- In this video you will learn how to do a valve adjustment on a Can-Am outlander. This procedure is the same for all V twin motors, including the 500, 570, 800, and 1000. It will also show you how to find top dead center the easy way.
Never too late for a good informative DIY video, concise and no music, great video.
3yrs later and still a great diy vid. Thanks man
That was a very large help. It was very thorough and to the point. I am usually working on single cylinder motors, so this was reassuring for the situation.
Awesome video. I have a 2022 defender with the twin 1000cc engine. Just replaced the starter due to cranking slow when hot. Read a couple posts of people saying the valves needed adjusting causing the engine to have excessive heat. This is the exact video I needed. Thank you!
Great video, thanks Corey. I've got a Can-Am Defender HD9 which has basically the same Rotax V-Twin, 973cc. I plan on using this video when my value adjustment schedule comes up. I really appreciate you taking the time to make this.
Thank you so much Corey! Sounded a lot harder…glad I watched the video.
TDC is also indicated on the flywheel. I you remove the single 8mm bolt on the camshaft sensor (black cylinder with wire coming out- top right of cover) and remove the sensor, you can look into the hole and see a 1/1 or 2/2. 1/1 being TDC for front cylinder 1, 2/2 being TDC for cylinder 2. Subsequently, the scores on the cam gear will be parallel with the head per respective cylinder.
Saves me 500 bucks..
Thank you very much. Now I know what to do :) Greetings from Poland.
thanks for the video. i have a outlander 570 and i hear a taping from the back cylinder get a little quieter after about 20sec of running guess from the oil. but can still hear the tapping not as bad. front sound normal. glad it not a knock. i did value adjustments on cars never
a atv. your video shows that it dont look all that bad. planning on giving it a shot. good timing on video release.
Thinking outside the box good luck!
Man this is so goood made it ! Helped a lot.
The best thing to do after initially setting them with the "middle" measurement is to take the feeler gauge at the upper limit of recommended valve clearance and if it fits, you know it's too loose.
ex. Exhaust .11-.19mm so the next feeler is .203 I think and that SHOULDN'T fit.
On contrary, the .102mm should fit with ease.
Good stuff Dude!
Thanks ur good help
Nicely done, thanks for sharing.

Great video, thank you very much.
Quick question I’m sure the ticking that seems to be so common on these Can-Am. That’s what you hear when you first started up. It takes real soft and then once you put it down in gear, it generally stops or once the machine warms up a little bit??
Thank you
Are you doing this with the motor cold or hot?
ordering a feeler gauge set now
Great video bud, but I was always told even from my dealership that the valves had to be adjusted when the motor was warm?
Have you noticed the valves being too tight often? I would think everything would loosen the more the motor is used. Great video and instructions. Thanks. Do you have any experience with the fuel line clamps? Are they reusable and do they take special tools to tighten them?
Speaking for my 2007 Outlander 650, the fuel lines clamps are reusable as long as you don't break them like I have done. No special tools needed for mine, they just clips. I replaced the one that I broke with a ziptie, it works perfectly!
great video
I have a single cylinder and adjusted the valves to spec. I still have a tick. I’ve heard mention of a tick being normal in the rotax. Opinion? Have ever had issues with rockers making noise?
I got a 2019 can am defender hd8 I replace the piston and rings and new valves and got good compression now and I got the timing set right I hope compared to what you showed in this video the springs was lose enough to set tdc I get a lot of air coming out the intake side and it try’s to start but the spark don’t get the the plugs I got a new coil pack I got new wires and plugs I need some help please
Very very helpful
Great video. Thank you very much. Did you hear that pinging noise around the 50 hour mark when they recommend you do some maintenance or is this something that needs to be addressed throughout the life of the outtie?
Does this work for 650 outlander ? and if so if the exhaust is at top dead center do I leave it and do the intake at the same position?
does anyone know how to rest the dash after a oil change?
What clearens do i need on my outlander 650 2015
Good video thanks.
What are the requirements for adjusting the valves, hot or cold engine, it matters big time!
Thanks.
Do You set them on a hot engine or cold. Very important?
Regarding the tick marks on the chain sprocket: on cylinder 2, the rear one, the one you are showing in this video;: Are the marks that need to be parallel to the cylinder head should be positioned below center of the sprocket or above the center of the sprocket?
On cylinder 1, front one, they are below the center of the sprocket next to the edge of the cylinder head. Where they should be on cylinder 2? Thanks.
If you set TDC for cylinder 2 by using the flywheel marks, then you should be confirmed that TDC for cylinder 2 shows the ticks on the bottom of the gear and parallel with the head
i'm from brazil we have a can am 570 here it doesn't burn the rear piston what can it be give me a tip i'm almost crazy here..
How many miles do you have in order to adjust the valves? Thanks
I’m confused the adjustments you mentioned are not the same as the adjustments the manual you uploaded are saying
is it the same gap for the 1000r engine?
Check you’re operators manual!
It’s this setting the timing and not adjusting the valves?
Setting the timing would require removal of the cam gear. He's just adjusting valve gaps
thought you were added a link for the repair Manuel.

When you tighten down the lock nut does the bolt turn and throw out your adjustment
Yes you have to hold the adjustment screw with a flat head and just give the lock nut a good snug
Does a guy need to drain the oil before removing the cap to rotate the motor?
No need to drop the oil for this.
Upload the service manual please
dealer quoted me $400 to do this..
