WPL Portal Axles Review and Update

Hi guys,
I upgraded my trusty WPL crawler with some portal axles. You might want/need to add two 12x8x3.5mm bearings but other than that they aren't bad. Run them in to smoothen out the gears a bit and life is good.

Do you drive to wrench or do you wrench to drive?

For the portals , I knew i was going to open mine so so I took the time to flip the side the input shaft comes in on . no need to reverse the motor wire as it cancels out reverse rotation of portal gears.
Also I too replaced the oily grease with green marine water proof grease 5 bucks for 85g tube (Motomaster stuff) .
I also lightly grased the protal gears . They looked like self lubricating sinterd metal , but i dont trust it as mine were bone dry . tiny dab of green greas and way better.
I did not greas anyting that woudl be exposed to dirt n dust .
Then to break them in i drove each axel with my cordless drill in 2nd drive gear hard for 10 min. then in short bursts in both direction at various speeds .
now they are so smooth , the only resistance I have is the drivshave U joints might be too steep on one of my trucks . I have 3 ( c24-1 ) and 2 of them are lifted and portaled.
way too much fun . Maybe i should get CV to replace the U joint axels.

What always disappoints me on these wpls is the huge play in the bearing seats and the shafts in the bearings themselves. So you are not able to set the mesh correctly. It always wobbles around. Sorry about my bad english 😁

Yeah, they definitely aren't perfect but the metal axles that come with the KM version kits are pretty good. The cheapos in the review are a not bad as long as you expect to have to do some DIY to get them working (obviously that's kind of sad but I always say these kits are great for people who like farting around with the car as much or more than driving it)
