  • We review the new Sony Xperia Pro-I smartphone ($1,800!) vs the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max to see which as the better camera. The Xperia Pro-I is SO new that the software isn't 100% ready, so Sony asked us to focus on the 24mm lens. We test it for vlogging, night photography, long exposures, and daylight photography.

      @@KalpeshPatel78 not really, the thing every single video leaves out of the equation is the plethora of third party apps that expand the capabilities of the iPhone to a whole nother level. For example the app “Even longer” lets you do RAW long exposure, star trail and light trail for up to 10 continuous hours all stitched realtime. If you’re serious about mobile photography the power is in third party apps, don’t really get why everyone only reviews the stock camera app and forgets the things that make a smartphone… smart, apps.

    great suggestions for Sony... As a Sony dSLR user I would be interested in knowing if they have integrated software apps to allow for remote control of the Alpha cameras. It would be great to have an external monitor and an "easy" connection for displaying and accessing images shot on the dSLR. Something superior to Imaging Edge. It could offer software algorithms to optimize taking photos. It could integrate with user settings controls. Imagine all the additional custom buttons options saved on the phone. It could even store multiple settings as favourites - like memory settings - but with a full description of all the ones saved so you can customize and see the results. It could help me remember all the custom settings - movies and photos etc...

      Oh come on whats up with everyone bringing up the tripod. It is just pretty rare scenario and even when bringing it, phone tripod is still a tiny thing that can fit into your pocket, can't say the same about the camera. The point about having a phone like this is that it is always with you for any kind of situation you might want to capture. Different use case than full frame camera obviously.

      @@MrMozkoZrout Well the Sony RX100M7 does fit in the pocket and will leave this Sony phone in the dust and cost $500 less. You are missing the point….the reason why we bring up the tripod is because it matters, most people want to use their phone camera as is, not carry tripods and spending extra time on software. I can imagine someone at a wedding dressed up all nice and having a tripod on the pocket all night waiting for the perfect moment to pull it out and use it… 😂or a woman with her dress… where would she put the tripod in that case? 🤔it just doesn’t make sense and that is why we bring it up. Not to count how the iphone takes better pictures around 90% of the time.

    • @MrMozkoZrout
      @MrMozkoZrout 2 года назад +3

      @@canillocanillo3371 Well do you actually carry RX100M7 with you in your pocket every day ? Of course not, it is still totally different use case from a phone. I meant you need the tripod for some crazy nightime pics, or pictures of stars or moving waterfalls. The point just was that contrary to other phones, this one actually lets you do that but you won't need the tripod for most of your phototaking needs. Besides as i said, smartphone tripods are tiny, you could easily have it in that wedding suit that you brought up for some reason. I mean suits have tons of pockets btw. But i mean even using the woman with a dress as an example and asking where would she put the phone while it is well known mystery where do girls even put their regular phones while wearing dress kinda shows that you are making the same mistake as other reviewers. You expect this phone to be a phone for everyone, for the common user but it's not. Normal Sony lineup isn't for the same audience as Samsung S series or iPhones and the Pro phones even more so. These phones do way less things for you automatically but give you tons of options to set things manually, they are tuned to take as natural pics as possible. And yeah i agree that this is not desirable for common people. It also doesn't mean it is meant only for proffesionals or to be a replacement of a dslr or some point and shoot camera. Just a camera centric phone taking a different approach meant for people that enjoy tweaking things and playing around.

      I love photography and have a low-end Canon DSLR (APS-C) along with a few lenses. I was enticed by the Xperia 5 II for all its photo capabilities and when I could get one of those through work I did so. But when I was out testing it I realized one thing pretty quickly. That no matter what app with manual settings you have it will never be the same as shooting on a dedicated camera, since you cannot control the aperture or change lenses. It is such an integral part of "real" photography to decide the aperture based on what you're shooting that it simply was not fun on the phone. I used the pro-apps the first week. Since then I always use the basic photo app with at most some manual exposure settings. There are 3 different lenses on my phone, but since both the extra wide and tele are worse than the main one, they simply are not good enough.
      This camera do have aperture settings, but only two options. Its still not the same.
      This phone is aimed at people vlogging or to be used as monitor together with Sony cameras etc. The price makes sure that no other people would ever want to buy it aswell.

