THIS!! I paid extra for the version that comes with the current and last gen versions and...I can't see much difference (if any). Already beat the Xbox Series X version. Currently playing it on Xbox One X (for the Achievements!)
Well clearly last gen can’t achieve the same graphical prowess so no ray tracing or god rays much worse Shadows way worse skin textures last gen has been pushed to the max
I was hoping to see the last gen version. As of now it looks like they kind of got a pass. They charged an extra $10 for basically nothing. I don't love paying extra but at least with games like NBA 2K or Horizon etc. there's an actual upgrade that I can see between current and gens.
I'm curious to see how the One X version does against the Series S. If I have to guess I'd say that the One X version runs at a higher resolution while the Series S has better lighting and more in the way of post processing. I'm sure the Series S loads much faster too. But, in a lot of cases I would take the higher resolution (especially when dipping below 1080p) over fancier lighting and higher ambient occlusion. As for the bs $10 premium, I'm doubly against it when a game is cross-gen. No extra innovation. Just prettier and loads faster. This isn't a Shadow of Mordor situation where the previous gen loses a feature like the nemesis system. Heck, they can't even fall back on (limited) raytracing. I'll wait for a deep sale.

@@zucar1tas i have a series x, but I don’t get the “cutback”part. just don’t think the wording is appropriate in this situation. With that logic every game is cutback if it’s not on a 12900k with a 3090TI.
@@braedonlock3359 yep, i think cutback has a more negative connotation. But yeah, like I said, game looks stunning still on the S, you can see all the improvements from earlier games like Man of Medan or Little Hope. Can't wait for The Devil in Me, my GF and I love Supermassive games, we had a Switch since 2019 and last year we bought the Series S, it's a great console and we're really happy with it, even more taking into account that in our country the S is 400 dollars and the X and PS5 are like 900 dollars or more, so is not a really difficult choice. The Series S really is a godsend for countries with trashy economies.
@@braedonlock3359 You're technically right but he means RELATIVELY. Meaning compared to the premium consoles and PC version, the settings are lowered because the developers don't make the game in lower quality form and then up the settings for more powerful hardware but the opposite; or in other words, cutbacks to the vision that they originally created. Like for example an original cartoony switch game does not have cutbacks but when they port a game like The Witcher 3 on Switch, that's a highly compromised version, Series S is kind of like that in a lot of more demanding games.
@@childofvenus3781 yes so with that logic every game is cutback from a 3090ti. I get what they were saying i just think cutback isn’t the right wording. As everything then besides the most powerful hardware is cutback.
They've really gotten the overall rendering and motion capture of the actors down at this point, I still just think the biggest problem (which also leads into the deepest uncanny valley) is that you can always tell that the actors had their facial capture done separately from their body capture, they were placed in a chair surrounded by cameras, perfectly lit with, probably, noone to act/react/look to during the process, it leads to the characters often seeming to look THROUGH each other rather than at each other. Once they get that part down, we're golden. Anyway, thanks for the video as usual Tom.
Kind of a shame to see this video talking about the godray glitch on PS5 when a week ago the patch that introduced online play already fixed it and that is not even mentioned...
@@jack_knife-1478 yes... It's ok now... The patch that was released last week added online play and the deluxe content(80 costumes) that was missing at launch, and also fixed the godray fx alongside some crashes when using the new "death rewind" feature... It's all fine now.

The biggest contribution to the uncanny valley effect i think is the fact that they have no inner mouth movement, giving them sort of a muppet vibe; You can definitely see it when the characters have bigger mouths, or yell. Also neck rigging kinda makes their heads look like they're swiveling on a stick. Still gorgeous though!

