      @Derek Gardin What’s wrong with including an access panel in the trunk? Is that too unreasonable a demand? Cars like BMWs and Mercedes often have their struts replaced twice in a car’s lifespan, it’s how their suspension is sprung, very sporty, more jarring in the road and on suspension components.

They work great and went in nicely. In fact, I used the same kind you are using in this video. It's definitely worth doing and not as hard as I thought it would be.

    I've used quick struts in the past, and they are great. On our 2001 Buick that had 170,000 miles, the replacements had stiffer springs, so the car ride was harsher. On that car, the nuts for the top of the struts were under a rubber cup, and very easy to get to just by opening the trunk lid. The ones I installed on our 1998 Mercury Villager were just like the original ride. I also installed new ones in my daughter's 2002 Hyundai were also like the original springs, and they were also very easy to install, just like the Buick.

    I've done this a couple times and it really is the best way to do it. My only problem was the car I did it on was so old it was hard to find quick strut assemblies for it. You can do it with hand tools but having an impact that makes it a much easier and it does it only take a few hours.

However, you must be warned that it takes serious elbow grease to get the old parts unbolted. 3 of them, one on the strut and two on the stabilizer links were impossible to get off, so I used an angle grinder to remove them. They'll sell the same strut for the 4 cylinder car with a stick as they do the 6 cylinder car with the automatic. Also quality control is no prize at KYB, I put some shocks on the front of my Town Car and my front end was moving through the air like it was on the high seas.

    By the time a strut is worn out the spring is usually rusting and sagging and ready to crack so you may as well replace the whole thing rather than have to take it all apart again later to replace the spring.

    • @MrMOGHammer
      @MrMOGHammer 2 года назад

      And then probably replace the strut anyway because the sagging springs worn it off early. It’s like changing brake pads but keep the about to give up disks. You end up changing both the pads and the disks after a few months

    The advice on oil replacement vs engine rebuild is the best advice. If it uses only one quart per oil change the break even, if the rebuild was only $500(which is a VERY low estimate, since you'd need a ride/rental as well while the car is in the shop), would be 800,000 miles when oil is only about $5/quart. Just put the oil in and keep driving. Increasing change frequency from every 8,000 to every 5,000 might keep other parts from wearing as rapidly even with the consumption.
    😎

  • @PsychoCPU
    @PsychoCPU 3 года назад +1

    An extra piece of advice! Those bottom bolts can be pretty hard to get out, especially if they've got decent miles on them or the vehicle has been in a state that salts in the winter. Spraying them down with some penetrating oil and tapping the bottom of the strut housing with a dead blow hammer can save you a ton of aggravation. I changed the entire suspension on my 2013 Nissan Quest about 6 months ago because the driver's side strut was blown out (accidentally got bottomed out into a ditch) and even with under 100k miles and not a spec of rust there was enough oxidization on the inner collar of the bolts that I had to let them sit with some PB blaster for half an hour to get them out, even with an impact.

    • @PsychoCPU
      @PsychoCPU 3 года назад

      @Mark Codiroli Yes, I was talking about corrosion that occurs behind the head of the bolt where it seats against the mount on the hub. You can get the nut off the bolt but the bolt itself can stay stuck in the strut due to this corrosion. It can seep inside the barrel of the bolt housing in the strut and make it incredibly hard to get out.

    Not only Honda but my dad as well are advising I get ahold of front shock struts for my Honda Civic cause when goin over humps the car bounces and goin over small bumps you can feel the bumps due to all that vibration felt. It also sounds like something broke if you go over rough spots on the road but I check and nothing did its just the struts but ya know its an old used vehicle so I wouldn't be surprised about the struts. Idk if I should just live with the current ones just be careful on the road or do get new struts

      @@maxcactus7 The only way is with the proper testing equipment like we use to set up track cars but the spring thickness is often an easy visual indication. Also seen lots of them using improper setups for the cars suspension. Some cars are designed for progressive springs and others linear.
