Quite a few people are saying the Samsung S22 Ultra doesn't have a color problem. We take this seriously and we'll test it further, in different situations, to validate our findings. Subscribe to see the follow-up. BUT, there were no filters applied and I double-checked the camera to make sure everything is set to the defaults. We didn't have color problems in every scenario; it was really just the blues that were a problem. Follow-up coming soon.

I have a feeling you might have accidentally tapped-to-expose on the galaxy, that forces it to compensate for the specific lighting conditions of the area you tapped on be it dark or bright. I've made the same mistake before. Just take the photos as it is, colours and exposure will come out more naturally. (PS. if you didn't tap to expose, get a replacement unit because it genuinely looks off)
Also, give the Expert Raw app a try, it's available for download in the Galaxy Store

The colors are not typical of an S22 ultra at all. I have to wonder if there is some setting or filter askew. My skies and shadows never look like that. I've owned Samsungs for a long time and this is not their color science. I would check the tap to expose setting or preset filter in the upper right corner of the camera app, this wasn't a fair comparison.

Everything is at the default... Not like the S22 has a "make everything teal" setting. I double-checked it.
The thing about color is that it's very specific to each scene, and you won't notice it unless you look side-by-side with another image. It handled skin tones fine. The waterfall scene was fine, the indoor scenes were fine. It's just not great at blue skies I guess.

    • @EverythingIsPhotogenic

There was definitely a hardware or software issue with the S22 at the time of this video, but plenty of people have said this already.
I also wanted to say that whilst the Pixel doesn’t support portrait mode on the telephoto, the telephoto itself already gives natural bokeh. Then, in Google Photos you can computationally add background blur to any photo aswell. This is much better than the digitally cropped and oversharpened main lense.

Love you guys! You’ve taught me so much!
I had $1,300 to spend on a new camera at the end of 2021 and I really wanted a Sony but nothing was really new enough or seemed like a good package at that price with the lens included. literally after months and months of research, I bought an iPhone 13 Pro Max as my main dedicated video camera for RUclips and I couldn’t be happier. Built-in battery, built-in memory, Wi-Fi, airdrop, computational elements, the list goes on.
I hope the major camera companies can catch up in the sub $1,200 range or the gap will just increase as young creators keep choosing iPhone. Especially now that the quality is getting closer to “real” cameras every year.
The only reason I see to get a “real” camera today starting from zero is if you are going to be working with actual clients and you didn’t wanna show up to a shoot/set with an iPhone.

Yes! I’d love to see an Olympus or Panasonic up against these phones. Pair them with something like the Pana 14/2.5 and a Pana 25/1.7 for short tele and a budget ultra wide like the SLR Magic 8mm f/4. In fact, through B&H a GX85 (16MP, 4K video, IBIS, viewfinder, rangefinder style for portability and a tilting touchscreen) with 12-32mm and 45-150mm zooms, both capable little travel options, and those three primes all combine to the cost of 1 iPhone 13 Pro Max at $1,100.

Taken a few images with the macro lens and people are shocked that it's a smartphone and works better than the potrait mode for macro. I also have a small handgrip/tripod/bluetooth remote that spring clips on (yeah, it's a bit janky) but works really well. It's so small and easy to carry that I actually think of grabbing it and going. It's the first addition I usually take with me

My curiosity is which would you rate as the best "over-all", and I use that tern in the sense of if you had to pick just one. While smartphones have advanced well beyond what I think anyone ever imagined, even just a few years ago, I don't think they will ever fully replace a "real" camera, at least not for still photography, video is a totally different subject.

Sorry, if you are a photographer and you take a photo and the snow is BLUE, you need to retake it.
The samsung camera app has this "scene optimizer " and can help or mess up photos.
Also, in the top the WAND icon has the filter setting, where you can literal have a custom white balance, skin tone correction and more.
Then there is the pro mode which is just like a manual camera. Still miss the S8,S9,S10 that had variable aperture and more consistent white balance in auto.

