Pixel 7 pro user here. I understand the appeal of Apple's walled garden. I started falling down that hole but have fully recovered myself. I couldn't love iOS. Just couldn't. The watch was nice though. I am however only an amateur photographer and am more into photos than video. I can see that a professional would benefit from the iPhones video quality and the better raw quality.
Tony, I understand why you test top line smartphone cameras and I applaud your coverage, but one question that is overlooked is "why buy a topline phone in the first place?" I use a Sony Xperia 10 iii and the latest version (10 iv) is priced around $500 US while Sony's next model up, the 5 iv is priced around $1,000. Ok, personally. looking at the specs, I can see it is likely that the 5 iv is probably worth double the price. But that's the problem: "Probably." It would be nice if you could cover a couple of phones in different price brackets to see if you "get what you pay for." Personally, I'd like to see the Sonys, but the question is out there for a lot of brands -- not so much for Pixel since there is a clear similarity between there two models. I'm not so sure about Apple 14's right now.
The biggest single drawback to using smartphones for photography, at least for me, is their terrible ergonomics and camera controls. Even good 3rd party photo apps cannot overcome how physically uncomfortable the phones are to hold and operate for taking photos. That slab form factor, with only buttons on the rim, and screen controls that you have to fight, are such that I'll only take pictures with the phone if absolutely have to. If I'm going anywhere and even think I might be wanting to take pictures, I'll grab a camera.
I grab for a real camera now too and don’t pick a phone based on camera features any longer. There are reasons such as Tony pointed out like ergonomics with sharp edges 😂
Hi Tony, it would be great to see a follow up where you use Halide on the iPhone to shoot in true 48 MP HEIC, which makes it much more accessible for casual point and shoot users.
Great, fair, balanced review. I have a pixel 7 pro and it's crazy how bad the portrait mode is. If you have a stable subject and you have room to back up, the 5x telephoto lens can be good for natural portraits (no portrait mode necessary), though it's a bit softer than the main lens. But yeah, google have really gone backwards with portrait mode on the main lens.
The 1x portrait is pretty good. Using the 5x without portrait mode is also good. 2x in portrait mode really should not be an option. The older Pixel phones did not suggest 2x, which does drag the impression down for the newer ones.
Just an FYI to anyone interested, while the built-in camera app won't do 48 MP captures in JPEG/HEIF, the Halide app will on the iPhone 14 Pro. I assumed the quad-Bayer sensor was a joke, it really is amazing what it can do at the full 48 MP with sufficient light. At 80-100 MB a pop it's not worth shooting ProRAW to get 48 MP unless you really want the additional latitude in editing. But at ~10 MB, it's totally worth it to shoot in JPEG/HEIF at 48 MP.
Oh, interesting! I wish Apple would provide more options with the built-in camera app (like 48MP JPGs, tuning the face processing and sharpening, etc.)
@@TonyAndChelsea With Halide you can also disable most of the overprocessing (remove toggle on Enable Smartest Processing), but Halide is missing some amazing features of the main camera app, like image stabilization on the telephoto or night mode. It's infuriating.
A very fair comparison. I especially appreciate the comments about Apple's lock in. It's rare to see this sort of criticism coming from a photographer.
Those 48 MP images from the iPhone do have more detail compared to 12 MP images. It looks like Apple uses some advanced demosaic algorithm on the full-resolution image from the quad Bayer sensor, while Android phones just upscale binned 12 MP image.
I know it's not a popular choice but just got the Sony Xperia 1 IV and it's incredible. I was astonished to find out it has animal eye af just like my Sony A7IV.
Yeah it's great, too! It's more of a pure camera because it doesn't have much computational photography and it allows proper long exposures (especially with an ND).
One of the things I hate with my Iphone 13 Pro Max is trying to shoot through a chain link fence. The camera now jumps back and forth between WA and the standard lens and will grab the fence when it wasn't doing this before. The only fix I've found is by clicking on the box that pops up for a few secs, then it will say with the correct lens.
Please do a comparison between Pixel 7 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra. For some of us that's the comparison to look for since we are strictly Android users. 😀
Yes being pro android as I am anti closed architecture. I am having trouble even considering an iphone. A comparison between Pixel Pro7 and Samsung S22 Ultra would be great.
Much respect Tony for being an Apple user but still make impartial and honest review. Overall both phones shoot good photos and videos for the intended purpose : point-and-shot while trading blows here and there.
and the winner is .. hold up cause S23 Ultra coming and I don't know if Tony will ever get a Xiaomi 12s ultra and if Sony releases Xperia Pro-i ii near future. I am still holding up my breath for couple of month before I would decide which Phone I should buy or maybe get the X-T5 instead!
Nice review. The Pixel's portrait mode was truly awful! Did you take just the one photo with it? I love my freedoms and don't like the idea of paying a huge premium only to be treated life a serf. check 1:35 minute please and tell me that u are joking u are literally looking at the iphone and u say that is over sharpened(yes a little) and it's not adding any more details over the pixel 7 pro? am i blind or pixel shows the wall like a total mess (it's making it look like mud behind the flowers) on iphone u can clearly see the texture of the wall and the lines of it even in 12 mpx..when u compare be fair with everything in a picture
And I wouldn't buy Apple because I like to own the things that I buy. There was literally a court case that allowed Apple to update the software on your phone to make it stop working altogether. Apple actually argued to be allowed to do this. And the court allowed it.
same here. i hate the overprocessed photos of my iphone 13 pro, however, i am locked in my apple universe. have you thought about checking out the sony xperia? (like pro i oder 1 iv, the smartphones for photographers) btw: i really liked the photos of my previous iphone 7plus much more thn those of the 13 pro. even on the older tech they were at least more honest.
Need to take a look at the workflow for them both too. I'd love to see them syncing to my PC as I shoot. I am a dreamer apparently, who uses a PC now days?!

