Here's my REVIEW and TEST of these PORTAL AXLES for WPL trucks from RBRC.
They have some GREAT FEATURES, but there are some BIG PROBLEMS with them, which I show you how to fix. I then fit them to a C14 and put them through their paces on my crawler course!

hi, thanks for the video,I have these axles on MN99s, when riding straight I have no problem, but big problems when steering - left or right - BIG vibrations in the portal boxes and jerky move of the front wheels :( dont know what is wrong, its frustrating :( I checked the bearings and pins, everything seems to be ok. do you have the idea what is wrong? thank you very much.
Hi Tomas. I have found the same. At full-lock the cv joints start to bind. You can't solve it, but if you adjust your steering dual rates on your transmitter slightly to avoid full-lock that will at least stop it. 👍
@@RCModelsandMods will try it, thanks! if I will be unable to solve it, will return to classic metal axles. but its shame, I like these portals and they were not cheap.
Noticed that my rig shakes when I installed the metal driveshaft on my stock C24-1. Is that normal? Or should I save up for the portal axles? Still have not installed the metal links and suspension because the stock plastic ones flex better in my experience.
Hi. It may be that the gears arnt meshed properly. Or the driveshafts are out of sync. 😎👍

ive had these portal axles on my 34 for almost 2 years now and the only issue i have is the steering link. because its just plastic it will eventually bend and not steer right. highly reccommend a link made of stronger plastic or jut go metal. otherwise i love these portal axles

These axles are not plug and play, you have to mess with them and do some swapping and modding before they will work. I put plastic bushings in mine and they will actually rotate the axle shaft now. I do not recommend these unless you are mechanically inclined.

Thy nice just let down you need to improve to get to turn,but the bushing not really sure better some bearings,for the item should really be checked for mistakes 😕 but the improvement need to be done, I got reduced gearbox having on my truck be like more slow , better keep standard for me 😁

i can't find anywere the cvd's for the wpl portal axle, they broke so easily
Hi. Look on the WPL website or Banggood, Ali Express, Ebay, Amazon. Should be loads
I put these axles on my wpl, installed a two speed transmission, all electronics, and 3.35 inch crawler tires. Its a crawling beast.

Would these easily fit the aftermarket truss and adjustable links? Reckon better to wait but $25 for portals is worth a go even with the needed mods, thanks for sharing!
Cheers man! I haven't tried so can't be sure. But the standard link arm ends only just fitted on the standard truss as there wasn't much space between the portal axle and end of the truss.
The metal axles are the same deal you got to mess with them to get them right.
That's a shame. I thought they would have resolved the issues.
Will these fit on the WPL c74 Jimny?

Hi. You can't get parts as far as I am aware. You have to buy new sets.
Rbrc is not likely to sort anything out with those plastic axles they already got ur money.
Gonna get this portal axles for my C44, put some mud tires on it since added some ground clearances

1/10 It ussually comes broken. if not it will breake on first use because of NANOMILIMETER wall thickness of steering cups holding arms. Its insane force of reduction on nanomilimeter thick wall. Breaks instantly.

After much fitting and experimenting, I have found that these Portals are an EXCELLENT FIT , on the C34 an C44 Toyota. They look sweet, they look SCALE, have and awesome tread width, and just look FANTASTIC on that WPL Toyota series

there are sadly a number of issues with rbr/c parts, the 2 speed gearbox is often not running smooth, the 2-in 1 rear drive is a disaster (lots of gears, mostly casted and somehow none the exact same size, i had to stick them in the lathe to get them to work) and i have had issues with the metal axle housings as well (arrived with a bend in it, had to heat them up to straighten them) the parts may be inexpensive but the tools needed to make everything work as it should are not.

Great detailed review. Very useful. I've started building a set up into a truck. Good to see the C54 setup. Will have to think carefully if i use a set on that RC. 👍

Thank you for posting this :) MY WPL is going to be slowly upgraded. Portal axels i think i like for crawling, seems it is what i am looking for. I have solid metal rims, Look like semi rims, so i don't want all the weight of those big metal wpl axels out there. The portal looks like it was i am looking for. I am having so much FUN. Great video, my portal axles have recently arrived and I have been going through them eliminating all the tight spots. I'm hoping for good things from them as steering lock and ground clearance are both quite limited as standard. Not sure about the up on stilts look though!