@@1984rockabilly that’s dependent on a game by game basis honestly. I have both and I can honestly say that there are games on my ps5 that look much better than forza halo and gears. By spec, the Xbox is slightly better but actual visuals isn’t all specs. It’s dependent on the game developers and how well they optimize games and PlayStations studios do a much better job at it, even with slightly weaker hardware. It's official now that consoles are holding back the development of cutting-edge games. Every title now needs to have a mode where it will run on 8+ year old crappy console hardware.
PlayStation 5 / Xbox Series X having comparable visuals, and performance to the Rtx 3060ti Ryzen Pc is very impressive considering the 3060ti costs nearly as much as the Consoles alone by itself and so the price to performance advantage of the New Consoles is Uber impressive to say the least ! Yea the Rtx 3060ti can technically use higher settings but that’s when it runs only 24fps average so yea In order for it to sustain the same level of 30fps performance it’s gotta use Console equivalent settings and so it seems as though the New Machine’s are holding their own against mid range Pc gaming builds at just a fraction of the cost and that’s why Consoles have existed as long as they have because of their value compared to Pc as ya simply can’t match their price to performance ratio especially now days with the price of Pc hardware
Question is are you sure the consoles are using 100% of its hardware power on this game? All I see here is medium shadows + DRS and capped FPS. Nowhere it states that the consoles is stressed enough to run this game at 30fps, maybe unlocked fps and native 4k will stress both ps5/series x.
Lol it's not, gpus can push more, but the devs cap these games to the lowest so it can run on any hardware, example, the ray tracing capabilities on consoles are shit, but modded games on PC shows how much gpu can push. Logically, hi end gpus weren't the benchmark. Consoles today are awesome for the price tho.
Perfect timing. I have a Xbox one x. And I'm looking to get a series x this Friday. Im hoping it's a decent improvement. Between lag input and visible on maps.
DF slow walks.. meanwhile, every clip xbox Series X has sharper images. Light effects are outstanding. Ps5 is a ps4 pro. Lets be real. 4k is aspect ratio for 55inch tvs not image quality. DF really reaching for something
Not gonna lie- I don't like the look of those "ultra" shadows. They are way too sharp. They should be softer and more diffused. The lower quality shadows look more natural to me. I figured an Unreal engine game would have the shadow penumbra
Neither look good to me as I think the console settings are far too jagged and ultra is way too sharp like many older games. They should of had a form on PCSS or something to really soften the shadow edges. Weirdly to say I’ve seen plenty of games have far better shadows like genshin impact on PC which is strange or a more realistic comparison RDR2
Yeah I agree. Ultra shadows shouldn’t simply get sharper edges. They should feather out softly, just with less jaggies as the quality goes up. I’ve had this issue with game shadow settings since the mid 2000’s when looking at PC versions running them at ultra settings. Obviously, RT shadows fixes this in one step, but there are plenty of ways to make the shadows look more natural without resorting to RT.
it really depends on the implementation of it if you are outside and there's a light source yes shadows should look defused but if you are in a well lit room that's somewhat small the shadows should be more defined and sharper remember it all depends on specific locations
@@blazer4185 Correct. Usually tree branches and power lines do not make razor sharp shadows on the ground and walls of houses lol. Those are the main kinds that really stand out. The distance of the subject from the surface as well as the distance of the subject and light source play a huge role in the makeup of shadows.
Not sure you can call something you mainly watch, a game… why don’t SM make a series/ movie instead of a movie with the odd quick-time event and calling it a game..?
It's definitely a bug when factoring the Series S even has it, the PS5 should had easily gotten the mentioned missing feature. The PS5 has been on par with XSX in term of power narrative since the start of this generation.
Series x averages higher resolution what is that the last 6 games for series x? The gap is widening and will only become bigger when these huge next gen titles really stress the hardware.

