz9Cn_nReK4xol7KLVm7
@@Jason_Hermann Thank you so much Jason. I didn't mention in my earlier note, but I am a subscriber and have watched your videos, love the testing station you set up and use to test cameras and lenses. I turned off the audio signal and works good, it turns off all of the audio though (which isn't a problem), recall though with my A7R4, I was able to turn off the audio specifically in the bracketing exposure function, and still have audio signals for other functions. I'll check out other videos on the A74, your step by step videos were extremely helpful and actually serves people much better than most of the other user reviews, if no one can figure out how to get through the menus, user reviews at the macro level often isn't very helpful!
I am not aware of an audio off setting for just for bracketing Steve... It's possible I missed it, but I just checked the manual again it only has the one audio signal off option I can see. "Set [Audio signals] to [Off] to turn off the beeping sound during the self-timer countdown."
@@Jason_Hermann Thank you Jason. I think you are right, I can't recall whether the audio shutoff for my R4 shut everything off. I just rewatched your video and picked up a lot more golden nuggets...your video and efforts are really appreciated, I learn something everything I watch this video.
Yea. Just got my A7RV as my first Sony camera. This video guide is super easy to understand. Skimmed through the entire manual day 1 but didn't learn much. It is more of a reference to lookup stuff after familiarizing with the camera than a starter guide.
Outstanding report. You have a wonderful knack for making the difficult manageable. I applaud you for that. Thank you for the tutorial on this amazing camera.
Huge work! Thank you! I use this Sony and Tamron 28-75 g2, my photos not really sharp. Maybe I do shots without flash or without much lights. But auto focus is really missed a lot. Or all problems in lenses.. I buy it in Feb 3. 2024
Really hard to say Anton. With a full frame ultra high resolution camera you do have to be more careful when taking photos to insure maximum sharpness, meaning a slightly higher shutter speed, or using a tripod if the shutter is a bit slower for example. It's the same as most cameras, but a bit more sensitive. If you are missing focus and shutter speed is not your issue, then you can try using a different focus area and practice on a static subject a few times to make sure it's not eh camera or lens.
Thank you for this video, thinking of getting this camera and felt a little intimidated on all its features. You explained it all so well and at a great pace, thought an hour long video was going to be lots of info to process but you made it really easy to understand and grasp.
BIG THANKS for this tutorial, I just got today the a7iv and I am an absolute beginner so this was SO helpful! I am not even half done with the tutorial and just wanted to pause it for a second and leave a comment about how happy and how much valuable info you provided with this video! big fan of your channel already
Hello Jason, I'm super grateful for people like you on RUclips. I especially want to throw a mighty big thanks out to you for answering specific questions and that have helped with me setting up my camera though I am a beginner.
Whew!! Although I have been a Canon (EOS 7D) user for many years and never experienced so many settings (options) this is a bit overwhelming! Appreciate your very thorough and comprehensive tutorial. Actually for the type of subjects I normally shoot (mostly classic cars and antique houses), I probably wouldn't be using all these "bouncing" flexible shot focus and metering.............but nice to know about all the features and settings.

Same bro..
this begginer tutorial very helpful to me.
Just picked one up myself!!!
Couldn't agree with you more!

Amazing! The a7IV is my first camera and you helped me go from feeling powerless and nervous to powerful and calm. Thank you Jay!
You're very welcome and I am very happy to hear that :) Thank you as well ;)
Not a beginner to photo/ film, but my first time owning a Sony from a Canon user for many years. So thank you!
Because of your ability to explain everything in such an easy way and to put it in context with examples, this was not just a Sony A7 IV beginners guide but also a photography beginners guide! :) Thank you for that. I'll be coming back to this video for sure.
Thank you :)

It's just a bigger version of what you already have, plus you can change lenses... That is how I would look at it ;)
Just got the camera a couple days ago and this video has been so helpful! Thank you so much for your insight!!
My Master Teacher, thanks so much for this guide. I just bought A7 iv and I'm also novice in photography. This will help me so much.
Just bought my a7iv and i just love how much I've learn about this particular camera and general photography works. Thank you so much.