      Yes, agreed, but a few things this has that goes a long way to make it better. The strap and the dedicated shutter button.
      I’ve used phones with dedicated camera buttons , as long as it’s responsive, it makes it a huge improvement. If you can add a strap plus good grip (will there be an insensitive portion of the screen you can hold?) that would be close enough for me. As much as I enjoy shooting with a real camera, sometimes it’s just a chore to haul around a 2nd device, no matter how small (even Pentax Q system)

    From DPreview “The big story is of course the 1"-type stacked CMOS sensor from the RX100 VII. However, in order to keep the phone small, Sony has designed a lens that can't project an image circle large enough to cover the entire area of the 1" sensor. That's why, instead of 20MP images, as you'd get from the RX100 VII camera, you get 12MP images. But this has a broader implication: the combination of a slower F2 lens (than many of its smartphone peers) and a sensor that's not quite as big as a 1"-type sensor means the image quality might not meet the initial expectations you might have when you think 'smartphone with RX100 sensor'. In fact, if you consider just the area used for 12MP stills, it has roughly a 12mm diagonal and 70mm2 sensor surface area: closer to the specs of a 1/1.31" sensor (such as the one in the Google Pixel 6).”

    Before many years in 2014 Panasonic had released the first 1" sensor smartphone. The Lumix DMC-CM1 smartphone with a 28mm (35mm equivalent) f/2.8 lens. According to reviews then, the sensor was by far the best in the smartphone market but the optical performance of the lens at the corners wasn't great. Maybe for that reasons the lens of the forthcoming Sony 1" smartphone has two apertures. An f/2.0 aperture for lower ISO and depth of field when is needed and an f/4 for better sharpness from corner to corner when there is plenty of light. Nevertheless the Lumix DMC-CM1 was an important achievement in 2014.
    Earlier in 2021 the the Sharp Aquos R6 and the Leitz Phone 1 have been released. Both with one inch 20 megapixel image sensor, both with Leica 19mm (35mm equivalent) f/1.9 ASPH. Summicron lens and probably both with Sony image sensor.
    It is well know that Sony sells image sensors to other companies like Apple, Nikon, Hasselblad etc.
    If the sensor of the Sony Xperia PRO-I is 20 megapixel too, it should be the same with Sharp and Leitz smartphones.

      it's not that the software is poor it's a question of technical choices. Sony will prefer to keep images that are natural and true to reality. When other manufacturers will distort this reality, especially at night when most manufacturers will choose to artificially light the photo but for me it loses the interest of a night photo and the atmosphere that goes with it, here the comparison with the iPhone the only difference is with the ISOs Sony is conservative and attempts to render an image with less noise the iPhone tries to make the image look beautiful on a small screen but quickly turns into a mush of pixels filled with noise on large print or large screen (ISO 10,000 is huge)

Although I love that Sony is riding the smartphone wave, unlike other camera manufacturers - they won't be left behind when smartphones eventually take over certain types of photography. As a photographer, I'd rather use a Vivo X70 Pro Plus which is $800 dollars cheaper and will probably beat this phone for night shots, portraits and zoom shoots. The Vivo X70 also has Zeiss T* coated lenses, has incredible bokeh in portraits and has a manual mode for bracketing, intervalometer and up to 32 sec long exposures. If you want a better comparison try that. Also as to your point about putting the Xperia on a tripod etc. if you're going to do all of that, just use a mirrorless or prosumer camera with better sensors/lenses, why bother with a smartphone?