@@poethefallen1333 lol “while we” i have a playstation so I’ll definitely be playing that. But that doesn’t change my statement being true. Just because someone makes a statement against your mighty playstation doesn’t mean it has to be biased.
@@braedonlock3359 I don’t really see the gap to be honest. It’s the same thing that biased fanboys hyping minor differences. In F1 22 both systems have the same stable 60 fps and 4K. Ps5 had this minor issue with RT (which might be is just a bug), Xbox SX had this very minor tearing in 120 fps mode - could also be improved with a patch. The Quarry runs with a slightly higher res on SX, won’t be visible on a regular size 4K tv (55 or 65 inches). Ps5 had the missing god rays that were added in a recent patch. For fanboys it’s a crazy hype about differences that are not really there. The last one with a really noticeable difference was the Skywalker saga. SX version is simply better as ps5. It’s sometimes fun with the console war, I’m also in sometimes, especially on Twitter 😄 but if we are honest there are no crazy differences between those systems.
30fps is horrible even for a movie game. Any game where you can move the camera looks so blurry at low framerates. They changed $70 more than the X One version and it’s still just 30fps. A movie doesn’t make everything in the scenery blurry when the camera pans around like it does in a game even at 30fps which is a bit higher than films. Different mediums and we need to let this 30fps die off. Crazy to not even give us an option for 1440p at 60fps. A good tv will upscale to 4K anyways but it’s not gonna make a blurry ass 30fps look clear.
Pretty sure this game isn't optimized properly for PS5, Sony has games like ratchet and clank and spiderman etc running at 4k 30 WITH rt and no drops and you're telling these people cant get a movie game to run right? clearly not enough went into this for the PS5 version.
You're right about the Emma character. I noticed it too. It's as if her mo cap mouth is too big and making the mouth movements too over the top for the character model or something. Which is weird because the other characters are fine for the most part.
The game page States that full audio is available in multiple languages if there is no setting to change it. The retro 80s outfits also don’t seem to have a setting to switch them out, so I’m sure there are going to be some update patches to fix all the frame rate or lighting problems as well. They have an amazing game on their hands if they will be cranking out a lot of bug fixes to try to make up for the fact that this game was released in such an unfinished state.
I didn't care that it's a story driven game. I'm not playing it in 30fps . For me from henceforth it's 30fps ps plus vs 60fps purchase. Developers take your pick.

interesting, but it does feel very uncanny valley. The shadows look far too harsh giving it a plastic look. The close up camera just should make things look better, but it looks like the face is about to fall off the model. It's a fascinating experiment, but now I'm curious who owns Digital Domain? Last time I heard from them was like 12 years ago when Michael Bay owned them and before that James Cameron. Very interesting company because I know they worked on Marvel films and were a part of Fight Club back in the day.

It's weird how their games are always deep in the uncanny valley with regard to facial animations. Horizon Forbidden West has the most realistic faces I've ever seen in a game yet it never enters the uncanny valley. I don't know why Super Massive hasn't improved in this aspect. These games remind me of The Polar Express or Beowulf.
It’s probably because they’re not using their own engine. They switched engines a lot, going from Decima for Until Dawn and now Unreal Engine, don’t forget they have Multiplatform focus too, so the polish isn’t the same as first party games.

In the absence of AAA games in the current gen, I have to say, this was a breath of fresh air! The Quarry is an awesome game! Highly recommended. Cons: I've paid $70 for the Series X version, but for ~10 hours of entertainment and the replayability, it was worth it!
TLDR: Series X is the best version... as per usual PS5 is second and Series S the third, sure it has cutbacks, but this is a 300 usd machine and the game still runs very well at 30fps (as well as Series X and PS5), though the Series X has a small advantage over PS5 in the fps department (it's just a bit more stable) Great video guys

Honestly, a few frame drops on the Series S and a Dynamic 1440p that still runs on a average of 1260p is pretty good, and he's all dispointed about 3-4fps drops in some early cutscenes, for me, that's a win considering the target hardware, and last gen these kind of games would run at 20fps constant.
The PC version is pretty lackluster on the technical side. No HDR, no Ultrawide support, massive stutters (especially on camera cuts), no option to turn off blur (it looks awful during daylight scenes)... Also minor but there is no ray tracing nor no dlss. All these things are very straight forward to implement in Unreal Engine and their other recent games did implement them completely, so my guess is that this was mostly handled by a new team internally.

Well clearly last gen can’t achieve the same graphical prowess so no ray tracing or god rays much worse Shadows way worse skin textures last gen has been pushed to the max

Should definitely only be PS4, PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. I find base Xbox versions look like trash
i'm impressed by how closely the dialogue is synced to the lip movements on the face models. prob the best lip-syncing i've seen honestly.
If I have to guess I'd say that the One X version runs at a higher resolution while the Series S has better lighting
and more in the way of post processing. I'm sure the Series S loads much faster too. But, in a lot of cases I would take the higher resolution (especially when dipping below 1080p)
over fancier lighting and higher ambient occlusion.
I'd argue there will be a significant difference visually. Due to it running at 30fps.
Ps5 can play this at 8k
Game is currently $20 new right now on PS5 and XSX.