Last year I bought the bottom line Sony Xperia 10iii and I found that it was only using around 45 mpbs for H.264 in UHD (4K) 30 fps video, and yes, you can tell it is not that good. But I have not found anyone say what the better phones use. I assume the top line camera/phones would use at the least around 60 mpbs for H.264, but, well, nobody mentions it. I do not know what size the Xperia 10iii uses for 4K HEVC, but for that phones that support that compression it would also be interesting.

For the S22 ultra maybe check to see if the Auto HDR and Scene Optimizer functions are off. I echo the comments below, and I seem to get natural colors with mine with these off. This may account for the weird color. PS love you guys, and thanks for everything you guys do.

I am confused i have s22 ultra. And mine doesn't have that bad sky colors. Infact my sky colors look more beleivable than iphone in some shots. While in others iphone does batter. But overall its pretty similar. Yeah i only have problem with 108mp camera if detail enhancer is turned on. In my opinion detail enhancer is only perfect for indoors well lit area. But regular 108 mp is better for natural photography with less dynamic range and more detailed shots. But 12 mp mode with 3:4 ratio captures even most trickest of shots perfectly

You forgot to mention that the Pixel does not have any manual mode.
S22u does not really have a 108MP sensor, because the color filter is grouping 9 pixel next to each other on hardware level to 12MP.
Also Android can transfer photos to your PC, using Lightroom with Autoimport and sync does that (with LR Classic and the new one).

Am I the only greybeard who still gets techno-shocked sometimes? I'm considering these phones as an upgrade to my Pixel 3a, and I look at them in a modern context. Nice upgrade to familiar technology. Then my mind goes back to my first favorite phone, a slimline RadioShack cheapy that had incredibly clear audio, a ring that sounded like a cricket chirping, and a really long cord. I loved that phone.
Now and then, the leap from that to these Star Trek tricorder things we have today blows my mind. Makes me wonder what today's kids will see in 40 or 50 years.

  • @BruceRichardsonMusic

Tony and Chelsea...I just bought an S22 Ultra, and it looks to me like the color anomalies I see in your tests have been corrected. In fact, I was really surprised to see your shots, because those colors were SO off. I'm pretty happy. But I would have paid more, happily, for better glass quality across all the lenses, not just the one "hero" lens.
It also makes me sad that someone can't cram all the "computational photograpy" features into a proper real-sensor camera. It would be amazing to see a DSLR that is as "smart" as a Samsung or other top-tier camera phone. That would be a game changer. I feel like camera companies are just maddeningly missing the boat here.

Things you get right, others missing the sum of all parts. In photography as in cinématographie every particle of air counts...everything is important.
Each artist develops his/her own unique signature style. Each phone here suits some styles more than others. For filmmakers the iPhone 13 Pro Max is the best choice, period. For amazing photos of amazing world and people and nature I'd go with the S22 Ultra.

Another aspect I want to see is their RAW files. Apple pro raw seems to be very good from my 13 pro max. The macro image quality is way better with the main camera vs the ultra wide. But even with the main camera in macro mode, I noticed the color shift. The cinematic mode does work fantastic, especially you can edit everything in post in camera. I usually dialed back to f/5.6 for background blur, I found it way more pleasing to the eyes.
Would like to see the winner vs the Fujifilm X100V. Another pocketable day to day camera!
Those ultra 22 color looks horrible! Kinda remind me of the Huawei P30 pro!

One thing I never see on phone reviews is photos of people in dark environments, which for me, is probably the most common photos I see people take with their phones. Photos on nights out, in bars or restaurants, when people are often moving. With those sorts of candid photos, I find my iPhone really struggles to freeze the action in the way a proper camera can.

Tony & Chelsea, thanks for another great review. Increasingly, camera performance is becoming the key differentiating factor between (flagship) smartphones. However, 99.9% of the tubers doing such reviews haven’t got the faintest clue about photography. I feel there could be a real opportunity for you guys to do more smartphone camera reviews. There are many other capable brands and models out there that also deserve to be subjected to your scrutiny. As you repeatedly say in your videos, the medium to low-end camera market has been replaced by smartphones. You used to review such cameras, now they’re gone. It seems to me that there could be a real opportunity for qualified reviews of the smartphone cameras that replaced them.