As for day-to-day use, for a power user like me, the iPhone lacks all the following (in addition to not being Android): headphone jack, SD card slot, 4K120 recording RAW, dual speakers, IP68 rating, no notch, fingerprint reader NOT on the screen, matte finish (so no fingerprints on the body), physical camera button, really good DACs, OLED 4K 120Hz 10 bit screen...need I go on?

      @@spdcrzy cameras are too expensive? What about the phone for 2k?

    • @spdcrzy
      @spdcrzy 2 года назад +3

      @@belok177 The "phone" hardware ITSELF is probably worth $1000 (888, 512GB/12GB, 5G, 4K HDR OLED 120Hz screen, etc. etc. etc.). I'd say getting a $1000 camera sensor on top of that for $1800 is a pretty good deal. Don't forget that, for quite a few people, this won't just be their PRIMARY device, it'll be their ONLY device.

    So why can't just Sony make their auto setting similar to the iPhone's or Huawei's?
    What's so difficult about doing that?

    • @OmarSS87
      @OmarSS87 2 года назад

      Only difference is lack of auto HDR.
      You can turn on when P mode is selected.
      This way, even 5ii can do better than iphone.
      Without making photo completely unrealistic and blueish

      It is mostly about the direction these companies are trying to go. Samsung and Huawei ususally like to oversaturate pictures, 'enhance' them with AI. iPhones love to oversharpen stuff. All of them make night pictures look like afternoon. They force HDR everywhere so sure u have detail in highlights and shadows as well but sometimes you lose the dramatic effect in pictures. Sony simply wants their phones to take pictures more like traditional cameras. To capture the scene in the way it actually looks like. It uses some enhancment, mostly taken from their actual cameras but it is very subtle and definetly not as aggresive as other brands. It is just the direction Sony is going. It is a phone for people that like to tweak stuff and play around rather than people that just don't want to think about this stuff and let the device do all the work for them. And people like that exist too and it is good that there is diversity in these approaches because both are valid. Shame that so many TechTubers don't give Sony enough credit for it tho.

    • @PotatoSoKawaii
      @PotatoSoKawaii 2 года назад

      Sony encourages their user to shoot RAW while other brands just point and shoot. Sony camera really bad at computational photography. Sony can't beat the competitors unless they really try to improve the HDR. But who buys Sony phones for camera? Well maybe some but with that amount of money, I'd buy an actual Sony camera.

    • @MrMozkoZrout
      @MrMozkoZrout 2 года назад

      @@PotatoSoKawaii Ah i swear to god, why every freaking time phones from Sony are mentioned. There is always somebody who says that they would rather buy a real camera or that the phone is only for photographer proffesionals and those already have a camera. No. Camera and phone have absolutely different use case. If you are in a market for a phone you won't just say huh this is expensive guess i'll buy a camera then. If you want a phone and you like to take pictures and you like the approach Sony is going with here its the only phone on the market that offers that.

    I agree with the points you made.
    It would be interesting to see overheating tests, see how many pics or how long it can record in mid summer temps like 30c. Xz premium only lasted few seconds before wit got a warning so jud tfew pics. So rendered the phone usless for photography in midsummer. I hope my new A52s will do better, it sure did websurfing and gaming. But I will get a mirror less camera. I've notbdesided yet, so far Sony A7IV, Lumix s5, Canon R6 are possible options.

    The night shot is not an "apples to apples" comparison (excuse the pun). The iPhone is 1 sec exposure, ISO 2000 presumably handheld v 30 sec, ISO100, tripod mounted for the Sony. Obviously the light capture by the Sony is going to be far greater! The lower ISO will give less granularity and the tripod much less micro movement. When you then "pixel peep" obviously you are going to see a difference. It is disingenuous and misleading to not make these differences explicit. The Sony may be better in low light but this test does not prove it one way or the other.

    If you turn on live photos with the iPhone, you can actually select "Long Exposure" as a filter on it and it'll convert the live photo to a long exposure close to the same look that you got with the Sony. This feature isn't very well known but it is there to use and much better than trying to do long exposure the manual way.
