Shame on the companies charging ppl $700 to fix these issues. Nice work man. Thanks for the pro tip!
Exactly that's what I was thinking. You're welcome man! Thanks
Really? It takes hours to recover data properly. Depending on the amount of data retrieved depends usually on the price. The $700 price is usually after the fact recovery. The initial fee usually should be $150 just to see if data is recoverable. If it is, then a quote is give for the amount per gig. Usually $1-$5 per gig depending on the level of recovery required. If it's just straight software driven retrieval, $1/gig. If drive manipulation required; part replacement or full platter/chop removal from host to sacrificial drive it drives the cost up.
Don't hate the price tag. Likely your full bill would be $700 if not more depending on data retrieved. The drive might be $100, but your data is priceless if it's sensitive or required for business.
To follow up, something like this could be done by a local shop with someone that has decent soldering skills. $150 and usually you're back in business with your drive put back together. If you don't care for the enclosure, then the price gets cheaper, like Jeremy said, remove the drive and plug it into a $7 adapter and you're good to go.
So glad I found this video. Thanks for saving me from the humiliation of having to tell my client their shoot was a total waste of time!
You're welcome Dominic!
thank you so much for posting this. It was such a relief and feeling of success when the drive appeared again on the desktop and all my data was accessible again. The part was easy to get from Amazon. All set, all best to you sir.
Desperately needed to recover film for a project from a dead LaCie rugged drive, you saved my grade! Thanks for this video, subbing!

thanks so much for a great video, simple but really effective. I made a slight modification which was to get a 2nd Lacie drive and basically canabilise it for parts so that my 'old' drive (full of stuff) functions and looks like a new one - as it now has an undamaged USB interface
Thank you. just tried this and it worked! very informative video.

Thanks for this vid, idk if I should be happy or not that this seems like a common issue with lacie drives. this is the last time i use a lacie drive, that's for sure.

Thanks Nil! Glad I could help you out! Haha not sure about your Toshiba my friend. Enjoy your week!
Hey Allan! Congratulations for this video 🙌🏽 I hope that this work for me as well. In the min 1.57 you were saying about the problems your were having. What were those problems? My issue is that the speed of transferring data is so slow 🥺🥺 between my LaCie and my Mac
Hey Jorge,
The biggest issue was the fact that my drive would not mount to my laptop. Before this was permanent it used to randomly unmount without apparent cause. But the reason why it wasn't staying mounted was because the soldering was coming apart. I'm sorry man I haven't experienced the slow speeds but who knows that's maybe because the part is coming lose on ur drive as well because in assuming you tried a faster cable. Talk soon later
God BLESS you for this!! It worked perfectly. Thank you
Awesome, I'm so glad it helped out!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Awesome video.. A bit intimidated, since my tech experience is zero. One question though.. I have an old Lacie rugged USB 3.0 500GB external hard drive with the firewire 800 pin on the side. Would you know if the process you just showed on the video works with this Lacie version? Hope you can help. Thanks!
Amazing thank you