I like my Pixel 6, but I agree that Google's portrait mode is trash. I get better results taking a normal photo, then adding background blur after the fact in the Google editing app.
iPhone 14 Pro Max for the win…. Google Pixel is good but camera features out of box with the iPhone plus it’s ecosystem puts it above Google…. Also the iPhone camera app doesn’t crash like Googles. Also, remember when Steve Jobs created the iPhone it was supposed to be the Porsche of the phone market… he wanted to build a life style brand like Nike. Also there is a core belief at Apple that vertical integration is the best way at to go to ensure software, hardware, and user experience is fully optimized vs Android phones that use more generic parts.
When you compared the RAWs, you compared the iPhone with an Apple Profile with the Pixel with an Adobe Profile in Lightroom. I always change the Profile to Adobe with my RAW images to get a more neutral starting point.
@@andythealien1 The good thing is with the Apple profile there is a slider, so you can use just a little of Apples magic and do the rest yourself if Apple overdid it.

To me, it looks like all the ProRAW files display the same settings. I'm thinking that the iPhone processing is baked into the file and not reflected in the LrC settings. Your thoughts?

Every ProRAW is the combination of several raws, and only the result of that is in the file which then essentially is ab HDR file without any tone mapping. Additionally, the ProRAW file contains a mask with information on which pixels are to be pushed. You can see that in Lightroom when you have the latest version and you have the Apple Profile applied. Then you see a slider where you can change how strong this integrated adjustment layer is to be applied. If you push it to the very left, you see the pure RAW. Adopbe however has its own profile which tends to be more neutral than what Apple does.

It's why the iPhone is the choice of the most experts and the big mass consumers.. for different reasons.. but both know why they are and keep being with iOS/iPhone hardware..
That pixel really is terrible , you get an axing shot about 2-3 times out of 10 . So inconsistent. As for video it’s ok better than the 6pro but nowhere near iphone level . I actually prefer my 13 pro max to the pixel 7pro too. All the gimmick but still can’t win it
One extra bit of information for those looking at the Pixel: buy a magsafe case if you want to use magsafe accessories. Moment which is the brand of magsafe magnetic tripod mount shown here, makes a magsafe case which works fine with the Pixel 7 Pro.
Why didn't you use the Pixel's telephoto to do a portrait, and avoid that horrible over processing? The obsession with totally out of focus backgrounds is over done imo. A sense of place can often make a portrait more interesting.
The iPhone pro Max is twice (!) as expensive here so not really any competition. I would rather get a cheaper phone and a pocket camera like the RX series with 1" sensor.
How much of the flare in the iPhone into the sun pic (@6:30) would be eliminated with an ND filter ? 2 stops ? 4 stops ? How much dark detail would be lost ?
While I still reach for my "real" camera for anything telephoto I've found myself grabbing my phone a lot more recently. Love my Pixel Pro, but most modern flagship phones have pretty good quality.
My 14 Pro Max makes amazing macros and the ProRAW 48MP files look really nice. Still, they are not as nice or as detailed on a per-pixel level as the 6MP RAW files from my Nikon D70s that came out in 2005, which says a lot about fundamental physics not being overruled by technology. Even my S22 Ultra's 108MP camera can't beat that old Nikon APS-C sensor. Computational photography can make something edible and even yummy from bad ingredients, but it can't fool, much less satisfy, discerning eyes.
You'd be surprised! Do some side-by-side comparisons, including low light and astrophotography. The iPhone will win most common photo scenarios, according to our testing.
Good thoughts and review. I’ve tried the rebel thing haha and it didn’t work. Had to carry two phones if I wanted to stay in family and friend circles. Using only iPhone just makes me want to use it less as I prefer how Android works for reasons you touched upon. I had the 12 Pro Max for a year and had to use a case too. Ugh Apple eh?