That the only problem i see with the wpl is the 3rd maber ring and pion ive gone thru about 8 sets front and rear. Ive put traxxas 380 in it and modifed 12 air plane motor now brushless 2448. 2s . I have two c24 ones stock for parts. Other one pro modfied

Dont buy it of your rig is weighted 1kg and above. Easily broken plastic cover.
Which wheels and tyres won't bind on these axles. I got the rbrc c14 with these included, the supplied fayee wheels bind. My metal rbrc wheels won't even turn when I tried those.
Hi Simon! Hope you had a good Xmas and NY. I can't believe the Fayee wheels don't work with them when they are sold as a package. Ridiculous. The MN90 wheels do the same because the inside of the rim rubs on the portal gearbox even when the 4 or 5 thin ribs are removed. Might be worth seeing if you can file the rim back a bit with a dremel if it is that that's causing the binding. WPL wheels work as shown in the video, I think because they are narrower rims. I've tried the recent set of beadlock when I reviewed on them and they rub as well. 😬

Great post. I'm still waiting on mine to come in the mail. I found front c hub and for these that are aluminum. Really like the idea of these. Do you think a bearing kit will fit of the original wpl axles?
Thanks Josh!! Oooo I don't know. But these come with bearings throughout. You will definitely need the aluminium parts as the bits they replace are a weakness. 😎👍

Sorry Josh. My mistake. Bearings in the portal boxes but bushings everywhere else. I will try if I get a chance and let you know.

Yes it is. The top of both portal gear cases have cracked where the top screw goes in.

Yeah. Definately strip them down and check each section works properly, before greasing and putting back together.

I just bought 2 of the “new “ WPL portal axle crawler truck kits ( c14 with no bed).
To my amazement, before I even removed the axles from the plastic bag, the C CUP on both sides was already cracked in 2 places. The design of the axle managed to keep the C CUPS in place, but still BROKEN CRACKED right out of the box ! CRAP
So i see now somewhere in the guts of the china mainland that there is a set ( L&R) of ALUMINUM C CUP ASSEMBLY FOR A REPLACEMENT. What a lifesaver.
However the pair of C CUPS (l&R) were a tad bit expensive coming in at about an average of $14 usd a pair. Now in increasing the cost of the front axle by 100%.
So definitely worth the money if you want to have any kind lasting endurance without worry.

@@RCModelsandMods This as as close as I can get. Ebay is very difficult to extract a link or even a item number. Go to this parts description on ebay, and perhaps someone can get a link, but for now this should at least get you to the auction :

My axles were butter smooth. The problem with my portal boxes was the top screw that holds the portal case togeather was rubbing the top gear inside the portal box.
Hi. The problem I had was with the hole that that screw went into partially cracked and so is likely to break at some point. They sell metal replacement parts for these now - see the link in a recent comment on this vid. 🤜🤛
how do you solved it? remove the upper screws? thanks
@Tomáš Macháček I was able to see where the screw was rubbing on the gear so I was able to file the threads down on the screw a bit to make it clear the gear in the portal box.

@Tomáš Macháček the problem with them is they are a bad design all together. I wouldn't spend too much time on them.

I am worried about the durability of plastic mounting for the steering knucle. Looks like it wil catch many things on the run.
Hi. I see what you mean, but so far no issues with mine. It's the weak holes for the top fixing screws of the portal gearbox covers that is the biggest issue. Both of mine have cracked almost all the way through
@@RCModelsandMods Whats your solution/any tips to protect that weak holes?
Other than being really careful when putting the cover back on, I don't think there is a solution. Possibly apply some apoxy resin on the case above where the screw goes in to reinforce it, but I haven't tried it.

A full metal rebuild kit for a standard wpl axle is the same price as a pair of these.
