  • Video showing on my 2017 Can Am Outlander Maxx XT 570, the Warn Winch that comes with the unit would go out but not in.
Most all of the videos and posts I could find lead to a bad Winch Solenoid. Not sure that was the case after removing and checking things out.
The Solenoid base plate seems to be painted cast metal. The mounting bracket that solenoid mounts to is painted. The is a ground wire that mounts to a mounting hole also.
Removed the paint on the upper mount tab, front and back sides, then removed the paint from the mounting bracket. Brushed on clear dielectric grease and reinstalled the new Winch Solenoid.
Now the winch works perfect with out any problems.
Before replacing you solenoid, check to make sure that the ground wires are getting a good ground.. If not, remove the paint and start from there.
    Hope this helps!!

Thank you for this video. My Warn winch on my Can Am 850xt was not coiling up. Popped off the panel to find all the nuts on the silenoid where not tight. Gave them all a good tightening and fixed the problem. Would of never check this without your video. Cheers.

Thanks much for the video! Was on a wild goose chase trying to find a new contractor (snow coming in tonight) and nobody within 150 miles had one in stock. Watched your video and got the metal to metal contact you suggested. Works perfectly (like a winch that has been used less than 5 times should)! Saved me bucks!! Thanks again!

Came here to see where the damn thing is located as I am installing a wireless remote from Warn but it’s good to know about this possible issue.

Ugh! I have a 2018 North Edition 650 can-am. We were told the selenoid was under the seat. we found it and took it out with a lot of work. After watching your video it looks like we may have taken the wrong thing out. I didn't realize there is a solenoid for the winch itself as well. I am having the same problems it has been going down but not up then suddenly it did the opposite it went up but now won't go down. I will have to see if I too have the selenoid behind my fender and check the connections before I purchase anything else. Thank you for your video. I wish I had watched it before I took out the selenoid under the battery tray.

How did that work out for you? I’ve got a warm winch making that clicking sound as well.

Outlander 570 '16 , plow was going down but not up . Dealer told me to change solenoid , they often burn they said . Took the solenoid out , tore it to pieces and found severe damage to pieces that click together . Took sandpaper and cleaned everything up , sanded the 3 bracket holes and the 3 holes on the solenoid and everythings ok for now . The inside pieces are cheap metal , it will stop working someday cause of that . Saved 100$ today , may want to find spare winch kit for next time

Nice video, but was the second (new) solenoid also displaying the same problem? If not, then it could be the new solenoid fixed it? Cheers

I have a '22 outlander, my winch is the opposite will go in with the button but when I hit the out button it does nothing. I used the winch one time and couldn't even get it to free spool. I finally got it to free spool, looked inside and it's all rusty and sounds like the bearings are bad. I've only had the machine for about a month.

My 2010 Outlander max 800 only does this after using it alot plowing snow.
Let it sit 10 min, then it starts working again.

I found the problem on mine. I took apart the solenoid (top half) and found that the points between the positive and post going to the winch were melted from arcing. Turns out cheap or crap metal for the amps used by the winch using a plow. I sanded the worn face down and started working again...at least until the face melts again. Job is real easy to do. Theres a cover for the top half, 2 screws, rubber O rings holding the posts in place just dont lose those when you pull the posts out. The point plate that moves and and down, twist sideways to pull apart and put back in. Look at the face of the plate that makes contact with the posts and sand the worn parts.

Mounting bolts caused the issue ?

Richard Green, I called my dealer and he replaced the part under a warranty. I put it in, that’s when I found out that the paint was never removed behind the relay switch. Before I installed the new switch I sanded off the pains all around then applied electric grease on the bare metal for contact and the new one works great both ways. If you’re having this issue I’d remove the relay and clean off the paint Jeffrey you do anything else. Hope this helps

For anyone that has and fixed this ground problem did it happen sporadically? Mine does it on and off and drives me nuts. Seems to happen more when the machine gets wet after plowing for awhile.
And could a solenoid fail sporadically or is it usually an all or nothing kind of deal?

I have a 2018 570 x3 and winch goes out, but not in. I did the “remove the paint on front and back of solenoid and on the bracket as well”, as you explained here, but it still doesn’t reel in. I did not replace the solenoid though. It still just clicks each time I push the “in” button. If I hear that click each time I hit the button, does that mean the solenoid is good?

Hey Xodarap1 2p... As long as you cleaned of the paint real well.. on both the frame of the bike & the solenoid it should work. If it doesn't I think that the solenoid is out. Just like on my son's Ford Expedition. The starter solenoid went out... but still clicks. If you cleaned up the paint, then mounted it tight again, but the solenoid just clicks.. i think you need a new solenoid.. sorry buddy.. :(

hawkskyflier that’s ok. I have one on order already, it will be here on Monday. I just didn’t know if the solenoid could still be bad if it clicked. I really didn’t want to be back to the dealer for a new winch motor. Thanks so much for your video and for the reply! 👍