Absolutely! Try Halide Mark II- it’s far better than the default camera App. You can chose to just shoot in Proraw with minimal computational adjustments.
Great review/comparison as always. I too am locked into Apple with my iPhone, iPad, iMac and all that go with them. I'm still happy though because the integration is great, so I'm willing to live with it.
would like to see a comparison of video taken indoors, and between the ultrawide and standard/wide lenses (because ultrawide is more useful focal length but sensor isn't as good). GREAT VIDEOS! Wow. Surprised you came to the opposite conclusion about astro vs. other reviewers.

Hey Tony great video I have the 14 pro max and my face detection with or without my mask on is just as fast opening, maybe your settings are wrong:) also I also use LR classic do you edit on your phone or computer? not sure how to transfer to computer
I have both and for overall use, I still prefer the the iPhone. The app crashing albeit not crazy bad, but is frustrating. I prefer the user experience of iOS. Apps are better optimized. The Pixel is my favorite Android edging out the Samsung Ultra 22, my previous fav Android. Great vid!
I greatly enjoyed the video and you being professional photographer you pointed out some things that could be important if I was looking to blow up or print out my photos. Usually I just take a photo and share it through Messenger or social media but there could be time when I want to blow up one and the details you pointed out is something I will have to keep in mind. I myself have the s21 ultra Samsung and I absolutely love it but I still like looking at other phones as well so I have a good idea of what is out there for my next possible purchase. I’m not sure how it’s ‘unfair’ for Apple to make their products to work better together, to integrate better, and to be more easily functional. That being said, this was a well done review, exploring the strengths and weakness of each phone’s camera system. Thanks.
Because they don't grant the same connectivity options to third-parties. They could let Android fully participate in iMessage, for example, but they block them. They pressure consumers to choose iPhone by making it uncomfortable to text non iPhone users. APIs that are available to Apple accessories, such as the Apple Watch and Airpods, are not made available to third-parties. They're reducing consumer choices by artificially extending their market domination from smartphones to computers, headphones, watches, etc.

Thanks for this review. I was on the fence about the pixel 7 pro, but seeing how bafflingly bad the portrait mode is I'm going to skip and wait for something better to come on the radar. Apple is not an option due to the anti competitive behaviors you mentioned. I'm not going to buy anything from a company that is actively hostile against its customers.
I ended up getting the galaxy S22 after looking at everything the big daddy S22 would have been a better choice but I hate big phones and big cameras 😂 so I stayed small im pretty impressed with it over all definitely does a better job at night then the S10

The s22 ultra has updated it's software. There's also a camera assistant app on good lock now that's lets you adjust the camera lens you use, and shutter lag decrease

Yeah this is very true. Check out the Sony Xperia cameras - some of them have a camera strap and they all have a proper shutter. Better than nothing!
What he said... Xperia pro-I or 1 IV are both great phones and the closest you will get to a camera from a phone.
The best one is Sony Xperia shutter button
On the iPhone, you can press either volume button (including ones on headphones) to hit the shutter. No need to touch the screen.

Great video - iPhone’s over processing and dirty sharpening is ridiculous. I always shoot in RAW to mitigate to dine extent

The walled garden works both ways. I wouldn't ever buy into Apple because I know literally maybe 1-2 people using the Iphone.