I'm so disappointed as the Series S was supposed to only run lower in resolution but not to have a dramatic decrease in graphics :(
That's kind of contradicting yourself, the only real thing we saw the series s not compete in was the resolution off of the god rays.
Smh
I don’t really call them “cutbacks” on the series s. It’s more just the series s running at settings equivalent to the hardware.
Yeah, I played it on the S and other than the low res god rays the game looks stunning.

The biggest contribution to the uncanny valley effect i think is the fact that they have no inner mouth movement, giving them sort of a muppet vibe; You can definitely see it when the characters have bigger mouths, or yell. Yea the Rtx 3060ti can technically use higher settings but that’s when it runs only 24fps average so yea In order for it to sustain the same level of 30fps performance it’s gotta use Console equivalent settings and so it seems as though the New Machine’s are holding their own against mid range Pc gaming builds at just a fraction of the cost and that’s why Consoles have existed as long as they have because of their value compared to Pc as ya simply can’t match their price to performance ratio especially now days with the price of Pc hardware
ok
This is definitely one of the comments of all time
The way a console generates money is different from a PC which explains a lot of the pricing differences

The horrible motion blur and locked 30fps on PS5/XSX is ridiculous.
Shadows weren't even casting onto the characters also on console in certain scenes.
it really depends on the implementation of it if you are outside and there's a light source yes shadows should look defused but if you are in a well lit room that's somewhat small the shadows should be more defined and sharper remember it all depends on specific locations

That is just a demo version. You can play the start but then you'd need to pay for the full game.

You're right about the Emma character. I noticed it too. It's as if her mo cap mouth is too big and making the mouth movements too over the top for the character model or something. Which is weird because the other characters are fine for the most part.
Wish they would include PC in these Xbox and PS5 comparisons. Maybe there's a good reason why they don't

Man of Medan has a 60fps mode that you can access using a bug on PS5/XBSX

Now - save that game and start a fresh new game
Save a new save file for this game.
The framerate will be unlocked as long as you’re in the game, if you reboot you’ll need to load the old save, pick up the note again (which will unlock the framerate), go back to menu and load up your normal save game.
Boom, 60fps.
They released an official 60fps next gen upgrade a few weeks ago...
big disappointment that this game does not have 60fps mode on any console...
This game was pretty damn good.. I still appreciate until dawn though
They switched engines a lot, going from Decima for Until Dawn and now Unreal Engine, don’t forget they have Multiplatform focus too, so the polish isn’t the same as first party games.