Thank you sooooooooooooooooooo muchhh bro, Saved me hundreds of $$$$s.
You're Welcome! Glad I could help!
Excellent video. Question: My drive (identical to yours) was working today, and I put all of our family vacation photos onto it plus some other creative (PSD) files. Now, hours later, the drive I've been using for weeks is not recognized by my laptop. I can hear it buzzing when I plug it in, so it is getting power... is your fix in this video recommended for this scenario? I've tried different cords and four different ports.... not seen by my laptop. Argh! Help :) Thanks!
Thank you! Just rescued 2.5 TB of footage!!!
You're very welcome John
A gift to the world
Happy to help Destiny!
thank you!!
You're welcome Jorge
Thank you.
You're welcome John
I purchased two LaCie 5TB Rugged HDDs less than a year ago. Both drives have experienced issues with the USB-C port coming loose, leading to incorrect ejection and a risk of data loss. It's worth noting that I have only used these HDDs within the confines of my lounge despite their "Rugged" designation. In my opinion, the USB-C port design of the LaCie Rugged series is poor, and I cannot recommend these drives. I'm returning the HDDs to LaCie and will require my money back rather than replacements. Informative upload. Voted & Sub'd.
amazing!
Awesome glad you enjoyed the content!
i've used this trick once or twice, put the hard drive in a plastic bag and put it in a refrigerator for an hour or so to go cold, it can help close up the soldered points. when you try firing it back up again, get all your data off before it heats up again too much. hope this helps.
could you just use a sata cable directly to the motherboard, with suitable power cable from the psu (same as all sata hard drives)?
Thanks so much for your video. I have a question and I hope you can help. We obtained the Sabrent 2.5" SATA Hard Drive / SSD to USB 3.0 adapter cord and connected it to La Cie then plugged it into our Mac. The blue light is on La Cie and we can hear its motor running. We can see it in Utilities but we are unable to locate it in Finder. Any suggestions how we can see and click onto the external drive in order to gain access to our files? Thanks so much.
Hey Everyone, I hope that this helped you guys. Please, let me know if you found this information useful! I have a link to the SATA to USB Adapter linked in the description. :-)
Didnt help me.. but glad it seems to help others. My Lacie hard drive started beeping at me and my macbook wouldnt recognize the hard drive anymore. I bought the stupid thing only 3 months ago... lots of footage and edits on there that might be lost. I tried this and it didnt work sadly. I plugged the SATA adapter in, and connected to my laptop (held my breath) and it just started beeping again. nothing changed.
Sorry the vid didn't get you the help you needed Andrew. Definitely try giving lacie a call and walk them through your issue. Perhaps they may have a solution 🤔
Yo what's good Allan? We went to AU together I just crashed my hard drive crazy I stumbled upon your page. Appreciate the advice bro hope you're doing well my man 💪🏾💪🏾
Hey Tony, wondering which class were we together🤔? Pleasure to hear from you!🙌🏾 and you're welcome bro
@@IndieFilmArmy we weren't in classes I was a freshman when you were a senior year. I think we met through like a Sig Ep event. I was in OASN with Jeff haha
@@antmen20 Ahh gotcha!! OASN takin me back to Jeff's OASN days haha!
Do you know where to order a replacement part? I was able to backup my drive, but Id like to order a new part so I can reassemble the drive and continue using as I was before
jesus this saved my life thank you
You're welcome!
blesssss ya!
Thank you! Thought my data was gone! If I want to continue using it, how can I encase the hard drive to keep it safe??
Great video man!!!! Thank you for posting >;-)
Do you have a solution for the 5 TB that doesn’t have the screws.
Hey man, When I plug my drive in connected with the SATA to USB connection it says my computer the disk you attached was not readable by the computer. Any suggestions? Its recognizing the drive is plugged in now but it does not recognize the disk. Could it be the specific SATA adaptor?
I had this same problem! Wondering if there's a solution to this...
Once I removed the external cage, my hard drive didn’t just slight right out of the inner casing like yours, it seems secure in there via the port. Do I have to pry out the port or am I missing something? 3:20
Mine is loose too. Second one I’ve had!!
is lacie rugged 4tb size is 2.5 inch ??
Very informative video! My LaCie 4T drive just starting making a beeping sound after taking a minor fall. Do you know if this method might work for me? My USB-C port was not affected at all by the fall. The cable has also been tested on another fully functional LaCie drive, and it is fully operational and in perfect working order. My drive just doesn’t even show up on my desktop screen anymore. Please help
I would send it in. I have a 4tb, and I tried this method because my USB-C port was loose like in the video,, but apparently upon using the adapter and plugging back into my computer I received a prompt saying the disk was unreadable. Later found out this is due to a software on the drive to prevent people from installing them into computers.
hm i have a quick question! Did this hard drive make weird noises when connected? (beforehand) I don't think my drive has problem with loose connect (as you mention on the video)
Nah you went crazy 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼
I cannot access my photos, however it still lights up when I plug it in? Does that mean the adapter is the problem still? Or would it not be lighting up at all?
Awesome! Do you know what sort of adaptor I would need for a LaCie Rugged Raid 4TB (2 x 2TB) with thunderbolt & USB 3.0 interfaces?
Hello Amirah, the only way to see is to take it apart and look inside unfortunately. Because i don't have that model. It may have the same SATA as they are very common but I'm not sure gotta crack it open to find out🤓
So the warranty won't work after this step? How would I get the adapter back on if the drive still works to use again? - take it own to a repair shop?
Hi! I find this video very interesting but I still do not know if it's worth risking voiding the warranty. I purchased my 4tb Lacie Rugged USB-C drive about a month ago. Yesterday it started making weird clicking noises and was unmounted from my macbook. Do you think that maybe my drive has the same issue as yours? The thing is, I do not want to go ahead and try to the same thing you did in the video only to find out that the actual software is damaged and I just voided the warranty in vain. How did you find out what the problem was before unscrewing the lid of your drive? Was your drive also making clicking noises or anything similar?
I forgot to mention, but my drive has never been damaged in any way. It's pretty much brand new
I was so excited when I saw this video - I bought all the pieces but when I plugged the disk in I received a pop up saying "The disk you attached was not readable by this computer." Does anyone know how I can fix this if I need to change something in settings? I will be forever grateful!
thank you - a DJ
You're welcome 😊
I have a LaCie hard drive that will not show up on my mac. I have tried to use Disc Utility to mount it but the option to mount does not show up. If I get the SATA adapter will I be able to access my files and move them to a new drive? I need to get some important footage for a project off of it :(
Did you try this? Mine also is doing the same so I was going to try this.
Hey Allan. I have a beeping sound with my LaCie drive and id doesn't show up in Finder. I found this video and will try to fix it the same way. What kind of screwdriver is this?
Did you do it?
Great video. Have you ever experience you lacie rugged ssd THB disconnecting itself everytime ? I plug it, I see the icon for two seconds then it disappear. I still got the warrantly but maybe I'm going to try what you have done here cause I really don't want to loose my data
