Repair & recover data from a failed LaCie Big Disk Extreme external drive. If your power supply fails then you may hear the drives trying to spin up but failing over and over again. You can either replace the power supply or power the drives by using your desktop computer. If the firewire board breaks then your drives may not power up at all, and the green power supply light will flash. In this case, you can open up your LaCie and swap the drives into another LaCie enclosure. Finally, the HDDs can fail. Unfortunately, if this is the case, you will need to send your drives to specialists to see if they can rescue your data.

First of all, thanks for your suggestions, they helped me in some way to solve my troubles with this unit.
In case you may have your power supply flashing, I would suggest to check inside hard disk PCB if the schottky diode P6KE13A after the power connector is shorted. This diode has the only purpose to protect the circuit from flyback voltages or spike transients coming from the power supply; when it’s gone you may have a short circuit from +12v pin to ground causing the led blinking on PSA due to internal protection. Simply cut a leg of the diode and boom, unit’s working again. I hope this can be useful if you could encounter this annoying situation, it worked for me! I’m grateful to Jimi Hendrix that has been prayed to help and give me inspiration from over yonder🙏🏿 PS. Don’t forget to replace that diode or better change this unit for another after backing up your precious data, ‘cause it’s not so robust as it may seems..

Hey, thanks for this video! Quick question, how do you specifically power it up with another computer?

Thanks for the video! Basically wanted to confirm there were SATA drives inside. My 2011 iMac finally died and switching over to a new M1 mac mini which has no FW ports and my big disk has no USB ports. So yeah, gonna have to dissect a perfectly good working big disk drive to save the data.

Dr Jake - do you have a working case for a Lacie D2 1TB ethernet big disk? I have one where the logic board has gone and I need a new box to try putting the drives in. I put them in different non-ethernet big disk and the drives spin up but the unit is not recognised by my Mac over USB even after trying various mounting tools. SO I think I need the exact same container and to access over ethernet as originally. It' hard to fine one even on eBay so I am looking to borrow or buy. I am in Oxfordshire UK. It's the 1TB unit with two 512GB drives in an annoying RAID 0 configuration that my vague recollection was in Linux format.

I bought an external drive 2tb. I got a shortcut in my C drive that loads files in
my external drives. It takes 10 seconds before it will load it. Also time to time
very often, my external drive files takes 10 seconds to open. My pc can play recent
games max settings mostly. my external drive is my passport wd, which I know it's a
    good one too.
Also my external drive is 3.0 blue one. The line is very short. I've read the crazy
    long ones get slowed down.

Thank you for your video. Currently my Lacie Ethernet Bigdisk V2 does not work anymore. The blue light is blinking rapidly when I turn the power on. I measured the voltage of the (12V, 4A) power supply, I measured 12 Volt.. does that mean my power supply is working properly? I'm not sure but I cannot measure the power it's able to deliver. It should be 12*4=48 Watt but how can I measure that? Anyway, do you consider it likely my power supply is dead despite the 12 Volt being measured?

Where can I get a 2TB Big Disk encloure? Mine won't power up, so I think my power supply is toast.

All nice, the power solution works, I was able to spin up the drives with an external power cable BUT: the controller does not get any power that way and thus neither USB nor Ethernet will work. So, not really a solution.

These LaCie drives/power supplies are junk. Had this problem multiple times with multiple drives and their customer service was terrible. Never buying LaCie again.