Great. Sony should have a reference to this in the box with the camera.
This video made the initial experience with my A7 IV that much better. Many thanks from an inexperienced photographer.
Glad it helped!
Great tutorial! Just recently picked up the A7IV after coming from Canon. Thoroughly and clearly explained.
Thank you for the video! Just got this monster camera and I’m so excited to learn how to use it properly.
Have fun!
My goodness, my brain is full. Awesome video, thank you for being detailed and descriptive. I will watch again. Thank you.
I'm glad you found it helpful!
Very helpful. Thank you. I just got my Sony A7IV, and this tutorial has been extremely valuable so far.
You're very welcome!
1:20:38 So if you are visually impaired you can go in here, and this is where you'd turn that option on, see that? Right here.
Well that was unfortunate :)
Great introductory material, thanks. Also the most innovative setting no one talks about is movie mode -> shooting mode -> exposure ctrl type -> flexible exposure mode. You can switch PASM on the go using custom keys and dials, no need to use the mode dial, very powerful. Hope it will trickle down to photo mode as well.
This is such a good lesson for sbdy like me. I hope that u would make another lesson for Nikon ZFC like this. Thx.
Thank you for this video! I’m a total beginner and have no idea how to use a camera. So this video will be very helpful to me.
You're very welcome and thank you for sharing you kind words :) All the best, Jay
Thank you very much and I have owned this camera a year and STILL found this video BEYOND useful. Many, many thanks!
You're very welcome! :)
Wow, remembering all these functions and how to change them when needed requires a brilliant brain which I don’t have. Thank you so much any way.
Glad it was helpful to yu and thanks for the kind words :)
@@Jason_Hermann 😊
I’m a beginner . First camera ever so I do appreciate this video 😃
Thanks a lot for the tutorial. I am buying Sony A7 IV and it is my first camera.
Have fun!
90 minute video and no related food videos or photos.
Thanks for your content.
R U disappointed? I don't usually include to many photos with the beginners guides ...
@@Jason_Hermann thank you so much! I think I get it haha just trying to make sure I understood it correctly :)
im a beginner and that's the first camera I decided to buy.. I always want the best !
Thank you very much Jason, your calm voice and so pedagogic approach are a pleasure to learn!!
appreciate the video, have never had a nice camera, just picked this one up today. have no idea how to use it
Great turorial, I switched from Canon to Sony and therefore it was really helpful to have such tutorial. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
thank you, thank you, thank you.
I bought the Sony A7R5 and I appreciate this video. I'm new to digital cameras.
Thanks for a great video. I've had this great camera for a year now and learned many new things from this video. I appreciate your work!
30 minutes in and I feel so enlightened :) Thank you so much for this thorough and well-thought guide!
Subscribed.
Thank you :)
Finally found the best explanation video for beginners. Thank you.
You're very welcome :)
Great guide! Jumping up from Sony a6100 to A7 IV, getting all these new features is crazy. The guide gave me excellent overview of the functions and being already familiar with sony, I got my camera pretty much setup watching the guide.
Thanks!
Thank you Geoff and your very welcome!
You're very welcome and for the beeping sounds see here: MENU → (Setup) → [Sound Option] → [Audio signals] → Off
I also have many more A7IV videos which will help you get going with A7RV here: ruclips.net/p/PL3SqIRuKwn7_8Gz9Cn_nReK4xol7KLVm7
If you are missing focus and shutter speed is not your issue, then you can try using a different focus area and practice on a static subject a few times to make sure it's not eh camera or lens.
i tried to shoot in "real life" and with errors and attempts try to feel good condition with shutter iso and f and AF) all fine)@@Jason_Hermann
Definitely a beginner & I bought this with a sigma lens. Hoping to grow into it
Thank you for this video, thinking of getting this camera and felt a little intimidated on all its features. You explained it all so well and at a great pace, thought an hour long video was going to be lots of info to process but you made it really easy to understand and grasp.
Glad it was helpful and thanks for the kind words Gabriela :)
First cam ever, this tutorial was sooooo needed. Thanks!
Thanks Jason, this has been really useful. I got my A7 IV last week.
Such an awesome, clear and helpful video - thank you!
You're very welcome :)
Best introduction to the camera on the Internet.. thank you
Thank you very much Greg :)
Honestly, this is the best video Ive seen on the A7iv. And ive watched tons this week, just got the camera 📸
Awesome camera and great to here Nazfunk! Thanks :)
im a begginer and I needed a beginner oriented video on this camera. thank you so much
You're very welcome Georgia!
BIG THANKS for this tutorial, I just got today the a7iv and I am an absolute beginner so this was SO helpful! I am not even half done with the tutorial and just wanted to pause it for a second and leave a comment about how happy and how much valuable info you provided with this video! big fan of your channel already
You're very welcome Carlos and thank you for the kind words :)
Hello Jason,
I'm super grateful for people like you on RUclips. I especially want to throw a mighty big thanks out to you for answering specific questions and that have helped with me setting up my camera though I am a beginner.
I appreciate that!
Thank you for this useful video . It’s another world for me after years of being a cannon user .