i dont know why you would buy this? its a 70 dollar movie basically. bet i got the same experience by just watching someone on here play it
be careful my friend before entering this hostile environment
Why because a couple of God rays? Really? We really came to that point in gaming where you going to return a copy of something that's 4k, because a couple of God rays? Oh my gosh
@@kill3rbyysight very well said and good point ... I have both I Main the series x . But that's my preference plus I play on a 1440p 120 monitor .. it's way better than 4k 60 .. Sony needs to drop 1440 120 as well .
It looks great on the PS5.
The game looks beautiful, but what version of UE is this? 4? 5?
UE4.
As Time goes by we finally see this little extra power advantage for series X 😁
lol
Yeah I've noticed that too. PS5 was better in most 2021 games. Xbox is better in most 2022. Probably just developers getting accustomed to the new xbox devkits or Microsoft ironing out issues with them. Or both.
Well yeah it's 20% more powerful and has full rnda 2. Sony needs to drop 1440p .. cause 1440p at 120 is a good sweet spot it's what I run on my x .
@@kill3rbyysight tell me i am wrong ? That's what we see like in 90% of New release games this year... WE wont much more differences between thoses consoles..but there it is this little really little extra power.
@@jrpeegy8294 that little you don't know anything about pc/consoles or tech by your comment
Is there Unreal Engine's Shader Compilation Stuttering on PC?
Playing this on PS4 pro, I've never experienced so much bad texture and graphic pop-ins before. Just a terrible experience technically, very distracting throughout the entire game and combined with other weird glitches kinda ruined the experience. A good game otherwise but it never should have shipped in such a poor state.
Might be time to move to current gen consoles.
@Tristan I had ps5, Series X and S in 2020. We are half way through 2022.
@@jimmelton5846 wow good job you wasted a bunch of money to buy all the systems, not everyone can just go out and buy a console or justify it
@@jimmelton5846 Meh, the games looks good (i don't see any bug on this Game) and the games are gonna coming for the last gen minimum until 2024, so...
@@The_MEMEphis it's only money.
Thanks for the good work
One question? When im playin it on a series s on a 1440p monitor, its less playable than on a ps5 or series x? No one would miss the higher resolution!
You're fine. Series s and a 1440p monitor is a good combo. Outside of these direct comparisons you wouldn't even know the difference
It's not just a resolution difference
On my series x I keep it set at 1440p 120 .. I never use 4k 60
@@rogers8555 why would you do that on a game that only runs at 30fps max?
@@rogers8555 alot of games don't have 120 fps modes, also most games don't run at 4k60 or 1440p120 more like 1080p120 and 4k30, with dynamic resolution
The water is some of the most horrible looking water I have ever seen…
Gotta say, the lack of a 60 fps mode is disappointing. I know it's not a fast paced and has a "cinematic" vibe, but Until Dawn on PS5 at 60 fps felt awesome and some PC videos I've seen of The Quarry at 60 fps make the game look even better.
I'm with you. I just learned this so it is definitely a pass for me at this price point. Dark Horror pictures games are up to 60fps on Series X, at least Man of Medan is, maybe not locked but with VRR I couldn't tell the difference... definitely see it here. I don't much care for "it's a cinematic game excuses" lol there is NO game that looks better at 30fps than 60.
So maybe I'm thinking 60fps=$60 and 30fps=$30 then in this case 😂
Anyone take a look at the Silent Hill 2 cutscenes on PS2 that were pointed out in a DF Retro video were at 60fps vs the 30fps cutscenes in other systems and tell me it doesn't feel much better.
@@sanda386 Yes, PS2 games with 60 fps cutscenes also felt better back then. Even if the Quarry is meant to be more cinematic the simple fact that you have to react with Quick Time Events makes 60 fps a better gameplay experience, sometimes at 30 fps you are not even sure if you pressed the button in time because there's a little more input lag.
@@Aristowi And in this case, considering the resolution is still around 1800p at lowest, I don't think it'd be so hard to have a 1440p dynamic res mode down to 1080p to keep close to 60fps, especially on a letterboxed format like this.
@Dave Davies Agree to disagree, and more options is never a bad thing. You could have your 24 or 30fps @4k and a lower res mode 60fps mode wouldn't hurt anyone and many players would enjoy it more
@Dave Davies Low framerate is awful for moving, exploring and quick time events, also panning the camera is really annoying.
Not a fan of this kind of interactive movies but this one looks graphically quite appealing.
Damn ps5 has an inferior side on this game. Thought at least framerate will be 60. Deep deep sale
You clearly didn't watch the video PS5 is clearly 30 FPS
@@AzaiaMonota you clearly didnt understant my comment. I was hoping it was 60 fps.i know its 30. But we are paying more for the ps5 version and we still get 30 fps. There is no free upgrade from ps4.
@@TheIntunecatu Sorry my bad I didn't see the 2nd T in thought
I own a PS4 and not any of the three consoles of the versions reviewed here.
Can you guess why I'm disappointed?
Need to move to this gen
DF mostly only covers the next/current gen versions
Basically, SX>PS5>SS as usual!
Will be waiting for "Devil You Know" review! Every major release of such quirky engine as UE should be check for new glitches :)
What "Devil You Know"?
@@АндрейГорбунов-ш7э a new Supermassive Games release this autumn. There are mention in the video, as I remember.
Great review! Any chance we'll get a PC analysis? Thanks!
I would reckon probably not. They do touch upon it briefly in this vid though. No real stark difference between them graphically except for shadows. PC version runs unlocked and has a stutter issue with the 2k launcher that is easily fixed. Probably not something to waste a video on.
Nope.
Do I need ps plus in order to play this? I don't play online ..