That pixel really is terrible , you get an axing shot about 2-3 times out of 10 . So inconsistent. As for video it’s ok better than the 6pro but nowhere near iphone level . I actually prefer my 13 pro max to the pixel 7pro too. All the gimmick but still can’t win it

One extra bit of information for those looking at the Pixel: buy a magsafe case if you want to use magsafe accessories. Moment which is the brand of magsafe magnetic tripod mount shown here, makes a magsafe case which works fine with the Pixel 7 Pro.
Why didn't you use the Pixel's telephoto to do a portrait, and avoid that horrible over processing? The obsession with totally out of focus backgrounds is over done imo. A sense of place can often make a portrait more interesting.
The iPhone pro Max is twice (!) as expensive here so not really any competition. I would rather get a cheaper phone and a pocket camera like the RX series with 1" sensor.
How much of the flare in the iPhone into the sun pic (@6:30) would be eliminated with an ND filter ? 2 stops ? 4 stops ? How much dark detail would be lost ?

While I still reach for my "real" camera for anything telephoto I've found myself grabbing my phone a lot more recently. Love my Pixel Pro, but most modern flagship phones have pretty good quality.
My 14 Pro Max makes amazing macros and the ProRAW 48MP files look really nice. Still, they are not as nice or as detailed on a per-pixel level as the 6MP RAW files from my Nikon D70s that came out in 2005, which says a lot about fundamental physics not being overruled by technology. Even my S22 Ultra's 108MP camera can't beat that old Nikon APS-C sensor.
Computational photography can make something edible and even yummy from bad ingredients, but it can't fool, much less satisfy, discerning eyes.
You'd be surprised! Do some side-by-side comparisons, including low light and astrophotography. The iPhone will win most common photo scenarios, according to our testing.

Good thoughts and review. I’ve tried the rebel thing haha and it didn’t work. Had to carry two phones if I wanted to stay in family and friend circles. Using only iPhone just makes me want to use it less as I prefer how Android works for reasons you touched upon. I had the 12 Pro Max for a year and had to use a case too. Ugh Apple eh?

Absolutely! Try Halide Mark II- it’s far better than the default camera App. You can chose to just shoot in Proraw with minimal computational adjustments.
The unlock with Apple Watch while using mask (I don’t have unlock with mask on because security implications) basically saved Face ID for me….

I previously made a video where I said my past experience with other smartphones showed no additional detail, but subscribe to see the actual test. Then, as promised, I made this video where I actually test it and show that it does have slightly more detail.
Pixel in mu County costs almost the half of iphone. I could compromise the quality a bit, and save almost half. Pixel for me.

Hey Tony great video I have the 14 pro max and my face detection with or without my mask on is just as fast opening, maybe your settings are wrong:) also I also use LR classic do you edit on your phone or computer? not sure how to transfer to computer

I have both and for overall use, I still prefer the the iPhone. The app crashing albeit not crazy bad, but is frustrating. I prefer the user experience of iOS. Apps are better optimized. The Pixel is my favorite Android edging out the Samsung Ultra 22, my previous fav Android. Great vid!

I greatly enjoyed the video and you being professional photographer you pointed out some things that could be important if I was looking to blow up or print out my photos. Usually I just take a photo and share it through Messenger or social media but there could be time when I want to blow up one and the details you pointed out is something I will have to keep in mind. I myself have the s21 ultra Samsung and I absolutely love it but I still like looking at other phones as well so I have a good idea of what is out there for my next possible purchase. I’m not sure how it’s ‘unfair’ for Apple to make their products to work better together, to integrate better, and to be more easily functional. That being said, this was a well done review, exploring the strengths and weakness of each phone’s camera system. Thanks.
Because they don't grant the same connectivity options to third-parties. They could let Android fully participate in iMessage, for example, but they block them. They pressure consumers to choose iPhone by making it uncomfortable to text non iPhone users. APIs that are available to Apple accessories, such as the Apple Watch and Airpods, are not made available to third-parties. They're reducing consumer choices by artificially extending their market domination from smartphones to computers, headphones, watches, etc.
For mag safe: There is a phone case for any phone that has mag safe, I'm using one on my s22 Ultra now.

Thanks for this review. I was on the fence about the pixel 7 pro, but seeing how bafflingly bad the portrait mode is I'm going to skip and wait for something better to come on the radar.
Apple is not an option due to the anti competitive behaviors you mentioned. I'm not going to buy anything from a company that is actively hostile against its customers.

I ended up getting the galaxy S22 after looking at everything the big daddy S22 would have been a better choice but I hate big phones and big cameras 😂 so I stayed small im pretty impressed with it over all definitely does a better job at night then the S10

I almost got the pixil decided to go s22 ultra and im glad i did the Bat life is amazing and the features are abundant and the camera is fantastic
The s22 ultra has updated it's software. There's also a camera assistant app on good lock now that's lets you adjust the camera lens you use, and shutter lag decrease
